Not as good as the TV series.
Richard Carpenter's Robin of Sherwood TV series (aired under the title "Robin Hood" in the US) is one of the best filmed versions of the legend ever. Many of Carpenter's ideas -- most notably the Arab Merry Man -- have been borrowed by later filmmakers. Unfortunately, his series of books are really just juvenile novelizations of the TV series. They don't add anything to the shows, and I think Carpenter's writing works best on the screen. Still, if you can't get the episodes on video, this book will give you a taste of the TV series that Robin Hood historians call one of the most influential 20th century versions of the legend.

Two Party System????
One only needs to thumb through this book to notice how many photos there are a former president Clinton and v.p. Gore! I counted atleast 15 before I became sick! There are even photos from his earlier years! I realise that this book was published in 2000, but, come on. This is a text book used in the public education system... there certainly something subconscious (brainwashing) about this layout and design in the book and I resent it!
I especially liked the chapter on the two party sytem where there is an illustration of the two parties..a picture displayed of the Democratic Convention (bold clinton banners)and a small animated picture of an elephant representing the Republican party.
I am offended that this book is let into our school system. Although the context "may" be accurate (my stomach needs some rest before I read it), there is no doubt in my mind that this insertion was more than a mere oversight. This book covers 250 years of history, there is no justifiable reason that Clinton/Gore should appear in every chapter of this text!

More about Thoreau than one might want to know
There are biographies of Henry David Thoreau, and there are literary criticisms about Walden and his other works. _Young Man Thoreau_ is closer to the former than the latter. It's a psychological analysis of his early pre-Walden life based on his own writings, records of his life, and remarks made by his contemporaries. Those insights are juxtaposed against Freud's theories and Erik Erikson's life-cycle model of human behavior. And the verdict is that Thoreau experienced a prolonged adolescence with a psychosocial moratorium that delayed the burden of adult responsibilities. His eternal search for a "great man" can be traced to his own family situation, which featured a weak father figure and a domineering mother, so of course the author brings Oedipus into the picture. Further discussion is held about the triangular relationship between Henry, his brother John, and their friend Ellen Sewall, who turned down both brothers' offers of marriage. Henry's reactions to his own accidental fire-setting to the Concord woods and the early death of his brother are also put under the figurative microscope. The result is probably as accurate an examination as we can get, given that the actual man is not here to defend himself or confirm the diagnosis.

And yet the fact remains that he *is* not present. So how can we tell if this analysis, though well researched, is the truth? If you have your own comfortable ideas about Henry David Thoreau, you probably would do well to steer clear of this book. Or read it with a discerning eye, knowing that you'll be shaking your head at some of the suppositions offered. Interesting but not essential.

Young Reader's Picturebook of Tar Heel Authors

Authors: Richard Gaither Walser, Mary Reynolds Peacock, and North Carolina Division of Archives and History
Amazon base price: $3.00
Used price: $7.82

useful for those curious...
This Young Reader's PictureBook of Tar Heel Authors has a somewhat misleading title. There is a small (about 2 inches by 2 inches) photo on each page. Each author profile takes up one page, and those photos are the only "pictures" in this book! Parents expecting a picturebook a la Dr. Seuss are going to be disappointed.

The text of each profile is doubtless accurate, having been compiled by the expert Richard Walser. The book is dated though, having been published in 1966. No authors with North Carolina roots who have made their mark primarily since then are included (Gloria Houston, Patricia Cornwell, Rick Boyer, Elizabeth Daniels Squire, Charles Frazier to name a few).

This book looks like it would excite very few young readers, but, to paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, folks who go in for this sort of thing will go in for this.

