Highly readable and timely review of Vasc Surgery.
For most residents and fellows, having a volume that strikes a balance between a tome and a pocket handbook offers the chance of reading in depth without worrying about lugging twenty pounds and needing disk surgery. About the size of a hard cover SESAP book (if they came in hard cover), this book offers both leading edge data and useful how-to tips from top authors in the field. As books go, the fresher the publication date, the less literature searching one must do to top off on current information meaning now is the time to get this book (copywritten 1999). Make sure to read the contents before you buy as it may not suit your needs.

Prison Slang: Words and Expressions Depicting Life Behind Bars

Authors: William K. Bentley and James M. Corbett
Amazon base price: $28.50

First rate
With my wayward brother George doing another spell in the jug this guide helped me learn all about prison argot. It gives me no pleasure to see him there behind the glass with his botched tattoo, looking all forlorn and grovelling for phone-cards, but at least I can now ask him whether he's yet been hammed by any of his wing's gravy hounds; which is a start.

It gives a great deal of background information on public life during the times of the Bible. It gets into somewhat on how what gave Moses symbolizes what a Christian should do in his/ her life.

Queering Elementary Education
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (28 November, 1999)
Authors: William J. Letts and James T. Sears
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Every elementary school teacher must read this!
"Children don't need to hear about any sexual issues at their age, but I'm not a homophobe or anything." "Children are innocent, so I wouldn't bring up gay issues, but I'm not a homophobe or anything." "I don't challenge children that use homophobic words because they just mean 'jerk', but I'm not a homophobe or anything." Every gay elementary school teacher and every gay rights activist has heard these lies. Finally, there is a book that addresses such non-sense. And this is a book by teachers for teachers. This book explains how pervasive homophobia is in the primary school system and it offers valuable ways to stop the prejudice. Too many education texts are written by teachers that are only used to being read by their students. The writers here are good (or well edited, at least) and their work has been strongly influnced by multiculturalism, feminism, and upper-level academic theory. The anthology includes pieces by women and people of color. It even has a piece by straight educators and one by an Australian activist. I think the editors are going to lose many readers due to their overly easy use of the word "queer", but for those who choose to continue reading, they will like what they find.

The Question of Irish Identity in the Writings of William Butler Yeats and James Joyce
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (December, 1998)
Authors: Eugene O'Brien and Eugene C'Brien
Amazon base price: $109.95

European Dimensions of Irishness
This is a brilliant book. It's the first time I've read about the politics of Irish literature written in this way, and I've read a lot of books about Yeats and Joyce, as well as some theory. However, here, the fusion of both creates a work which is part of a new way of looking at Irishness along the lines of Gibbons, Kearney and Lloyd, though O'Brien would not be in complete agreement with some of their ideas. His discourse, however, is parallel to that of these writers. It's a different, more challenging, kind of Irish studies.
It's a difficult argument with a lot of complex theory coming at you from every angle. He makes use of Derrida, Levinas and Adorno to create the structure through which he views the writings of Yeats and Joyce, and their constructions of Irishness. In some ways, this is really two books, with an analysis of the theoretical difficulties of the creation of structures of identity as well as an application of this model to the work of Yeats and Joyce.

But, O'Brien writes clearly and some of the more arcane practitioners of critical and literary theory could take lessons from his style and argument. He discusses Joyce and Yeats in the context of their time, and then shows how they transcend that context through a placement of identity within an imaginary European context. He makes connections between Yeats and joyce (who are often seen as being at two different ends of the spectrum) and sees both as offering different but related perspectives on identity.
His close readings are acute and there is plenty of quotation.
It's a scholarly book, very good for postgraduates and people working in the field. perhaps only the brighter undergrads should attempt it.
Irish studies has needed this theoretical input for some time and it's good to see what we might call "high theory" being applied to such canonical figures.
It's a first book (I gather from the acknowledgments, and as such, is a stunning debut. I look forward to reading more, and from the Amazon search, it seems there are more on the way!

Reading Joyce Politically (Florida James Joyce Series)
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (August, 1997)
Authors: Trevor I. Williams, Trevor L. Williams, and Zack Bowen
Amazon base price: $55.00

Great to be able to understand a book that deals with theory
This is one of the best books on Joyce that I, a grad student, have read in a long time. It is superbly well written and makes Joyce relevant to what's going on today. The second chapter was a bit slow going, but the rest was really riveting stuff. Would recommend it for anyone who wants a good introduction to Dubliners, Portrait of the Artist, and Ulysses. Disappointing the author has nothing to say about Finnegans Wake.

Wow!
I bought this book by accident. I was in a bookstore looking for another book, but ended up walking out with Wilberforce's enduring classic. I first encountered Wilberforce when reading a biography of the American abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Since that time I have had the opportunity to read the life story of the English Great Emancipator himself. Wilberforce may have been small and frail in physical stature but his moral stature is that of a giant. For decades, Wilberforce, an MP in the British Parliament, labored toward two great ends: 1. To abolish the slave trade and slavery itself within Great Britain. 2. To change the decadent and decaying moral culture of his homeland. Real Christianity was written toward goal #2. On reading Real Christianity it is easy to see why it remained an English bestseller for 50 years! Wilberforce's writing is like the man himself. Compassionate, logical, persuasive, determined, humorous, and fair-minded.

Comprehensive, Well Organized, Well Researched
As a real estate investor I often refer to this book when I am in need help making a decision. It is the next best thing to having a seasoned partner who has been through many market cycles. As a Licensed Commercial Real Estate Appraiser and Broker I am impressed with the material as well as how it is presented. While lifetime of practical knoweledge is somehow reduced to a single 900 page plus book, it is not "dumbed down" for mass appeal purposes. Although I was introduced to this book through a course at Boston University I found it's format more interesting than academic. When investing your money in real estate it is better to read a book like this and learn than, to "just do it" and learn the hard way, believe me. This book is a keeper for your professional library.

Revisiting Dr. Williams
Delightful, anecdotal, touching remembrances of the premiere American modernist poet by the premiere American modernist publisher. More conversation than dissertation, the slim book consists of a single light, often rambling but highly readable poem. It's a must-read for any devotee of Williams and provides great insight into the relationship that fostered and nutured the development of New Directions. Also includes Paterson-like snippets of prose as well as Kenneth Rexroth's moving farewell poem to Dr. Williams.

the importance of responsibility
H. Richard Niebuhr's The Responsible Self is a classic in Christian ethics. Niebuhr argues that humans are neither simply 'goal seeking' creatures nor simply 'rule-following' creatures, but are 'responsive' and hence, responsible. We are 'answerers' who must first ask "What is going on here?" and then respond to that assessment with a 'fitting' answer. The importance of this short and readable work should not be underestimated. Niebuhr's approach spawned an interest in perspective and vision in ethics that is carried on by contemporary thinkers such as James Gustafson and Stanley Hauerwas.
