Book could easily be improved
This is on Ok book. It lacks in two things: 1. Proper editing. I don't believe words are mistranslated- they are misspelled. This is the editors fault. 2. Better pictures- The pictures on the outside cover of the book are great- but the insided pictures leave a lot to be desired. They are grainy black and white photos that look like old newspaper photos. They allow you to get the general idea of a posture or stance but details of a particular technique are lost.

Solid Content, Poor Production Quality
It's a shame that this book couldn't have been cleaned up a bit. The translation is awkward, and the pictures are too light. Having said that, I must admit that I really like this book. Books on Hsing-i are not as hard to find as they used to be, but most today choose to cover the same old material. The five fists are included here, as well as the twelve animals, but the author goes on to further cover a couple of forms not available in other English language books. The photos are excellent in CONTENT, but as I said before, they're too light. Still one may overlook the shortcomings of the book and concentrate on the positives. This book would be best read after reading Robert W. Smith's book on the same topic (preferably the original version, if you can find it).

Great for Hebei stylists
This book isn't perfect, but it shows Xingiquan as really practiced. Sun Lu Tang's book is a classic and deals with some of the more esoteric elements. Shou and Yang's book is heavy on song of..., the 5 thises, the 6 thats, etc. and is missing some of the basics. For Hebei style, this book is great and should be in every practitioner's library.

Hook, Line and Sinker: The Complete Angler's Guide to Termin
I would have to disagree with those who have previously "reviewed" this book. This is certainly not a "great" book in my opinion since, it attempts to cover all bases in fishing and, thus, is simply far too general for my tastes. I don't know too many people who a) fly fish for high-mountain trout, and b) bass fish for lake (pond) bass, and c) who troll for marlin. Frankly, I found that I had to skim all of the material that was of no interest to me - alot of material! Further, I found that it was outdated already as it didn't even cover the subject of saltwater "soft" baits. I was honestly looking for a narrower treatise on saltwater fishing - not every kind of fishing imaginable. However, that said, I assume for the price that if you can find a few tidbits of fishing "wisdom," then, you might feel vindicated for having purchased the book. Otherwise, I'd look for publications with a more narrowly defined subject, particularly, on the type of fishing (fly, saltwater, etc.) that the reader is interested in pursuing.

Too much of a purist for Alaska Fish Killers
More than I think I ever wanted to know, but really good stuff! In my part of the world we do industrial fishing - no reel is too big, no rod too stiff - but a guy who wants to do it sportingly is a refreshing point of view, and the techical info is nothing short of superb. That is, if you want to go to the trouble.

Awsome
Trying to explain knots and terminal tackle to other people I fish with can some times be very frustrating, so I handed them this book. I salt and fresh water fish. This book is excellent for all types and levels of angling.

Sweet concept, so-so execution
I want to fully support anything that normalizes or promotes nursing, but I was disappointed in this book. I think the art is pretty awful. (Leopards, I'm sure, would be insulted by their poorly draw depiction.) Some of the text is interesting, such as a description of the baby elephant using it trunk to hug the mother while it nurses. However, other text is just a desription of the picture, such as "a baby lama nurses at sunset." I wish the book had been better done.

My son's now a nursing monkey!
The pictures are a little primitive, and the book would be better as a board book, but my son loves this book. At first he was not interested in it. But once I explained that all the animals were nursing, he caught on. He gets a kick out of the fact that animals nurse like him. I use sign language with my son, though he is hearing, and he began using the sign for monkey when he wanted to nurse, because he likes the nursing monkey in the beginning of the book. I'll ask him if he wants to be a nursing monkey and he smiles. He'll also put his arms around me, like the monkeys in the book, and he'll hug me while nursing. He only nurses like this when he feels like being a monkey.

Another great book that I found is, "I am Made of Mama's Milk". I just found this great board book written from the perspective of a nursing toddler. The author is Mary Olsen. My 18 month old son loves the photos and the beautiful verse. We read it about 10 times at every sitting. You can check it out [online]. I just wanted to spread the word. I think this is the only breastfeeding board book I've seen. It is wonderful!

Great Book!
I am so excited I found this book! I love reading and wanted my son to get the same appreciation for books I have. This book lets him learn to love books and see children and animals nursing! I want to nurse my son for an extended time and it is hard to find encouragement and this book gives me and my son the view of other nursinglings. Thank you so much!!

Liked it!
Good first novel. I lost my mom too when I was in my teens, so I felt what the character felt.

