Panaceas from Ambiguity
The shallow in search of the superficial requires no better example than this thankfully brief tome. It is an excellent companion to "It Takes a Village" in its pseudo-intellectual banalities.

In Search of Community
Authors Strasburg and Clooney have offered some simple and important suggestions concerning how to live together in true community. They set the stage by going back in history and delving into the wisdom expressed by philosophers and statesmen. Through the course of the book, they discuss modern-day examples of community that works.

The background material is transformed into simple, but concrete suggestions of what it takes for a truly successful community to develop. The authors' ideas are not revolutionary, but they are stated well and serve to remind us all of what we as individuals need to do.

In Search of Community is thought-provoking and an easy read. It is obviously based on thorough research, yet it is not overly scholarly. It's very simplicity makes it an interesting and very useful book.

Good, but lacking.
I concur with the other reviewer on most points stated. It's an easy, simple read, and unobtrusive mentally as well as physically. However...I feel that some subjects ARE danced around, rather than dealt with. Issues of sex/sexuality are, at best, skimmed. I have no interest in minute by minute detailing of sexual encounters. But to bypass whole realms of sexual exploration of such a dynamic young man is unfair to the curious reader. I also disagree with the notion that this IS OK for a first time reader. I'm of the mind that your first venture into someones life (especially Dean!) should be commited and enlightening. Here you will find little more than could be learned from a 30 minute t.v. blurb on Dean. I voraciously consume all Dean bios, hence I bought this regardless of my suspicions (and later confirmations) about its shortcomings. I 'liked' the book, but can see no REAL NEED for this book in a serious collection. It's fantastic for someone doing an essay or report on Dean-it might even make them a true fan. But please buy a book that will not only draw you in completely, but leave you with a full knowledge of all sides of James Dean. Buy "Little Boy Lost" by Joe Hyams,"James Dean-Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Paul Alexander, and "James Dean-Mutant King" by David Dalton. These are of a worthy caliber to display proudly in a personal collection of LITERATURE.

Short and to the Point: James Dean by William Hall
The editor describes the Sutton Pocket Biographies as "Highly readable brief lives of those who have played a significant part in history, and whose contributions still influence contemporary culture". This phrase neatly summarizes "James Dean" by William Hall very well.

It is a short book, about 100 small pages. Almost 50 years since his death, James Dean still has a substantial influence on contemporary culture. The book covers the principal facts and chronology of James Dean's short life. There is no whitewashing of gay issues, no unsubstantiated unsavory speculations and no new material. As such it is a useful and inexpensive book for someone who wants "Just give me the facts, m'am". It is a useful introduction to the life of James Dean if this is the first biography that you are reading. True die-hard fans will want more.

The only thing evil about this book is buying it!!
I almost didn't review this book because I have difficulty giving it even a single star, or as Mr. Toland would say...one, single star alone by itself. I will save this book to read with friends after a dinner party for a good laugh.

bright light big city masterpiece summons evil monster
Celebrated short story author and san francisco native creates a work of pure horror in the possibility of maleficus. Author Jim Toland's work surprises even ardent followers of his work and yields a tale which is sure to be passed on to friends in need of a eye opening adrenalizing all night read. Only one thing, you better buy a night light for when it's over because maleficus might not leave....................

Chisholm Massacre

Mississippi during reconstruction.
After the Civil War, a politically active judge arouses the anger of the KKK and is led off to jail on trumped up charges. His family, sensing danger, follows him there in hopes of preventing violance. A mob breaks into the jail, and kills the judge, his daughter, and his son. This is a true story of Mississippi during reconstruction and is sometimes assigned as college course-work to help paint a picture of the times. The book focuses on corruption, racism, and the political sea-change from the "North-friendly" Republican party to the more "South-friendly" Democratic party. There were newspaper articles about the incident, and the book includes copies of letters sent to the grieving family from around the country. The book also lists names of those that participated in the massacre.

Matt's Book Review
When I started reading "Commanding Voices Of Blue And Grey" By Brian M. Thomson, I'll admit I wasn't exactly thrilled to read it, but after a while it started to grow on me. The book was kind of hard to read because it wasn't in a story format like I'm used to. This book didn't really have a main character through the whole book, and it was kind of like a textbook, except much more interesting. Brian M. Thomson did a terrific job turning the experiences of different people that served in the civil war into short story like scenes. This book had some good battle scenes and some very important people that turned the tide in the war. This book was extremely good about showing both sides of the story. This book helped me completely understand the civil war and it was also surprisingly good.

Readable and entertaining
The hero of this book, Joe Creed, is a sleezebag paparazzo, which is the singular noun for paparazzi. He has few positive attributes. He would do anything to get a good photograph so that he can sell it to the newspapers. He has an ex-wife whom he hates. He even hates his young son. This unendearing character holds our attention because of his complete lack of scruples. What makes this book so satisfying is that, despite himself, he does the decent thing, and at the end of the book, he becomes it's hero. It even has the corps of the paparazzi charging to the rescue like the calvary, which has got to be one of the cleverest twists I have ever read. The book is genuinely frightening. If the end doesn't quite resolve itself satisfactory, then the rest of the book succeeds in carrying you effortlessly from one page to the next.

This is kind of a boring book...
"Data About Us: Statistics" is one of the Connected Mathematics Project units, a set of units designated for grades 6-8. "Data About Us: Statistics" explores 4 different types of graphs- line plots, bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, and coordinate graphs, along with the 3 averages- mode, median, and mean. Instead of chapters, the book has investigations, and has 5 of them. Each investigation explores a different concept. In each investigation, there a certain number of sections. Each investigation has up to 5 sections. In each section, there is a problem. The problems are named according to what the investigation and section is. For example, if the problem is in Investigation 1, Section 1.2, the problem is called Problem 1.2. Following each investigation is a lengthy set of ACE (Applications-Connections-Extensions) questions. They are mostly reasoning and critical thinking but also include drawing graphs. At the end of the unit, there is a unit project in which you conduct a survey regarding typical characteristics of a middle schooler, make graphs, analyze the data, and conclude what the typical characteristics are. So, all in all, I would give this text 3 out of 5 stars because some of the questions are quite repetitive and moronic (e.g. How do you find the mean?) and require sentences and sentences of reasoning.

A practical guide for the manager
I first used this book as a student-I found it useful then, today I insist that all managers reporting to me review, and use, the concepts and techniques provided by the authors.

The book is useful, in that concepts are well explained, the examples are relevant, but most important for me is that it provides managers who have little or no experience in determining project costs with a handy means (including formulae and worked examples) of doing so.

I have tried to get copies of the most recent edition, the popularity seems to be such that the book is sold out. I most readily recommend this to anyone who needs to justify capital expenditure, who needs to do project costing, and who has to prepare proposals for submission to the boss (or the board of directors)in order to obtain funds for capital expansion, refurbishment or simply equipment upgrades.

Some Good Discussions, Often Poorly Illustrated
The book contains some good discussions on overpopulation, food supplies, water pollution and other environmental issues. However, more detailed introductions are required on plate tectonics and soils so that novice readers may better understand earthquakes and food production, respectively. Each chapter contains a number of useful math problems and thought questions. There are also numerous tables of data, which are interesting, but may overwhelm some students. Some of these data may be more understandable if they were graphed. All of the photographs are in black and white, but are usually satisfactory. However, many of the illustrations are only rough sketches and do not adequately illustrate important concepts for beginning undergraduates (as examples: plate margins [Figure 3.3, p. 75] and active and passive coastlines [Figure 3.21, p. 109]).
