Memorable
A proud but impoverished Alaskan Indian family struggling to move into modern white society from its ancient culture filled with spirits -- deeply moving, humorous, tragic, yet inspirational.

A cultural snapshot of an Interior Alaskan family.
An informative and important ethnographic work giving a glimpse of one family's life experiences in interior Alaska. A story well crafted and researched by one of the descendants of an Athabascan/Irish family filled with the realities of the sometimes harsh aspects of life in the north but yet also filled with the joys of living with strands of hope. It demonstrates how people cope with the clashing of cultures and how people on another level recreate their identity with one foot in the past (belief in Cold River Spirits) and one in the present. This book is highly recommended as a prime example of how to do ethnography. At times an air of expectancy is created and much like Louise, a central character in the family story, we get a sense of what's to come. It was story told with candor and helps to give us a snapshot of the cultural landscape of her people.

Best book since TWO OLD WOMEN
COLD RIVER SPIRITS is a wonderful and welcome addition to my library. Jan Harper-Haines writes with wisdom and humor. She tells the story of her family with candor, helping readers appreciate the challenge of living in two cultures. The book is a fast read; I couldn't put it down. As a result, I gave several copies as holiday gifts to friends and family. COLD RIVER SPIRITS deserves five stars.

Compelling
Hettinga offers a compelling perspective on what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. He raises the problem with the evangelical gospel presentation and then redeigns it within the context of the Biblical concept of the "kingdom of God." Though sometimes bordering Lordship salvation, I think he is correct in reinserting the reign of Christ in the gospel presentation. When a person comes to Christ, he is giving up the reins. I recommend this book for any Christian who seriously wants to follow Jesus Christ in the biblical sense.

INCREDIBLE
What a fantastic insight to the Christian path! It is such an incredible blessing to have the most powerful and important relationship of our life explained in a "simpler" point of view. This book has made a dramatic impact on my personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Follow Me is Commitment
Jan Hettinga gave me a copy of this book in 1996 but I didn't read it until 2000. Since then I have not stopped recommending it to my Christian friends. Its message of genuine commitment of servant to Master is desperately needed in our world today. I have purchased over 30 copies to give or sell to people whom I have urged to read it. It is a life-changing book for anyone who wants to get serious about living for Christ.

Buy FIRST before any other kitchen books & specialty issues!
I recently completed a major addition to get the professional kitchen of my dreams. For almost a year prior to demolition, I studied just about every other "kitchen book" known to mankind, and saved hundreds of idea-pages from magazines, etc. Then I found Jan Weimer's book, and I so wish I had know about it so much earlier. This book is a must-read for anyone embarking on any type of kitchen renovations. Jan's writing is witty, relating the saga of all the foibles and pitfalls she encountered during her own renovations. But, more importantly, she provides a wealth of information on just about any possible aspect of kitchen overhauls. In retrospect, I would have saved lots of time and money if I had read this book first before even starting this project.

A must-have for anyone even contemplating kitchen work
Not a cookbook, but a really valuable guide for anyone who wants to build or remodel, Jan Weimer's "Kitchen Redos, Revamps, Remodels & Replacements" is a superior sourcebook. Not for nothing is this volume subtitled "Without Murder, Suicide, or Divorce." The problems inherent in letting strangers run rampant through your domain, charging fees left and right, have been known to harden even the most optimistic of homeowners.

Weimer does an admirable job of making the reader examine thoroughly his or her kitchen needs--and then divide them into "needs" and "wants." She can take a glimmer of an idea and give you the hard facts on how it would work on a day-to-day basis. She covers such neglected topics as contractual obligations of the contractors, kitchen lighting, countertop choices, and depth of storage cabinetry.

There is such an abundance of information herein that it would take'-well, it would take a book to tell you all about it. And here is that book, highly recommended by yours truly, who has been through the kitchen design/house-building experience.

This is THE book to get on kitchens
This is the best reference I have found dealing with any aspect of kitchen remodeling or even design. It is clear and honest in its descriptions and deals with both the advantages and disadvantages with any equipment or design element. Most design books are about design and not about true functions or use on the part of the user. Instead of forcing the client to cook with the kitchen of all kitchens the book will allow the client to have the kitchen that they want not the designer.

The book also serves as a wake up call for anyone contemplating a new kitchen. After this book you will not want to rush head long into the project but take it carefully without endangering your personal relationships or wallet.

This has been the only design book to cover kitchen design for child safety; universal safety and healthy lifestyle in one place broken down into appropriate categories. The whole process from desire to completion is covered in this book.

