An important, moving book that instructs and comforts.
An important, fearlessly honest, moving book. Each page instructs, comforts and, possibly, breaks your heart, as those for whom it was written too late come to mind. The message couldn't be simpler; yet the cultural refusal to hear it is both complex and insidious. Mr. Sharp has cut through it like a hot knife through butter, presenting us with an unexpected fork in the road and loving direction to the path of healing and calm. If you know someone who is dying, or plan on it yourself someday, read this book, own this book

Mentoring for Resiliency: Setting Up Programs for Moving Youth from "Stressed to Success"

A Powerful Start for Mentoring Youth
No other book provides the passion and power for establishing mentoring connections for youth as this book. While not exactly a how-to-do-it book, it provides enough details about the "why" of mentoring and disinguishes clearly between mentoring that has value for youth versus other types of well-meaning approaches. Chapters are included by the most well-known leaders in the youth mentoring field, including Marc Freedman and Bonnie Benard, that are not only informative and inspiring, but can can easily yield guidance for anyone associated with mentoring youth. All the authors agree that the power of mentoring is not in the "program," but in the relationship.

the illustrations!!!!
The illustrations are what really make all of the Miss Bianca books. Yes, the writing is charming, and the characters are endearing, but without the illustrations (by Garth Williams), these books would only be so much children's literature. With the ink drawings, they're Children's Literature WITH REALLY CUTE PICTURES. (um, ok, let me try again...)

These are children's books without, perhaps, deep plots, but they will certainly be remembered by children for the pictures and characters, and by the parents for the charming, unexpected turns of phrase. I read one of these books when I was a child, and one a few weeks ago. I must say I enjoyed them both times. If you or your child like mouse adventure stories, I urge you to give these a try. I'd say the reading level is ten or twelve. Younger children probably would like them read aloud.

As the reviewer on the back of one of these books says, "the plot is pure marshmallow fluff... but the characters! Charming."

(Something like that.)

I believe this series was the inspiration for "The Rescuers" movie, but I think the books are much better.

The Morris Book: With a Description of Dances As Performed by the Morrismen of England
Published in Hardcover by Charles River Books (1978)
Author: Cecil James Sharp
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:

The Bible of Morris Dancing
This is *the* seminal work in the obscure, but highly entertaining art of Morris dancing. All other authors writing aboiut Morris dancing include this work in their bibliography. There have, of course, been differences of opinion about the veracity of his descriptions of the dances. One's memory can only hold so much, but he was basically the first person to formalize the dances and traditions on paper and much of the modern revival of the dance traditions can be credited to his work in preserving it.

The Moss Flora of Mexico (Memoirs of the New York Botanical Garden, Vol 69)

A Bryologist's Delight
It is with envy that we European botanists see the publication of bryological books in the United States. The two volumes about the moss flora of Mexico are a superb example of how well written bryological books can be. The Flora is beautifully illustrated, the keys work and the descriptions are excellent. Everybody only remotely interested in this group of plants will gladly welcome it as an addition to their collection.

Good overview of environmental careers, I recommend it!
As Director of Environmental Studies I regularly recommend this book to students who come to see me about environment-related career possibilities.

The book is divided into 4 parts:

1) Job hunting in the environmental field. In this section readers are given hints about education, using volunteer and internship opportunities, and ways to break into the environmental job market.

2) Planners and communicators. In this section readers are provided info about jobs related to these two areas, including environmental education.

3) Environmental protection. In this section information about industries such as solid waste management, hazardous waste mgt, air quality mgt, and water quality mgt are outlined. There are opportunties in both private and public sectors for people trained in these areas.

4) Natural resource management. This section describes the kinds of jobs most people tend to think of for someone trained in the environmental sciences: land and water conservation; fisheries; wildlife mgt; park maintenance and mgt; outdoor recreation; and forestry.

All in all, this book provides a nice introduction to environmental careers. I know that students of mine have used this book to look for job directions, and to show their parents that choosing a major in environmental studies can lead to a wide range of viable career options.

Probably the best overview book on the market.

5 stars.

Better than read it, only helping Dr. Ashcraft in a surgery
I am a Pediatric Surgery, and a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at ULBRA ( Brasilian Luteran University)- at Porto Alegre, Brazil. This book will be the #1, as Recommended Bibliography for all Medical students, because it is clear, didactic, and have a lot of good figures. My only dream is to buy it at a better price, exclusive for Third World Nations.
