great hands-on approach!
This book covers the history of pyramids from Egyptian and Mayan pyramids to modern versions in Paris and Las Vegas. The descriptions and pictures are wonderful but the best parts are the projects. Learn how to make precise measurements, move loads (without wheels), find the North star, apply chemistry to pyramids, etc. etc.

Roman forts and daily life.
This book is the story of Roman fortifications along Hadrian's Wall. Using the First Tungrian Cohort as a vehicle, the author traces their building of different types of fortifications and their life among them. The book includes many diagrams and exquisite cut-away images to show what the various buildings looked like both inside and out. Also, the well-written text explains construction techniques and a good deal about daily life in the Imperial Roman Army.

This is an excellent book on Roman fortifications and garrison troops, and I recommend it highly.

Great Book!
The book Runner is fairly short, a little over 140 pages. It's about a football player named Kyle who moves from a wealthier class to a lower class of town, where there are a lot of homeless people and goths and scums. His sister Meghan, ran away because of family troubles and not fitting in and everything. Kyle finds her diary and he starts to believe that it was his fault that Meghan ran away because he wasn't acting like an ideal older brother. The story contains parts of Meghan's diary, and you can relate that to what happens to Kyle. He meets this one Gothic girl who, he discovers, can lead him to where his sister is. There's a lot of detail and you feel as if you're actually there. It's a great story, and I totally recommend it!

Soda Jerk, by Cynthia Rylant: A Review
There are certain characteristics that come with living in a small town. Everybody knows everbody. Gossip spreads like wildfire. But a characteristic not often expressd is one of feeling like you're trapped--like you can't ever get out. In the poems contained in the book SODA JERK, by Cynthia Rylant, a young boy expresses his feelings of being trapped in his small Virginia town. This book focuses mainly on the unseen reality of small town life. I used a cutting of this book in high school speech team and went to the state competition with it. This book is very insightful and helped me to realize more of what is there than just meets the eye.

A must-read!
At the time this book was published in 1987, there were about 35,000 Jews in Germany, most of whom were children of Holocaust survivors. (Today, there are also quite a few Eastern European Jews who came after the Berlin Wall came down). Later, when I myself visited Germany in 1997, I had many conversations similar to those in this book.

"I'm proud to live with my family in Germany as a religious Jew," writes one contributor. "My bags are always packed," writes another. Between these two extremes of comfort and fear, there's a wide spectrum of feelings about what it is like to be a Jew in Central Europe today. These are 14 testimonials from German Jews, not as the public would like to see them, but how they feel in private, in the depths of their hearts and souls. A troubling, thought-provokng book that is hard to read, but impossible to put down.

Trees (Young Scientist Concepts and Projects)

A Treasure of Tree Info for the kids
Wow! What a treasure trove of fascinating facts for kids! The book is beautifully and intelligently illustrated.

Kids learn how very important trees are to the environment, how to examine a tree's bark, how to make bark rubbings, how the bark reveals the age and health of a tree, how it pumps water into the atmosphere, how photosynthesis occurs and why it is important to each of us.

It lists a number of intriguing experiments for kids to do at home with a minimum of supplies and fuss. Parents will find winning ideas for science experiments at school, and kids will be inspired to go on nature walks in their neighborhood to examine and learn from their own and the neighbors trees.

Children, with just a bit of help from mom or dad will learn how to measure the height of a tree (with an ordinary wooden stick and the formula in the book). The section on roots explains where the roots are, and shows pictures of rainforest tree roots. It shows how trees in desert areas store water.

An inquiring child learns how to estimate a tree's age from its growth rings. As it takes the child through the growth process from bud to leaf, it teaches how to make a leaf pressings and starts his or her curiosity on how to identify a tree from its leaf.

I'm a grandmother of five in the 9 to 12 age range and each will be given this amazing book. It is so fact-filled most adults will learn alot from it, yet simple to read and understand for the kids.

I'll be watching for more Peter Mellett books in the future!
