Very good
I used this book along with Howard Hawhee's Training Guide and got a 928 which surprised me. The distributed exam that I took was quite a bit simpler than the desktop exam. Thomas is a skillful writer and obviously a master VB programmer. He packs a lot of information in a few pages while still maintaining a friendly, human tone. The tests at the end of each chapter and the big practice test at the end of the book are very valuable in preparing for the real thing. Also, don't pass over the preface to the sample test at the end of the book. It gives good test-taking advise although I was not courageous enough to use his technique of quickly reading through each of the questions before answering any of them. Thomas' book has one thing in common with other good (note the adjective) prep books in that they provide a comprehensive reference that is often superior to the reference books themselves. So this book stays on my shelf.

Most concise and to the point reference for exam preparation
I have used exam cram series to prepare for Microsoft exams and found all of them to be the most concise and to the point exam preparation references available. I have passed 8 of the 9 exams that I used these guides for. The ninth I was not properly prepared for, failing by only 1 question, and attempting the exam on too short notice (only 2 days of studying).

These exam cram guides point you most directly at the Microsoft thought process justifying most questions. This book is no different. But you must understand the overall Microsoft thought process for these guides to assist you to be successful. They don't necessarily give you the answers (and they shouldn't anyway), but they do give the correct pointers so that you know what Microsoft is thinking in their exam questions, which is the most important thing anyway.

If you know the subject matter and what Microsoft is thinking in their exam questions, you will pass the exam. This guide is an excellent assistant toward these goals.

Almost Flawless source of test information and study guide!
This book is a must in order to pass the VB6 Distributed exam. (I just took the test today for the first time and passed with a very high score.) It's well written and covers about 70 to 80 % of what's required to pass the certification test. It does have some typos and errors in the sample code but these are covered in the errata section of the Exam Cram Web site.

I would not consider, however, this book to be enough to pass the test unless you have extensive experience in using IIS, MTS and building COM components. The MSDN library is an excellent source of information for those items which only receive light or no coverage in this book. At the end of each chapter, there's a "Need to Know More" section which indicates where to get more extensive explanations and examples of the topics covered in the chapter. I found this to be very valuable in saving me time by not having to research this information on my own.

The test at the end of the book is very similar to the actual test. There's also a test included on a CD when this book is purchased as part of the Exam Cram pack. I bought the 3-book pack myself and believe it's worth buying. I found the exam included on the CD to be helpful plus I have read that the book on the Architectures exam is good too (I haven't read it yet). The book for the MCSD VB 6 Desktop is okay (not great).

In addition to this book and MSDN, I highly recommend taking the Transcender exams. Many of the questions on the test were also similar to the ones on the Transcender CD. And only by taking the Transcender exams, will you know what this book is not covering. Then it's up to you to find this information on your own.

Good luck on the test! I think this exam is easier than the MCSD VB 6 Desktop exam.

A Solid Review Text
Richard Deal does a nice job covering the material required for the Switching exam (640-504). I would, however, recommend that you use at least one other source for your exam preparation, even if you have extensive experience with Cisco switching products. I used the Exam Cram along with the BCMSN (Cisco Press) book by Karen Webb and scored well on the exam.

CCNP: Switching Exam Cram
After taking the BCMSN class, the instructor recommended this book for preparing for the test. He said that everything you need to know is in the BCMSN class materials, but highly recommended the book because of its concise review of the material and the question/answers supplied. Another great thing about this book is its inexpensive price. So I bought the book and wasn't disappointed. The tear-out sheet in the front of the book was my favorite part--it greatly helped me the 30 minutes before my test. Also, I really liked the format of the exam questions in the book--each choice was explained why it was correct or incorrect. I got a 978 on the test, so I have no complaints whatsoever with this book.

Outstanding
This is an outstanding book. It is well written with minimal typos. It reads well, quickly and easily and explains everything in good detail.

Everything on the test is in this book. A must have if you are doing 640-505. My score 960, if you know this book you cannot help but do well too.

Also, see Ricahrd Deal's other book Remote Access Exam Prep for the 640-505 test. I feel the Switching book is a better one but Remote Access is also excellent.

Good Book-It was my main source
This is a good book covering all the A+ material quite well. What i liked was that in the OS technologies section of the book the author gives tips which are very handy because i saw many questions based on these tips. Another thing i liked was the practise software on the CD. There is 3-4 different companies with demo exams on the CD.

