Dress in Anglo Saxon England
This is a wonderfully thorough, academic book. It breaks male and female dress into eras, and then examines clothing form, fabric, and accessories in a very scholarly manner. The author is not afraid to note when the record is unclear, and equally unafraid to give her own opinion. The index and bibiliography are extensive. At the same time, the book is very readable and well written, and easy for non-academics (such as myself) to follow. This book is _the_ source for Anglo Saxon costume recreationists.

Thorough Associations Resource
This book is available for refernece at libraries. It is a wonderful resource to obtain information about various associations in the world. (Most listings are located in the USA). It gives the name, address, phone, fax, email, staff, budget, publications, general description of purpose and tradeshows hosted for most listings.

The only downfall is there isn't a breakdown by region or state.

Good review for people out of school a long time.
I like the workbook idea with the answers. It is easy to read and would be easy to understand if I had bought the companion book, Essentials of English. I recommend both if you have been out of school for a long time. I have learned a lot from the workbook. Now I plan to buy the companion book and go back through the workbook.

From fibres to fabrics

...one of the most technically thorough books...
WASHING YOUR QUILT: Try the gentle cycle on your machine with cool water. Agitate for only a few minutes, then let it soak using Ivory dishwashing liquid for about 10 minutes. Spin out on a gentle cycle. Rinse with cool water. Swish quilt around to remove soap and drain and spin. If soapy residue remains, repeat the procedure. Then air dry. This is the recommendation from Harriet Hargrave in her book - From Fibre to Fabric. The Essential Guide to Quiltmaking Textiles. Hard cover, internally spiral bound, 144 pages with colour photos throughout. This is not just another quilting book. It is one of the most technically thorough books I have found as of late. She starts off with a historical review of cotton, goes on to describe factory methods of textile preparation, printing and surface finishing. There are also several chapters dedicated to batts and their inherent differences, discussing about 20 different types. For those interested in a technically thorough and correct investigation of fabric and batts from start to finish, this book is for you.

Harlan Ellison's "Jeffty Is Five": A Study Guide from Gale's "Short Stories for Students"
Published in Digital by The Gale Group (23 July, 2002)
Amazon base price: $3.95
Average review score:

A decent study guide for one of Ellison's classic stories
The genesis for "Jeffty Is Five" was when author Harlan Ellison misheard a conversation at a party. Whatever was really said, Ellison heard, "Jeffty is five. Jeffty is always five." Ellison immediately flashed upon a little boy who was caught at the age of five and never got any older. But, of course, Ellison adds so much more to this story, which is a fond remembrance of the things that made his childhood so great: radio shows, pulp magazines, and Saturday morning matinees. This is a wonderful story and I have to admit I am happily surprised to find out that it is being used enough in America's classrooms to warrant the Gale Group putting together this packet of literary criticism. There is plenty of material here (although I have to admit plot summaries of short stories always strikes me as rather odd) covering all of the basics: theme, style, character analysis, etc. There are also packets for Ellison's "A Boy and His Dog" and "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream," but not for "'Repent, Harlequin!' said the Ticktockman." Go figure. My own recommendations for other Ellison stories in a similar vein would be "Free With This Box!," "Final Shtick," and "One Life, Furnished in Early Poverty." All of these stories represent Ellison connecting to his childhood, but clearly "Jeffty Is Five" is the best of the bunch (one of Ellison's top 10 stories ever to be sure).

History in Dispute-- Worth Reading!
This book provides an interesting diversity of opinions on some of the most compelling Cold War issues. The pro-con chapter format works well for readers. The chapters are written mainly by professors and advanced graduate students but are not overly academic. This book is accessible to policymakers as well as lay historians. I strongly recommend this book.

House of Leaves

Author: Janice M. Gale
Amazon base price: $12.00
Average review score:

Let us always reflect..
Janice Gale gets around. She brings us to places in the heart and head and even around the globe. Loneliness and melancholy abide with good-natured cheer. Anger is there, and misery, and death, but also beauty and gentleness. She tells us, "Here is where we live."

Ms. Gale writes equably of car washes (how one gets a sense of place!) funeral bouquets, sacrificed virgins and child prostitution. Fellow souls who suffer the inevitable consequences of geography and politics are tenderly examined, and left to endure.

Intimate Attachments: Toward a New Self Psychology

a good introduction to contemporary self psychology
Intimate Attachments is a much needed book - one that clearly fills the space between developmental theory (a la Bowlby) and one of the major schools of thought in contemporary psychoanalytic theory (i.e., Kohutian self psychology). With a thorough discussion of theoretical dovetailing and each theory's assumptive underpinnings, the authors provide a rich yet accessible framework for understanding patients from a "new" (integrative) perspective. A reworking of the notions of transference and intimacy (within the therapeutic relationship) rounds out the theoretical picture, which is then fleshed out with numerous vignettes of work with children, adolescents, and adults. This book provides a good introduction to self psychology to those who are new to the field, yet offers something for the veteran as well.

Armistead Maupin is right - Patrick Gale is great!
Forgive me if I blather on about how much fun this book was to read. I didn't find it as humorous as I did amusing and engaging. Gale's characters get inside your head. I found that I didn't want the story to reach a conclusion - and it never really did! No neat resolution for these characters - life goes on. I just know that Hilary and Rufus and Henry are out there, somewhere, trying to make sense of their lives together. Great, good fun. Patrick Gale rules!
