An enjoyable, quick, read
This is the second of 4 books in the Pardey's Serrafyn series which describes their many year wanderings around the world on their small wooden sailboat. Both my wife and I read the first ("Cruising with Seraffyn") and had to pick up this next volume. The Pardeys have a very easy and relaxed writing style. Reading these books makes you feel like you are friends with them and enjoying the ride vicariously. They are enjoyable for the both the real and armchair sailor alike.

A novel of suspense in the jungles of New Guinea
"Spiral Road" by Jan De Hartog

This book is superbly written. Its characters are very realistic. The main character, Anton Zorgdrager, receives a "scholarship" to medical school from the Dutch government in exchange for several years of medical services to pygmies, aborigines, and natives of the jungles of Borneo, New Guinea, and other Dutch colonial East Indies islands. From his experiences with a series of atheists and Christians (Salvation Army soldiers) he becomes convinced that he has a gift (a sixth sense) that enables him to immediately recognize symptoms of the early stages of various diseases (leprosy, frambesia, satyriasis) that other doctors are unable to perceive. This leads Zorgdrager to hypothesize that God does not exist, and that the evils of mankind can be cured by a "serum of conversion" which he will discover and which will transform the patient into a God-fearing, pious individual. He, of course, expects someday to be the discoverer of such a vaccine. This hubris leads him into a series of failed human relationships. Self-obsession and thanatos ultimately cause him to forsake the comforts of civilization for the "purification" of his soul, alone in the heart of a terrifying jungle. The suspense is virtually nonstop (there is a somewhat incoherent dream sequence that briefly interrupts the suspense, but this was only a minor irritant in what was otherwise totaly captivating reading). I would put this book in the same class as "Shogun," as mesmerizing the reader with visually descriptive passages of the East Indies (climate, scenery, culture, and humorous accounts of bureaucracy) and intricate character development. It is also reminiscent of Hermann Hesse's "Steppenwolf" and Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," as it is difficult to resist becoming intensely involved with Zorgdrager's character in solitude as the book reaches its climax.

Thinking Men: Masculinity and Its Self-Representation in the Classical Tradition (Leicester-Nottingham Studies in Ancient Society, Vol 7)
Published in Hardcover by Routledge (1998)
Authors: Lin Foxhall and John Salmon
Amazon base price: $105.00

Excellent collection on a new subject!
It is often said that history is about men. This is incorrect. History is about what men do -- politics, war, science, etc which until modern history has been the primarily arenas of males. However, how men see themselves, what it means to be a man, and how each society differs in this regard is a fairly new topic. Foxhall and Salmon collect wonderful and well written essays about how men viewed themselves in Greece and Roman in antiquity. I am using it extensively in the course I'm teaching at Indiana University fall 2000! I highly recommend it to professors in history, classics, and gender studies.

"Time" is on your side
"These tales are of the things that befell gods and men in Yarnith, Averon, and Zarkandhu, and in the other countries of my dreams." No better summary can be given than this. "Time and the Gods" is best described as a collection of invented myths, dreamed up by fantasy pioneer Lord Dunsany.

In it, you will find tales of Slid, an upstart young god; the Dawnchild, who loses her golden ball; the hideous Pestilence; Time and how it overthrew even what the gods favored; laughter, prophecies, doom and hope, punishment, night and day, gods and human beings.

As usual, he wrote enchantingly in this book. His prose is somewhat biblical in manner, which may scare off people who prefer lighter reads. This isn't something you can really skim, as you can't skim the Mabinogion, the Iliad, or the Eddas. Dunsany had an exquisite manner of writing, and he never skimps on lush details and beautiful descriptions.

Fans of classic fantasy -- or readers looking for something fresh and without cliches -- will thoroughly enjoy this collection of ethereal tales. A wonderful read.

Inspiring!
Did you ever have a problem of communicating "do the right thing- for the right reason" to a child? What do you think would happen if your child would sit down and read a book
and share the ideas with you that are discussed in the book?
Russel and Lin Jones' have the uncanny ability to "connect."
Their simple approach should not be considered "simplistic."They obviously have a knack of telling real life stories that are appealling to the young reader. And, probably more importantly their stories have a point that strikes right to the struggles of most young people.
Then if that is not enough the authors challenge the youthful reader. If they have been touched by the words in this book and they want to apply some of what they have learned the authors ask the reader to "pledge" their commitment to be themselves -- to grow and enjoy life. What a neat message. What a neat book! This is probably the only book my two children have read and reread! Now that's saying something about the book!

Woohoo! The rerelease of Under The Green Star!!!!
I cannot BELIEVE this is being re-released!! I've been searching for a copy of this book for every bit of fifteen years. This is the book responsible for awakening me to a lifelong appreciation of science fiction. It's on a par with the likes of the Barsoom books...Dune...the works of Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury. Many new science fiction writers flood the market these days, but virtually none of them can touch the sheer READABILITY and utter creativity of the Green Star story. It's a must-read. How exciting to see it's going to be available to readers again. I will be in LINE to buy this book. If you haven't read it...GO, GO, GO!! It's a wild, wonderful, fascinating read! Thank you so much, Mr. Carter, for giving such a wonderful world to me as a child....you opened the door of imagination in my mind and I've never allowed it to close since. Again, thank you!
