A very comprehensive, current guide to biodegradation
I have not read this book yet, however, the chapter on biodegradation of inorganic nitrogen compounds is of most interest to me. I would like Mr. J.A. Cole or Mr. Colin Ratledge to contact me, through the above e mail, to see if I can get a copy of this chapter only.

Great Aussie tale!!
Twelve year old Bill Pascoe lives in the South Australian harbour town of Port Lincoln. Treated like a loser by nearly everyone and given the nickname 'Snook' because of his gangly features, he is friends with three other boys who are also considered "down and out". One of them dies in a fishing tragedy at sea and the future looks bleak for the rest of them. When a waterspout nearly destroys his father's fishing boat, Snook must get both he and his father back to port. Three crewmen are lost in the tragedy. Snook 'becomes a man' in the eyes of family and at the conclusion one can tell he is really going to get somewhere in life. Hopefully his two mates will follow suit... The film from this book was released in the late 1970's, with a slightly different ending.

Boiler Water Treatment, Principles and Practice

Best Boiler Water Treatment book available
This two-volume text is an excellent resource on the subject of boiler water treatment. Volume I covers boiler basics and steam water chemistry, whereas Volume II encompasses program design, and management. As with the author's previous publication on cooling water (Cooling Water Treatment, Principles and Practices), this book-set incorporates both theory and practical information on boiler water treatments. This two-volume set text is highly recommended for use by both the non-specialist needing fundamental information for managing boiler water systems, and for seasoned professionals. It is written for use by professionals worldwide and is not specific to the US market.

Normally, reviewing the fourteen chapters in the two volumes, eight from Volume I, and six from Volume II, would seem to be masochistic, but the information presented was worth the effort. There is a table of symbols and abbreviations in the front of each volume. Each chapter is well written, easily to read and understand. I especially appreciated the use of bold wording to highlight important terminology or concepts. Volume I is written logically starting with Chapter 1 on "Steam Generation" through Chapter 8 "Waterside and Steamside Problems." One does not have to be versed in the contents of Volume I to understand and utilize the information in Volume II on boiler application chemistry. There is logic in the way the material is presented in both volumes. The basics of steam generation to waterside and steam side problems are discussed in Volume I. Frayne devotes four chapters on specific waterside and steamside problems: hotwater and low pressure boilers, pre-boiler, specific sections in the boiler, and post-boiler. The problems and resolutions are succinctly discussed in each of the four chapters. In Volume II there are detailed discussions on treatment chemistries for the various sections in the overall boiler system with suggested formulations that have successfully been applied.

The minor typographical errors that have no impact on the boiler water technology discussed in this treatise and does not detract from the wealth of information presented. The material is up-to-date.

This two-volume set should be in every professional's library that has any responsibility for boiler water systems.

Classical Treatment of a Classical Art
David Prescott's treatment of bonsai is highly recommended. The Bonsai Handbook is a fine example of how bonsai should be presented. It depicts both young trees and fine specimens. It makes bonsai approachable to the beginner as well as creates intrigue for the advanced collector. The plates are clear and finely photographed. Illustrations are well executed and helpful. The text is well written, although, at times, a bit complex. The author thoroughly descibes the art, science, and technique. He includes excellent information concerning tools, pots and general horticultural practices. As a bonsai artist and horticultural botanist, I find this book to be a great value and superior to many bonsai books presently in-print.

I question only minor elements: the use of cut-paste on pruning wounds. One photograph (p.104)is mislabeled (Larix larcina should be Thuja occidentalis).

The breaking process

A move from religion to Christianity.
The front cover of the book says it all. A stained glass window cut in half. The top half is a beautiful church type mosaic displaying a myriad of colours and evoking that 'churchy' feeling. The bottom half is in black and white. It shows a photo of a poor person scavenging for food. The front cover is obviously stating that many of the churches have got it all wrong. We must move away from polite, arty, religosity and start facing more brutal realities. What the front cover says in pictures, the book says in words. Moving and challenging.

Dense but wonderful book
This book had to be one of the best books I have ever read. The journey that Vandenbroeck takes the reader on, is a unique one and will definitely result in a "breakthrough". Started reading his other book "Al-Kemi", and I must say I should have been reading them at the same time. A lot of things from Breaking Through become clearer in conjunction with the other book. Enjoy the journey!

Excellent Modern Treatment of an Ancient Subject
This superb, broad collection of detailed papers on ancient Eastern Central Asia is fascinating for anyone interested in the subject. Though presented for professionals in the field, virtually every paper is intelligible to the lay person, opening new horizons for anyone interested in the history of this region. Exceptionally well-edited, with chapters covering archeology, migration and nomadism, linguistics, genetics and physical anthropology, metallurgy, textiles, geography and climatology, history, mythology and ethnology, a long overdue comprehensive treatment of this subject is finally at hand. Every contributor to the two-volume set should be pleased with this phenomenal achievement. Persons interested in many diverse topics, such as Zoroastrian studies, history of the Fergana Valley, or Tocharian linguistics, will still find many papers of interest, whether treated as separate subjects or not. Outstanding!

Impressive with good BC History!
I found the book to be well written. The history of BC and furthermore Nanaimo and Canada's false prophet "Brother XII" really opened my eyes. As a person who has lived in Nanaimo for all of my 17 years I had never heard of Brother XII before. The information in this book and references to Nanaimo and the surrounding area was wonderful. To think such a spiritual scam occurred right on Nanaimo's back door was amazing! My hat real goes off to Mr. Oliphant who researched many of the people who lived in town, in Vancouver, and in many other places affected by the Brother. I will definitely read it again, and I recommend anyone interested in BC or Vancouver Island history also read this book as it is an invaluable chapter to our past!
