A must-read!
"Leftists operate as industrial elitists and only serves big business with their social programs that insure the subordination of an underclass of consumers to keep the capital and mythical progressivism on motion"?? What are you smoking?!! Actually, many Marxists revere both Illich and Fromm. We currently live in a world marred by global finance-capital impoverishing and destroying the well-being of millions for the mega-profits of a few, and industrial realities play a key role in the problem... as well as the solution: its time for workers to harness for themselves what they create and have created for their own benefit locally and internationally. I really don't think a proper reading of "Tools for Conviviality" condradicts this.

The truths exposed by Illich's inquiries are mind blowing.
I must agree with Tod's review. This text is a life changing elixir. I am not a social science major or even a major for that matter, I simply enjoy reading non-fiction books that interest me. As soon is I read into the meat of the manifesto I was amazed by how it was effecting my thoughts on capitalism and industrialization. Although there are no solutions in this text, the truths exposed by Illich's platonic inquiries are mind blowing. I have not had the pleasure of reading many books that have rendered my condition topsy-turvy, but this simply removed the wool from my eyes in one fell swoop. It is interesting that Ivan Ilich is not mentioned in any context by the left of the US of A. This only fortifies my opinion that our leftists operate as industrial elitists and only serves big business with their social programs that insure the subordination of an underclass of consumers to keep the capital and mythical progressivism on motion. Sorry for the tangent. I was pleased to find a number of sites that do mention Ilich.

This is undoubtedly a life-changing book.
I can't say enough about the importance of this book. In short, Illich makes the point that there is a way in which the so-called "Third World" countries can avoid industrialization, and move directly into the post-industrialist state that the developed world is headed. There is no doubt in my mind that we will look back on this man's work sometime in the near future and realize how amazingly right he is. It is really a shame that he does not have more of an influence than he does. Some of the points in this book are so right that they seem impossible to refute or even question. I really can't even put into words the influence that the book has had on me. It is something everyone should read, and it's short enough that it can be done in a matter of a few hours. Please feel free to e-mail me and tell me what you thought of it, or of other works by this genius as I am going to work on trying to popularize and spread his ideas.

Helen M. Luke has a unique voice in psychology.
Helen M. Luke's clarity of mind permeates every word in this extraordinary book. Her insight into Jungian thought and her own interpretation of Jung's ideas give us a book which is one of a kind. The chapter on Orual especially interested me. The author explains our desire and need to be close to other women and how this can be a danger and a blessing. I have read some paragraphs over and over. This is the kind of book you keep and hopefully give copies to your friends.

A companion guide to individuation
If you find Jung's thoughts on individuation compelling, you will probably love this book. Having embraced the path of individuation for her own life, Helen certainly makes a substantial contribution to those who are on a similar path. It is a beautifully written book that is intelligent, thought-provoking and compassionate. It provides invaluable insights and I find myself returning to this book regularly to re-read parts of it. Helen gives her own unique perspective in applying Jung's ideas to the everyday struggles faced by us all, particularly the challenges faced by those who seek greater consciousness. After reading this book, I felt an overwhelming gratitude to Helen: her rich humanity penetrates her words and she provides an inspiring example of a person who embraced a full and courageous life.

Profound, thoughtful, and challenging.
For anyone who is interested in symbolism, cultural criticism, or personal growth, this book is a challenging must-read. So many new ideas come to me in each chapter, I often find myself re-reading the chapter I just finished before moving on the the next so that I may savor these thoughts and let give them ample opportunity to work their way into my conscious daily life. Luke discusses various topics such as the importance of suffering in our lives, the symbolism of the marriage vow, and the dangers faced in our culture due to the fact that we have subverted the symbolism of money as a means of exchange, and turned money itself into an end. A wonderful introduction to the writing and thought of the late Helen Luke

Another worthy addition to the Darkover saga.
MZB chose well in making Deborah Ross heir to her rich Darkover literary legacy and DJR does her predecessor proud in this rich and engaging novel. How uncanny it seems when Ross develops her plots and characters using techniques of which MZB was unequivably the mistress! This and it's sister and prequel THE FALL OF NESKAYA add much to the vivid and always enchanting world. Reviewers elsewhere stated that while this would be eagerly embraced by Darkover fans, it would fail to attract new readers. Not so! Indeed, the quick-moving plot and lush details would serve well as an introduction to one of the most long-lived fantasy series. However, the proofreading and editing here lack miserably. Frankly, I expect better from DAW Books and, as a college English professor, was appalled at the mistakes even my weakest Freshman Comp students would catch in a moment.

Well written and informative
A wonderful book to "fill in the gaps" that leaves the fan of Darkover wanting more. This latest installment truly helps those who love Darkover with their un-answered questions related to the period known as "the hundred kingdoms." I can't wait until the next book. For those who are new to Darkover, I would imagine that this book would make you want to read all the other Darkover novels in order to understand the concepts of "matrix science" and culture. I would especially encourage you to read the books related to the "Ages of Chaos" and "Two to Conquer"

Wonderful storytelling
On the world of Darkover during the age of THE HUNDRED KINGDOMS, petty kings make the Towers (places where people with strong psychic powers gather) build laran (psychic) weapons that can be used without the combatants ever coming face the face. In the tower of Arilinn two young men strike up a friendship that will last them all their lives and change their world for the better.

