Four tales of Conan as Raider, Thief, Pirate and Mercenary
The four tales in "Conan the Conqueror" cover most of the main aspects of the career of Robert E. Howard's character: raider, thief, pirate, and mercenary. (1) "Black Tears" by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter is one of several pastiches written by the duo based upon hints in Howard's note and letters to fill up gaps in the saga. It takes place after the classic story "A Witch Shall Be Born" (in "Conan the Freebooter") as Conan leads his band of Zuagirs eastward to raid the cities and caravans of the Turanians. King Yezdigerd reacts by sending out a strong force to entrap Conan. (2) Shadows in Zamboula" by Robert E. Howard has Conan destitute after a week of guzzling, gorging, roistering, ... and gambling. This is an above average Conan the Thief story. (3) "The Devil in Iron" by Howard has Conan returning the seas as a pirate, putting together a crew from among his old friends the kozaki and the Red Fellowship of Vilayet Sea. Conan and his crew stumbled upon an inhuman creature and mayhem ensues. (4) The longest story in this collection, "The Flame Knife" was one of four uncompleted manuscripts by Howard completed by de Camp. This novella was originally an adventure in modern Afghanistan entitled "Three-Bladed Doom" staring Francis X. Gordon, Howard's brawny, brawling Irish adventurer. De Camp transformed the story into a Conan tale. After King Yezdigerd crushes the Kozak host, Conan retreats southward with a sizeable band and joins the army of Kobad Shah, king of Iranistan and one of Yezdigred's strongest rivals. These stories are rather standard fare, evidencing in part the problems de Camp and Carter had in filling all the gaps in the Conan saga. Certainly these are stories you would read out of a sense of completeness rather than because there are any real gems to be found within.

One of Lin Carter's Mars Series
This book is one of the 4 (that I know of) books in a series sharing backgrounds, but not characters set in a futuristic Mars where the native civilization is in decline and earthlings prospect for native Martian artifacts. "The Man Who Loved Mars" is probably my favorite, "a rose red city half as old as time..."
a recurring theme. This one is set in the same setting and is a short novel, but an engrossing story. Bad guy with heart of gold, rescued women, outlaws chasing through the desert. It's all there with some twists.

Finally, someone covered the subject right.
I have used this book extensively in lecture preparations for an advanced graduate-level TEM course. There has long been a need for such a book, which covers all aspects of electron interactions in materials with extraordinary depth and clarity. The book is remarkably well organized and clearly written, with illustrations that actually illustrate rather than distract. I found it very readable, yet deep in its content. Technical issues are confronted directly, dealt with properly, and not overly belabored. This is definitely a "physicist's book"; people with weak backgrounds in applied mathematics or quantum mechanics may want to review these topics before plunging in. But if you have the background, you'll be pleased to know that someone has finally covered the subject the way it should be covered.

Bilingual Cookbook
I picked up this book a while ago. It has a lot of really authentic Chinese recipes. I know that because my mother, who is Chinese, scours different cookbooks. In a recent visit, she saw this book and told me she wanted a copy.

The recipes in here seem to be non-Cantonese if that helps you.

Haire-Sargeant plot a bit too daring¿but writing is superb.

Lin Haire-Sargeant almost created a masterpiece. If she had had a far-sighted editor, I think she would have made headlines in the world of literature. Her plot is quite daring, almost to a fault . . . but her highly excellent writing style makes every page a captivating work of art.

Imagine, Charlotte Bronte on a train reading Heathcliff's letter to Catherine 60 years later, forty years after he died . . . Heathcliff (at 18? yrs.) meeting Linton (and not killing him) at Mr. Are's estate . . . at the end of 3 years discovering he is the child of Rochester and Bertha! . . . taking and healing Catherine from her deathbed and going to live together in America for 5 (?) years . . . Linton burying a casket filled with stones instead of Catherine . . . Charlotte and Emily Bronte getting Heathcliff's manuscript from ancient Ms. Dean on her deathbed . . . and then going for a walk (while they taunt each other) past Wuthering Heights.

Again, the points of the plot mentioned above are almost too daring (other sections not mentioned are fascinating and credible: Heathcliff preventing a prize horse's destruction by taming it, etc.), but Haire-Sargeant pulled it off. What I really didn't like was the introduction. She should have offered the novel surrounded with more mystery-just let the reader become mesmerized by the writing. Then "maybe" (or maybe not) have an "postlogue."

Prior to Haire-Sargeant, I believed Bronte gives clues that it is critical Cathy & Heathcliff do not marry--because he is really her half-brother. But Haire-Sargeant has earned 1st stage, so I'll not argue.

I found this book both practical and informative, though a bit limited in the amount of theory. It covers the main pathologies behind male sexual dysfunction from a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective.

It's written to please
For those who have read "Wuthering Heights" and are left with a bitter-sweet feeling of a love lost, this book, "Heathcliff; Return to Wuthering Heights", will rekindle the belief of the hopeless romantic, that true love can conquer all. This book is written in very similar style as is "Wuthering Heights", which gives the illusionn of returning to that era. Most of the book deals with Heathcliff and how he came to his fortune and the adventures that happen to him during his absence from "Wuthering Heights". The development of his character is very dark, darker than is portrayed in "Wuthering Heights", but he feels all is justified in his ultimate goal to reclaim Cathy. The book is obviously written to please the "Wuthering Heights" reader who couldn't bear the fact that Heathcliff and Cathy never had a life together, much as "Scarlett" was written to please the readers of "Gone with the Wind&! quot; with the same concerns. But beyond that, the book is well written and the style stays consistent with the style of Emile Bronte's. It is an enjoyable read, makes the heart beat a little quicker, and brings to rest a story that has haunted many of us since our High School Literature classes.

adequate but some problems
I teach physical anthropology at a community college and twice used a later edition of this book as a text. Physical anthropology can be a difficult subject to teach, especially at an introductory level, because you have to go over so many necessary basics (biology lite, geology lite, anatomy lite, taxonomy lite, evolutionary history lite, intellectual history lite) before getting into the real substance of the field. I chose this book because it skimmed over much of this material relatively quickly without going into too much technical detail. Unfortunately, I then had to add basic material that wasn't in the book.

My students did not like the text. They found its presentation of the material less than clear and the writing style too digressive. I switched to another book which proved to be even less satisfactory. I'm using Haviland again this semester, and will see what the students think this time. There's a new edition out which includes substantial revisions in at least one chapter plus updates to include recent discoveries in human evolution. Whatever its failings, this is a book that has a place, and it has many good points--including its less technical presentation.

Lights! Camera! Love!
Overall I really did like this book. Although it is very predictable, towards the end you are in for a surprise. I did not put this book down the whole time. I recommend this book for a 12 or 13 year old girl who enjoys book with romance and a little bit of suspense. At times in this book I found myself confused, but don't worry it will all come together towards the end. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
