A very good edition
This edition of Hamlet is ideal fo 16-18 year olds. The study program is excellent - it doesn't try to make the students accept a single view of the play, but offers them a range of interpretations of this very open text.

Epic Fun
Julia Older's epic poem is a tale of duality that ranges from exuberance to rage, with a rousing story, vivid images, and exciting rhythms. It is also very funny, even giving us a parody of a poetry review as well as wry and witty observations and laugh-out-loud punch lines:

Hermione: The lilac grants the inch worm/asylum in its leaves./The thorny rose invites the peaceful/pollinating bees./Were we wiser than we are/we would live as these.

1st Attendant: Don't listen! She's just another blathering poet.

Julia Older is a writer of many talents. In addition to her poetry, I much enjoyed her novel based on the life of poet Celia Thaxter, THE ISLAND QUEEN.

Historical Dictionary of Kierkegaard's Philosophy

A Kierkegaard Baedeker
There are few people in the world today who know Kierkegaard's world like Profesor Julia Watkin. Her command of Danish language and culture are nonpareil. Whether it be Grib Forest or the Great Day of Prayer, Watkin tracks down every reference in Kierkegaard. Watkin illuminates the views of major and minor figures who figure in Kierkegaard's writings. For instance, Bishop Mynster, held much sway with Kierkegaard but readers who first come to the Dane know little about him. With Watkin's book, Kierkegaard's readers will have an introduction to Mynster and to other otherwise forgotten influences on Kierkegaard. Once again, Kierkegaard writes a great deal on love and yet readers unaquainted with Danish will not necessarily understand that Kierkegaard is working with two different Danish terms. But With Watkin's Baedeker, first semester students of Kierkegaard are well informed about the connotations of the Danish. Kierkegaard wrote many of his works under pseudonyms. And there is today a great deal of debate as to how we are to interpret his psuedonymous works.Watkin provides us with a handy register of Kierkegaard's noms de plum. Watkin, who for many years helped steer the Kierkegaard Library, has also appended a comprehensive bibliography. Anyone intent upon entering the world of Kierkegaard's thought, should not leave home without Julia Watkin's HISTORICAL DICTIONARY OF KIERKEGAARD'S PHILOSOPHY.

my kids love this book!
My three- and five-year old children love this book. I found my three- year old telling her teacher how pepperoni is "peppery meat that comes from pigs," which is a direct quote from the book! The book is effective in helping youngsters understand that their meals and food items don't just exist in nature as they appear on the plate, and gives them a sense of how the environment relates to our food and bodies. The illustrations are colorful and practical, and aid in a child's understanding of the text.

The Holocaust Trilogy: Theresa, a Dead Woman on Holiday, the Dybbuk
Published in Paperback by Consortium Book Sales & Dist (01 April, 2000)
Author: Julia Pascal
Amazon base price: $20.95

Looking Back To The Present
This is a stunning and important trilogy of plays about the Holocaust. Julia Pascal both takes us back in time and brings us forward, we are never allowed to view the subject matter as though it is merely historical. These plays are simultaneously about the attempted destruction of the Jewish people, about the survival of the human spirit about the importance of culture and the power of love over hate. If that was all the author had done this would be an amazing achievment but these plays are written in English in Britain and so they become another testament. Testifying to the complicity of the British Channel Islanders, the nazi concentration camp on Alderney, the deportation of Jewish women by police in British uniforms and the casual xenophobia and anti semitism of the war-time British are all tackled. For the younger reader there is a lot to learn. For those of us who are older and have connections with the Holocaust there is the recognition that the pain still lingers and needs airing. THE DEAD WOMAN ON HOLIDAY in the second of the plays struck me as a powerful metaphor for all survivors, children and grandchildren of survivors alike. Overall in these plays it seems to be the strength of women and the power of love to assert itself that touches the heart.

A view of single women over forty in the dating world
An excellent source of information for women over forty years old to find romance. This book read as a bible on how to find men, keep them, the singles scene, rejection, and sexual topics. This book is extremely objective and told in a matter of fact way. It's also told in a non-judjmental way, unlike "The Rules." My favorite chapter was about his approaches. I especially liked the first two pages of that chapter. It mentions the slow approachers and how it could be misinterpreted as not interested. But, they're not because they're either shy or are afraid of rejection. "The Rules" would have said next. But, this book said ask him out for coffee or a drink if this process is taking forever. I really like this liberal attitude. Great book, I even recommended it to my friends.

EXCELLENT resource for elementary educators!
I think it's safe to say that everyone has an opinion about standardized tests (ST for short). ST's seem to be one of those things that have no middle ground, either you love 'em or you hate 'em. But, whether you love or hate ST's, they're definitely here to stay, and schools across the country are likely to only INCREASE the amount of testing they do in the future.

Since they're here to stay, it only makes sense for teachers and educators to try to help their students perform their best on ST's. The problem is that most of the time students and teachers don't know what form the test will take or what will be asked on the tests, and CREATING your own tests for preparation is a tedious and time consuming business.

Not anymore with "How to Prepare Your Students..." Absolutely filled with multiple-choice tests that are aligned to different areas of the curriculum (reading comprehension, capitalization, spelling, math concepts like place value and numeration, etc), this reproducible book should be in every classroom where ST's will take place and there is an overworked and harried teacher (that is, in every classroom in the United States!). This would also be an excellent resource for homeschooled children who would be required by state laws to take ST's as well.

The pages are easy to read and the illustrations are clear, sharp drawings. The text font is about 14-16 point, making it easier for primary grade students to read. Each page is clearly labeled with what the test covers, for example "Language Expression: Paragraphs" or "Math: Concepts/Applications-Two-Step Problem Solving". The back of the book not only includes the correct answers but teacher scripts that can be read aloud to give students the feel of taking a test where the directions are dictated. This was a nice detail that I'm glad the authors did not overlook.

All tests are multiple-choice, and some are even multiple page with "go on" and "stop" symbols that are seen on the more common ST's like the IOWA or COGAT. There is a good introduction and explanation at the beginning of the book which may prove helpful.

There are other editions of this book geared for intermediate and middle school grades as well as standardized test practice books for grades 1-8. This is an excellent resource by Teacher Created Materials and comes highly recommended from this educator.

very easy to follow, beautiful color & layout, beginning
I use this book to teach beginners. Very colorful, 1-2 page per task, visual (even the menu bars are pulled down) descriptions of all tasks/functions. One friend of mine was insulted because it made excel look simplistic -- exactly what a beginner wants!
