For the true to heart and those new to great music!
Coming from an age group that barely remembers the days of Sun Studio's most talented performers and songwriters, this book drives home the importance and impact of the many talents that emerged from this Memphis-based shrine.

This is a must read for anone who loves rock-n-roll, blues, jazz, or just wants to learn more about the hardships, the triumphs and the many lessons learned in the music industry.

Many top idols are present, but what makes the book such a worthwhile reading are the writings on those less known. My hats off to a true tribute for the sounds and artists of the south!

The definitive history of the definitive indie label.
Have you heard the news? Good Rockin' Tonight is the encyclopedia for all fans of Sam C. Phillips' groundbreaking Memphis Recording Service and Sun/Phillips International labels. Colin Escott and Martin Hawkins, whose expert commentaries appear in the liner notes of many Sun CD reissue packages, deliver thorough accounts of the players and events in the Sun story. Full chapters are devoted to Sun's best-known players (Sam Phillips, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley) and the landmark events (the recording of Rocket 88, the arrival of Howlin' Wolf, and the birth of Rockabilly), but the real highlight is the attention to the lesser-known players like Joe Hill Louis, Scotty Moore, Sonny Burgess, Billy Riley, and Roland Janes. They didn't top the charts, but were as important to the creation of the "Sun Sound" as Perkins, Lewis, Cash and Presley were to its export outside the Memphis city limits, and in Good Rockin' Tonight they receive the recognition they deserve. Escott and Hawkins round out the Sun story with a complete discography of all the Sun and Phillips International singles, EPs and LPs released while both labels were active.

Sun was the first powerhouse independent record label of Rock & Roll music. It's catalogue, performed by rough-edged musicians who turned out consistently innovative material and a Top Ten hit here and there, has been exhaustively reissued over the past ten years, much to the delight of Sun connoisseurs. Sadly, the same can't be said of material written about Sun: most of the books (several also written by Escott and Hawkins) are now out of print. Good Rockin' Tonight stands alone as the most comprehensive work dedicated to Sam Phillips and the record label whose influence on popular culture deserves much more.

A Cold War thriller that still piles on the suspense!
In 1944, three British Army Commandos commit a brutal murder in Cairo. Forty-three years later, the crime is still unsolved, save for one detective's obsession with the case. Then in Greece, British MI6 agent Harry Masterson is pushed off a cliff and dies. When the commandos learn of this, they are in a state of terror. The Greek underground communist movement has united with Russian anti-Glasnost followers and use the commandos as a British contact, much to their fear. What is their motive? Russian President Gorbachev is due to meet with Western heads of state in the UK, and it seems that an assassination attempt is threatened. Who can stop the conspiracy? Why, enter Britain's best secret agents Tweed, Paula Grey and Bob Newman. Tweed and Paula travel to the county of Somerset in England to investigate the commandos and some grisly murders on isolated hills linked to the wife of one. Newman and the UK's best marksman Marler travel to the Greek island of Siros and also Athens to investigate a secret communist underground hideaway and how it is linked to MAsterson's murder and Gorbachev's potential downfall. The story may seem dated now, but the action and intrigue never stop until an explosive climax in the UK. The locations are well described and created. Siros is fictional, but it brought back memories of our vacaction in Corfu, another real Greek island which Siros is based on in part. And of course, Tweed and Paula get to eat and drink in the best pubs and restaurants! Hugely entertaining.

Thrilling Murder Mystery
The Greek Key is one of the BEST books I have ever read. It is not just a murder mystery, it is a MURDERS mystery; more than one murder occurs. The way Colin Forbes sets up the story is fabulous! The detectives Robert Newman, Marler, Paula Grey, Tweed, Pete Neild, and Robert Butler are out to solve two murders that took place 40 years ago (with respect to the year 1987, I think). They end up having to find the murderer of two people who were killed during their investigation. If I say anymore I may give too much away, but please read the book!! I highly reccommend this book, I have read it five times. It is gripping, page-turning, chiller. Anyone in the mood for an EXCELLENT mystery, should definetely read it.

Another great one from James
The third in the Harpur and Iles series. Full of humor, grit, gripping dialogue, sex, drugs - what more could one want in a story? Harpur takes more than his share of tough breaks in this one, and Iles really starts to blossom as a character as well. The series keeps getting better and better.

