What does stylistics studies?
First thing in order to get good profit of this book is to be aware of the date of its first publication (around 60's). Since then much have been discussed about both Stylistics and Linguistics but by that time the authors pointed out a few good important elements do discuss the uses of language with a scientific approach. If you don't have a background on the Stylistics studies, remember that this book brings a very specific view of what stylistics is and which aspects stylistics should focus on.

According to the authors Stylistics is the branch of linguistics that studies aspects of language variations. Considering that for each social situation one uses a different kind of language skills, Stylistics should study and analyse these variations according to social backgrounds and cultural contexts. Stylistics would focus on some of the same language aspects of nowadays Social Linguistics but looking for what Charles Bally called the expressive face of language.

The book is full of good analysis of uses of English and can be very interesting for the ones who desire to discover this language. Crystal and Davy don't offer any example of literary text as they believe that literature deserves a more carefull aprroach. Before the task of analysing this kind of text, Stylistics would have to grow on tradition as a Discipline so that people would be prepared to face the challenge of describing literary style. Regarding on this matter and considering the importance of training stylists, they offer a method to text analysis.

Kneel before the Lord of Fantasy!
Interesting, very intersting. If you have ever wondered what made J.R.R. Tolkien write his epic master piece, or are curious about what he was like growing up, this book is a must fo you. Of course being a biography it can be a bit dull at times, but so what that how life is boy! This book afirmed that the respect and admiration I have for J.R.R. Tolkein was not just me blowing his importance out of proportion, for he truly always has, and always will be, a master of fantasy!

Jacques Dupin Selected Poems
Published in Paperback by Wake Forest University Press (1992)
Authors: Jacques Dupin, Germaine Bree, and David Shapiro
Amazon base price: $11.95
Used price: $6.35
Average review score:

bloody sublime
Dupin's poetry brings together fear and desire, death and life, oppositions which fuse together not out of juxtaposition but out of a bleeding neccesity for eachother. Death and life do not contrast in dupin, they are one. Opposing themselves within themselves, self rending and fusing simulataneously. Parageneous and sublime.

Beautiful, glorious
Clare is a true poet, and strangely neglected currently it seems. Really he is one of the essential poets of the wonderful romantic era which includes Wordsworth, Shelley, Blake, Coleridge, and Keats. Why is this just about the only book of his work being published? I think you're lucky to find this one, and you can find many poems of his on the web to see yourself. Cheers

review John Osborne Plays Three : Luther, a Patriot for Me,
Luther and A Patriot for Me are excellent plays. The passion, drama and elements of surprise and the succint turning points testify to Osborne's talent. Even better than his landmark Look Back in Anger.

Playwriting at its best.

Semi-abstract yet powerful and emotional color paintings
The Joy I Seek is a boldly and empathetically illustrated presentation of fragments from the classic poem "Endymion: A Poetic Romance," by John Keats. Forty-four semi-abstract yet powerful and emotional color paintings by David Finn present and unforgettable representation of the poem's core themes of love between a man and a woman, the joy of human sexuality, and the bittersweet fleetness of life itself. A heartfelt and soulful presentation that wraps love, sex, and death into an explosion of literary and visual high art. Book I 777-781: Wherein lies happiness? In that which becks/Our ready minds to fellowship divine,/A fellowship with essence, full of shine/Full alchemized, and free of space. Behold/The clear religion of heaven!

Another small masterpiece from David Hare!
I have read quite a few books about Oscar Wilde, both biographical and fictional. But, I must say that "Judas Kiss", written by a very talented David Hare, seems to be the best among the plays. The minute I started reading this book, I felt better about not having a chance to see the play on Broadway, with an incredible Liam Neeson as late Oscar Wilde. Hare's playwriting ability is so powerful, that I was able to re-create theater stage, the story happening on it, and even Liam Neeson himself. In terms of its narrrative, "Judas Kiss" takes somewhat non-traditional look at the last few months of Oscar Wilde's life in Italy. It is well-documented that prison changed him greatly in spirit and in body, and that he came out physically and spiritually weaker than ever. But, wait and see what Hare has to say about this as well as about Bosie's presence in Wilde's life after prison, among other things.

A Strange and Profound Gnosis
Excellent book! This is some of the best poetry you'll find anywhere, and its publication is a reason to rejoice! CAS excelled at a very dark and beautiful poetry and some of his best pieces are in here. It has some unreprinted material, as well as some poems that have seen very little light in the past. Great production values and three nice, full color paintings. I highly reommend it!

Shakespeare's Romantic Fairy Tales
This edition includes Pericles, a prince who solves a riddle given by a king and is pursued because he discovers a terrible secret; Cymbeline, a story about Rome battling England with the memorable heroine, Imogen, and her jealous husband Posthumous. Happy Ending, but Imogen deserves better; Winter's Tale tells the story of incredibly Jealous husband Leontes and his suffering wife/heroine Hermione. A fairy tale to be told on a Winter's Eve; Tempest, a story of an exiled Magician who lives on an island with a fairy, Ariel, his daughter, Miranda, and a beast called Caliban.

All these stories are entertaining fairy tales with romantic themes. Highly recommended.
