It's the thought that counts...
Michael Chacon, et al give a good attempt to easy your studying for the 70-218, Managing a Microsoft Windows 2000 Network Environment. However, this edition is riddled with obvious errors. Nearly half of these errors are contributed to poor wording (i.e. When you boot a DHCP client for the first time... listens for a lease offer , and chooses one it likes." page 98 -- DHCP clients cannot choose anything. They accept the first address that they receive. The other half are just errors (i.e. "Even though IIS is built into Windows 2000 Server, it is not installed by default." page 712 -- oh yes it is, and you should be aware of that with all the IIS hacks lately. However, the authors are quick to respond to these errors when brought to their attention and Sybex does a great job of making the corrections available on their website. Overall, the book makes a fine attempt to get you skilled in Windows 2000 network management. My only suggestion would be is not to use this book as your only source.

The standard
THere are a few things I would change with this book, but, like the other Sybex/Chellis/Donald certification books, these are the standard. This MCSA exam covers a wide swath of topics, so take it last. You'll see a lot of overlap. Know group policies. I even saw and active directory question on the exam, and was a bit surprised. The book did a good job preparing me in general.

All you need and more to pass your exam
This book cover everything you should know before attempting to pass the 70-218 exam assuming that you already study and passed the 70-215 exam. It goes beyond the scope of the exam in the area of intra and inter-site active directory replication (at least for the exam that I passed) but it helped me to understand the overall concept. The explanations are simple but effective (not lile the microsoft book).I also used the sybex tcp/ip jumpstart book who is very good at explaining the concept of subnetting.

For review day prior to test
Content is pretty good and to the point. Use this book if didn't get time to finish one of those huge study guides, but don't just use this book alone.

Great Resource
Thought the book covered most of the questions presented on the actual exam. You can pass the exam by reading this book alone with some additional hands-on practice with NT Server.

Used with Transcender
Here're my results from using the Exam Notes in combination with the transcender exams:

Networking Essentials: 933, Workstation: 833, Server: 933

I've found the Exam Notes series to be portable and easy to read. I didn't even touch the other thick study guides that I bought to pass these exams.

WorthWhile!
After taking a semester-long WORD 2000 class at the local community college, I was still nervous about taking the MOUS test. I got this book and faithfully read and worked my way through it. Believe it or not, it cleared up some questions I had never gotten answers to in my class, and also taught me a few shortcuts not presented in class.

And I passed the exam!

This book helped me pass the MOUS Expert exam...
After going through this book lesson by lesson, I passed the MOUS Word 2000 Expert exam with flying colors. I like the fact that the lessons in the book get progressively harder as you go through it. The book starts out with opening, saving, and closing documents and works right up through creating and editing Macros. I found the lessons to be moderately interesting, so I wasn't bored as I went through the book.

There are a few mistakes in the book and CD, but not so many mistakes that I would give it a bad review. If you study this book cover to cover, you should have no problems when it comes time to take the exam.

Outstanding Book
Each skill is presented on two facing pages, with the step-by-step instruction on the left page, and large screen illustrations on the right. Valuable hands-on experience is applied throughout the instruction pages. Then each section has a practice which uses the CD-ROM material for concepts review, skills review, and finally a visual workshop. I am going to purchase the other Coriolis books on Excel, Powerpoint, and Access.

this book seems to be the best in those that i have seen by my own eyes. Try it i am sure it won't let you down. This all i can say becouse iam an aspiring mcse student. I have alreaduy tried some books but this is just giving me the real things i need. If you're a Mcse please write to me.

Wondering about certifications?
This book is an EXCELLENT source of what to know and how to go about finding it out, when it comes to certifications. Ed Tittel knew what he was doing when he put these words to paper, and into a book. I highly recommend this to someone who wants to get started in the computer certification areas.

Better than I thought it would be...
I thought this would be just another crime novel to help me fall asleep at night....BUT what makes the work of Bill Eidson outstanding is that this is just plain GOOD writing.
Some parts of the plot were predictable and, I suppose, there HAD to be some sex thrown in. However, this is a good read even if the characters weren't always believable.

Frames Per Second
Ben Harris is an award winning photojournalist working for the Insider, a respected news journal in Boston. His family life is not in good shape. His ex-wife is about to marry Ben's boss at the Insider, Kurt. Ben hates Kurt because he (Ben) still loves his wife, Andi, and he wants to get closer to his two children who he feels he has neglected for his job. Kurt, on the other hand, wants to erase all trace of Ben from his new family's life.

This is a tough situation in the best of circumstances, but when Ben's reporter and long time work partner, Peter, is blown up while carrying Ben's camera bag, Ben has a situation with a lot of things going on at once. As the family tensions heat up, so does the investigation and Ben finds himself up against a U.S. Senator, a young crime boss and the terrorists. And Peter's ex-wife shows up in Boston working for the Insider and determined to find out what happened to her ex-husband, sparks fly on several levels.