Bill James is a breath of fresh air.
I have read several of Bill James' police procedurals and this is one of the best. The characters are highly original, the dialogue sparkles, and the descriptions are often poetic. (Example: "His brain shone like potato peelings.") The settings can be dark and sinister, but there is plenty of black humor in both this entry and in the series. James creates a morally ambiguous but fascinating world in 1980s/1990s Britain. I intend to buy every one of James's Harper & Iles mysteries.

A classic statement about divine healing
I couldn't begin to count the times I've been grateful for this book, based on Urquhart's thirty-year experience in the healing ministry. It's far more than what it claims to be--not merely a clear and comprehensive presentation of its subject, but a treasury of Good News in general. Urquhart writes: "God's healing purposes for you are complete. He wants you to be spiritually healthy, emotionally healthy, physically healthy; He wants you to have healthy relationships, healthy attitudes, a healthy environment. He wants healthy nations and a healthy society." The message is presented with gentle authority on every page. It's exactly what distressed Christians, and a suffering world in general, need to hear.

The most powerful book I ever read!
This book is so uplifting! I was going through a personal crisis and my doctor recommended this book. What a difference it has made in my life in such a short time. It certainly reinforced my faith in God. Whether you're going through a crisis or not I highly recommend this book.

How to Survive the E-Business Downturn

honest and open guide
This is a very exciting and pleasurable book. In the honest and open way the author shows "How to Survive the E-Business Downturn". The author shows that there is no downturn per se but there are companies who managed to attract investments but fail to creating wealth and value to the customers. Such companies inevitably collaps (with boo.com as an example). The author gives a lot of remarkable case studies throughout the book to illustrate his view.

The author shows that in order to survive, the company should have the right strategy and keep careful eyes on it, the concrete mission, the clear vision of the perspectives, the definitive goals and the business plan. The author shows five stages of growth of a company (with IBM as an example) and tells how to survive the transitions. Most of the companies fail to survive the first transition.

With various examples, the author shows that nothing kills the business as fast as the attempts to do many distinct things simultaneously, and emphasizes the importance of aligning the vision of the key players of the business. Those members of your organisation should be in charge of writing the business plan who take accountability of the outcomes of the plan that they have written.

The author also empasizes on the teamwork and the employee motivation as the imperatives of a success of any business.

I would also recommend "What Management Is" by Joan Magretta and "Leading the Revolution" by Gary Hamel in addition to this book.

An Excellent Guide!!
How to Survive the E-Business Downturn is a must for all those internet entrepreneurs, myself included, who are running, or planning to start-up an e-business at a time when online ventures are facing violent changes and where failure is more common than success. The book showedd me how to use proven management tools and concepts, adapted in ways that suit my e-businesses in order to keep it thriving in such a fluctuating marketplace. The intro to the book explains in depth just what is currently happening in the world of e-business and gives enough background for readers to understand the essence of the subject. Set out in parts, with each part having five or six separate chapters, making it easier to follow without having to tackle large chunks of text! There is also an excellent list of references to enable readers to take on further readings on anything discussed. The author draws on a host of real-life, uptodate cases and supports his advice with numerous action plans and checklists. This book advises in a stepbystep format, the potential (or existing) e-businessperson what to do to develop a successful e-business, but also warns of what not to do! It is interesting to read about what companies, or even individual people, have done that has made them either successful or unsuccessful in the Internet World of business.

Interesting and highly informative
This book is very unique in its approach to industrial electronics and control systems. I particularly liked the chapters on programmable controllers and robotics. It is very well written and it is obvious that the author knows a lot about the subject. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has an interest in industrial electronics and its applications.

The most unique industrial electronics book on the market
A fascinating study of industrial electronics incorporating hundreds of practical applications and written in a very straightforward, easy-to-understand style. The author has done a great job of describing the various types of industrial electronic equipment used in the workplace and has gone to great lengths to explain some of the most important aspects.

I found this book to be extremely useful and highly recommend it to anyone.