I did my actual tests today and i passed well. I got 1067 in the OS section. I used this book as the primary source and used cram sheets and various internet notes. Also the main thing is to do as many prac tests as you can to get a wide range of questioning used.

However this book gets 4 stars because it has some errors. Some you might be able to pick up some you might not. Like this on page 136 "For the exam, serial communications is not capable of full-duplex transmission" Well in fact it is because it contains 9 or 25 pins which have send and receive at the same time capability. All you have to see is a diagram on the inside of a serial cable and you will see my argument.

Anyway regardless it will help you pass if you read cover to cover and do all the practise questions.

Just what the A+ Student needs
I think a lot of A+ students are looking for this kind of book: just what they need to study and know to pass the exams, without all the other background information and additional material.

A+ students just starting with computers really need something that is portable, instantly informative and gives them enough to get them started as a PC tech. This book does just that. Gives them what they need to pass the exams and get started working with computers.

The opening section on Computer Adaptive Testing really sets the standard for the rest of the book. This is critical information that really gives the student an edge in the exam room.

Finally an A+ book that covers Windows NT as thoroughly as the CompTIA exams!

A+ Cramsession Author...

Buy This Book and Pass the Test!
I just passed (January 2003) both A+ exams using this book! Knowing the information in this book will enable you to pass both exams. The nature and scope of the material and review questions are right on target when compared to the actual exam. The author claims that if you correctly answer all test questions and understand the theory behind the questions that you may possibly pass the test. I will say that you WILL pass the test after reading the book two or three times, understanding the theory, and missing no more than one or two questions on the final practice tests.

He arranges the A+ material differently than other authors: by subject rather than by CompTIA objective. Saw one review that said this is a weakness: I had no problem with his approach. This book has up-to-date hints about the test questions that I didn't read in any of the other books. Also, his one-line test tips for Windows 9x, NT, and Windows 2000 were good.

In addition to this book, I would buy one of more of the current A+ references, like Charles J Brooks' A+ Certification Training Guide, Mike Meyers' A+ Certification Exam Guide, or even the or even the Microsoft A+ Certification Training Kit. Even though you could pass both A+ exams with this book and a reference book, I would also buy other adaptive study guides, like Mike Meyers' A+ Certification book in his Passport series because although both book cover the required objectives, each book covers different topics in detail beyond the test requirements.

PS. I tried the several practice tests on the included CD but didn't find them their questions all that difficult or cover anything new.

PPS. Forget the other cram/Q&A lists on the Internet: they are a mixed bag. Lot of their questions seemed copied from the major A+ books. The rest of unique questions are good things to know, but about mostly outdated topics not on the current tests. The quality of my two A+ cram/exam sheets were fair at best: typos, correct answers with incorrect explanations, and incorrect answers with correct explanations. Spend your money on another major A+ book.

Great book, but you need more to pass !
It took me close to just one month to teach myself the core of Windows 2000 Professional with LITTLE knowledge of the proprietary Microsoft OS. I started with basic Windows knowledge, lacking knowledge of Group Policy Objects, NTFS permissions, MMC, RIS, etc. Essentially speaking, I was your typical daily Win9x user.

To my surprise, I managed to score 860 / 1000 on the actual 70-210 exam taken at a Prometric exam center USING THIS BOOK ALONE (even though I had the Windows 2000 Professional MCSE Training Kit book by MS Press). The book has its good and bad points.

Good points
- 300 some odd pages
- Straight and to the point; it'll get you up and operating Win2k instantly
- Easy read (as oppose to the Win2k Pro MCSE TK by MS Press)

Bad points
- Doesn't elaborate with greater details on some of the more important concepts (i.e. RIS, network protocols, Windows registry, printer administrations, etc.)
- Unclear / ambiguous explanation on certain concepts (i.e. Group Policy Objects, software assignment / publishing, etc.)

I had to go back and refer to the MCSE Training Kit on Win2k Professional to review the areas that were -not- covered (or not thouroughly covered) in the Exam Cram.

I recommend this book as a -SUPPLEMENTARY- guide. To get the most out of Windows 2000, I suggest reading the Windows 2000 Professional MCSE Training Kit by Microsoft Press (it's about 600 some odd pages and a boring read); but you will not regret it, especially if you want to learn the ins and outs of Windows 2000 Professional [especially important in the workplace] !

