The British New Left
Published in Hardcover by Edinburgh Univ Press (1993)
Author: Lin Chun

This book should be read by the Japanese intellectuals.
So much impressed with this superb study, I have now got the strong desire to introduce it to the Japanese reader who know little about the whole range of history of the British New Left movement and their struggle for the humane socialism under the cold-war period. As a part of the long history of the emancipation of mankind, the New Left movemnt deserves to be carefully studied and this book has done it quite successfully. As a Japanese leftist, I strongly recommend this book to all those dismayed by the recent total retreat of leftism in Japan.

The most practical guide available
I love the way Lin Pardey just says it like it is. This is not a book full of check lists of ingredients, this is the one book that will prepare you for the experience of:

Shopping in foreign marketplaces
-how to avoid buying cat instead of rabbit
-what to buy first and why
-what foods lasts and what don't fair so well
-where you will find better (and sufficient) provisions and where you will not
-why you should stock up on toilet paper

Dealing with the ups and downs of daily cruising life including:
-how to calm the fish that is thrashing on your deck
-why you should cook as soon as you see a storm coming
-when you're likely to feel tired
-galley tips for making the cooking experience more enjoyable

She also includes a few recipes along the way, and to top it all off, it's a great read! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Highly Recommended Textbook for China's Economic Development
"The China Miracle" provides an extensive study of the China's economic development since the establishment of People's Republic of China in 1949. Since the economic reform began in the late 1970s, China's economy grew rapid, with an average annual GNP growth rate of 10% for the past two decades. The China's experience contrasts greatly with the vast difficulties faced by the transition in the form Soviet Union, and Central and Eastern European countries. The success of China's reform thus has attracted worldwide attention.

The authors attempts to answer four questions that are often raised: 1) Why did Chinese economy grow slowly before the reform in 1979 but then grow rapidly afterwards? 2) Why did cyclical fluctuations - the "vigor/chaos" cycles - become part of China's reform process? 3) Can China continue the trend of reform and development and maintain a sustained, rapid growth in the future? 4) What are the general implications of China's experience for other developing and transition economies?

The book remains optimistic about the future success of China's economic reform. Yet, it also points out several problems with the economic reforms that are needed to be dealt with, such as the difficulties in the reform of State-owned enterprises (SOEs), the increasing unevenness in regional development and income distribution, etc. For more discussions on the SOE reform, the book "Stated-owned Enterprise Reform in China" written by the same authors provides a comprehensive study on this issue.

Overall, this book is a very good textbook and reference to students and scholars who are interested in Chinese economy and its future development.

China's Nuclear Weapons Strategy: Tradition Within Evolution
Published in Hardcover by Lexington Books (1988)
Author: Chong-Pin Lin
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

This book has become a classical book in its field.
This is a study based on the author's Ph.D. dissertation at Georgetown University on international politics. His point of view was new and very different than most of the "western" Chinese political/military strategy researchers/scholars. The author digged into the root of the Communist Chinese military/political philosophy back to two thousand-year old Suntze's strategical philosophy on misleading enemies with ambiguity and sometimes purposely showing one is not strong to avoid attack from its enemy for it's own safety, or only fight a war after thorough calculation of all the risks and well prepared for the fight. The best strategy, according to Suntze two thousand years ago, is to win a war without the fight or destroy enemy's cities with high casualties. In that sense, the Communist China would put in more effort to develop its defensive strength and very unlikely to employ its primitive atomic weapons for offensive usage without very carefully analyzing the situation and the consequences. Although the determination and fast progress of their weaponry should not be treated lightly. This author earned degrees on Geology and MBA in addition to Politcal Science. That broad background of knowledge base helped him to write this book with wide geographical and economical global view on strategy and history. This author was the first scholar who predicted what Communist China would do to press Taiwan for unification by using missle exercise into/over Taiwan's territoy as early as 1991. Which turned out to be a real crisis in spring 1996, when China launched missles at Taiwan Strait that shocked the world and which almost led to the direct confrontation between China and U.S. The bibliograph list is very long and many books/papers's titles were listed with both Chinese characters and English translation or spelling equivalents. The book is hard to find, but you can still locate them in some university bookstores. After the publication of the book, the author had taught Chinese Military Strategy courses at Georgetown Univesity and Pentagon training courses. He is currently teaching at Sun Yi-Sen University in Taiwan as Director of Internation Political Science Research Center and serving for the goverment as Deputy Chairman of Mainland Affairs. I have heard he is preparing an updated version and there is a Chinese translation version published in China in 1996.

Delightful imperial recipes
I received this installment of the Wei Chuan cookbook series for Christmas and immediately tried out a couple of the recipes. I tend to favor the spicier Chinese cuisines, but was pleased with the Beijing style. Try the coriander lamb and the chicken and walnuts in bean sauce--the combination of flavors from all over Asia is apparent in these recipes and makes for a fabulous taste sensation(note: I had to use HaiXian/aka Hoisin sauce instead of the bean paste called for in the chicken/walnut dish--worked just fine). The recipes in this book are easy to make and definitely rewarding for your efforts. I recommend giving Beijing cuisine a try, especially if you like fragrant Chinese food and want a hint of Indian influenced flavors.

Highly Recommended
I have had the pleasure of eating dishes prepared by Angela Chang, and I can testify to their delectable combinations of intriguing flavors and textures. This book captures some of the best dishes that have come from Angela's kitchen -- dishes that rival the best of French and Italian cuisine in their own special way. I haven't yet tried any of the recipes in my own kitchen, but I expect that Angela has discovered and passed along every labor-saving technique that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the dish. She's one terrific cook, I can tell you, and you will be too with her book on your kitchen counter.

MUST-read resource on Taiwan history & culture.
This is a first-choice, must-read book on Taiwan history and culture. It covers most of Taiwan's frontier period as well as colonial era. If you really want to get a feel of what life was like in early Taiwan, this is the book for you. Very accurate and well-written, it reads like a novel. Definitely required reading, I highly recommend it for not just scholarly work, but also for purely pleasure reading.
