Clear and simple
I think this might be a little difficult for four-to-eight-year olds, but it does give a clear and simple overview of the ideas of the great philosophers. There were a few typos, and the various type sizes were distracting. Each section begins with a full-page drawing of a particular philosopher and his milieu with callouts. The callouts are the part that might appeal to the four-to-eight-year olds. Many of them are quite silly.

How'd They Do It?
I just wonder what the publisher thought when the idea of an overview of philosophy for young people was first proposed. Luckily, they must not have been paying much attention because this extraordinary book is in print. It's really amazing that they could pull this book off. How do you explain what the great thinkers throughout history have thought to teenagers and younger? Somehow, Jeremy Weate was able to break down philosophies to their most basic forms. Weate was also aided by his sense of humor and by the pictures of Peter Layman which can help keep interest from swaying. This really is a very valuable resource. This book is supposed to be directed toward readers of the ages 4-8, but I think it is better for a little older audience. I was able use it very effectively in some college English courses I took in high school. A Young Person's Guide to Philosophy is really excellent. It is really an interesting read and can be very useful.

Outstanding introduction to great thinkers
This book provides excellent, brief, and simply worded accounts summarizing key arguments of the great philosphers (and some also-rans). Strength: clear but not condescending sketches of some very difficult ideas. Drawback: Personality eccentricities are overemphasized. The recommended age range is misleadingly low: my nine-year-olds who are advanced readers found it challenging but within their grasp; an advanced 8-year-old friend gave it up as too hard; and a 10-year old friend who is a very good reader found it profitable and informative. I'd recommend 9-12 as the age range.

If you love the young women in your life, buy this book!
I am a 30 year old woman who received this book back in 1987. I just "rediscovered" it this week. As I look back on the entries, I'm surprised at how much I've grown, how much I've learned, how tolerant I've become & also how I have very much stayed the same. This book guides you thru some of the bad things that can happen to a woman who doesn't plot a course for her life. Some of the myths of being a woman are debunked (can't do math, can't be a trucker, or a construction worker, etc). What I liked most is that it doesn't push any specific feminist ideaology - just asking the question - what would you do? The message is clear - don't count on anyone to "take care of you". It tries to teach us to take care of ourselves. It is true that this book (at least my edition) is geared toward working / middle class teens. But as a middle class teen, it helped me enormously! This book is great and I look forward to getting it for both of my daughters!

Shows teen girls that life doesn't end after high school..
I am constantly ordering this book. I am a foster parent for teenagers and I use this book as a family activity as well as at girls slumber parties. It makes thinking of the future and what you want to do with your life almost a fun thing. My childrens' therapists keep borrowing it and not giving it back!

This book was a true inspiration for me..
This book really helped me in believing that sex before marrige isn't right and now that I am married and can always look back and thank the author!

Passionate collection of sensuality
I bought this book 2 years ago now. The poems are sensual every every particular way.
At the beginning of the book it states that if you're looking for "erotic" as in sexual then this wouldn't be for you, such as if you're expecting pornographic poems, then this wouldn't be the book you're after.

However if you're into more sensual reading and enjoy poetry in general, then this little book is one you'd want to add to your collection. It has passion, desire, and sensuality all rolled into one little book. Beautifully written and very well composed.

A little gem of a book.
There are poems from ancient tradition and from modern, short brash work, intense emotive pieces and snappy and witty tongue in cheek pieces. The book is a beatiful publication with a great introduction to a wide selection of poets. It explores the full gamut of what is eroticism from shy romantic fantasy all the way through to full frontal in your face sexuality. Great to read in bed with your partner, even better on your own on the bus on the way home from work.

This should be in every sensualists' library
The cover is demure but the words inside are not. Erotic Poems has selections from some of my all time favorite poets and I have discovered many more. If you love poetry, you should get this book. If you are an erotician, you should get this book. If you love classical literature, you should get this book. In fact, just get the book!

This book is simply great.
Okay. I first bought this book for a quarter at a thrift store. I had found that day at least twenty other books, and I can't remember why I got High Stakes. Embarrassingly enough, I read the book at the age of 14. I realize that it is a children's book, but I was bored.

It was, is, great. I love it. I have read the book so many times that it is literally falling apart. I'm serious. It is no longer bound. The thing is over one hundred individual pages.

The thing is I am 18 now. During finals week at college, I stumbled onto the book in my closet. I was so frazzed out and needed some mind candy, so I reread it. It is still great. I think it might be one of the greatest children's books ever. I want the other five books badly, but cannot find them.

I consider it a tragedy. Anyone with children, or an active inner child, should move heaven and earth to get this book. It is well-written, and never underestimates the intelligence of the reader, unlike many children's books.

