Enlightening for both reader and writer
Light From the Ashes arrived as I was watching the latest news about the U.S.'s war against terrorism. I have often wondered if war were declared on the U.S., as it has been declared on so many other nations during my lifetime, how I would "survive." I fear the struggle to survive almost as much as I fear death. Light From the Ashes gives new insight into what it takes to survive war, deprivation, persecution and other horrors of war and holocaust. While many who survived the Nazi Holocaust as adults have written and spoken of their experience and its affect on their remaining years, few, if any have spoken and written of the experience as a child or adolescent. This collection of how those early experiences may have shaped the choice of career in the social sciences is monumental is helping me understand the term "survivor." The essays are literate but completely comprehensible to the layman. The insights into the life of each contributor and editor (also a contributor) comes to light in some cases because they were asked to participate in this volume. It is a timely work, and, I am sad to say, will probably never be out of context in our world.

the text is terrific, first-rate text
I would have called this book "Tooth Walker," and perhaps have anthropomorphized the "characters" a bit more, make it both scientifically solid (as it certainly is) and more fanciful, just slightly. It's certainly a valuable little book, and as are the marketing spinoffs. I deeply look forward to reading the upcoming series (Grolier) that Carol Young and Skip Crane are producing (over the next two years), on Imagining Nature, a fabulous and instructional series for young children on nature's formations, such as trees, fungi, ice--all the mysteries (and hidden faces) in the faces of nature. This series will spin the world of young scientists and the curious among us all.

A Must for Lawrence Fans!
Although this book is unfinished by the author, it will not disappoint! This novel should be viewed for its lyrical merit rather than its story line. "For a little man who suddenly imagines life to be something and the Word a mere bauble in the hands of buffoons like himself. Finds himself strangely anxious, books showering down on his head like the ruins of Carthage, while all the time he wants life, life, whatever life may be. Finds himself anxious-to be with young people, to share their existence, their youth"...."Mr.Noon" The story follows Gilbert Noon, a young schoolteacher that has a torid affair with a fellow schoolteacher named Emme. After her father catches them in the "act", Gilbert flees the small town to start life anew. Vowing to pursue his doctorate in Germany and to put away silly romantic endeavors. After escaping to Germany, his real trouble begins, he meets Johanna, a smoldering mature German woman with much experience in the ways of life and love. I really enjoyed this book, and I hope you enjoy another one of Lawrence's treasures as well!

If you have child/children, you got to have this!
I read this book in 1996 for my senior year Psychology project. I was vastly impressed by how humorous and straight to the point this book writes about handling your teenager and how you can cope with it by using humor. Till this very day, I can still remember how throughly I enjoy and learn from this book. Now that I have a child of my own, I strongly recommend this book as it helps me during the hard times, reminds me of the good times and to enjoy every minutes of it. A definitely good book for relaxing your nerve. Enjoy!

Imaginative Tales for Kids
This was the first storybook that was ever read to me. The Book tells the story of an uncle that lives in the chill of Russia during the winter with his nephews. As days go by, he starts telling stories to them ...

These stories, are perfect for children ages 10 and up. They are written pretty much as fables, all of them having some kind of insight as to how people are. No violence is included in the text, though some is meant to be understood, as in Little Red Riding Hood.

Do get this book. Read it out loud to your young and see their reaction.

Peter Parrot and his Magic Star
I was thrilled to discover this spiritual book, "Peter Parrot and his Magic Star" for children last year and bought it for my two children, aged 4 and 6. This was the first time I had found anything that approached the subject of meditation and healing at a young child's level. Both my children just loved it! It was a favourite at bedtime each night for several months.

Not only is the book fun, containing cut-out finger puppets of Peter and his friend Rupert Monkey, it is colourfully, comically illustrated by Rosemary Young. The characters are humorous and energetic. Colour just flies from the pages.

Jenny Dent's story takes the young reader into the world of spiritual healing through the use of vivid colours, as Peter Parrot leaves his Himalayan home to visit those parts of the world in need of healing. It is introduces them to the importance of the God within in the form of the powerful symbol of perfection and healing, the six-pointed star. It also makes them environmentally aware. Jenny also includes further ideas for parents to pursue with their children whilst reading.

Included with this book is a multi-purpose CD that my children adored at bedtime. I have listened to tapes of Jenny Dent leading meditation before, but this was the first time I had heard a meditation designed especially for young children. Accompanied by quiet meditative music, Jenny leads the young listener through the visualization process, speaking slowly and gently, as she introduces them to simple meditation. The stories on the CD involve the same animal characters, but do not reproduce the same story in the book, so this not a readalong. Instead. the children are encouraged to use their own imaginations. Adventures take place in the South American rainforest, in the Himalayan mountains, under the ocean, within a rainbow. Some tracks are suitable for movement and dancing, so this becomes a wonderful addition to the home-library.

I do hope Jenny writes more books in this series. If you have children between 2 and 8 years and you would like to help them become more harmoniously aware of all life, I highly recommend "Peter Parrot and his Magic Star" by Jenny Dent.

Peter Parrot Visits Africa
What a wonderful way to introduce children to meditation!
In her Peter Parrot series, Jenny Dent has created delightful animal characters who rise from the page through the superb colourful illustrations of Rosemary Young. From Peter himself to Esmond Egret and Candy Camel, the pages bound in colour and visual excitement. And rightly so, for colour plays such an important part in the healing meditation that Jenny is teaching in her two Peter Parrot books.
Included in Peter Parrot Visits Africa are two cut-out finger puppets of Peter and Esmond, ideal for interactive play.
When I discovered both Peter Parrot books a year ago, my two children (4 and 6)were delighted. The six years old, who likes to listen to music at bedtime, spent six months listening only to the accompanying Peter Parrot CD. "It makes me relax," she said.
This multi-purpose CD is not just an audio version of the written story. Instead it uses visualization and music to recreate the characters. It presents a flavour of Africa with drumming music and leads the young listener through the process of meditation with "miracle" music.
Speaking gently and slowly, Jenny leads the young listener into a relaxed meditative state.
In today's world children often experience a rushed existence, focusing on intellectual learning at school and physical activities during extra-curricular time.
I am so pleased I found this book, so that my children can experience that time of quiet and peace so necessary for complete spiritual growth.
"Peter Parrot Visits Africa" is fun. It is colourful. It offers a positive alternative. I highly recommend it.

Reconstructing History
If you are studying Wright Fliers for the first time, or are an avid consumer of aviation history, this book will do wonders for your understandings of the Wright Brothers and their time in history. If you have already read Kelly, McFarland, and Crouch, you will find a new and revitalized interest.
Jakab and Young combine their talents and knowledge of aviation history to weave a few new bits of enlightening knowledge. Their explanations and corrections, that they cite, show that they have put a great deal of time into "getting a few things straight". They do a really nice job of tactfully showing the errors in other publications, giving credit where credit is due and help to put things in a proper light. You will enjoy the ride.
