We must have this book back!
This is a perfectly written book for little ones, giving them an understanding of Salvation, Prayer, The Bible, The Holy Spirit, Baptistm, & The Lord's Supper, with helpful hints for parents at the end of each chapter. My daughter made a decision to accept Christ as her Savior (with a complete understanding of her decision) as a result of this book and so did our pastor's daughter, both at the age of 4. I'm now looking to pass this on to others and am terribly upset at not being able to find it!

The perfect book for little children!
This book is so well written! The simple pictures captivate my 2 1/2 year old, and he loves me to read this story to him, over and over again. I'm sure this will be one of his favorite books for many years. It really has helped me to explain difficult concepts to him. I would highly recommend this book for every Christian mother who is concerned about the salvation of her child! I am saddened that I can no longer find this book anywhere.

I've been urging Multnomah for 15 months to re-issue.
A simple, clear presentatation of Biblical doctrine that even adults can comprehend! No cartoon characters, but attractive quality life-like illustrations of Bible characters and contemporary children and adults. My grandchildren love to hear it and/or read it themselves again and again. It's one of my favorite gifts to give to kids and at baby showers. Please join me in urging Multnomah to re-issue it! If anyone knows of stock available please e-mail me.

basics basics basics
A solid little book about riding instruction. The whole volume puts a lot of emphasis on being safe around horses (as indeed the title suggests), it stresses basic safety rules and then devotes an appendix section on dealing with accidents and lawsuits. One great feature of this book are the review questions at the end of each chapter. I appreciate equestrian texts with that type of feature.

A must for new and experienced instructors
Jan Dawson provides great information on all aspects of a riding program. The sections on lesson plans, dealing with accidents and lawsuits, and safe school horses will be useful for both instructor and clientele in evaluating their current situation.

This is the best book ever written for instructors
This book is excellent for all levels of instructors. It is easy to read and understand and applicable to all riding styles and levels. The exercises are self diagnostic and easy to use for all riders.

Excellent holiday historical coffee table book
I first heard about this book on a PBS program and found a copy in a local bookstore. It is chock full of wonderful photographs, great recipes, and lots of historical information about Christmas from all around the state. I highly recommend this book as a holiday gift for any current or former Tennessee resident, or those that enjoy this type of book.

Beautiful book depicting unique Tenn. traditions.
College in Maryville, TN showed me its unique culture and traditions I hadn't known in Chicago. They are so interesting are beautiful. The book brings it all back in its fullness and beauty. The photographs are real, and stories just from Tennessee. It's a wonderful gift for anyone who has ever lived in Tennessee.

Great!
I was plesantly suprised at the high quality, and the way Christmas traditions were presented. More than just another Christmas book, a great book about Tennessee, some wonderful recipes, and sentimental stories. A great coffee table book and a great idea for anyone who's from Tennessee

This book will make your heart cry!
Reading Kathy's story will bring out every emotion that a human being can feel: love and hate; despair and hope; fear and courage. Not only does she open her heart to her readers, but she leads them through the "why me". Kathy's story is told in a form of writing that lets readers' know it comes straight from the inner most depth of her soul. Any person in an abusive relaionship should read this book to understand why they must seek help now.

Powerful and Compelling Story!
The most powerful, truthful, and heart-wrenching story I have ever read on Domestic Violence, or for that matter, even seen in real life cases of abuse! This women went through hell! However, as you will see when you read this book, the author, Kathy Williams, teaches all of us what "Survival" is all about. Most of us would not have been able to endure such things as Ms. Williams did, and still live to talk about it!

This is a book that all organization, shelters, and groups should read, and possibly have Ms. Williams speak about her experience. She is truly an inspirational to all!

This book is very graphical, so be forewarned. However, a very good book for everyone.

An excellent, touching account....
This is a riveting account of one woman's battle with an abusive spouse, and what she had to do to make her life right again. If you want to read something that will make you laugh, cry, and challenge you on the most visceral level imaginable, you need to read this book.