This Book Is Great!
I remember when I was real little. Two of my friends and my brother got this one book called "Photon: High Stakes" from a book giveaway at school. My brother read it emediatly and never said a word about it. My two friends never got around to reading it ever. A couple of years later, My mom started to read the book to us, I was little so I thought it was boring and stopped listening...she stopped reading it too. Anyways, in 5th grade, I picked the book up from my brothers room and began to read it. I absolutely LOVED it! It was one of the best books I had ever read. After I finished it, I found out that there were more of them. I was so excited to get them, but I couldn't find them anywhere. The publisher had stopped printing them! I went crazy. I told my friend about it and he decided to pull the old book out from the library and read it. He loved it too. He said he thought he saw the first book down at the town library, so I went. there it was, the first one! . I read it but found it wasn't as good as the first. "Oh well," I thought. Ever since then, I have made it my "quest" to find the rest of those books and to find out where I can get the cartoon. I STRONGLY suggest this book to anyone who likes Sci-Fi.

READ THIS BOOK BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
When I was about 9, I noticed this book my brother and sister kept reading. It had this awful cover of this dumb wimp in a life-vest fighting some monster. However, some years later, I was so bored that I picked up any book and lo and behold, it was that book. I opened it anyway.
The first line was typical. "A Hush fell on the crowd." I thought that this guy doesn't even know his grammar. Then, at the next line, "It wasn't a particularly large Hush (or something like that, hard to remember). That was when I realized this was a special book. (look, I was bored, ok?)
I read about the laser game and how it's really a test for beings (aliens and humans alike). It contains everything: romance, adventure and best of all humour. The characters are all really different and you just wish that you could be one of them.
After reading that book a gazillion times, I wanted to find the rest in the series. I decided that I should write to the publisher but I (get ready for this) LOST THE BOOK!!!
So now, here I am, just lost, trying to remember that disgusting (yes, I do still think it's disgusting) cover of that really cool sci-fi book.
One more point. I hate science fiction.
Go figure

I have two step-sons, ages 14 and 12. They are not avid readersbut were fascinated by this book. We are planning a trip to Brazil andamong the books I suggested for them was this one. I picked it up at on a recent trip to New York. My kids found it a great adventure book and motivated them even more to want to visit brazil.

A Timely Book of Support and Humor
I found this book remarkable for two reasons: 1)the stories of patients and families struggling with Alzheimers, yet still being able use their sense of humor in positive ways, and 2) the author is giving all her profits to research for a cure.

So often books in this category are difficult to read, but this one is not only readable but enjoyable. The patients and families she writes about really come alive. I found myself deeply touched by their stories, including those about the author's mother.

This is a book for anyone who believes in the triumph of the human spirit and the need for laughter to overcome adversity.

Young rediscovers the humanity of Alzheimer's sufferers.
"Ellen P. Young shows us how to rediscover our humanity in her writings on the lives of the Alzheimer patient and Alzheimer caregiver. She awakens us to see the dementia sufferer as a person still deserving of our touch and love. ..."-- Deidad Benincasa, Geriatrics NetworkLiving with and caring for those with Alzheimer's disease and dementia can be an agonizing experience for loving family members and caregivers. It may seem impossible to find the silver lining of hope during these difficult times. How can caregivers and family members lighten the load of grief brought on by such cases? And how do caregivers especially deal with the intensely difficult day-to-day work with those who are afflicted?Veteran hospital social worker Ellen P. Young, who saw both her mother and aunt struggle with Alzheimer's, says that though hard to find, humor is often the best medicine. "Between Two Worlds" is the first book to explore, through personal accounts and vignettes, the rare moments of humor that unexpectedly pop up during the caregiving of people suffering from Alzheimer's and related dementia. Young brings the courageous experiences of care providers and relatives to life as they encounter the challenges of dealing with these seriously afflicted patients. At the same time she reveals the touching and gently humorous moments that go a long way to ease the tension and pain. While respectful of the plight of affected families and patients, Young gathers a timeless collection of "fear busters" that "access mirth" with touching chapters such as "Please Don't Eat the Marigold," and "I've Just Found Out I'm in Baltimore." "By staring the Alzheimer's monster down and even laughing a little in the face of it," Young says, "we bolster our courage and release the chemicals (endorphins) in ourselves to gain a sense of well-being in the face of adversity." A must for all caregivers and families, this is truly a book that, once started, cannot be put down. Ellen P. Young (Lutherville, MD), who retired in 1997 from clinical social work at Union Memorial Hospital, continues to volunteer in the medical community and has written for National Catholic Reporter, among other publications. All royalties go to Alzheimer's research.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Internet (The Complete Idiot's Guide)

