Excellent!
A great one

If the 2nd Ed. is as Good as the First ...
G. Leech and J. Svartvik wrote the first edition of this book, released in 1975. I used it as a University text in the late 1980s, and it sits prominent amongst my references in my office. Though the book is designed for advanced ESL students (at the University level), I am a native speaker of the language, and find the approach taken unique, but of greater value than many other style manuals. I refer to it before going to the Chicago Manual of Style or the MLA Style Manual.

The authors look at the USES of grammar rather than the STRUCTURE of grammar. This is very useful for writers (like myself), teachers of ESL, advanced students of ESL, or those who need to learn how to communicate better (Engineers).

By far the best Alaskan guide book I've ever seen..
This book is just great.
I'm moving to Fairbanks Alaska in just under a year, to attend college and then teach somewhere in the "bush".
Anyways, after just doing a quick glance at Alaska books in the local bookstores, I saw this one.
It's just amazing.
It rises FAR above any other guide book I've ever seen...I had to buy it on the spot.
What sets this book apart is a combination of things.
1. The photos.
this book is FULL, I mean FULL, of very good quality professional/artistic photos.
2. It doesn't skim.
This book is one of the few books on Alaska that I've seen that didn't just skim over the Arctic and Seward Peninsula regions.
These areas all have very detailed descriptions, photos, climate info, sun rise/sunset info.
It delves into even the minor towns such as Kiana, Anaktuvuk Pass...etc.
3. It includes literary ESSAYS written by professional authors about certain areas...and there are at least one or two essays in every regional subgroup detailing everything from culture to climate to history.
4. As mentioned above, this book details the history of Aaska as well. And just like everything else in this book...it doesn't merely gloss it up into a 3 page chapter.
it gets very much into virtually every aspect...and includes historical photos, carvings, etc.

Overall, this book is incredible.
It transcends what is traditionally a guide book and becomes something anyone would read to learn about Alaska.
Very good book, definitely recommended.

Best Alaska guidebook: gives history, culture, photos
This is the best guidebook I've seen about Alaska. Its an illustrated introduction that lures you into the wilds of Alaska with amazing, artistic photography. It provides background, history, insight, and discusses things to do that don't fit into the cookie-cutter format of other guidebook series.

The photography is beautiful and artistic, printed in a format just large enough to give you some idea of the grandeur of Alaska without making the book too unwieldy to take along on your trip. Also included are historical drawings, sketches, and high-quality maps. Its humorous in parts (what is a "sourdough"?).

This book goes beyond the normal guidebook which might list town, lodging and restaurants. It starts off with a fascinating history of the entire state, a discussion of the people of Alaska, the wildlife; then discusses four major areas of Alaska (and their history, people, etc.). It helps you get to know the state.

The descriptions of food, lodging and tours are adequate, but you may want to supplement these listing with a AAA guidebook or travel agent.

A Must-Have
I found this book in the library, had it a few days and ordered it from a local bookstore because I had to have it. I found the aspects described (moon squared venus, etc., for example) to be very insightful. Not to many books can claim being 'complete', and strangely enough, this one doesn't, but it comes closer than any other I've picked up. I really love this book and thank the authors for writing it; I wouldn't be without it.

If you are learning about astrology, you'll also love Stephen Arroyo's "astrology, karma, and transformation", a wonderful book by him which compliments 'Compendium' well. All Arroyo's books are must-haves as well.

What Fine Book
I tried for along time, trying to grasp the concept of Astrology, but it was seemingly too far out of my reach to commit to memory and to understand the inner dynamics of the whole thing. Then a friend handed me this book,..a loan ,..lol,..it was not long before I had misplaced it(such a lie) ,..as I tried to get my own copy but, no one was able to obtain one for me. The book opened Astrology to me,..it helped me understand what Astrology actually was, how it worked and even better gave simple but indepth examples of the planetary placings and aspects,.I soon felt confident with my ability to interpret charts as I finally could understand what exactly I was looking at,..now so many years later I have my own concepts on Astrology and it's meanings, that differ very much with the typical Astrology, but I must confess this book still dawns my shelf and always will. This is the book I recommend to anyone who shows interest in Astrology,..so comprehensive yet also so inviting. My hats off to the Author. Bright Blessings Anue

food combining by jan dries
This is the best written book on food combining that I have encountered to date. Jan dries has taken the Hays Diet to the next level of incorporating it into the lives of everyone who wants to eat well and feel better. I was able to read and understand the process of digestion and adsorption in uncomplicated everyday language. Jan Dries makes food combining easy and fun!

