I learned a lot from this book
I am 16 years old and I think this book was one of the best books I have ever read.I don't read very much but I read this book in about 3 hours. It tells you the truth about being on death row. And has changed my mind about the death penalty. I am going to recommend this book to everyone I know.

An Excellent book that Everyone should read!
This is an excellent book for everyone who has any interest in the Death Penalty. The letters in the book will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you scream! This book is compiled in such a beautiful way that it makes you appreciate that although some of these people may have committed horrible crimes, they are still human, and still have feelings. I have had the pleasure and honor of writing to one of the inmates profiled in this book, and it has been an experience I will never forget

A powerful & startling insight into society's inhumanity.
This is the nearest you will ever be to the lowest echelons of hell - read "Welcome to Hell" and weep for the discarded and unwanted members of our throw away society. This is Death Row's own voice - the voice of men who have been shunned and abandoned, sometimes by their own families, whose lives are deemed to be worthless and yet who show through these writing that they retain their essential humanity and still have much to offer

Insightful book requires careful reading
Jan Johnson's book on contemplative prayer is one that I'll be rereading. It's not difficult reading, but this type of prayer is not something that you can just assimilate into your Christian walk without considerable thought and prayer. I really appreciated the author's honesty and her vulnerability. She definitely doesn't paint herself as being a person who has mastered this stuff - she is just another pilgrim on the journey, and indeed her points are more credible to me because she isn't perfect.

The book talks about what contemplative prayer is, what it looks like in someone's life, problems we might encounter - really practical stuff. She used personal anecdotes to illustrate her principles, and also quotes from many sources. I must say that I found the "notes" section at the end of each chapter fascinating. As a lover of Christian books, I'm fascinated by the books that an author refers to. And this book has the notes at the end of each chapter, instead of the all of them being at the end of the book. They're more accessible this way, I think.

I especially appreciated Jan's description of how we can practice a contemplative lifestyle in the busy-ness of life. She is quick to dispel the notion that contemplatives are locked away in a room somewhere, not living a normal life.

I own Jan Johnson's other books - "Enjoying the Presence of God", "Listening to God - Using Scripture as a Path to God's Presence", and "Living a Purposeful Life", and I look forward to reading those as well.

Please check out my other reviews of Christian books and music.

Listening to God
i had long been wanting to know what is comtemplative prayer. I had read many books about it but they just confused me. Jan Johnson showed me what it really means to pray contemplatively. She also challenged me t oadot this kind of prayer in my daily life. I have done so and GOd has blessed me mightily since then.

When the Soul Listens
Because I often feel too busy to even think, contemplation seems like a spiritual luxury I can't afford. Jan Johnson shows me otherwise. When the Soul Listens is about contemplation for the rest of us; it's about developing simplicity of soul and receptivity of spirit in the busy world we live in. It's a "how to" without condescension because Ms. Johnson takes us along on her spiritual journey and her exploration of the other side of prayer - listening. This journey goes beyond platitudes and cliches into authentic Christianity. I appreciated the careful research, thorough documentation, yet comfortable conversational style. Jan Johnson says her purpose "is to help you learn how to meet with God in life transforming encounters in which your heart comes to rest in His presence." Everything in the book focuses on this purpose in an understandable and inspiring way.

Great! Where's the sequel?
I really love this book. Unlike other 'how to draw' animal books, the artist shows the initial sketch and the finished painting. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning to draw Canids.

This book is not for beginners though. It definately assumes you know how to draw and does not instruct you in basic drawing technique. That being said, the book is designed to prep you for painting some of nature's most fantastic creatures... wolves.

My only quibble with this book, is that I would've like to see more sketches and 'turn around' style pictures of wolves sketched from various angles, and perhaps a sketch started at the beginning and progressing through to its finished stage. I learn a lot from drawing in this manner, and it is a challenge to draw the faces of wolves and place their ears correctly. (my dog is a poor substitute) GRIN.

This is a great book. I plan on looking up more books in this series!

Outstanding!
I counted 112 pages filled with 220 pictures, all in full color, including many wonderful, useful sketches of wolves, foxes and coyotes. There are 128 pages in the book and certainly more information than you could ever imagine. I am a wildlife painter and I too use acrylics and Ms. McGuire offered many tricks and tips that I had never seen but now use with a new excitement.
I believe that the book is very solidly packed. Chapters covering: Basics, Anatomy and Proportions, Pups, Attitude, Behavior and Movement,Natural Habitat, Painting a Pack of Wolves, Painting a Coyote, and Painting a Red Fox.
A few years back I had hoped to study from Jan Martin McGuire while she was in Joseph, Oregon but was unable to get there at that particular time. I realize, after reading and using this book, that I was SO right in desiring to study from her and this book will give me the chance. I have viewed her paintings and they are exciting and certainly something I want to study.
My students have also purchased this book and carry it to my classes.
If you are interested in learning more about Wildlife Painting and Wolves, Foxes and Coyotes, you can't go wrong in adding this book to you collecton of useful painting books.