TIMMAN'S SELECTED GAMES
Published in Paperback by Simon & Schuster (Paper) (February, 1996)
Author: Jan Timman
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $28.26
Average review score:

Superb analysis makes a classic textbook
This is a collection of Jan Timman's analysis of 80 of his own games played between 1983-1993 that were originally published in the magazine New in Chess. What you get is honest grandmaster analysis of each game at the time the games were played, instead of a games collection that is slapped together on the spot to make a fast buck, like many of the new chess books that are published these days. Timman will go down in history as one of the three strongest players to never win the world championship title, along with Keres and Korchnoi. The book layout presentation is very clean and classy, with excellent diagrams.

Good games and analysis
It has been said that Timman is one of the best (and underrated) chess writers of the past few decades, as good as Nunn (Tactical Chess Endings), Dvoretsky (Training for the Tournament Player, and Attack & Defense) and Speelman (Analysing the Endgame, and Best Games).
This is a fine games collection, and Timman's playing style is much more easily absorbed by the average player than the calculating style of a Tal. Timman is a strong attacking player who places great emphasis on total control over the entire chess board.

Do not underestimate Timman's quality
I've read all of Timman's books over the years, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

Last summer, I showed a couple of boxes of chess books to a close friend of mine, rated 2400. Though he had actually borrowed this book 2 years ago, he carefully perused all my books
over a couple of months while staying at my place.

Without exaggeration, when it came time to sell most of these to the local dealers, he quietly repeated over the course of a week that I should read this particular book. He didn't bother mentioning any of the others, and I have quite a few good books.

He stated that Timman's analysis was outstanding. We both agreed how rare this is (in combination with being interesting) in chess literature. Of the four best authors, Dvoretsky et al., Speelman, Nunn, and Timman, Timman is clearly the best.

I found the work to be thorough and Timman is the only author that I can tolerate with any opening (his reputation for playing just about any opening is famous).

The earlier work, The Art of Chess Analysis, is readable by lower rated players, contrary to what some of the reviews claim.

This work is even more readable by a huge range of players.

I think it is a fallacy in chess to worry about books being too difficult for certain strengths of players--willpower and persistence are the correct criteria. One of John Nunn's more denser books was studied along with three others by a friend of mine who jumped from 2050 to 2300 as an adult within a year.

Timman's book has superior analysis to ALL of the books in the first half of the 20th century (Alekhine, etc.) and you'll enjoy his opening analysis to boot!

Everyone knows a tomboy
Finally, a book that speaks to me. My husband and daughter have enjoyed it too, and they understand their energetic and fun-loving mom much better now. Thank you!

Everybody knows a tomboy
Mischievous is right...the woman who said she could avoid temtation but never could resist mischief is telling my story, as my family will agree to in an instant. It's a wonderful way to romp through life. Tomboy Tales was origional,well-written,and continues to inspire fascinating discussions about developing our own identities, weather tomboy or not.

Tomboy Tales/The adventures of midlife mavericks
Hooray for Dr. Secrist! Tomboys of ALL ages will be able to personally identify with Tomboy Tales. The 13 women featured in her book bring to the surface feelings and events we have all experienced. If you are a Tomboy, you'll love how Dr. Secrist has identified the ten Tomboy Themes. We have always been physically energetic, independent and adventurous. After sharing this book with midlife tomboy friends, I have noticed pride in their facial and verbal expressions. We are proud of our tomboy traits! Happy, mischievous mavericks - that's us!

A compelling read.
I'm guessing Nick Jans probably lives like he writes. There's nothing extraneous here. Every word has a purpose. Unfortunately, the message it conveys is one of loss. The wilderness is changing, disappearing, even in the remote areas of the world. Regardless of the message, this book is a beauty. The photography is vibrant, the prose compelling, and the sentiment touching. The wilderness couldn't have found a better voice.

Great photos and essays
This is a potent book; just 164 pages but every photo is jaw-dropping and not a word is wasted. Author is a life-long Alaskan and in most essays he is reflecting on Alaska and things Alaskan. Humorous, touching and stimulating in many other ways. Well worth your $$.