I read this on a whim
A friend of mine had the book, and suggested I read it. I was pleasantly surprised. A good fast and emotional read. The book's cover was a bit much.

I liked it
I borrowed this book from a friend, and after reading it, I would have purchased it. I liked the way the dialogue whistled along-made me think the book could be adapted into a play. Could have developed more of the characters-however for a first effort-quite good.

Red Poppies
I have not yet read the book but just going by the editorial reviews I got a strong feeling it is not a pro-Tibet book but rather written to destroy the view we in the West have about Tibet. The author may not be Chinese but he definitely must be forwarding their agenda. Readers beware not to let yourself be influenced by a piece of fiction no matter how well written it may be.
This being said, I shall now buy the book but read it with caution and a large grain of salt. As fiction and not having anything to do with the real Tibet.

Best find
I can not express the level of enjoyment I got out of this story.
I miss the characters as if they were real and part of my life.

A Excellent Read
I thought this is a wonderful book. The translated prose is exquisite, the characters, especially the protagonist/narrator, are intriguing and the story is a exciting epic adventure. One can't ask for more. I particularly enjoy the slightly detached tone of the narrator's voice, as if it is a inner wisdom speaking through the "idiot" boy.

A previous reviewer hints that the author may have a pro-Chinese government agenda. I feel this is very unfair to the author. Granted, the Tibet he presents to us is sometimes at odds with the way the region has been eulogized in the West. But that's no reason to immediately question the authenticity of the author's voice. I didn't detect any pro-"Red Chinese" passages in the book.
I am sorry to go on a long tangent, but it would be a real shame if people get the wrong impression that this book is written with a unscrupulous political agenda. It's a beautiful work of art about humanity and should be enjoyed as such.

Similar Themes
Shirley Lim's book, Among the White Moon Faces, takes the reader through her life, starting from when she was a young girl in Malaysia, through all of her schooling, and through her move to the United States. Throughout the book she describes her thoughts and her feelings on her various hardships, and really tries to communicate with the reader.

Personally, I felt very ambivalent about the book. I didn't particularly like, nor dislike it. The writing is advanced, and complex, so it's really not for younger readers. If you've read a lot of other works by Asian American writers, you'll notice a lot of similar themes. I didn't feel as if Shirley Lim said anything new, or different with this book. Also, I felt like the second half of the book went very slowly. However, if you enjoy a lot of descriptive writing, or autobiographies, you'll like this book.

Memory Lane for another Malaccan
Knowing the "aunt" ( who worked in the local hospital) personally in Shirley Lim's White Moon Faces and lived in Malacca for the 1st 17 years of my life this book has brought back nostalgic memories of this period in time. I live in Melbourne - Australia now. "Aunt" read the book too. She is pleased to know you are doing fine in the US.

A master of identity
Shirley Geok-Lin Lim's memoir AMONG THE WHITE MOON FACES begins with her girlhood in 1940s Malaysia. From te beginning, her identity is complex and ambivalent: the daughter of a Chinese-speaking father and a Malay-speaking mother who separate when she is young, she is educated in an English-language school in a nation torn over whether to discard English as a remnant of colonialism. Lim's life falls apart when she is six years old. The family loses its money, her mother abandons her abusive husband, and little Shirley is forced on the charity of disdainful relatives. In the years that follow, even as Malaysia gains its independence from Great Britain and careens between multiethnic democracy and Malay nationalism, Shirley tries to make a life for herself. She struggles to attend college and to build a career as a student of literature, despite the potent obstacles she faces in the form of chauvinist male colleagues and boyfriends. Ultimately, she moves to the United States to attend graduate school, just in time to avoid the explosive anti-Chinese riots which put a crushing end to the dream of a nonracial society. Thus marooned in the United States, Lim must struggle once again to make a place for herself, as an Asian-American woman. She earns a doctorate, marries, has a son, becomes a professor (first at an urban community college with a largely Latino student population, later in the suburbs) and discovers feminism. AMONG THE WHITE MOON FACES is an unforgettable experience. It is simultaneously a picaresque tale made up of ironic and often hilarious incidents, an incisive account of post-colonial Malaysia, an inspiring tale of a modern immigrant "making good," and a readable case study of the experience of a thoughtful women in modern society. Perhaps most importantly, the work is a model exposition of the complexities of identity. Lim constantly tries to discover who she is, and where there is a "homeland" for her, where she can be safe and accepted. After taking us through that quest with her, Lim the mature woman makes us understand that we must build our own individual "homes" while working to construct a larger home for society. Lim is unsparing about the limitations of most people's vision, but she does not hector, and she is no more sparing of herself for being unsure about her own views (one classic anecdote recounts her ambivalent relations with the Latino apartment dwellers who take over the front stoop of her house). Fortunately, the little girl who was once constantly punished for telling the truth has not learned her lesson. She continues to enlighten us and remind us of our national purpose as Americans to forge an inclusive and varied society.