This book is worth it for the section on how to deal with research and dealing with contractors including a very good section on contracts that makes sure that you do not get stung. The book is beneficial for the client and the contractor for it provides necessary information that makes both their lives easy.

Highest recommendations for this book. It cuts the crap on design and is the reference for anyone in remodelling a kitchen though its general principles can be applied to anyone contemplating a remodel of any sort. You can get a lot of pretty design books but this is a book that works.

Fantastic information, great book
Tom's book contained exactly what I was looking for, financial information about the business of book publishing. I come from the franchising industry were every business has its operating norms and ratios. To my dismay, I was unable to find norms and ratios about the book publishing industry until I read this book. I would urge anyone in the publishing business or anyone considering publishing a book to read this book.

How to Organize Your Publishing Company
The first time I read this book was early in my career as a publisher. With only one book on the market, a lot of the advice didn't hit home. How hard is it to manage one title and a part-time assistant? Now with three books in print and more in the pipeline, I'm finding Publishing for Profit ever more useful. With growth in mind, I need guidelines from someone who's been there, done that. Mr. Woll's experiences with a number of publishing companies gave him a broad-based view that will be equally as helpful to companies who are reorganizing as well as to upstart companies who want to start off on the right foot. Does the single title self-publisher need this book? Not really (though if he or she is planning or dreaming of bigger things, reading this book might be educational). But the multi-title, multi-author, multi-employee publisher should take a look to see if his or her publishing system could be improved. Mr. Woll covers it all, from working with staff and authors, to managing cash flow and developing company goals.

Profit From Experience
Whether publishing their own work or taking in manuscripts, publishers pursue fame, fortune or both. Unfortunately, most publishers are interested primarily in marketing, promoting and distributing; selling more books. Tom Woll shows you something more important: keeping track; counting your money. He shows you how to manage your cash and organize your business--to sell more books.

I have been a publisher for 31 years and I wish this book had been written 32 years ago. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.

Prophetic Words for Today¿s Worship Leaders
This diverse collection of letters by Ron Owens to the church and various individuals and leaders of worship is challenging, gut-honest, and inspiring. Owens takes an honest look at worship in the church of America today and is calling the church to a higher standard. He helps us look beneath the surface issues of worship styles and music programs to the heart of worship.

Owen's fundamental starting points are that God alone is worthy of our worship, and that we were created to worship God. Worship begins and ends with the sovereign Lord. We must learn to come to God on his terms and embody this worship in our everyday lives.

While the letters in part one of this book address the church and its worship, the letters in part two are addressed to worship leaders. These letters take on a more practical tone and offer great wisdom regarding worship issues ranging from how we should understand and practice baptism and communion to the appropriate place of applause in worship.

This book is a wonderful resource for worship leaders not only for personal and professional challenge, but for use with worship boards, teams, and choirs. These letters are thought-provoking and convicting and could inspire tremendous change in the hearts of readers willing to make changes in their worship of God.

Keeping the Focus of Worship on God
In "Return to Worship" Owens writes thirty-seven "letters" to the church, worship leaders, pastors, and ministers of music. The letters express a deep love and passion for worship and addresses concerns facing the church today in relation to worship. Owens' letter-writing style creates a sense of personal identification. It is as if the author addressed these letters to me! Owens calls the church to focus upon God and forms of worship must not cloud that focus. In fact, Owens confronts the issue of music in worship and says, "to many, worship is music, and music is worship, and many worship music" (1999:6).

Broad ranges of issues are addressed including music, audiovisuals, sacraments, applause in worship and many others. In addition to raising these practical concerns for worship Owens concludes with four helpful appendixes (a choir covenant, a checklist for worship leaders, twenty-four questions to ask yourself in preparation for the Lord's Supper, and an article entitled "When Church Was Just Church: Worship Center or Theatre?").

"Return to Worship" is a wonderfully practical book; a must-read for pastors and those responsible for providing worship leadership in the local church.

