German Pioneers on the American Frontier: The Wagners in Texas and Illinois
Published in Hardcover by University of North Texas Press (2001)
Amazon base price: $32.95
Average review score:
fascinating story
The title is not half as catching as the book itself. The well known historian Terry G. Jordan (author of German Seed in Texas Soil) wrote about this book: "In this unique biographical case study of 19th-century German migration to the United States, Andreas Reichstein deals with one family's life on both sides of the Atlantic, allowing the reader to understand the 'push' factors that drove the Wagners to emigrate, and the 'pull' factors drawing them to the United States, as well as the cultural changes required for adaptation to America." The book is truly fascinating to read (with exeption of the introduction). Its full of details which bring the past to life -- the situation in Germany in the 19th century as well as the hardships on the frontier. Yet, there's even more to this book. Its not just a vividly told story of immigrant families on the Texas and Illinois frontier but, it also describes what made immigrants become Americans. Its a compelling study about identity, about the past and the - possible -- future of the United States. Rarely have I read a book that intrigued me as much as this one.

Twilight of the Gods
This is an immense work of Herculean intensity. At its worst this opera can be a little thick but even the worst music here is beautiful! The scoring is superb, the harmonies rich. This is the only part of The Ring to use a chorus. The first moments of the piece set the tone of apocalyptic drama.
It's a big work but once you get involved in the action (this takes a few seconds at most), the time flies by and before you know it, it is over. It is a great idea to equip oneself with the score for most productions as, unfortunately, there are very few good productions of this ever. It is a complicated score, exhausting and difficult to sing and interpret. A pity, for when Gotterdammerung is done right there are few things as powerful and beautiful in the world.
Gravity: Stories

Gravity
Gravity, Erica Wagner's first collection of stories, is hopefully not her last. It is a beautiful, spellbinding work, reminiscent of Jeanette Winterson, Annie Proulx, and Anne Michaels among others, and as good as any of the aforementioned.

The best graphic prose ever written!
This book is a visual and literary masterpiece. Matt Wagner took a novel approach to the comic book format and created the poetic dark story of Hunter Rose aka Grendel, the most sadistic and romantic killer in comic book history. It chronicles the birth and death of Grendel in a smoothly flowing pictorial, with text inserts. This book is a must read if you are a fan of the dark and twisted. This is not a children's book by any means

Good Book for Horse Lovers
Back when i was in grade 7 i had the pleasure of reading this book and others in the series. They are all very good and i'm sad to see them all out of print. Kinda sad how all the books i read while growing up are no longer available. I urge anyone who has a chance to read these books to give them a chance. Along with other by Sharon Wagner.

JD & Knuckle
...This 1903-1941 color-history narrative, is the equal collabration of H.Wagners' writing and Mark Mitchells' photography. (My favorites being the close-up pewter-looking detail of those JD,Twin Cam, and 8-valve exo-skeleton motors.) Have you ever seen a JD at idle? Cripes...the beast just chuffs. With those exposed external (exhaust) push rods moving up and down...the machine's an animal. If for nothing else, buy this book for the (drum-scanned) photographs. © Kirk Perry, 2002