Not technically a technical book
If you want to know how to use or develop on an AS/400, this is definitely not your book. If, however, your goal is to develop a basic understanding of what an AS/400 actually is and what it does, it's not a bad choice.

This is a book that I think would sit well in the office of a manager who has only peripheral involvement with the management of an AS/400 system. It's also not a bad introduction to the AS/400.

I still keep this one in my office along with my other related books, but I've never been happy with what I got for the money.

A great text and manual!
This book is an excellent training reference and is structured much like a classic school text. It's printed nicely, large pages, good diagrams, and enough white space to off-set the important points in each section. This is very easy to study and scan for answers when you need a quick reference in fundamental AS/400 areas. Much of the contents are presented by IBM in their manuals, but we all know how stimulating they are! George Lin presents the lessons in a methodical manner. I have tons of highlighted sentences and dozens of bookmarks. This is a necessary text for anyone beginning in AS/400 operations. As I write this, the newer OS/400 dates this text somewhat. Perhaps George will refresh this for OS/400 V5R1? I'd buy it!

Very useful for a new comer working on AS/400
A very useful book giving an overview of AS/400 system and commonly used utilities/programming tools.

The concepts are explained in simple terms. There are many examples, lab excercises etc to make the reader comfortable with the system.

An essential book for any person who is just getting in to As/400 system.

Lin Lougheed
Lougheed's grasp of English grammar is at best arbitrary. The exercises in the grammar section are therefore replete with mistakes and irrelevancies which test the patience even of an intermediate class.

Efficient and effective!
This book has proven successful in preparing our students for the TOEIC exam as shown in our control exams for measuring language learning progress. I recommend it for intermediate level students. There is also an Introductory Course by the same author for Elementary Students which is as good as this one.

Excellent!
Instructions absolutely clear. Lets students use knowledge of outside world. Wide variety of vocabulary. Allows students to discuss reasons for choices when checking answers. Excellent grammar patterns. Most useful Patterns to Remember sections. Very good reading comprehension questions.

A little too tough to decipher...
This is the second such book I have bought on the subject of Face Reading. The illustrations were difficult to follow and it's tough for the reader to develop a "user friendly" guide after completion. Rather, I suggest that you try "The Naked Face" by Young, which was far easier to interpret. Sure, if one were a practioner for 2 decades, then they could decipher the illustrations, but the learning curve was rather steep. Give the other book a glance, that's my opinion.

Very Interesting
This is a very good book if you are interested in face reading. It holds a lot of interesting information and detail about the face, eyes, nose, eyebrows, lips, etc. The reason why I didn't rate it as 5 stars is because the illustrations look the same to me and its really hard to tell the difference between certain shapes. More realistic pictures instead of drawings would do the trick.

Very Interesting and enlightening
I read and collect books on this subject. This book is one of my favorites. I find many facets of Chinese culture interesting and thought provoking. Inside this book I have found other subjects that I have enjoyed reading up on and exploring. It is well written and very interesting and laid out well. And I have learned much more about myself than I would have guessed when I started reading this book.

not for vegetarians!
I had hoped that there would be a fair amount of vegetarian recipes in this book but was very disappointed to find precious few.

Must have for lovers of spicy food
The Wei Chuan series of cookbooks are must haves for anyone interested in cooking Chinese cuisine. I am particularly fond of SzeChwan style food so this cookbook was a natural choice for me. This book has descriptions for preparations of special food items that is very helpful. I especially recommend this book for anyone who loves spicy food (the kung pao recipes alone make the book worth buying). For anyone who wants vegetarian food Sze Chwan style won't be the right choice--I would recommend buying Wei Chuan's Indian cuisine cookbook or their Simply Vegetarian cookbook instead.

Brought the chef out of me!
Wei Chuan's collection of cookbooks are fabulous. All the recipes are as authentic as it gets. Recipes are easy to follow and it actually TASTES good. I am planning to get the whole collection of Wei Chuan's cookbooks.
