Stig of the Dump
In England, it was required of us to read Stig of the Dump at school. I am very glad of this because if it had not been required reading, I may not have had the pleasure of reading such a great story. Being a girl I always wanted to read typical girl books, and this book(at least from the title) would seem more for boys, but let me assure you it is a wonderful book for children of all ages. I am now reading it to my 6 year old daughter and she is loving it.

A teacher's view of this children's classic
I first read this book as a seven year old in 1960. Through 20 years of teaching primary age pupils (7-11 years of age) I have read this to my class every year. It never fails to please. Easily split up into 'bedtime' or 'classtime' chunks, Stig, and his friend Barney will hold reader, and 'read-to' spellbound. Although English in style, it is translatable into other cultures easily...and the last chapter is truly magical. I give it 10 out of 10.!!

Couldn't put it down!
My 9 year old son is a good reader but doesn't usually choose books over sport. However, he loved Stig of the Dump and spent every possible minute reading. He finished it in a week. It's a classic from my childhood and I've now re-read it. We both recommend it to your children.

Life With a Berner
This is an easy read with loads of information. It is a must for anyone considering a BMD as it really focuses on life with a berner. This book should be read before and after getting a Bernese. The training section is very helpful as well.

A Great Book
I am getting a Bernese and am constantly searching for more information on the breed. This book has lots of great pictures and is easy to read. It is good for anyone who wants to learn more about the breed. There is a section on training in addition to the sections about the breed and living with the dog. A must if you are thinking about getting a Bernese.

The most confident/loyal dog ever
Crawford's book offers an extremely detailed analysis of the aspects concerning life with a Bernese Mountain Dog. I am currently in the process of searching for the right BMD for myself and found this book to be helpful and rewarding in my decision to get a BMD

Many blessings in a convenient little package!
I love this little book. On the outside, it's well made, sturdy, extended flaps on either side to use as bookmarkers....but that must be because they knew it would get a lot of use!

Inside each page is devoted to a specific blessing, at the top of the page there is a quote relevant to the topic, the blessing and then a brief essay/prayer. Each one is lovely.

Here are some examples of the topics: "The Seasons of my Heart have Purpose and Meaning", "This Earth is Radiant with Grace", "My Strength is a Fortress". But the words that follow are the real gems. Ms. Cameron writes with sensitivity and grace, in a way that seems to speak to the heart, no matter what your religous belief. I've found this book very valuable in my morning devotions.

Beautiful reflections for all faiths
I don't know what the author's religion is, but I suspect she is not Jewish. Nonetheless, this book was given to me by a Rabbi because the sentiments are universal. I have been through a couple of very emotional experiences recently and through these experiences, I have sought to become closer to God. The journey is often difficult and the relections and experiences of others make this journey a little less uncharted. I find the sentiments in this book to be moving and I recommend that you seek out those reflections which are most meaningful to you and to spend time truly concentrating on them.

I immediately began to read the book before I left the store
The book is relevent to anyone's life. You can find an entry that speaks the words that your heart is saying at this time or needs to say in the future. It was also useful for me in a conversation I had before I was even out of the store and had paid for it. I look forward to reading it again and using it with my college students in my job as Campus Minister.

Breakfast Time is absolutely delightful
I stumbled upon this book at the library while looking for books for my then barely one year old child. We loved it so much we bought both this and "Bath Day" by the same author.

The rhythm and pentameter seem to be geared to get a smile out of toddlers. My now 23 month old child will sing in this rhythm while bringing the books to me to read. My husband seems to thing that Ms Noonan must have been present at our breakfast table because the baby in the book's behavior is so similar to our own child's. (I make cornflakes fall like snow....)

I must add that this book seems to make our child even more determined to feed her OWN breakfast to the dog, but she enjoys it so much, we are happy to have her do it.

I adore the illustrations, which are what drew me to the book, out of thousands, at the library that day. I truely thought that the book was 50 or 60 years old until I saw the copyright. It also helps that the child strongly resembles out youngest child and she seems to think the books are specifically about her. The soft water color and joyful baby and dog will delight any child and all parents.

Puppy and me, fun to read!
I enjoy reading this book with my two year old. He loves puppies and seems to enjoy the way both the puppy and he are the stars of the book. We read Goodnight Moon before bed and save the Puppy and Me books,"Going to the corner" and "Bath Day" for daytime reading. I am buying "Breakfast Time" for my friend at work with a little girl age 18 mos. She told me she misses having breakfast during the week with her daughter and will read it to her on weekends after breakfast as kind of a celebration. The child in the book looks like a boy or girl, any child can feel the book is about themselves and Puppy!

