Finding the Past
What an engaging story! I love novels that can capture the geography and culture of a particular place in time, and this one does that in parallel. As the main character traces the steps of his fathers demise, we move between history and contemporary - between comedy and tragedy. I've always wanted to visit the Western Australian coast, and I feel like I have been there after reading this book. A beautiful and well written first novel by Peter Burke. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

A savings tip on every page!
This book is excellent for two reasons.

1. It's easy to use. Right in the front of the book are the things you need to know right away: tax law changes, an index of life events that might change your tax status (in addition to table of contents) and the page where you'll find that info, and the top 10 tax saving tips.

2. It's full of savings information. Each page has a savings tip highlighted in blue with "Tax Saver" tips -- all of which are really useful.

Important for anyone who is prudent enough to be concerned about tax savings year-round.

Really Beautiful Expressions of Friendship
It is very easy to find a beautiful love poem. Passion is such a strong emotion that it has inspired countless lyrics. But it is very difficult to find a great friendship-love poem. That more stable type of love seems to move under the radar. Nevertheless, there are some wonderful poems that express love for friends, and Peter Washington has found the best of them and included them in this wonderful collection. Some of the best poems included are (the originally titled) "Friendship" found in traditional Aztec verse, "Love and Friendship" by Bronte, "My Lovely Friends" by Sappho, "Being Her Friend" and "The Word" by John Masefield, and finally, "To My Friends" by Primo Levi. These poems really moved me and gave me a lot of insight into my relationships. They also helped me to express my love for my friends to them. Peter Washington has (actually) truly made the process of selecting poems for an anthology an art, and I cannot thank him and the authors of these poems enough.

This is one amazing book
This book has all the information about her and things that I really didn't know. I love the section where the compare her(Katie Holmes) to Joey (the character on Dawson's Creek) and how differently she is to the way that she appers on the show.

This book inspired me to start writing free verse.
A friend lent me this book about 6 years ago and it changed the way I thought about poetry. I had never read any free verse before, and instead of being difficult and vague, the poetry was engaging, funny, colorful and descriptive. I couldn't believe that people my age were writing these poems. That summer my journal was full of poems describing my experiences while travelling in south america. I treasure these for the images they portray.

I liked the book because the poems are commented on, which helped me to learn what makes a poem outstanding. Since that summer I have always written poetry and it's a real joy, an artform that provides joy in expression.

Even if you don't want to write poetry, this book is full of poems that will make you want to sing. Memorable ones that you will think of a long time later.

One starts:

Hey girl hipswaying swirl of colored cloth...

and continues in syllables that roll off the tongue.

Enjoy!!

Great Read Alouds for Young teens
Heartbeats and Other Stories is worth owning for its inclusion of "the Attack of the Jolly Green Giant." This story deals with teen boy/girl relationships and perceptions of sexual harassment. Using humor that kids can relate to, the author explores that often fine line between teasing and harassment. Despite the humorous approach, serious discussion around this sensitive and controversial issue can be meaningful and enlightening to both students and adults. I recommend taking a look at this story for classroom use.

A Classical Work on International Regimes and Institutions
Oran Young defines international institutions as special arrangements in response to collective action problems in international cooperation. In regard to regimes, on the other hand, he accepts at first international regimes as social institutions since they are products of human activity. This formulation eventually facilitates the possibility of regime change as independent from power and distribution of capabilities. In his criticism of the realist concepts of institutions, Young follows the argument; hegemon's role in international regimes is an exception not a rule or a general pattern. In this respect, he mentions three types of regime formation unlike to hegemonic stability theory, which accounts only hegemon or coercive power in this process. Regimes can be spontaneous, negotiated or imposed institutions while these three categories of institutions are not mutually exclusive. First two types of regime formation do not necessitate any hegemon. Coercive power or hegemon may be significant for just imposed regimes. Young also argues that hegemon may be important only for the transformation of imposed regimes not for spontaneous or negotiated regimes. In this formulation of international regimes, as mentioned before, power is not sufficient condition for regime change. Both exogenous (international system, distribution of capabilities, power, prevailing technology etc.) and endogenous (domestic politics, inner dynamics or internal contradictions of regimes etc.) factors can lead to regime transformation. It is also distinctive in Young's examination of regimes in contrast to the realist formulation of regimes that he evaluates these institutions are crucial at both domestic and international level. They are not epiphenomena (of power) since they are important as independent variables for international cooperation. In addition to these theoretical arguments International Cooperation has also three case studies. They are in the issue areas of marine fisheries and deep seabed mining, nuclear accidents, and arctic shipping. In all three case studies Young emphasizes the importance of regimes as social institutions for preservation and governance of natural resources and environment. He also considers that regional regime arrangements would be more effective and less costly than international regimes. Overall, Oran Young's work can be considered as a classical work on international regimes. Henceforth, it can be deemed as a must reading in this field.