RIght on target to teach the technically uncertain
At least in the United States, the demographics of people who are just beginning to use the Internet have changed. The bulk of the new users are now either the very young, or older people who are more technically uncertain. As is generally the case with the youthful brain, the young people need a minimum of direction, most of which must be focused towards keeping them away from the bad stuff. However, the older people need assistance in the very basics, which is where books like this are invaluable.
In teaching a couple of sections of community education Internet classes for elders, two things became very clear. The people in the class really want to learn how to use the Internet and they are capable, but must be treated with more sensitivity than others. Ironically, the hardest problem is convincing them that the old adage about teaching old dogs new tricks does not apply to the Internet. With the proper approach, they can learn how to use it to solve their problems.
This book takes just the right approach in teaching people like them how to use the Internet. Using soft spoken tones and with just the right amount of humor without descending into cuteness, this book provides the helping hand that is needed to get beginners up and enjoying the fruits of the web. Many of the latest controversies are also dealt with, such as the flaps over Napster and the Instant Message (IM) wars. I often field questions about such topics when I teach beginners how to use the net. Most are regular followers of the news and take an interest in what is happening in the world.
The growth in the number of Internet users in North America is slowing down and the background of new users has changed to include more adults who are not computer literate. This creates a different market for beginning books and this one hits that market dead center. With the right approach and covering all the basics, this book will help insure that the Internet continues to expand and serve a broader based constituency.

Plenty Basics and Then Some!
"The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Internet" is an instrumental reference and tutor for anyone wishing to plunge or even tip-toe into the Information Superhighway world! I have found this book outstanding as an preparation aid for teaching an "Introduction to the Internet" class. Much of the information contained in the book may already be common knowledge among internet enthusiasts, but the added bits of information on many topics (including valid websites for help!) are invaluable. In covering the "history" of the Internet, the book even goes into specifics of the past accomplishments and failures, leading up to today.

It's best to have some knowledge of Microsoft Windows (preferably Windows 98) prior to jumping to Internet activity, however. This book covers a few Windows basics.

If you're looking to get a late start into electronic information-age, this book is a good start, and at a pretty decent price!

Scary and Wonderful
Watching the relationship between Austin and Abilene is a little like looking down from a high tower watching two cars race toward a deadly collision. You desperately want to prevent the collision, but the movement of the cars is too beautiful, too graceful, and you don't dare intervene.

The beauty and grace are supplied by Pete Fromm, whose novel is filled with insights and surprises from the first page. What makes it the more remarkable is that the story is told by Austin, a high school sophomore in middle-of-nowhere, Texas, whose world view has been shaped entirely by his bipolar older sister, Abilene.

This is a fine novel on so many levels. It's a love story, a tragic love story set in the vast emptiness of West Texas, where everything is simple except for the people. It's a sports story, with an ambitious coach (Abilene) with an ax to grind jealously guarding her young phenom (Austin) out of love, hope and desperation, all of which are as twisted as a mesquite trunk. It's a story of a family whose love is under a blistering attack by mental illness, obsession and misunderstanding.

Most importantly, it's written with compassion, empathy and a delicacy of language that makes us hope that Fromm will keep producing for a long, long time. Put him in the ranks of Annie Proulx and Larry McMurtry. Come again, soon, Pete.

you won't be disappointed
This is probably one of the more memorable stories I have read in the past few years. I was introduced to Fromm's writing through Nightswimming, and have gotten my hands on everything else he has written since then. His stories are compelling, his writing style is easy, and the characters have a great deal of depth and breadth to them. All of my friends who have read this book have been blown away by it, unable to put it down, consistently moved at the end.

How all this keeps going!
From page 2 I was hooked. Perhaps it was because I could relate to the Texas surroundings, or the brother/sister relationship, or even the family struggle with Bipolar Disorder. But whatever it was I was engaged in this story from the "get-go". (See, I told you I could relate to the Texas stuff!) Don't think you have to share their passion for baseball, or know anything about mentall illness. You will live it! Pete Fromm had me crying--a heartfelt, hopeful cry. I wish I could visit these characters 10 years later and see How All This Ends Up.

what a book!
A great book! Full of action and adventure

Everything this author writes is great!
This is a wonderful book, very easy to read, and full of emotion and angst and drama. Written in the first person, the reader is invited into Pagan's world, and an interesting place it is too.

There are 4 books in the series, this is the first, I highly recomed the others.

Her most recent book, 'Eye To Eye' is also excellent!!

Catherine Jinks is the finest author for this age group around.

a humorous and moving adventure set in days of yore
This fast paced story will be sure to bring a smile to anyone's face, as our narrator and main character Pagan Kidrouk wittily tells us of his adventures. Set in Jeruselem when it was under Christian rule in the 12th century, Pagan is a half Arab, therefore a half enemy for the suspicious minded, a fact that can cause him trouble from time to time. Previously enrolled with the city garrison (and involved with some of the city's low-life), Pagan owes money and is therefore forced to enroll elsewhere. He went to the Knights of the Templar, or Knights of God. Hillariously told through his eyes, Pagan must learn about being the page for the knight Lord Roland deBram. As time and events wear on, these two build their friendship, and as the Turks threaten the holy city, Pagan is faced with losing that friendship, and so pushes his luck one more time in an effort to save it.
