THE BOOK OF EXCITEMENT
This is really a good book because there is action, excitement, and even dreams. This story is about a girl named Elizabeth who needs to help this guy named Andy Moser to return home from Ghost World, BUT along their way, they have to survive a tornado of broken glass, and dodging ice-spears falling from the sky. They also have to fight a pack of dreadful vampires. This is one of my favorite book because I like action and supernatural stories. I recommend this book to people who like supernatural adventure stories.

"Finding the Way" finds its Way!
Finding the Way captures the reader at the forward dedication and continues on the first page till the end. You feel and hear Cally immediately by the length of the sentences and strength of the feelings contained within. This story told from a 13 year old's point of view tells of the resilience of children in an imperfect family situation not of their doing, who do their best to find their way at home as well as in the outside world. Time seems to stand still for them, but life goes on about them.
Barbara E. Irgens has captured the feelings and tone in her wonderfully developed characters of the 4 children, ages 7- 13. These days when children's lives do not evolve around a rather dated but traditional image of father/mother parenting, sheltering, and protecting, Finding the Way gives voice to many feelings that children have because they are children and because they have no choice but to go on the clues presented by the adults in their lives.
This is a wonderful middle school chapter book for 6th, 7th grade, and 8th grade levels. The discussion and creative writing opportunities abound in every chapter. Although the characters are Irish, the emotions and situations are universal. As an educator I think it also points out the importance of the public school, as THE bright spot of the day in many children's lives, and how important is our job of educating with consistent love, respect, and compassion.
I highly recommend Finding the Way and give it top honors as a first novel offering.

This book is a porthole to the life of the Intelligentsia.
The most amazing thing about this book is its entertainment value actually equals its historic value. These are bios of women who put their values and the lives of Russian peasants ahead of their own. It features the primary account of the world famous assassination of Governor Trepov from the pen of his assassin, Vera Zasulich. It also features Vera Figner's account of her unsuccessful (and finally successful) attempts to assassinate Tsar Alexander II. The sacrifices of these women include shedding aristocratic lifestyles for back breaking labor in noblemen's fields so they could teach peasants how to read and spread propaganda for their cause. Some of their comrades actually went insane in the process. You will read about their experiences as exiles in Siberia, and one of the greatest escapes Hollywood never saw. Whether you consider yourself a history buff, or just appreciate great stories, you will love this book.

Ghostworld: Cold Dread

Just like they say, only better...
Andy and Elizabeth....These two were good friends of mine, though they forever are searching for a way to get Andy home in the 4th book of the Ghostworld Series. After a tearful good-bye with friends of No. 3, the adventure starts anew with a harrowing meeting between human, ghost, and larger ghost, but you'll have to read that for yourself.

After which, we find Andy is sick, and even though his deeds have earned him a first class ticket to his home, he is unable to be transported away. Finding little hope, Elizabeth must return to where the adventure started, the living world, and find much needed medicine for her friend, and perhaps, love interest. But watch out, dear Elizabeth, as forces from the darkest depths of the after life are ready to strike at any moment.

This novel was simply amazing. I loved it, read it five times over, and will always be a mainstay in my book collection. The Siegals truly took you as far as they possible could with this work, and even if it is for a younger person, aspiring writers and even twenty-somethings could take away a lot from the theme, unrequited love, homesickness, and the triumph of good in its battle against evil....but I've said too much. Read the book to truly find out.

A timeless story of courage and conscience
Barbara Willard's If All the Swords in England, first published in 1961, makes a happy comeback in this quality paperback edition by Bethlehem Books.

The drama unfolds during the turbulent years of the argument between King Henry II Plantagenet and Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, concerning juridical authority in church matters.

After the tragic deaths of their parents, brothers Simon and Edmund Audemer are separated. Edmund becomes a page in the court of King Henry II, while Simon becomes a scribe in the household of Thomas Becket.

Willard's use of the literary device of the two brothers allows the reader a "first-hand" glimpse into both the characters of Thomas Becket and Henry II as well as into the climate of the times.

The book is full of exciting episodes (including a miracle), and interesting characters. Barbara Willard's If All the Swords in England presents a timeless story of courage and conscience. It is also an excellent introduction to the heavier Becket by Anouilh and T.S. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral. Grades 5-7.

An excellent presentation of the Iroquois.
This is one of the volumes in the long and extensive "Indians of North America" series. It provides a good and brief introduction to the culture and history of the Iroquois tribes. Children who wish to learn more about native Americans will enjoy it, as will adults. We all learn of the importance of the League and their impact on the American Revolution as well as their impact today.