A Prophetic Challenge Concerning Worship
Convicting and prophetic, Ron Owens challenges pastors, worship leaders, choirs and congregations to ask hard questions about their worship. Owens writes thirty-seven "letters" addressing key issues facing worshippers today. Return to Worship is unashamedly biblical. Owens calls the reader to keep God absolutely central in worship. Here are some of his more convicting concepts. One of the root problems in worship is: "We don't know our God" (1999:9). "The church today is being shaped more by our culture than by the cross" (1999:21). "...How we respond to what comes to us each day most clearly reveals whether we are worshippers at heart" (1999:42). "There is no redemption without an attitude of worship" (1999:47). "We cannot claim for ourselves the glory that belongs to God alone and expect our worship to be acceptable to Him" (1999:54). "Some pastors view their responsibility as: "to keep everybody happy rather than pointing the people to God and teaching them to be holy" (1999:58). "No revival in history has begun with a self-satisfied people" (1999:68). "He who will not serve does not worship" (1999:71). "Research has shown that much of the growth of our larger churches has been at the expense of smaller churches" (1999:79). "Often the only scripture read during the gathering is the few verses read by a pastor before he preaches" (1999:99). "Use the choruses but don't deny this generation the riches of its past" (1999:107). "We are not called to be entertainers of the people; we are called to be ministers of the gospel" (1999:137). Additionally, in Appendix 3, Owens includes a 19th century list of 24 questions to ask in preparation for the Lord's Supper. This book brims full of wisdom and insight. I highly recommend it.

My Favorite All Time Book!
My mother collected used Scottish books for me. Out of all the Scottish romance books I have read over the years this one is my absolute favorite. The history of the time in this book is spellbinding. I am fullfilling my lifetime dream of going to Scotland and decided I must read it again before I go this summer. The characters are so awesome, you never forget them.
I will never forget when he purchases her a bracelet that is inscribed, "Fear na ye, My ain true luve."

This book is the stuff that movies are made of....
Danger, intrique, romance, history...this book has it all and you will not be able to put it down.. Very engaging and complex characters, you are there with them throughout the book. Set in Scotland, Elspeth Lamond is stolen from her Campbell kin to be set upon the front steps of her estraged fathers Castle. The Ward of the powerful and greedy Duke of Argyle, Elspeth is plunged into a political arena of tretchery as her Guardian will do anything to gain lands and power, Elspeth discovers herself, the family she'd never known, and the Bigger than life Laird of the MacHughs who helps her realize who she truely is. Definitely one for the bookshelf you will read it over and over again. Out of print...please look to used books on Amazon to acquire a copy...you will not be disapointed...

Bride of the MacHugh
Wonderful romance! I have reread BRIDE OF THE MACHUGH many times since the early 80s. I really enjoy romances where the heroine is as much a part of her destiny as the hero. All the characters in this book are marvelous with Scotland, itself, the most fascinating character. Did Ms Speas ever write anything else?

A Helpful Guide to Improving Your Health
I found Live 10 Healthy Years Longer to be a helpful guide to attacking the mountain of improving my health. My personal struggles include diabetes, obesity and aging. This book lists and discusses specific causes and solutions to many diseases, conditions and circumstances that lower our quality of life. From stress management and exercise to how to use food and drink to maximum benefit, this book covers all the bases.

Although I have studied nutrition and use of vitamin and herbal supplements extensively, I have not come across any other book that is both comprehensive and easy to understand and follow. Each chapter highlights key elements and charts for quick reference and also contains practical suggestions for implementing the material.

One of the things I enjoy most about the book is that it is not just a health manual. The authors speak in a warm and personal tone, revealing their own experiences with the principles they teach. They are both vegetarian and I don't plan to be. But they outline specific benefits to the various elements of their lifestyle so the reader can intelligently decide what parts they want to incorporate.

I would like to see a chart at the end of the book to summarize the numerous recommendations. Still, this is a book I will be reading and studying continuously as I stretch toward the goal of not just living longer, but living better.

Best book on the market
One of the most difficult dilemmas for a health-care provider is to convince patients that they need to make and sustain major changes in theif lifestyles to make maintain good health and delay or prevent major illnesses. This dilemma has been greatly facilitated by a new book titled LIVE 10 HEALTHY YEARS LONGER.The book reports results of a 40-year Adventist Health Study with over 27,000 participants who made simple adjustments in their lifestyle to help them live 10 or more years longer as compared to a controlled group. The book points to the adage that it is easier to prevent or delay illness than to treat it. The recommendations are simple, easy to apply, inexpensive, and apply generally to persons of any decade. I have recommended this book to my patients and have seen dramatic results in those persons sincerely desiring to take control of their lives in regard to good nutrition, exercise, stress management, etc. I recommend the book highly as a guidebook and reference book for any person or family wishing to take charge of their health. Health-care providers and lay persons in general will find this book an extremely useful resource for achieving and maintaining optimal health and a quality lifestyle.

At Last A Reality-Based Book About Health
Live Ten Healthy Years Longer examines the principles behind healthy lifestyle habits proven to work. They bolster energy, help fight disease, and decrease the effects of aging. When applied long-term, they can even help you live longer. I like this book because it contains no pop-pysche diet-hype. It is a reality-based guide to healthy living. I trust what it says because its suggestions are based on well documented studies. I think so highly of it, I am sending a copy to my mother. I WANT to keep her around!

