Excellent Educationl Text
I'm a teacher and I find the Eyewitness books highly educational. I like the way the concepts are presented in a form without backgrounds. This gives clear facts to the reader without over taxing the attention span. The books are highly informative, presenting difficult concepts in comprehendable chunks that stimulate interest. I have almost the whole collection for my own children and they LOVE them!

this will interest children in insects
This would be a great book for use in elementary school science classes. It has a wonderful layout, with many beautiful photographs (if insects can be called beautiful). The text, mixed nicely with the pictures, covers basic information on insects as well as various interesting facts.

Great for toddlers/preschool
My 3 year old son loves these books, and they have really helped get him excited about animals and nature. Now when we go for walks he can name every bug, bird, snake etc. that we see and tell me a little about them.

A very intresting book with every type of reptile.
This is a very good book and is my second favorite Eyewitness book coming after Eyewitness SHARK. beautiful
This is a beautiful book. The photography is gorgeous, and I highly recommend this book a a bookshelf staple.

One of the best fashion writers. Another Must-Have!
I have always loved the writings of Colin McDowell: from "The Designer Scam" to "Man of Fashion" and "Galliano." His latest, "Fashion Today," is truly the crowning achievement. Each chapter can be read as an individual essay. The writing has the same combination of criticism and appreciation--and true understanding of fashion--that is characteristic of McDowell. And the photographs--some are rare even for a fashion devotee such as myself (I thought I'd seen most, if not all). This is another beautifully designed book by Phaidon--an instant collectible!

Amazon base price: $3.99
Average review score:

"Follow the Leader" good for adolescents and adults
We need more of Vicki Winslow's books on youth (and adult!) issues in 21st Century settings! I like the way Winslow uses words and that she chooses important issues. Her characters, with all of their strengths and weaknesses and the issues with which they are confronted, are pertinent today.

Follow The Leader
A compelling story of how one girl can make such a difference in the world. When her bestfriend Jackie is acting predujuist towards black people it is time for Amanda to take a difference. In the end, everything works out great for Amanda and has many friends including ones who are black. A great Historical Fiction book for children of all ages. Teaches kids how life really was back then.

Perfect
I gave this to my boyfriend (hint, hint) and it has excellent advice. I know he's going to propose and do everything right now that he's read this book. It helps that it's written by a guy, too. I think groomsmen will be more receptive to the advice.

Every bride must buy this for her fiance!
This is everything you wished your fiance already knew about weddings! Do yourself and your fiance a favor and get him this book. In Colin's special way, he shares with grooms the things brides may not even know about manners and etiquette and style. If your fiance follows even one of Colin's suggestions - you will be elated!

Foundations of bilingual education and bilingualism
Published in Unknown Binding by Multilingual Matters ()
Author: Colin Baker
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A must-read for serious Bilingual Educators
This title has become both a text book and a classic. The author lists all the major theories of second language acquisition with clarity, providing a broad range of approaches to bilingualism.

Excellent Survey of Bilingualism & Bilingual Education
Baker's book, first edition onward, has been the main text for a number of years in a required introductory course for future bilingual teachers at the university in which I teach. The book has many strengths; it reads well, it has a world perspective on bilingualism, it describes a number of linguistic theories relative to bilingualism, and it provides a clear and thorough foundation for understanding how language policies are designed, and what they are based on. It is important to note that even individuals who have not taken linguistic courses can understand the text because it does a great job of explaining terminology and theories so that the reader can then concentrate on the issues surrounding bilingual education and bilingualism. The text is effective as an introduction to bilingualism because it explores not only linguistic theories, but also looks at sociological and psychological theories that can deepen the understanding of the language dynamics of bilingualism. The premise of the book is that a language is a resource to be nurtured and developed, whether it is a "minority" language or not; this is the opposite of seeing a minority language as a societal, political, or educational problem, a viewpoint that has become increasingly voiced by state-level politicians (with no background in linguistics or teaching) who blame bilingualism for low academic achievement among immigrant youth and have reshaped language policies through state referenda. Baker provides a stark contrast between such perspectives and those in numerous countries in Europe and Asia, where multilingualism is the norm. In summary, Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism is an excellent resource for those interested in this topic.

Freedom or death : Australia's greatest escape stories from two world wars
Published in Unknown Binding by Allen & Unwin ()
Author: Colin Burgess
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Suspense, adventure and courage.
Freedom or Death is a collection of stories about the most dangerous aspect of the Australia prisoner of war experience - escape. Here is all the adventure, suspense and courage of ordinary Australians who defied their captors; men willing to risk death in order to overcome almost impossible odds in the loneliest war of all - the fight for the right to be free. In Freedom or Death we meet Australian POWs from all walks of life and all theatres of war: one who fled a German work camp during the Great War; another who escaped from the legendary Colditz Castle and an airman who brazenly attempted to fly a German Messerschmitt back to England. We also re-live the tragic saga of the brutal Japanese death marches across North Borneo, from which six Australians escaped to become the only survivors from 2000 POWs on the march. We follow the incredible journeys to freedom from the Japanese-held islands of Ambon and Hainan by some resolute members of Gull Force. The author, Colin Burgess, is also the author of several children's books and adult non-fiction including The Diggers of Colditz (with Jack Champ), Prisoners of War and Barbed Wire and Bamboo (both with Hugh Clarke). These tales of valour, sacrifice and grim survival are Australia's great escape stories, true stories of suspense and the indomitable spirit of ordinary men determined to escape - or die.

A marvellous, moving book!
I cannot rate this book highly enough - thorough research and incredible stories make it impossible to put down until the last page.

Futures and Options Markets: An Introduction

A Student's Perspective
The word BORING is what usually comes to mind when I read textbooks for my classes. They are not something I look forward to because I typically drift off into never-never-land. Usually they're missing some dynamic, and as a result they just don't seem to capture my attention.

However, this textbook sparked a DIFFERENT reaction in me. First off, I found the futures and opinions market interesting and the material in the textbook easy to understand. It was teeming with examples and diagrams that enhanced my grasp on the fundamentals behind the market. Unlike other textbooks, I found that I ENJOYED the reading. In particular, I enjoyed the numerous real-world applications provided in the boxes throughout the chapters.

I believe the greatest asset in this book are these real-world applications like: how price movements in the orange juice markets market could forecast freezing temperatures better than the U.S. National Weather service, to the enormous role hedging plays for the airline industries. By intertwining stimulating examples into the required nitty-gritty, it held my attention. I thought reading this textbook was both educational and FUN. It sparked in me a new-found enthusiasm in futures and opinions.

Futures and Options Markets: An Introduction
An outstanding introduction to futures and options markets, clear, concise and bursting with examples and current issues and controversies. Unlike most futures and options textbooks this text focuses on all types of assets - commodity, financial, energy etc. The book's blend between theory and applications and examples is outstanding. The applications, which are an intergral part of each chapter makes this a must for students and established researchers who want to gain a full understanding of the current state of the futures and options industry.

The Gathering Storm

History at it's best--------well written and engaging
How does he know this stuff! The girl's stockings and shoe bukles?????????????

Winston Churchill would not have been irritated or bored
Why did they not give me History in this format at school?? !!
The historical research is impeccable - I checked.

An absorbing & informative history lesson comes with an enticing travelogue. Elegant, unhurried prose recalls another era and the layers of detail paint such a visual image that I felt I was viewing a movie. Then I read the author's background - so - of course ...

I did feel that Richard Blane was a French James Bond ... but... I will allow that for this much well researched, scholarly enjoyment.

Hey .... maybe Mel Gibson will play Blane ..? ..!!
