19 mini-masterpieces
The Library of America has published 5 volumes of Henry Jame stories, covering 1864 - 1910, and I'm hooked. Henry James has to be read slowly; every word he writes seems to matter to the story. He is a master craftman of the English language, and can say so much without being explicit.

James wrote most of these 19 short stories while living in London and visiting the continent. This volume of his stories starts with "Professor Fargo" and ends with "The Author of 'Beltraffio'". But, perhaps the most famous of the stories included here is "Daisy Miller: A Study." Few, if any, of these stories will disappoint a 20th century reader.

Unlike some fortunate reviewers, who have had careers as librarians or who have degrees in English Literatue, I started reading authors like Henry James on my own. I approach a author just for the pleasure of reading his/her work. I started reading Henry James with these short stories and have graduated to his novels. At first his writing seemed slow and stiff. But, once I settled into the cadence of his writing, I concluded that this suited the formality of the upper classes he wrote about. Now, I can't seem to put down one of his stories until the end.

James wrote so much during his life that it seems impossible to read all that he wrote, but I think I'll try.

The History of Weather
Published in Hardcover by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. (October, 1998)
Author: James Thaxter Williams

Used price: $536.80

Highly recommended, "reader-friendly", well written.
In The History Of Weather, James Williams provides a fascinating meteorological history that will prove informative for science students and the non-specialist general reading public. Williams begins by describing earth's origin, subsequent cooling and gradual modification into a beautiful, essential, benevolent plant with water and an atmosphere hospitable to life. He goes on to discuss the interacting dynamics of Earth's four physical spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere) and how they evolved in concert and remain balanced. He then chronicles the ice ages and the ascent of homo sapiens. From there we are treated to chapters on the pre-dawn of civilization, the Greek experience, the age of technology, latent heat and storms, modern meteorology's history and theory, 20th century discoveries, and the "new meteorology" based forecasting. The History Of Weather concludes with chapters on the history of the climate, the ice ages, the sun, air, and "Meteorosensivity and Other Folk Lore". Exceptionally well written and presented, with an exentsive section of references and an index, The History Of Weather is a very highly recommended, "reader friendly" addition to school and community library weather science and meteorological studies collections.

A story which captures the imagination
I first read this story several years ago and over time, it has remained vividly in my memory. I can recall scenes and dialogues and picture the images painted by Ms. Williams' words in my mind. Katie's story draws you in before you realize it and you are swept into the mountain country of Arizona in the Old West, struggling along side an orphaned family. Ms. Williams brings the era and the people alive, touching fiction with history. Almost all the characters, especially Katie and Bill, offer something of interest to the reader - you get the sense that each has his or her own story. "Home Mountain" is a sweet story (a bit unrealistic), a historical romance without a doubt, but something about it lingers. It is a tale of the strength of spirit, of family and of love and if you enjoy historical stories, it is worth a read.

Anatomy explained
Most anatomy books are dry. I'm a radiology resident, and have looked through several trying to find one that would be easily digestible. This is the one. The text is full of interesting explanations of structure and function from the standpoint of evolutionary biology. Why do the testicles descend from the abdomen during development? The authors go back to the mesonephros of primitive ocean vertebrates and explain it in a few simple sentences.
Pictures are more descriptive than accurate; it's no atlas. But if you like learning by understanding instead of by rote, I think this book will do you proud.

Book shows why Neel Reid was one of greatest of the South.
The book gives history and insight on his life and follows his working history from Macon to Florida to Atlanta. His attention to detail is pointed out in many chapters and the photography along with the orginal drawings are a good touch. If your looking for some ideas or maybe a facade to copy this would be a excellent book. Most of his houses are timeless designs and the interior views and elevation views are stunning.

In November 1951, Bill Bast was a fellow theater arts studentwith James Dean at UCLA. When Dean was booted out of his collegefraternity, he proposed to Bast that they rent an apartment together, which they soon did. A friendship developed which lasted until Dean's death. Bast's book is a sensitive memoir of Dean, was the first book published about the actor, and has been a vital source for other biographers since then.

The James Family: Or how to Educate a Brood of Geniuses
This wonderful book tells the story of where the James family and its money came from, how Henry Sr. almost lost his inheritance for the frivolity of buying too many books, then reclaimed it and used it to raise the most remarkable intellectual family yet in American history. The book is big, which gives it enough space to delve into the tragedy of the two younger James brothers, the maturation of William and Henry Jr., and the closeted life of Alice.

I came away with a new respect for the somewhat eccentric Henry Sr., with his diverse interests in educational philosophy, Swedenborg, and Emerson. He is the under-sung hero of this narrative and its true author.

Perhaps I enjoyed the book most of all because it allowed me to feel almost a part of the family, to live what to me is a fantasy. If you feel yourself a kindred spirit to William, Henry, Jr., or Sr., or Alice, I would heartily recommend this book.

No such thing as an Ex-catholic
This book has been a classic in Joyce studies for many years. Joyce had said famously that if you wanted to understand his writing you first had to understand Aquinas. Jumping off from this typically Joycean hyperbole, Noon explicates Joyce's Catholicism from the angle of Thomistic Aesthetics. A technical/theological subject made very readable. A must for any wannabe Joyce scholar .