COMPLETE BOOK OF FOOD COMBINING
This book is the best book on food combining that I have read to date. Jan Dries makes food combining easy and understandable for anyone who is fortunate enough to read this book. I was able to see and follow the process of digestion with diagrams that were as simple as any I have seen in a book of this kind. It was succinct and to the point not a drawn out treatise on the subject. Would recommend this book highly to anyone interested in food combining or curious about the subject.

This book explains how we manifest our fate
I *love* this book & think everyone should read it just once! It takes some complex ideas and translates them with an easy to understand conversational style that pulls no punches. It explains how we create the realities in our lives with our perceptions. Then it details how those perceptions affect our world and outlines what we can do to make it a better place for everyone. I love the art work and its simple description of neurosis. Best of all, this book just make you feel good.

I love this book!
Thank you Rusty Berkus. Your work always makes me feel great!

Corky, The Bathtub Who Couldn't Swallow
What a delightful book for young children. The story presents a great message to children. It lets them know that everyone is special! The illustrations are eye-catching.

Corky is a wonderful book for children.
This is a wonderful story for children. It is an interesting way to show that each individual is unique and valuable, and we all don't have to be judged by the same criteria. The plot is exciting and captured my son's attention. I would definitely recommend this book to people with young children.

Crossing: A Journal of Survival and Resistance in World War II

the crossing by Jan Yoors
I could not put this book down till it was over and even then I read ti again! his first one the gypsies was jsutas interesting. He lets you in to the world of the mysterios Gypsies and let's you know how real they are. Fastinating info!

Do NOT miss this one.
Jan Yoors was the son of a Flemish stained glass artist. At a young age he ran away with a troupe of Gypsies (more properly, the Rom) who were camping in his Belgian home town. Yoor's parents amazingly accepted his new double life, as Yoors lived on and off with the Rom for many years. His life with his Rom family is covered in his first book "The Gypsies." (which is another must-read.)

"The Gypsies" ends as WWII sweeps over Europe and catches the Rom in its poisoned grasp. Yoors then became an agent of La Resistance, and this book tells, in spare language and deep feeling, what happened to Yoors and his adopted family of Rom. Some of it was so horrific that Yoors can only allude to the events, and his emotions are so deep that we only learn a tiny bit of what must have happened to many of his beloved Rom family. The insight into the deep dedication of the Resistance leaders and fighters is unique.

Do read this book. It is so utterly wonderful that I pass copies of it out to many friends.

Outstanding! One of my all-time favorite cookbooks
This book is outstanding. The recipes are all tried-and-true, comparatively easy to make, and absolutely wonderful. And each is preceded by a warm, interesting little anecdote -- which a friend once described as "proof that somebody actually ate this". I really love this book, and cannot sufficiently recommend it. (I have all the cookbooks written by this author, and strongly recommend them, as well.)

a great book
Kit Fox visits a horse her tribe took from the snake indians(their enemy) in the mornings before everyone's awake. When she is found out she isnt allowed to visit the horse again. Then, when their enemy threatens to ambush her tribe, Kit Fox must race against time to get help.

Danger and self discovery
Kit, a young Blackfoot girl, feels like she can't do anything because of the social taboos the tribe has for young women. When warriors bring back a horse, the first of its kind the tribe has ever had, driven by her curiosity she secretly visits the horse with the help of her friend and eventually learns how to ride it. Caught in the act she is banned from visiting the horse much less riding it. But when the tribe is in danger it is up to her to ride for help and defy all the rules.
