A beautiful book about a beautiful mathematical life
Constance Reid has created a gem of a book about her sister. Beginning with the information that all royalties will go for mathematical scholarships at Julia's high school, through to Yuri Matijasevich's slightly technical essay, informed with equal parts of love for Julia and for Hilbert's Tenth Problem, there is a consistency of tone that shows Constance Reid to be a true artist of book creation. The tenacity, reticence, and generosity that Julia brought to her mathematical life are conveyed to the reader in every aspect of the book. Give this to anyone who does not yet understand that the passion for truth makes fine human beings. Although it is consistently played down, the shocking discrimination against women emerges consistently throughout the book. Julia Robinson gave abundantly to the world despite illness, discrimination, and other obstacles. Her very generous spirit shines through the pages of this book. Do yourself a favor, and read this beautiful tribute from Constance Reid, Lisl Gaal, Martin Davis, Yuri Matijasevich, and the Mathematical Association of America to Julia Bowman Robinson.

julia kristeva review
Julia Kristeva: Readings of Exile and Estrangement Anna Smith MacMillan Press. 1996. I picked up this book with some interest as I had had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Smith lecture on Kristeva whilst I was at Canterbury. This review is going to be fairly general given that the books editor has warned me not to be too 'technical.' When I was reading the book I felt that it was important for two main reasons. It seems to me that one of the things one's time at university should do (and this seems to happen rarely) is to open the minds of its students, to make them ask questions, both about themselves and their relationship with society. Questioning the system is something which I fear does not happen enough in the post-rogernomic age of blah. This book (through the writings of Kristeva) questions the relationship of the individual to the language(s) that they use. For Kristeva, Smith, and many other writers this is an important beginning when analysing scoiety; especially when one is looking at those not as priviliged as the majority of us here at Victoria. For it is through language that we gain the framework that we use to build up our perception of the world. Smith's reading of Kristeva is aimed at giving us a new way of seeing our relationship to language; specifically the ways in which women are constructed within our (primarily) male language. Secondly I find it heartening that a New Zealander is interacting at an intellectual level with one of the major philosophers of the late twentieth century. But then what is there to stop us? We, as a nation have a great many problems and it is only by dealing with the essentials, by engaging people, that we are going to make this country a better place. That is why I think that YOU should read this book.

Outstanding
I read this book when it first came out to review for our library collection. It has always been one of the books that has stood out in my mind as an unforgettable. It is terrific not just for the youth but also adults. It is an exemplary biography for an exemplary woman. Julia Morgan was one of our countries first women architects. It is an excellent biography for girls and the general public. An excellent comprehensive read of one of our countries finest architects. I highly recommend it for someone looking for an oustanding, informative, inspiring fun read for our youth.

Influence
Julia's mother can no longer run a boarding house and must move in with Julia's older sister. Julia takes a bookkeeping job in a paper factory to earn a living. She asks counsel of a friend of her family on where she could board. He, Dr. Douglass, arranges it so that she will live at the same house where he boards. He is a strong Christian and is eager for Julia to use her influence for Christ's sake. Instead, the mistress of the house, Mrs. Tyndall, pulls her down by encouraging her to act and say things that are unpleasing to God. Abbie Reid, Julia's cousin, comes for a visit and the Lord uses her example to turn both Julia and Mrs. Tyndall around, as well as others in town. Standing up for what is right in God's eyes, forgiveness & kindness in word and deed represent a few points in this excellant book.

Basic cooking from a true gourmet
Loved this book! Nothing very complicated - just lot's of simple twists and extras that make basic cooking turn out great. Adds a lot of polish to basic techniques w/an occasional smirking remark about American culture. A nice section on salads and soups. A very detailed section about vegetable preparation. Many things that I can do (a few that I can't, but can aspire to like how to flambe). My family has noticed the difference- they don't dread when my turn for cooking comes up: Nicoise salad, stuffed artichokes, and "properly" roasted chicken. Really a nice book of how to cook rather than just reciepes.

All the magic and mystery of childhood
This is the first of the Julia Redfern books by Cameron, although she wrote it second to last! It's a fun and engaging story of a young Julia (6 yrs old I think) living with her parents and older brother Greg, in a small rented house in Berkeley, California. Julia is a spirited, imaginative girl who must deal with nosey neighbors, a rich aunt who favors her brother, and many adventures big and small. The author brings her whole world to life in vivid prose. Julia is someone you'll want to follow through the whole series of books.

Ambitious, imaginative, delicious menus .
This book was for me a primer. I enjoyed cooking, knew a few basics, had the time and desire, but lacked experience to put together elegant, imaginative, satisfying and most important, delicious meals for special occasions. In spite of its ambitious menus with fancy hors d'oeuvres and desserts, this book was a patient teacher.

The cooking instructions were friendly, but detailed enough for anyone to get first rate results, even the first time. I committed to heart a few of the basic recipes, like the poached pairs and the caramel sauce, that I found myself making over and over again on whims. It helped me gain confidence to experiment; I applied the candied orange rind confetti from the book's orange slices and blueberries, to grapefruit sorbet and created a new hit. That led to experiments with the details of other courses and finally the menus themselves.

Julia's "Menus for Special Occasions" is an important resource in my kitchen. It's a constant inspiration. I recommend it for any who does not already have it, or its earlier incarnation as two separate volumes: Julia Child & Company, and Julia Child & More Company.

Beyond the power of science
I have just finished reading this wonderful book. It is a story of a doctor discovering what lies beyond the science of medicine - so personal and so powerful - something one calls upon when science fails to heal. It is something that every doctor has to face and to acknowledge sometime during his or her career to be able to keep on going.
It is a combination of life experiences and reflection over the meaning of each of them. It is a personal journey that every doctor has to encounter to understanding what it takes to become not just M.D. but a healer.
If you have a friend who is considering making medicine a life long career, please give him or her this book to read. It will give them a good idea of what they are getting themselves into but, most importantly, it will help them to see that there is something else hidden beyond the power of science and once they discover what it is, they will be able to survive any hardship of this profession.