Great book to prepare for the exam!
I read this book in the two weeks prior to taking the 70-210 exam, I am currently taking classes at a local college for the MCSE certification, I have all the Microsoft Official Curriculum books and I can tell you that this book is a lot better than the MOCs.

Not only brings all the MOC material together in a very concise way, but makes it easy to understand and digest.

I have a couple years experience as a Help Desk Support technician and I used Windows 2000 extensively, but I still learned a lot of last minute details on this book.

I highly recommend it to anyone looking to obtain their certification.

Good luck!

A MUST HAVE for preparing for Win2K Pro Exam! Terrific!!
Dan Holme, Todd Logan, Laurie Salmon, and Dan Balter did a wonderful job with this book - incredibly concise guide to prep you for the 70-210 exam. Great explanations of concepts and how they relate to exam objectives. Easy to understand, good reading and sense of humor. Nice job. I'll buy other books from this same team of authors. They rock!

No Surprises Here.....
Just like the majority of the Exam Cram titles, this one doesn't let you down. It's packed full of practice questions that can get you in the right frame of mind to take and pass the i-Net+. Is it the only book I would use to study for the exam? No way! If you can pick-up something like the 'All in One i-Net+ Certification Exam Guide' along with this book, you'll hedge your bets and re-enforce the knowledge that you'll pick up with this little jewel. It's definitely part of the equation in passing the i-Net+.

The only book you need
This is the only book you'll need to pass the i-Net+ exam. If you have absolutely no internet or networking experience, or never even logged many hours on the internet then perhaps you should purchase the i-Net+ exam prep.

I have taken some college courses, and have done some coding so I was familar with the technologies involved. I prefered the exam cram over the exam prep, because it is very compact and to the point. This book has all the information you need to study for and pass the i-Net+ exam by comptia. I passed on my first try with 84%.

I would recommend searching the web for free practice tests to give you an idea of where to focus your studying. The exam in chapter 16 gives you a good idea of how you'll do. If you read this book a few times and do some demo practice tests you will pass. I only gave this book 4 out 5 because it didn't come with a CD with practice tests. Hope this helps. Good luck.

A. Mohammed MCP, A+, Network+, i-Net+

The frantic student's friend!
This book covers the points of the I-net+ exam in a very fast-paced "Look, we already know you know some of this stuff, let's get over it quick and move on" manner!

I'm heading out to take my test in a couple of weeks and I'm fairly confident I'm going to pass! The pretest in the back of the book and the testing at each chapter made me go back and check out the information I needed to brush up on so I can pass the first time I take the exam (and at 190 dollars a pop for the exam... getting it right the first time is important)!

If you don't have the time to sit and read everything there ever was on the internet, pick up this book!

Not the only study material you need
I bought two Solaris study guides - This one and The Solaris Admin. Certification Training Guides by Calkins. With BOTH books, I passed the exams.

The editorial review is quite accurate for this book- it's an EXAM CRAM. I wish the editorial review was there before I bought it. Because I only have a few years of Solaris experience, the information it assumed I knew, I did not know. Lots of technical jargon that I wonder if the author even knew.

Only half of the 506 pgs seem to be actual study material, the rest is info on where to get more information and questions on the chapters. Why not put the questions on CD-ROM and save some trees? (The learnsolaris .com website the author recommended was a good supplement).

I think this book is priced right for the material, but don't use this guide as your only reference before taking the exam. Because I don't have 12 yrs of experience, I like the format of Calkins' Study guides better. They provide more detail and background info to help me learn the topics (and the tests were on CD-ROM!).

More in depth info is need to prepare
I just passed Part I using this book and the Sun SA-237 book that is used during Sun's training. I read the Exam Cram book first, read through it again with the accompaning chapters from the SA-237 book (cover-to-cover twice), read the Exam Cram book for a fourth time, then took the full scale sample test (This process of reading and re-reading took about 1 - 1 1/2 months). In addition to all the book work, I had a SPARCstation to work the commands on. The SA-237 book offers a lot more detail (which I feel is needed if you really want to master and KNOW Solaris). Real world experience or access to a SPARC box is a must to get the commands rooted into your head. After all the preparation, the REAL test is still tricky and I passed it with an 83%. I was even dreaming commands in my sleep two nights before the test. There are a few grammatical errors throughout the book and mistakes to some of the sample test answers, but all in all it's a good concise prep tool of the commands and concepts from the big SA-237 book from Sun. Now onto Part II!

