Resurrection from the Underground: Feodor Dostoevsky

A brilliant book on Dostoevsky
I highly recommend this brilliant book on Dostoevsky, which examines his work from a religious perspective. The writing is superb, the insights fascinating and momentous, and the interplay between biography and literature judicious. The life may not illuminate the works, but the works certainly illuminate the life: Girard reads Dostoevsky's career as a struggle to conquer pride, a struggle that ended in the serene victory that is The Brothers Karamazov. Easily the best essay on Dostoevsky I have ever read.

Well-written and well-researched biography
Boylan has carefully documented both the public and private lives of two almost forgotten socialists of the early 20th century. His book is well written and makes for entertaining reading as well as fine scholarship of an overlooked era in American politics.

A dialogue as sharp as a cutting-edge radio play
Collaboratively written by James Edwin Alexander and William R. Burkett, The Secret Court Martial Of Admiral Kimmel: Pearl Harbor Revisited is a fictional courtroom drama concerning a court-martial trial that never took place -- but perhaps should have. It revolves around Admiral Kimmel, Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the man who received the lion's share of the blame for the Japanese sneak attack that took place on December 7, 1941. Admiral Kimmel asked for a court martial to clear his name, but his request was never granted by the War Department. Highly recommended reading, especially for World War II military buffs, The Secret Court Martial Of Admiral Kimmel is a tightly-written testimony, composed and presented in the style of a courtroom transcript, and with a dialogue as sharp as a cutting-edge radio play, so deftly endowed with a powerful sense of tone and conviction that the reader will find it hard to believe that this is, in fact, a work of historical fiction.

Belief in a personal immortality can be energizing
Drawing upon the works of William James and the principles of American Pragmatism, Eugene Fontinell addresses the question of whether or not we who have been affected by the scientific, intellectual, and experimental revolutions of modern and contemporary times still hold a coherent and consistent belief in an immortality for individual human beings. Self, God, And Immortality: A Jamesian Investigation also examines the present relationship of reason to faith -- and if there are justifying reasons for faith. Fontinell shows that, far from diverting attention and energies from the crucial tasks confronting us here and now, belief in a personal immortality can be energizing and life enhancing, as well as stimulating co-operative efforts to create a richer and more humane community. Self, God, And Immortality is emphatically recommended reading for students of religion, spirituality, philosophy, and metaphysics.

Refreshing Viewpoints in an Old Debate
The debate surrounding Shakespeare's Sonnets has raged on for a long time, and much of the scholarship on them has remained nebulous, repetitive, and overworked. James Schiffer's volume, however, is refreshingly brilliant and provocative: the essays he includes address an array of topics that are often overlooked, while many of the arguments are simultaneously revisionist and visionary, challenging the conventional wisdom that has guided the criticism on the Sonnets for so long. And what's even better, the arguments are beautifully and meticulously presented, crafted by some of the foremost Shakespeareans of our time.

Word-music
This is a wonderful collection of poetry readings by some of the best actors in the world. If you allow yourself only one tape of poetry, I would recommend this one. The rendition of Lawrence's "The Snake" is spellbining, and the reading of Macneil's "A Death in the Family" is quietlly gut-wrenching. And you will be surprised how well Bill Shatner recites about whales. Buy this tape, and you will listen to it again and again.

Good stuff
Now - this kind of manuals are few and far between, so get one before they run out.
I learned 2 "new" moves thanks to this book, and I think, that this is one of the better whitewater kayaking manuals around.
I would recommend it for anyone, who's serious about his/hers stuff, be it squirt- or playboating.
The lingo can be difficult at first, if you are not one of the baptised, but facts are hard nevertheless.
Instruction as a whole makes sense, but sometimes one needs the detailed illustrations, some of which will knot your brains while you try to figure what's going on.
Some of the moves can be hard to understand at first, especially if you're new in the sport, but it's worth it.