Author
All three books in the Puppy and Me series are delightful, ( If I do say so myself.) The text has a perfect rhythm, and the pictures capture the fun todlers have just being themselves. No big message here, just books where toddlers can recognize their own little world. Have you ever gotten stuck reading a book you hate that your kid wants read over and over and over? I have. The "Puppy and Me" books read well each time, and are SHORT for limited attention spans. When I read to kids, I actually sing BREAKFAST TIME and put hand motions with it. Works well for "getting the sillies out". Although GOING TO THE CORNER ( third in the series) was printed too light, the book is still excellent. I'd appreciate you spreading the word if you enjoy the series. My personal favorite? BATH DAY, ( a perfect summer book). I welcome your comments at JUNOART@aol. Thanks! Julia

Insights Into House Churches
I read this book along with Frank Viola's book "Rethinking The Wineskins" and I found this book to be a bit more easier to follow and more practical. While Viola's book seem to have an heir about it that said "I'm ticked off at the established church and here is why" this book simply offers the reader a candid look at the New Testament model of house churches and how the Bank's are seeking to follow the NT pattern. Bank's is a scholar. You will find in this book a man who loves God, loves people, and teaches the truth of Scripture clearly. If you have read books on house churches and have walked away with a bit of skepticism (as I have at times) than buy this book and you will find that Bank's is truly a brother in Christ who only desires to be like Jesus.

Critical questions about the nature of the church
A practical survey of the house church movement. Without bitterness toward traditional models of church, Banks introduces a refreshing model for the household of faith which has its roots in the first century. It is a radical concept for many American Christians because it stands in such stark contrast with the more individualistic, consumer driven model for church which has taken center stage in Western Culture.

Great Basic Information About House Church
Robert and Julia shared from experience when they wrote this book. It is so refreshing to read a book that is about real life, rather than just the theory and doctrine of how house church ought to be. The various testimonies are really insightful.

If you are contemplating leaving the institutionalized church, this book would be a good place to start your journey toward relational fellowship in the home setting.

Must buy culinary students
I'm a culinary student and found this book very helpful for converting units into metric units. It helped me with my baking class because it showed how to convert measurements properly and with great accuracy. I also used the following to study for the National Servsafe Test which is also on amazon.com:
Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (ISBN: 0971999678). It showed me the type of questions asked on the exam. In addition, was quite helpful for my sanitation class. Get both books if you're in culinary school.

Great for pros and home chefs
This book clears up the math questions for all levels of preparing foods. From the diference in dry measure to liquid measure to getting the quantities right for the number of guests you are feeding. Bravo!!

Finally...
This is what I've been waiting for. For those of us who aren't too good with numbers and measurements (foodservice math), this is a god-send. It's got great information and it makes the whole subject of "culinary math" reasonable and understandable.

Discourses on Livy (Oxford World's Classics)
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1901)
Authors: Niccolo Machiavelli, Julia Conaway Bondanella, and Peter Bondanella
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

Another Machiavelli. Different from the often known one.
No one who wants to have a fair outlook of the whole political reflexions of Machiavelli, might get it without reading "Discourses.." (Discorsi...). There the reader will find another kind of Machiavelli. Not The Prince's, but another thinker. Deeper and broader, the main topic rather than how to get the power (as along The Prince), is now how to stabilize it. Livy's work is just a motive for Machiavelli's analizes. So, the frequent reference to ancient Greek or Roman history, serves as comparative model regarding the actual Italian and the lager European exuberant political universe. Instead the prince needed to unify Italy and set it free from foreing powers, the central figure is a republic capable to keep liberty alive and a "virtuosa" social life, in terms of participation in the power exercise. Most of the conclusions keep still today a wise validity. That's why after "Discourses..." (albeit it seems The Prince was written in the middle of the former's one composition years) one can talk rightly about a "republican" Machiavelli. If he was not father, at least he was uncle (a bright one) of the since many years called "protective republicanism". In few words: the book put in evidence his very scope and stature. Doubtless, "Discourses..." show us another kind of Machiavelli. Different from the often known one. But still more, different than the ignored one (although ignorance never has been and impediment for many people to speak improperly about "Machiavelli", "machiavellism" and "machiavellic".)

