A "breakthrough study" of childhood in English literature
To describe Sklenicka's book, I am going to quote from a review of it by the late Mark Spilka, who was one of the finest critics of the novel in the late 20th century: "The whole unsettled question of Lawrence's relation to children, and of his literary uses of his own childhhod experiences, is taken up handsomely by Carol Sklenicka in her breakthrough study . . . .[She] has given us the first important study of the thematic value of those years for he fictional treatment of children, and for his lifelong fascination with childhood."

Anyone who thinks of Lawrence as a now-obsolete proponent of free sexual expression should take a look at this readable scholarly study. Sklenicka shows that Lawrence had real insight into the nature of children and parenthood. Especially interesting is her idea that Lawrence (in 1920!) was a proponent of greater involvement by fathers in the raising of their children.

D.H. Lawrence and his diaries
Among the books that so far have appaeared this is a ilustrated biography by Keith Sagar, already known as editor of Lawrence selected poems. It was in it s last print a glossy, large and lavishly illustrated book that could have been easily dismiss as another 'coffee table' volume; but the book is in fact much more than that. The biography takes us to meet intelectuals and aristocrats, writers and artist, pesants and peons, bohemians and bankers as Lawrence travels from London and Cornwall, Germany and Italy, New Mexico, Ceylon and Australia. But although we are taken on a usual conducted biographical tour we are not taken in a usual way. What mr Sagar has done is novel and get us nearer to Lawrence the human. He has told this life by means of stracts, mainly from Lawrence's writings specially from letters and diaries.

There is alot that is of interest and quite instructing such as his strong emotional dependence to Frida while at the same time attempting to from a spiritual community... his Ramanim who he needed to believe was possible to form if he was to retain any faith in humanity and the human future. A good book but in the end a sad story he gives, of one man who's writings are now part of the English lemguage heritage, writings, that will remain read perhaps for centuries to come.

Darkness Moves: An Henri Michaux Anthology, 1927-1984

Indispensible translation of a modern master
Even if you speak French, this book is an indispensible source on the great, 20th. century poet Henri Michaux. One of the important things that David Ball establishes is the chronology of Michaux's publishings. Michaux often published a string of small books between major collections - the major books overlapping, partially containing and redacting the earlier books in a highly complex and confusing way. In some cases, the larger work even duplicates the title of a smaller work. Ball untangles this gnarly time-line once and for all.

This is the most extensive selection in English from all phases of Michaux's long poetic career. It includes excerpts from his prose works - the travel writings and the mescalin writings, although nothing was taken from A Barbarian in Asia and Miserable Miracle. There are some plates that provide a view of Michaux's often superb graphic art.

The translations stand up pretty well against Richard Ellman's in Selected Writings (also highly recommended); however, this is a much larger work. Ball is perhaps on the literal side as a translator, a respectable choice. Probably, the only way to translate a poet impeccably, is to have a team of accomplished poets working in direct collaboration with the living poet who also speaks the second language well. And, of course, that's not the case, here. As far as I know, among major 20th. century poets translated into English, only Jorge Luis Borges was tranlated in this arcadian manner. That said, there's nothing wrong with these translations, except that David Ball, though possessed of a good ear, is not himself a poet, or trying to use a translation of a poem as an occasion to write another poem. Again, this is a respectable choice. In a sense Michaux is easy to translate. His language, though highly individual, is clear and direct (except when he's creating his bombastic new words). It's this language and conscience (John Ashberry's critical insight) in service in service to a deep and powerful visionary faculty, that makes Michaux one of the truly great poets of the 20th. century.

Everything in it is orthodox, so no worries there. And it includes so much about our faith! Stories about Christ, references to scripture, the lives of saints and lining Catholics, all of whose stories are fascinating and inspiring to young Catholics, how people sruggle with and live out their faith, everything! Amazing Book, Within interesting Connections to Robert Blake
I was amazed at how Bromwitch drew all these great connections to the work of Romantic Poet and Baretta star, Robert Blake. I had no idea that the plot to do away with fellow poet Bonnie Lee Blakey was actually inscribed in Tintern Abbey. This is Bromwitch's great insight, and boy, did I lose a lot of sleep over it. I am also impressed with the claim that all of Wordsworth's poetry grew out of his own obsession with the female reproductive system, particularly that of his sister, Dorothea. After reading this book I quickly decided to disown the book, and lent it on purpose to a friend with Alzheimer's, so he would not remember from whence it came. So, I say, thank god for disowning memory!

Yes, the English Renaissance CAN be humorous!
Christopher Marlowe is a genius. This thorough, Oxfordiancompilation of his best known plays contains Tamburlaine the Great parts one and two, the Tragical History of Doctor Faustus in its original A-text and its later B-text, The Jew of Malta, and Edward II. The beauty of these dramas lies in the fact that they're short but powerful reading pieces. In five acts Marlowe was able to generate a story complete with action, classical allusions, and a bawdy humor one might not expect from otherwise generally classified stuffy English Renaissance drama. This book contains an exhaustive introduction that explains many details of the publication dates of the plays and the differences between versions (Faustus). It also contains a thorough section for notes that further explain the texts. Finally, it contains a glossary of the commonly used words from the texts. The bottom line? This book is a great read--it's funny (I can't begin to stress that enough), and you will appreciate Marlowe's wit and talent just as much as William Shakespeare did. Buy it today!

Excellent criticism of two major writers
Loralee MacPike does an excellent job of exploring the role Dickens's novels played in Dostoevsky's works. Focusing on Dickens's The Old Curiosity Shop and David Copperfield, she shows their impact on two of Dostoevsky's novels: The Insulted and Injured and The Possessed. This is a brilliant analysis, and a fine critical work that made me appreciate both writers even more than I already had.