Another Winner
Nick Jans has done it again -- this time with pictures! Mr. Jans' previous compilations of essays ("The Last Light Breaking" and "A Place Beyond"), as well as his Alaska Magazine articles, introduced readers to his great love and appreciation of the Alaskan arctic and its inhabitants. In "Tracks of the Unseen," Mr. Jans also includes his own photographs, which ideally complement his essays. There is some content overlap with his essays in "Alaska" (photographs by Art Wolfe), but this is a more integral pairing of the essays and photos. This is a lovely book, with Mr. Jans' graceful writing continuing to transport readers to the great north.

Beneath the Ice.....
"Eva Padlyat lived in a village on Ungava Bay in northern Canada. She was Inuit, and ever since she could remember she had walked with her mother on the bottom of the sea. It was something the people of her village did in winter when they wanted mussels to eat. Today, something very special was going to happen. Today, for the very first time in her life, Eva would walk on the bottom of the sea alone..." So begins Jan Andrews' tale of a young girl's first trip alone through the thick winter ice. In painstaking and intriguing detail she describes Eva's adventure; cutting a hole in the ice at low tide, descending to the dark ocean floor below, lighting candles to illuminate the sea bed, collecting mussels, and exploring this beautiful hidden world..... Ms Andrews' engaging tale, filled with history, mystery, drama, and suspense captures the imagination, and is rich in imagery and magic. Illustrator, Ian Wallace's quiet, dreamy artwork, in soft, textured tones, pulls the reader beneath the ice and right into the story. Perfect for youngsters 5-9, Very Last First Time is a fascinating and evocative experience that shouldn't be missed, and works well as part of a unit introducing the Inuit culture and way of life, or as a stand-alone for story time.

Amazing Time
The possibility of gathering mussels under the ice at low tide was absolutely amazing to me. I had never heard of such a thing or imagined it. What a wonderful world we live in! Andrews writes of young Eva's solo walk on the bottom of the sea and she does an intriguing job of it.

The illustrator,Wallace, enriches and expands the written story through his detailed pictures of the village and native life on Ungava Bay.

I hope Andrews & Wallace collaborate again and soon!

Wonderful - a genuine adventure for young girls.
This is one of the best books for young girls that I have come across. A young Inuit girl is sent under the ice at low tide to collect muscles for the family.. this time by herself. She gets distracted, the candles burn out leaving her in darkness just as she starts to hear the water returning. What an adventure. I buy this book as a gift whenever I need a present for a beginner reader girl.

Visual Magick
Published in Paperback by Mandrake of Oxford (January, 1991)
Author: Jan Fries
Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $374.80
Average review score:

Jan Fries & Visual Magick
I am fond of this book. I have my doubts about Jan Fries.

Fries neatly describes a practice containing elements of NLP (representational systems & perceptual positions), automatic drawing techniques, and a clear (excellent, even) coverage of sigil technique. Jan's emphasis on a non-forceful kind of Taoist approach is worthy of special attention. I have not found much of the latter half of the book useful, myself, but the parts that I have found useful are very well done and free of obfuscation.

That said, I do have a problem with Jan's egotistical glorification of Thelema (in odd and not necessarily appropriate ways) and his claims that some effective techniques of Chaos Magick are "nonsense" (contrary to the experience of a great many people who use them). His statements that visions appear shadey and vague as if one were just imagining them, though I may have misunderstood his meaning and/or intent, lead me to question just how much of an "Adept" he actually is in certain respects.

That said, I believe the book survives the author, and is a worthwhile contribution to any occultist's library (well, unless of course you're a die-hard ceremonialist. Not much here for you in that case).

Visual Magick
One of the great books on shamanism and chaos magick. Get this book !

Especially loved the section on automatic drawing. I wish he would expand on it. I wish there was a section on the Alphabet of desire. There is just one problem on page 37 he writes

"The following exercise devlopes the ability to draw 'units' of linework in a swift and continuous manner. It helps to learn about space, flow and"

He didn't his sentance !

one of the best "chaos magick" books around
Though Jan doesn't consider himself a practicioner of "chaos magick" (he is a neo-thelemite in the Maat current) people who *do* consider themselves practicioners of "chaos magick" love him.

Very down to earth. Check out his stuff on runes too.

Forget Pete Carroll, that pompous mystagogue. Stick with Jan Fries and maybe a bit of Phil Hine, and you're on solid ground.
