a warm, sweet story for Christmastime
I have been looking for this book for two years, after I borrowed it from a library. Both of my kids, 3 and 1 at the time, loved it, but so did my husband and I. This is a sweet story about the animals who come to give their gifts to the baby Jesus. The text is in verse and is easy to understand, but will appeal to all ages. The illustrations are photos of beautifully painted scenes on a wood background. It will be a family favorite in our house for many years.

Cloudy Jewel
Having read most of Grace Livingston Hill's books, I know that they are not all gems. This book, however, truly is one. The story is largely about the re-established relationship between the aunt and her college-aged niece and nephew, and how, through the loveliness of the aunt's character, her example and guidance, they come to know God. All the usual storyline elements are included. The aunt, who has been the silent suffering servant for most of her life, is rewarded with the love of the two (wealthy) children of her dead brother, to fill the place of the children she never had. Unkind relatives try unsuccessfully to thwart their plans. She and the niece and nephew find a house and make it into a beautiful home, in which many of their college friends enjoy spending time. Also, romance enters the picture for each of the main characters. A lovely, truly spiritual book that examines various Biblical issues.

The research that went into the background of this story is amazing. I would read other novels by this author.

SCI-FI commedy, Space Opera delicatesse
The first thing that strikes you when starting this book is the pace at wich WJW leads you through his witty plot, not leaving your mind at rest untill you have finished the book... then leaving you with a craving for more. And a sequel of this book would be like "la crême de la crême"

Great read, but let the reader beware
This is the most sensational volume to appear so far in Yale University Press's rapidly growing library on Soviet espionage during the 1930s and 40s. The authors-espionage journalist Nigel West (pseudonym of Rupert Allason, a Conservative ex-MP) and Oleg Tsarev, a former KGB operative posted to London-accessed Moscow Center files to confirm, disconfirm, or extend what has long been known, believed, or suspected about the Cambridge Five (Kim Philby, Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, Anthony Blunt, and John Cairncross) as well as a host of lesser but highly effective agents. Richly detailed and slickly written, The Crown Jewels is a riveting read and a potential supplement to Allen Weinstein and Alexander Vassilev's The Haunted Wood and another Yale volume Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America by John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr. But let the reader beware: West does not play entirely straight with the reader. Wrapping up a long and important chapter on Cairncross, he asserts that after exposure in 1979, the first atomic spy "fled to France and completed his memoirs shortly before his death in 1995." In fact, Cairncross lived in Italy for well over a decade after The London Times named him and a half-dozen "mole journalists" (including West) began detailing his activities, often with Cairncross's limited and self-serving cooperation. But-most interestingly-during Cairncross's last months, spent not in France but in the Cotswolds (with the permission of H.M. Government), West himself ghost-wrote, packaged, and marketed the first version of the verbally incapacitated Fifth Man's "recollections", The Enigma Spy. Based on Cairncross's fragmentary notes and his second wife's recollections of his table talk, that book, published in 1997, is now widely discredited. Why the mis- (and dis-) information? Why the coverup of West's intimate connection with Cairncross? Could this book contain other such "problems"? Persuasive as The Crown Jewels may be, it must be read with a gimlet eye.

I discovered moths!
As an avid butterfly watcher and birder, I couldn't help but notice the occasional moth while on my forays. I always found them interesting, and even picked up an old field guide to begin to learn them. While doing an internet search for moths, I discovered Mr. Himmelman's book and ordered it.
It arrived in the morning and by early evening I had read it cover to cover! Good thing it was a Saturday - Wow! While the topic is of moths, Himmelman could have been writing about any creature. His curiosity is contageous and he is a comfortable, and often humorous, guide to have accompany you through this topic. I feel like I know him.
I also love the line drawings sprinkled generously throughout (one shows godzilla going after mothra) and his beautiful photos! To the best of my knowledge there is no other book out there (I looked) that treats the "nightime jewels" with such passion, humor, and out and out information.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in nature.

You'll Go Back to This Book Again and Again
One cannot absorb this book in one reading. There is just too much to see and learn. The writer speaks in English English, so an American must change mental gears with a few of her terms(Adds a little spice!)Knowing the existing conditions when a new development in design or materials began helps to set the scene in your mind. While there are many illustrations, there are not as many as in other quality books - but this book's strong point is in the history of the times and of the designers and manufacturers.

Missing recipe
As a native of Jamaica I knew exactly what to look for in this book. Although this book contained many wonderful recipes from my country I was dismayed to find that it did not contain the recepe for Jamaican rum cake or any kind of fruit cake recipes. This cake is a tradition in most Jamaican households during the Christmas holidays and is very popular at weddings. A Jamaican wedding is not complete without rum cake or fruit cake.I hope the author will take this into consideration when writing the international edition.
