Leadership at its finest
Regardless of whether you are a great leader or are working to achieve successful leadership, this book provides great devotions. If you are searching for something on motivation then you look under the subject heading of motivation and see what stories are available. Each story is motivating, inspiring, and has modern day settings.

The stories are from some of the great leaders of today as well as some from the not so distant past. The devotions will assist any leader in determining a solution for an issue. Leadership Devotions are accompanied by scriptural references so you do not just read what someone else has said or done, but what God says about the same topic.

A great addition for any leader's library, "Leadership Devotions", should be on the shelf of all leaders. It doesn't matter whether you are a leader of many, few, or one, this book will stimulate you to become a great leader.

What criticism ought to be
David Punter's historical approach to Gothic literature reads like the finest page-turner of the genre he studies. For fans of horror and Gothic, this book will show them exactly how and why it is that they keep coming back to books like Frankenstein and Dracula. In addition, it might introduce them to new writers they've not yet read. An excellent work of criticism.

A thoughtful and searching biography
Collaboratively researched and written by the husband and wife team of Michael Squires (Professor of English, Virginia Tech) and Lynn K. Talbot Professor of Spanish, Roanoke College), Living At The Edge: A Biography Of D. H. Lawrence & Frieda Von Richthofen is a thoughtful and searching biography of one of literature's most famous married couples. The vital relationship between D.H. Lawrence and Frieda von Richthofen, (and Frieda's influence Lawrence's writing), are revealed and documented in this exhaustive, scholarly history of both their lives, which is drawn from a wide variety of sources including Frieda's own letters. An excellent reference especially meant to complement literary collections of Lawrence's work, Living At The Edge is highly recommended reading for students of D.H. Lawrence and a superbly presented addition to academic reference collections.

A scholarly examination of railroad folksongs in America.
While humming "The Wabash Cannonball," which remains a popular tune even today, have you ever wondered about the phrase "She's the wondrous combination called the Wabash Cannonball"? What in the world does "combination" mean? Apparently, it means nothing more than that someone (who may have been more familiar with songs than with railroads) misunderstood the meaning of the original words and wrote down the wrong word! Does it help to know that a very early version of the song went "She's the bo's [hobos'] accommodation called the Wabash Cannonball"? The train "accommodated" hobos by providing free, albeit unauthorized, transportation and at least temporary shelter from the elements. The song also derives from an even earlier one called "The Great Rock Island Route," has a number of mythical elements in the style of the Paul Bunyan legends, and speaks of "Daddy Claxton," who has yet to be identified with any historical character and who appears in other versions as Boston Blackey and even Long Slim Perkins!

The evolution of folksongs and their many variants is a fascinating study. Add to this the lure of the railroad, put it all together in a study of dozens of such songs, mix in a healthy dose of scholarly research, and we have Cohen's book. It is not a casual read, but it is invaluable for research into practically every American folksong involving railroads.

For everyone interested in the human aspects of railroad history, in railroad folklore, or in the evolution of the American folksong, this book is well worth the purchase price. That it is back in print and again readily available is a godsend to folklorists, musicologists, and railfans. If you missed the first printing, don't miss this one! Also, while you're browsing here, check out Katie Letcher Lyle's "Scalded to Death by the Steam," a highly readable examination of Appalachian songs inspired by disasters on the railroad.

South African classic
One is transported into the world of children growing up in the apartheid times. The book is so poignant because the author accesses the child's emotions and observations of extreme circumstances, but the child of course is nonjudgemental. Case combines exquisite sensitivity with a total lack of sentimentality as she describes the actualities of apartheid South Africa.

An excellent guide to Lawrence's short fiction.
This guide is designed for those who would be knowledgeable readers of major short stories by D.H. Lawrence when the store of scholarship, investigation, and appraisal is far too vast for all but the expert. A thorough examination of what has been written about these short stories, each chapter deals with a different short story and consists of five distinct sections: (1)the complete publication history, including all revisions and variants; (2)an inclusive examination of recognized and hitherto unrecognized sources, as well as the influences at work on Lawrence in the creation ot the story; (3)the story's relationship to Lawrence's other writings; (4)acknowledgement and summary of all extant critical studies; and (5)a bibliography of works cited.

Taking Necessary Steps
Ewan's story is more than just about coming out. It is about finding a place to fit in which one is comfortable. In this, it goes beyond the typical story of accepting oneself. The hardest part of growing up gay is thinking that there is nobody else in the world like you. For a young man in such a situation it is easy to give into the temptation of giving gratification to a straight friend and become trapped in a loveless relationship, or worse yet be used by older men. Ewan gives into the temptation of both. And, he is disappointed by both. His friend, Leslie, starts seeing women and the older man, Paul, confesses to having a boyfriend in London. The result is that Ewan ends up alone. This could have started Ewan on a cycle of discovery and disappointment, except for the fact that his parents discover his diary and read it. Fortunately for Ewan, they are agreeable to his taking up residence in London, albeit strictly supervised. This does give him a

chance to reach out to the gay community, which is a lot easier said than done. Gradually, and fearfully, he begins to learn to stand up for himself and for others. It is more this than anything else that puts in a position to find the love he seeks. His journey, far from being exceptional, provides the reader with the potential of hope. It is a book full of possibilities.