I am the author
Hello! I am the artist/author of this book and I just wanted to say thank you for considering it. I would like you to know that I worked on the book for over a year, carefully researching and writing it and doing the demo's in such a way as I thought would be the most useful to you - the artist who would be reading and working from it. I have done many "mini" demo's in the book as well as completed works from beginning to end. I also include a lot on habitat such as painting snow, bark, moss etc. Hope you enjoy!

Will Power! inspires and enraptures.
I read this book at a difficult time in my life. My mother had died days before, and I was sitting in the closest weeping, when by my foot lay a copy of Will Power! I wiped away the tears and began to read, expectantly, looking for answers.

I was inspired and enraptured to say the least, and my life suddenly took on new meaning. I could breath again, I could sing again. I began to rap involuntarily. I could not stop rapping, until musical ecstacy permeated every pour of my being. I was liberated at last from the sorrows of my recent loss.

Thank you Will Power! for changing my life forever.

Welcome to Surveying
This is the most practical exam prep tool I've found to date, and I know what I'm talking about. Licensure was important to me, so I've purchased and used over $2,000 worth of references. This book is the most thorough, topic by topic prep manual I've seen. If you can master the material in this book, you're as ready for the NCEES exam as you can possibly be. How do I know? I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. Going through this book from cover to cover is definitely like "basic training" for surveyors.

Very helpful and well organized
This books really covers all the basics in Surveying, from Boundary Law to GPS. If you want to prepare yourself for a national exam, you should have it. I would say that once you learn everything in it, you are at a level between the LSIT and the LS. Contains lots of precious information and will help you find the weak points in your knowledge!

A Great Book for an Intermediate to Advanced French Student
As the title indicates, the book lists 750 verbs and demonstrates their uses with sample sentences. It is not the same as the usual verb book which lists and conjugates many of the most basic verbs, but instead it concentrates on the meaning of more advanced verbs and supplies sample sentences. The book is intended for someone who already has a basic knowledge of French. In the main text, the verbs are not conjugated, but there is an appendix at the end of the book of grammatical tables in which verbs are conjugated. The author assumes that the reader already has a knowledge of basic verbs such as "to be", "to speak", "to go", etc. but instead dwells on more advanced verbs, such as s'insister pour que (+ the infinitive) meaning to insist on or opter entre quelque chose meaning to choose among a group of things. The book does demonstrate more complex usages of some of the simpler verbs - for example, parler dans quelque chose meaning to speak into something such as a microphone, or laisser quelque chose meaning to leave something (somewhere or for someone). Sentences are given for each verb which I found extremely helpful, although it is necessary to go to the appendix if you are not sure of the conjugation of the verb.
Overall, I believe this book would be very helpful in improving the grammar and vocabulary of an intermediate to advanced French student.

Improved my French beyond any doubt
The are many books on French verbs but the emphasis is usually on conjugations. What distinguish this book from others is that it is focused on how to actually use those verbs. I am surprised to find that I am the first person to review this book because it is so useful. Before I had the book, there were many verbs which were only in my "passive" vocabulary -- i.e. when I read or hear them, I would have a sense of what they mean. After reading this book, however, many more verbs have become part of my "active" vocabulary. This means that I can now actually use them in a conversation. The examples given in the book have helped me to have a much better grasp of how and when to use those. I am very pleased with the improvements I have made. What I do with the book is that everyday I would read a couple of pages at random. After reading the examples given for a particular verb, I would imagine myself in situations where I can use the verb. This has proven to be a very effective way to integrate the words learned into my vocabulary.

ADHD-Modifications for School Success
I found this book to be to the point. As a teacher and a mother of a child with ADHD, I found excellent ideas to try with my child and at school. I liked to brevity of this book. I did not have to read pages to obtain some simple, but fantastic ideas to use with our ADHD kids.

Specifics on ADHD
This book took the typical behaviors of ADHD kids, broke them down, and made separate and specific recommendations. They are very realistic and applicable in the general classroom. I recommend it for general ed. and special ed. teachers alike.