What makes this novel so very good is that the plot derives from the personalities of the characters rather than from the needs of the author. No one is perfect, there are no easy answers in any family situation and the fault lines are what drag the characters into the plot. Eisdon has a real insight into the relationships between fathers and their children, between the home life and the development of character. The writing is crisp, clear and to the point. Even the bad guys are complex and find themselves in situations they ought to have avoided had their personalities allowed them to act more in their own interests. It is the focus on character that sets the novel apart from run of the mill suspense novels.

Set in Boston, there is plenty of local color and the excitement level is high. Do not start reading late at night or you will stay up a lot longer than you intended to. When the novel shifts to Ben's point of view, the reader gets an interesting perspective of the world of the photographer from behind the lens. Buy it, read it and tell your friends.

One of the 10 best intriguing thriller writers in our time
Mr. Eidson is a wonderful writer who should have become so popular as those who are so famous now in the bestsellers' market if he or his publisher(s) knew how to market him. What amazed and moved me this time in this particular book was that he gave us a profound but sad situation that a camera newsie would inevitably face; an estranged/divorced wife and a broken family. The feelings were so deeply conveyed by Eidson that moved me quite a lot. The whole thriller is wonderfully crafted except the unconvincing twist that a NY FBI agent was bought out by a thug. One other thing that I'd like to remind Mr. Eidson of is that to avoid using the name "Tattinger" again and again in his books if he's not writing a series. I have no other complains whatsoever to any of Mr. Eidson's books except holding my breath for his next one.

CCDA written by Dummies
This book is bad, and I don't mean in a good way. The book is missing a lot of details, and if you have any knowledge the mistakes will jump out at you. For example, on page 44 it gives the OSI model (from 1-7) as Physical, Data Link, Transport, Network, Session, Presentation, Application. Then, it says make sure you know the correct order for the test. Why? The authors don't. On another question, the book says you should answer, "I don't know because you haven't taught me, yet." Try answering a question on the CCDA exam, as I don't know it's beyond the scope of the test. Also, the editor must have just used the spell check and not actually read the book. There are a lot of errors like "form" for "from" and "wit" for "with." You can figure out what they are trying to say, but it is annoying and makes you lose your focus on studying. I do not recommend this book.

Made a great addition to my CCDA studies
Aside form some of the flubs mentioned by rob (which were occasionally annoying at most) I found this text to be a solid resource for test preparation. You need all "everything and the kitchen sink" texts (such as the Cisco Press DCN book), and a book like the Dummies book that focuses on the environment and high percentage areas. Bottom line: I got my certification and this book helped me a lot.

Just the right level of detail
No frills, but this was just what I needed for that last minute review before the test. I have plenty of experience, but sometimes it's good to brush up on the technical details, and that's what this book provided with a minimal time investment. Much appreciated, Mr. Gilster and Mr. Dalan!

924 need I say more?
Ok here is the skinny, I did notice the errors in the book, some of the explanations I had to read over and over as well as check online sources ...This is the recommended procedure for doing anything, I feel for those who read books and expect authoritative definitions. Anyways I picked up this book with no knowledge of Cisco Infrastructure----thats right zippo, I work at a Helpdesk position reccomending products including cisco. This book in a month helped me get a 924 on the CCNA exam. In fact I thought the exam was rather simple. The book was easy reading and I never fell asleep once, unlike tood lammelle's books. So this is the answer, if you want CCNA read this book. Has some errors but that shouldn't hinder your progress any. I WILL be purchasing the BCSN by Mr. Myhre.

After 3 books - this was the one.
This beats out any of the books (3) I've read about the subject. This book coupled with ICND from Cisco and some practice with a couple of real routers or simulated should definitely be enough. It was very easy reading - yet informative. Subnetting can be nasty but this guy makes it easy in my opinion. I passed the exam with flying colors as a result. I've lent the book out on three occasions and everyone was happy with it compared to other books out there. I think the secret is that it actually teaches you as opposed to memorizing what may be on the test. I hope this guy writes for advanced exams.
Good luck
Bob/CCNA

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR CCNA 2
This is an EXCELLENT practical book for the CCNA 2 exams.

If there were a LAB EXAM on the CCNA 2 test, this book would be in the same category as that by Andrew Bruce Caslow for the CCIE Lab.

It is the only CCNA book I have come across that TRULY gives you the hands-on experience that you need on the job whilst preparing you for the CCNA exams.

It adopts the same approach recommended by Andrew Bruce Caslow, the author of the best-selling CCIE lab book - "Cisco Certification - Bridges, Routers, and Switchees For CCIE's" (Prentice Hall), through a THOROUGH and SYSTEMATIC APPROACH to configuring and troubleshooting Cisco devices, thereby helping you to understand the practical aspects of what you are learning.

This book would definitely make you feel as though you are in the workplace in view of the many PRACTICAL LAB SCENARIOS introduced in Chapter 5 and gradually built up through to 14. It is also packed full of robust diagrams that help you the learning process.

In my view, this is the BEST CCNA 2 book out there. A SUPERB book for those willing to put their Cisco skills into practice without simply cramming to pass the exams.