Good. Well written--but...
Duke Ellington, classical composer?! He need not become one regardless of Jan Swafford's attempt. I throughly enjoyed the book as to its biographies, its musical analysis. My only problem is not being an Anglo-American who has to wave a cultural flag and insist that classical music composers in the US and England have to compete with say, composers in France or Italy (like sports, I guess). I was suprised not to find Granados, Albéniz nor Falla mentioned at all. Then again Swafford goes through the Renaissance without any Italian composers.

An excellent source
I found this work both fascinating and informative. Swafford writes in an easy manner; this doesn't feel like a textbook written by some moldy professor. There are many sidebar discussions into major classical ideas (polyphony, atonality, et. al.) that prove quite enlightening. The details into the personal lives of the composers are fascinating, yet not overwhelming. This book can offer you the taste that could propel you into learning more about a composer that strikes your fancy.

As a reference tool, I have found it somewhat indispensable. I have referred to it many times either as to clear up a discussion point or as a way of deciding on what musical piece I should try to buy next. Does this include everyone? No. But it shouldn't; no one could agree on the "correct" number of composers to write about. So, while you might miss a talent here or there, you by far get more out of it than not.

Though an expert might not find it so valuable, I think this is a fine book for both the classical novice and intermediate fan.

Nicely Done!! Makes beautiful music come to life!
Are you an enthusiastic novice to classical music? Frustrated by how much there is to know and how little time you have to learn it? Like Beethoven and don't know who to listen to next? Jan Swafford's got your back!! This book is excellent.

What makes this book stand out is it's attention to the characters behind the music. To paraphrase Swafford's introduction, how can one learn about the string quartet without learning about the person of F.J. Hayden; the romantic symphony absent Beethoven's idiosyncracies? And what characters they are! Swafford dispells much of the 'tragic genius' myth of Mozart, shows us an overly sensitive (especially in love) Hector Berlioz, not to mention the silently tortured soul of Tchaikovsky. Trust me, this is going to be GOOD!!

The book is divided into chronological order of periods. The author starts off each section/period with a brief overview of it's historical context and brief biographies of some of its minor composers. Then, he goes on to the biographies, looking in detail at the lives and works of each. Swafford definitely has biases but makes them obvious as seperate from facts. He also uses quite a bit of humor e.g., "The life of ...Franz Liszt could be seen as an..illustration of the maxim, 'The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom.' Expecpt that Liszt never really left the road and never quite made it to the palace." Cheesy? Perhaps! But it makes it so gosh durn fun.

The only complaint that I have is the sardonic treatment of some composers. I was especially annoyed with Swafford's repitition of how unoriginal Mozart was. In truth, Swafford is right. Mozart, though prolific, was conventional to an extreme. But Swafford reminds us over and over again; as if he enjoys tearing an icon from the pedestal. Also, though he tries to remain impartial on the experimental music of the twentieth century, his bitterness show through; especially with minimalism, wherin "ideas, which are not interesting to begin with, do not become any more interesting." Thanks to Swafford though, classical music whic IS very interesting, becomes infinitely more interesting!

Good!
This book is really good. Some of the words are a little hard for young kids, but if your parents can help you it's enjoyable. Kingsley's style and allegorical references make this a delight to the senses, not only as a story, but as an example of a writer who truly enjoys his craft.

The Water Babies
This book was a wonderful novel to read. It showed how little kids were treated durning this time period. Once the faries found Tom his life changed forever. The author explained how he started out as little boy and saying bad words to how he changed and in to a understanding boy. The book is a wonderful read because it shows what happens to others who don't know what it's like. Not all of this is true because it is a fairy tale. The author's one quote that stayed with me the most is "You're not supposed to belive all of this because it's a fairy tale even if you do believe. This is a powerful story and should be read to little children. It will show them that being bad is not the way to go. If kids learn tpo be nice when they are young then it can stop hatred and people being mean in future years.

British Fairy Tale: Ahead Of Its Time
The Water Babies is an excellent example of British Literature that should be promoted just as much as the works of Lewis Caroll or Dickens. Charles Kingsley's work was banned for quite a while. There is no question that this cleverly written fairy tale has a lot of hidden information to explore. Makes one wonder if one can still be an Anglican minister and promote evolution? Perhaps, one can. Mr. Kingsley has other wonderful works to explore and in addition, there is his niece, Mary Kingsley who wrote on Africa.