"Must-Have Book"!
Well, I've done a right choice by ordering this book. I have not hundreds of $$ to pass courses, and I work only 9 month with Solaris (everywhere, at work and at home, on servers and on my desktop). Book noticed me on moments that seemed not so important to me and it helped me to keep things in mind. I've got 91/100 in first sample test after first reading (using form from unixcert.net) and 84/100 at real exam. The amount time of preparing to Part I was 2 weeks. But have to notice there are errors like "0.0.0.0 is a current address". So I have next 2 weeks to prepare myself to Part II and it does not seem so hard already. This book is very good mate that teaches how to 'cheat' prometric's test ;-) But the main thing is of course, to live in Solaris closely, not only by need. Best wishes to author!

Excellent Study Tool for MCSE Test
I just took 70-058 for the second time and passed with a 913. For my first try I had trained with a very poor CD Rom training program from another company. I augmented that with this Exam Cram book. I came within one correct answer of passing (775), and the only reason I came that close was this little Exam Cram book, as my CD Rom course didn't nearly prepare me for what I'd see on the actual test. This little book alone, at a fraction of the price of that CD Rom course, nearly helped me to pass that first time. The practice questions at the end of each chapter are excellent. And I would recommend getting the Exam Cram four-pack as it includes a CD with an extra practice test that the book doesn't have, and believe me, these practice tests were very helpful. The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that it has a few errors in it, so be sure to check their web site. It could also use some more info on troubleshooting, which was hit very hard on the test! But, all in all, a great buy and great value and will get you well prepared for this test. Take it from a guy who had very little prior network training. I would guess that anyone with a little bit of network experience, this book, and the Transcender, or CICPrep tests will be able to pass. Plus, I would also advise people to complete all six courses, if you have time, before taking any of the tests as the subjects compliment one another and the repitition will do you good. Anyway, you can bet I'll be using the Exam Cram series for every test I take!

They mean what they say - the first and last book to read.
I found this book to be invaluable. Having some experience in a networking environment already, I did not want to read through a huge thick book. This covered most of what was on the test in a very precise and succint manner.

Use it the way it is intended, to help you past the test. When they say it is the first and last book you need to read to pass this test, don't forget the stuff in between! The method that worked for me was to read this book first, then take practice tests from it and Microsoft's site. Then, anything I had any doubts about or missed a question on, I researched in another thicker book (in my case, one by New Riders). That's how I feel those other books need to be used, more as a resource than teaching material.

I then took more practice tests and scanned through the exam cram book again, and passed with flying colors, without feeling like I 'cheated' and only know enough to pass a test, without the real world knowledge.

Passed Networking Essentials 1st Time! Great Practice Tests
The practice exam questions throughout the book are worth every penny you spend on this book! The Exam Cram is like a Cliff Notes for the test, so I do recomment getting Microsoft's Networking Essentials Self-Paced Training for Supporting Local and Wide Area Networks, as well as Transcenders Netcert exam. With these three combinations, you can't go wrong. In fact, you will pass your first time out. As I said, the Exam Cram is like Cliff Notes, so you will def. want to do other reading. Their glossary is excellent! And they also have a cram sheet in the front of the book! Look over it before taking the exam...it helps!

This isn't bad, but don't use it by itself...
This book did a good job of giving an overview of topics covered on the exam. It's hard to believe that other reviewers could pass this exam on the strength of only this book. The format of the book is a little choppy, but the content is more thorough than any other "cram" type book out there. I think they went a little overboard on the scripting aspects of IIS. It's good for the real world, but the exam won't get so detailed. Buy this book and read it right before the exam is my recommendation.

Good for Last Step Preparation
This book was a good addition to my exam preparation but proved most useful as a last step prior to taking my exam. You definetly need real time with the product, a well structured in depth study guide or CBT and this book to drive home the key points. The author throws in good pointers on taking the exam in general but please do not attempt the exam on this book alone. The flow of material is too choppy to gain an understanding of the components. Use it to review specific topics and browse the Things To Know pages at the end of each chapter before you sit down at the Test.

One of the best fast track series
It is also a good book for revision before taking the exam.It contains enough materials for you to pass the exam. If you have hand-on experience of working on IIS, I think you can simply buy this book for your preparation. In its content, there are many figures to illustrate the steps, so that it can help you to deal with those simulation questions.