Iona (Colin Baxter Island Guides)
Published in Hardcover by Voyageur Press (1997)
Authors: E. Mairi MacArthur and Colin Baxter
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $120.40
Average review score:

Excellent text and marvellous photography - a real treat!
This is one of the few books that does justice to Iona, an island that has enchanted and captivated visitors for, literally, thousands of years. It is truly difficult to convey the elusive magic of Iona, that combination of physical place and atmosphere which draws so many of us back, time after time. Colin Baxter needs no introduction to those familiar with landscape photography in Scotland, and his work here is up to his usual breath-taking standard. Mairi MacArthur has a solid grounding in the history of the island, and of Argyll and the Highlands, as well as a sympathetic but honest perspective on islanders, past and present. As a guide during your visit to Iona, the book is first-rate. The maps and diagrams are simple but clear and full. The explanations and descriptions help you understand what you see around you, in terms of geology, ecology, human settlements, animal and human life - and including of course the ancient religious centre. It is readable and useful for those less familiar with Scotland and its life and traditions as well as for those of us who live here For those who have visited Iona, it is a lovely reminder. For those who have not yet had that privilege, this is a taster which should have you itching to come.

A fine guide to one of Scotland's richest historical sites.
This book is the latest of Mairi MacArthur's books on her family's native island. It is rich in accurate, well-researched detail, supported by her extensive knowledge of Iona. This has been gained through academic research and through her close acquaintance with the island's residents over many years. Colin Baxter's photographs give an excellent impression of Iona, though generally when on its best behaviour in the summer - it can be a wild place at other times! The island is of interest to tourists, academics and also Christian people wishing to explore this small and incredibly beautiful island, and to see for themselves the place where some of those rugged Celtic saints brought their faith from Ireland to Scotland in the sixth century. The pictures and story of the Abbey show how it remains very much a living home of the Christian faith. It will surely also appeal to the generations of Iona emigrants who have settled in the USA and Canada.

Finally a great book about Gaultier!
Although it took 25 years after Gaultier first started designing under his own name for someone to dedicate a book to him, it was well worth the wait. McDowell, as with his book on Galliano, does a lavish job on Gaultier's life and designs. The book is packed with runway photos and details about some of the collections. My only complaints about the book (and they are very minor complaints): McDowell goes into over-detail about Gaultier's life, especially up to 1976 when he first started designing his own label, making for slow reading for half of the book; a few of the photos are mislabelled with the wrong collection (mostly the couture photos); and although there are some great runway photos in the book, a lot of Gaultier's show-stopping designs in the past are not represented, and there aren't enough photos from men's collections. A great book though!

Gaultier fans--this is the book you've been waiting for!
Colin McDowell's peek into the wild world of Jean Paul Gaultier is both long overdue and well worth the wait! From his earliest childhood memories to his 2000 couture show and all points inbetween, McDowell reveals all in the same manner Gaultier designs his collections--with wit, irreverence, and style! This lavishly illustrated book has pictures and sketches (sadly, not Gaultier's own) from his most famous collections, including some rare and unusual ones. Photo coverage starts in heavily from around the 1989 collections, but earlier eighties collections are glimpsed here and there throughout the book. McDowell punctuates with notable quotes and images of Gaultier's influences, from pin-up queens to Physique Pictorial, from the great couturiers to street fashion. Smartly written and solidly designed (it even has Gaultier's nautical stripes in the end caps!) this book is a MUST for all Gaultier fans and admirers. It explains, in vivid detail, how he became the fashion icon that he is today!

also i learned(costed me MUCH to 'traduce') all the geordie style & jargon(i think is geordie style, no?)to live where i am now (top of england)one of my best-favourites(if not my best)

My Favorite Book When I Was A Youngster
I had forgotten all about this book until I saw it listed here. I dug through all my old stuff in the basement, finally found it, and sat down, right there on the cold concrete floor of the basement, and read, right through. This book brought back a lot of memories. This was my favorite book when I was a youngster. Its still a fun read. Get it for yourself or your kids and you'll have fun time.

Killer Fiction
Published in Paperback by Feral House (1997)
Authors: G. J. Schaefer, Sondra London, and Colin Wilson
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A serial killer recalls his crimes??
Gerard Schaefer hated women. No two ways about it. He was a serial killer housed in Florida State Prison (until being murdered by a fellow criminal some years back)with plenty of time on his hands and plenty of ink in his hate-filled pen. The stories in this book aren't for those easily offended. He revels in tales of death, torture, necrophilia and unrelenting sadism. These stories are unlike anything you'll find anywhere else on the market especailly considering that Schaefer was convicted of crimes along the lines of those he writes about. So, despite his claims to the contrary, the reader is left wondering whether he was speaking from experience or merely making it all up. Somehow I doubt the latter is the case. Highly recommended.

LE livre écrit par un tueur en série
J'ai lu la version française de ce livre et je dois dire quand le lisant on entre tous simplement dans la tête d'un tueur en série. Fantastique!