Carolin Hastur, destined to become king, is sent to Arillinn tower to learn how to use and control his laran powers. Varzil Ridenow, whose family was former enemies of Hastur and now become wary allies, goes against his father's wishes to enter the Tower because he feels Darkover needs his powers as they are the strongest in the land. They share a dream of making The Towers independent of Kings and banning all distance weapons. That goal has a chance of being fulfilled if Aerlin and Carolin elude the evil sorcery of Eduin, whose father is the outlawed ex-keeper Rumail Deslucido. Carolin must also wrest the kingdom away from his cousin Rokhal who seized it when the old king died.

ZANDRU'S FORGE is a powerful sword and sorcery tale starring two heroes who share a dream and fight to make it a reality. Marion Zimmer Bradley and Deborah J. Ross have written a novel so fulfilling and satisfying that it is impossible to put down. There is plenty of action and the characters are fully developed, even the villains, making it easy to understand what motivates them. Fans of Darkover will not want to miss out on this work that adds more detail to the age of The Hundred Kingdoms.

amazing
I was lent this book by a friend. It was an autobiography about the author's childhood and how a disease put her in a wheelchair..I always thought her Father would go first but apperantly not. Chris seemed absolutley devastated at the loss of her parents but pushed on.

An auto-biography that's a keeper
I found this book while on vacation in Scotland and loved it so much, I coerced friends in England to find me the others in the set. It is a wonderful, hope-filled account of the author's life in Scotland, and the effects of her handicap. My only question now is, what disease was it? She never tells.

A Rare Opportunity
After having read all of Marion Woodman's books and participating in two workshops at Esalen and one with Robert Bly in San Francisco, it was very exciting for me to be able to read this very intimate personal journal of her own spiritual and psychological process. In her lectures this wonderful woman is so open and honest and present and she is even more so in this book. It took my breath away to travel this moving difficult path with her. If you know Marion and love her this book is a must read. If you don't have any experience with her or Jungian theory I think it will be hard to follow since much of it assumes familiarity with her theories of the conscious feminine. She is a deep thinker with complex feelings. She models for us how to practice what she teaches. The book is also filled with her favorite poems and passages from the writers who inspired her teaching career before she went to Zurich to study Jung. There are also glimpses into her long and fruitful marriage to Ross and even a postscript from him to the reader. I am waiting for her book on the demon lover which she alludes to in this book. I love this book. There is much to savor and learn on many dimensions.

powerful and profound
marion woodman is unequaled in her ability to see life, in all it's complicated paradoxes, and articulate her journey through it... i find her latest book to be compelling as she shares her personal story with compassion and rigorous honesty... just knowing that she has walked her own path inspires me to continue to walk mine... if you've ever wondered if someone walks ahead of you then read 'bone' and know she is ....

Part of a four-book series, this is an educator's goldmine.
This four-book series is a goldmine for educators looking for practical ways to engage their students in substantive character education. The book's materials, developed and tested at one of our country's truly outstanding schools, merge solid academic content with character education. Together the books reflect a complete plan for engaging a school-community in the misson of character development. Central to the authors' [John Heidel and Marion Lyman-Mersereau] work and to the organization of the books is a school-wide, monlthly focus on a particular virtue, such as respect or courage. In this, the authors are addressing one of the core problems with our schools' efforts to respond to the current call for character education. Instead of psychobabble and talk of "inappropriate behavior" and "adjustment," their approach is a return to an older, richer language system of words, like "responsibility" and "cooperation," the language of character and human excellence.

Character formation has been described as what we do to help our young know the good, love the good adn do the good. These books address all dimensions of that description. The great power and benefit of Character Education is its appeal to the student's head, heart and hands.

Excellent program for Homeschoolers.
As a homeschooling mom, I recommend this book for all home educators. Even though it is a secular program, it uses religious icons and has quotes from different religions and uses religious figures.
Over a two-year cycle, students are introduced to a deeper meaning of common words, such as loyalty, commitment and wisdom. Students are not simply told the meaning of these virtue words. They are immersed in them. Each day there is a new activity which will give them greater experience and a deeper understanding of the concept behind the word. Activities range from journal writing to a structured conversation with parents, from creating a poster about virtue to listing ways students can practice the virtue in their everyday lives. Excellent program for a unit study. Looking forward to teaching year 2.

Good additiion to any eduction library!
This series of books is something much needed in schools today. (Even home schools!) It is a secular character based program. The big difference between this and the other character based programs that I've seen, is that despite its secular nature, it still uses religious icons from diverse cultures as examples. There are quotes from many religious figures throughout. There are lists of books and stories, to use to further illustrate the points in the different chapters. It seems to be a well thought out program. I would consider it a unit study format. This makes it appropriate for diverse groups. I would recommend this book for schools or home educators. This would be good in a religious or secular environment. With the similar quotes from different religions it may even help breed acceptance of other religions. ....

You must have this on your coffee table!
This is a masterpeice. It's beautifully done and it is a book that will be passed along from generation to generation. The author does a wonderful job and he's really an expert on this subject. And if you love this, and I know you will, you should get your hands on his newest book "Philip R. Goodwin, America's Sporting & Wildlife Artist" from the the Coeur d' Alene Art.

Now, go buy one of these books before they're all gone. This book costs a lot to produce and was heavily subsidized, as the price indicated, with donations and fundraising.

2000 Wrangler Award winner!
Charles M. Russell, Legacy has been awarded the Wrangler Award as the best western art book for the year, 2000, by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