Well done Mr Myhre.

very good, but...
beware, that you need to review the material with a mac os x computer infront of you (in fact that is what they advise you to do). but the most important thing, is to try out a lot of stuff yourself. especially when working as a non admin user in os x. this is not all too well covered in the material.
all in all i passed the exam, and the book played a major role in helping. the tech notes at the end of the chapters were a big help too. do not forget to read also another book on os x.

Read, re-read, play on X & Pass
Very good intro book here. Some of the basics were amazingly basic, but after the first few chapters, there was some serious meat to chew into. I commend this highly, especially to those new to the Mac fold (and to us old Mac dogs trying to figure out this *nix stuff).

Best bet is to play with your Mac while reading. Nothing beats hands-on while you are learning. Can't wait for the rest of the Apple Certification stuff to come out.

Great help preparing for the exam!
Just took and passed the exam. Spent about three days reviewing the material in this book, as well as the notes provided by Apple on their web site. I thought that the book did a very good job covering the test material, though could have spent some time discussing network connectivity to windows systems.

All in all, a very good review for the exam. Covered about 90% of what was tested on the exam. Highly recommended for anyone preparing for the test.

Not all that good.
This book is really not good. I'm rather new to MS Administration, and was hoping to not only to prepare for the test 70-210 but also to learn some things. This book starts off very confusing and doesn't teach you anything at all. I only read thru maybe 100 pages and just gave up. Ok, maybe if you have experience and read other books on the subject this material would be somehow useful. But, I purchased Mark Minasi's "Mastering Windows 2000 Server" and don't see any reason for the existence of the PassIt series. If you want to learn something, buy other books. This one might point out things that are on the exam but they will not make you understand or know the material. By reading other books and practicing you have much better opportunities. I got 3 core exams out of the way so far by using Mark's book alone and some playing around.

Perfect Book for Test Preparation
I disagree with the previous reviewer. I have been in the IT field for less than a year and I used this book to prepare to take the exam. This book gave me only what I needed to pass the test. If I wanted to learn how to do each individual task I would have purchased a book to do so. But, the reason I purchased this book was only to pass the test.

For those who want to make sure they are ready.
Windows 2000 Professional is fast becoming the OS of choice and with that Microsoft exam 70-210 seems to be the exam you'll need to master. I have found that books that only deal in the exam objective are helpful but you'll need other material to help fill in the gaps, this book is certainly a help but not as a stand alone choice.

While the author has made sure every exam objective is covered, and filled the book with tips and tricks you still need to have some hands-on labs to aide in the learning process. Each chapter has review question at the end and scattered throughout the chapter is Exam Challenges, which I found to be helpful but again you need some equipment to try them out.

Overall I found the book to be useful; also there is a cd with 2 exams of 75 questions each, 1 for the 70-210 and 1 for the 70-215 exams. I think that since this is a 70-210 book both exams should be for that and I am sure in the next update this can be fixed.

The cd also contain over 500 other questions that can be unlocked for and additional $50.00, again I think this should be included with the book, however this is a minor fix. The unlock code can be purchased online and overall the book does its job.

With this and the Transcenders you too can pass!
I was very skeptical when I first purchased this book. It's got Microsoft's name on the spine, which through past experience has shown to mean insufficent information or even abundance of errors. I was plesantly surprised to find the information not only sufficient, but also well written and mildly entertaining. Now you won't curl up with a cup of coffee and enjoy this book like a novel, but it certainly won't strain you brain with each chapter. As with all Technical Certifications, hands on usage is the best possible way to learn, I recommend installing SQL Server and working through all the examples. The only draw back to this book is the set of example questions, they lack the teeth that the test will truly have. So if you have the cash, go get the Transcenders.

Good Luck!

A great step-by-step to use at work, an asset to pass exam.
I originally bought this book for two reasons. One, to pass an elective exam on my MCSD and second, to utilize on my current consulting job. This book did not let me down at all.

Combining this book with material from Transcenders, I passed the Microsoft exam with room to spare. More importantly though- it allowed me to start developing a data warehousing project on my current assignment.

The book is well written and goes step by step from the fundamentals to advanced DTS. In addition, there is additional exercises in the book that allow you to sharpen your skills with SQL and MDX.

BEWARE- THE CD'S IN THE BOOK ONLY WORK WITH NT 4.0. IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS PROFESSIONAL 2000, YOU MAY KISS OFF TO THE ADDITIONAL DATA AND TRIAL VERSIONS OF SQL SERVER ON THE CD'S THAT ARE PROVIDED. I HAVE MSDE LOADED- SO I COULD USE THE SAMPLES THAT THEY PROVIDED IN THE BOOK AT HOME.

In addition, I feel that Microsoft Press did an excellent job in providing the reader with in depth detail that is mandatory in building a successful data warehouse. Unlike the Oracle Press books that I have used- In my opinion- Microsoft Press goes beyond the surface of memorization of facts and provides the reasoning behind the content of the book that leads to a better level of understanding.

One other complaint-- the spine of the book couldn't keep the pages together under heavy use.

Good Book For Learning And Passing the Exam
This book was a great book. I have had 3 years of experience in data-warehousing, but after reading this book I was able to learn lot of new things. The exam is a tough one. I would recommend reading the entire book and then going through the transcender. By the way I passed the test.