A passionate testament to a highly held ideal!
The Romans believed that they had reached the pinnacle of development & the success of their Empire at its height certainly testified to that view. However, Machiavelli points out the strengths & weaknesses of their Political, Moral & Philosophical stance, stating where these pillars of their society shifted & how they contributed to its demise.

A Wonderful Translation of a Classic
A careful translation, in modern English, of the Italian classic by Machiavelli. The translation strives for both accuracy and clarity, and the result is a modern English translation that never stoops to colloquial abstraction. The short introductory essay provides a helpful start for exploration of a complex work. The index of proper names, and the glossary (providing the translated Italian word beside the English) is thorough and very useful. In addition, the print quality of this book is delightful, particularly the visually appealing layout and typesetting, which makes the volume a pleasure to read, and a wonderful change from the paucity of visual design that goes into many versions of classics. This is a quality edition you'll want to add to your library, in either the hardcover or paperback versions. Recommended for anyone who would like to broaden their understanding of Machiavelli beyond The Prince.

I'm not crazy afterall !!
At 47 years old I thought I was ready for the looney bin! Then I ran across this book and what relief I felt. After reading the first few pages of this book I realized I wasn't crazy I was just on an emotional roller coaster called severe PMS. Ms. Lush has given me insight into what I can do about my PMS. Thanks Ms. Lush, Your new friend from Florida!

Very insightful!
What an incredible book! I was able to understand more about my emotional ups and downs and the changes in a woman's body that can cause them. My husband also read the book and gained a new understanding of women. He recommends it to friends more than I do.

This book will change your life.

Full of memories
Julia Dawson's tales of her family growing up in Indiana is a fascinating read. Her vivid details of the lives and times lets you smell the aroma of fresh bread baking on the old kitchen range, feel the warmth of the cloths hung by the oven door on chilly morning and hear the squeaks and groans of the old organ as the children play their self-composed melodies. Julia interweaves her family's history with the national and world events of the time to keep the story in perspective. The book is guaranteed to revive some of your own personal memories of the past.

With a Little Help From the Soybean
Published in Spiral-bound by Julia Elliott (1997)
Author: Julia Elliott
Amazon base price: $18.00
Average review score:

This is a user-friendly cookbook.
I bought this book after attending a tofu workshop that Julian taught. She uses soybeans in her daily diet and is so sold on the health benefits that she even grows her own. I like the fact that this recipe book lists the health benefits that are derived from cooking with soybeans. It also tells you step by step how to prepare soybeans for cooking. That's a big help to me. There are some very good recipes. My favorite is the Squash Casserole. This dish has so many good ingredients, including the soybeans. I'm slowly learning to incorporate these wonder beans in my daily diet.

One week availability
I just noticed the availability listing of this book and wanted to correct it.

Time involved to order this book is usually one week.

The availability has been speeded up due to updated shipping procedures.

Natural Help to Health
I wanted to comment on this book because I have lived it.

I went through an ordeal with the medications doctors gave me to help protect me during menopause.

I did not like the side effects, so together with my new doctor, I explored the world of soy for this purpose.

The results were perfect. Just what my body needed.

That is why I wrote the book, "With a Little Help From The Soybean."

But, because it is so simple, some may not think it effective, but it is just the opposite.

There are no hidden costs, no continuous payment schedules, just buy your soybeans right out of the bin at the health food store, or grow your own, it is easy. If you can grown green beans, you can grow soybeans.

Together with a diet that includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, daily exercise and lots of water, it can help the menopausal woman ward off the effects of waning estrogen.

Because soy has the ability to only give you additional estrogen through its natural sources, it does not allow the body to turn it into estrogen unless you are lacking it.

That is the beauty of it.

If I have enough natural estrogen floating through my system already, it does not allow the system to turn it into more estrogen. But, if you are lacking estrogen, it will help supplement it.

I think this is why the Asians have such sucess with keeping their menopausal and post meno pausal women free of the menopausal effects.

I have done this for over eight years, and have compiled a book that will help incorporate soy into the everyday meal plans.

No special food to buy, just the soybean, in its purest form.

It is simple and cost effective.

I think that is why a lot of women question it, because it does not cost an arm and a leg, and can be grown in your own back yard.

Sometimes the best things in life are almost free.

Buy the book and make the crossover to healthier you without a major investment.