Good -- but not great
This book is an easy read, and it covers most of what is on the exam. The chapters are nice and short -- a good read for the morning bus ride into work, and the quizzes at the end of each chapter are excellent, with good explanations for the answers. Many of the quiz questions were on my exam (which I passed on the first try). There are plenty of errors in the book, especially in the test at the end. The tear-out "cheat sheet" in the front cover is useless. It is not even good for reviewing concepts you already know. I will probably never touch this book again, now that I have passed the exam, because it is a terrible reference book.

The book accomplishes it's stated goal -- to help you pass the NT Workstation exam with the least amount of pain and suffering.

Great test prep, but be careful

I rated the exam cram for NT Server very high. I cannot, in good faith, do the same here. While this is still a great book for test preparation, there are far too many typos and outright errors to give this a better rating.

Most of the errors are not significant enough to confuse anyone with NT experience (which is highly recommended for MCSE certification anyway). For example, anyone who has gone through the installation documentation will know that there is no /OS option for WINNT (it is /OX) despite it's inclusion in chapter 3.

Overall, these types of typos/errors are more an annoyance than a showstopper, but they should be mentioned. There are a few that could confuse those who are not familiar with NT, but not enough to bring about a failing score on the MCSE exam. If you are diligent, this book will get you a passing score. My advice: get the exam cram pack so you can take the practice exams. I found at least as valuable as the books.

Great review companion for a more in-depth study book
Despite a few errors and being a little thin in a couple of subject areas (most notably Domain-related issues), I found this book to be a terrific review companion to some of the larger, more comprehensive guides to WS4 (such as New Riders, Alan Carter, etc.)

I read this book after covering Coriolis's larger Exam "PREP" book (which I can't recommend) a few days before my test. This book & its sample tests covered much material NOT found in the PREP book. This book, combined with the Transcenders, gave me the ability to score 933.

I have read many reviews that complain about the 11+ pages of errata that Coriolis has provided at its website for the various editions of this book, but I think they are overreacting. What many of these reviewers miss is the fact that most of these corrections have already been assimilated into the newer editions of the book. If your book's publishing date is 1999 or later, you have little to worry about. As Coriolis says, "This page was created so that even those with the earliest printings of each title can have access to the most current updates."

This being said, there are still a few lingering errors, and I even found one case where a question in the 1st sample test directly contradicted a virtually identical, but reworded, question in the 2nd sample test. I forwarded my findings to the publishers & was surprised when Ed Tittle personally replied within one day. They may not have wiped out every single error, but at least they're staying on top of things.

Overall, this is an exceptional review book & a darned good value for the money.

Win95 Certification in 2 weeks is possible!
Very very good book. It was easy reading. I was looking for materials to help me with my Win95 certification. I've already amassed quite a few books on the subject, but they all put me to sleep. This book not only explained all the little nuances, every detail of information that you need to pass the Win95 exam in plain, down to earth English, but it also kept up my interest -unlike a few technical books I have accumulated. I retained all the information presented. I found that all the information I needed to pass and become an MCP was this book. In fact, not only did I pass the exam with flying colors within a 2 week time frame, but so did a few of my colleagues who read the book. This book recieved a rating of "8" due to the fact that I did notice minor proofreading errors on a few pages. The errors were not too significant, but nevertheless...

Excellent one-volume study guide
I just passed WIN95 70-64 with an 877 using this as my main study guide. This book focuses on essentials, without providing tons of extraneous facts that won't be on the exam. I highly recommend that anyone prep-ing for an exam do as many scenario questions as he/she can find. He/she will also need to know a lot more about NT Server, WINS and DNS than expected--about 1/3 of my questions were on those issues. This book doesn't cover trust relationships or emphasize NT Domain stuff quite enough for 5 stars, but it is better than the Que "Exam Series" Guide that is my other prep. guide. I will be purchasing the other Marcus Burton books in this series.

Excellent, Oustanding for exam preparation
Mr. Marcus Barton is nothing short of genius. His knowledge of computers is quite evident but more importantly, in his book titled "Teach yourself Windows' 95 in 14 days" he walks the reader through the Windows' 95 operating system a concise, logical and simplistic manner. In preparation for the Microsoft Certification exam, Mr. Barton does an excellent job in not only covering the material for the exam but the reader really develops an understanding of the process behind the operating system. With this understanding comes confidence and enthusiasm. Can you really read this book and pass the certification exam? Yes, you can. I did! A must for all those who really wish to enter the hierarchy of being a Microsoft Certified Professional in a delightful, painless manner.