Well written but where are the main characters!?!?
Having burned through the first books in the series in as little as 3 days each, and enjoying them thoroughly.. I was a bit let down by the changes in the series with book 5 and this, book 7. In book 5 Terry started working with several new characters for a part of the book, blending in the main characters half way through, and finishing the story nicely. In book 6 he alternated between Richard and Kahlan's viewpoints, and kept us involved. In this book, we dont see the entire reason we are wrapped up in the books till the last 50 or so pages.
The main reason I have read the majority of the series I have is because of the main characters that you become soo familiar with, as if they were closer than family. Terry is a very good writer, and has spent thousands of pages pulling us into the hearts and minds of Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and the rest. I found it disheartening to see the series just idle along, getting no closer to any sort of conclusion to the story line. Granted, I do not want it to end, yet I dont want to see it end up like the Wheel of Time, and be on book 13, and have poured through several books that add more plot rather than tie off loose ends along the way.
In all, I am sure I will re-read the entire series when the next addition is released. I cant say I liked this one very much, but will still read through it again, just to have the story fresh for the next addition. There are some rewards to the readers in regards to Richard, Kahlan, Cara, Zedd, and Adie.. But it took 700+ pages to get them.

too short
I love the Sword of Truth series... as always, I end up craving for more! Once I got started, I can't bring myself to put it down. I do feel that a lot of the interesting stuff got crammed into the last few chapters and that too much of the story centered on Jennsen. Other than that, I think this book is an excellent addition to the series.

A truly good book with a fresh perspective
i don't know what the other reviewers are talking about, but this book directly addresses the criticism of the previous books while introducing a breath of fresh air to the series.
1) it provides a new iteration to the generic plotline of the series, i.e., richard and kahland get separated, defeat the enemy and reunite.
2) it puts the whole d'haran/old world in a new perspective
3) you get a better sense of what is going on in the different worlds, the daily struggles and the ways of life
4) there is suspense. you know something is wrong but you don't know what.
5) new characters, new tensions, new conflicts.

Terry, this book is great! not the best (the second and third were) but definitely worth a read and worth the time.

Oversimplified, Unsatisfying
This book will never satisfy the curiosity of the average teenager. Photographs show adolescents fully clothed. The text is oversimplified and incomplete.

re: Newark, Ohio's review
I believe photographing naked adolescents is illegal.

Very interesting.
Great book, very educational. It contains many wonderful graphics and straight forward stories. It talks about birth control, different sexual positions and pregnancy.

I found it be very very educational and interesting. It touches alot of ground.

Master of Tae Kwon Do (Choose Your Own Adventure, No 102)
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (1990)
Author: Richard Brightfield
Amazon base price: $9.50
Average review score:

Not a good martial arts adventure
This book was stupid. For one thing, it had almost nothing to do with Tae Kwon Do or martial arts. It was just a lame adventure about the CIA and a lunatic South Korean military leader who wants to take over North Korea. Emphasis on the word "lame." Save your money for Master of Kung Fu, Master of Karate, or better yet, Master of martial arts. Two thumbs down.

Not Brightfield's best Choose Your Own Adventure book
I found Master of TaeKwonDo a little disappointing after reading Brightfield's other books. The book was only about a madman's plot to take over the world and saving your friend Ling. Also, it's impossible to actually defeat the bad guy in book. Save your money and buy one of Brightfield's better Choose your own adventure books: Master of Kung Fu, Master of Karate, Master of Martial Arts, or Master of Aikido.

A great book
I admit there are not many happily-ever endings in the book and it's a boring plot about world domination. Yawn. but it's a good storyline nonetheless. Joan Pyun was more than nice to interact with and I liked the interaction with Joan.

Frank Bolle's artwork looks great.

What a disappointment
My son loved this book until the sound died 2 days after he received it. Unfortunately, before the sound went away altogether, the book made a continuous, wheezing noise that was impossible to turn off.

Sound Doesn't Last
The photos in this book are wonderful. However, the sound lasted for all of one day. I purchased 2 of these and the batteries on both died within 24 hours. I'm returning them.

Awsome Cross-sections
This book on cross sections goes from the 1st train invented through the Le Shuttle built in 1994. It is an awsome book with great illustrations of all the trains and there individule history on the tracks, this gives you a great look at the trains and how and who built them. In the back of the book the is a timeline of all the trians plus a glossary on the parts of the train and there use.

i do not like it at all
This book is very differcult to understand, but basicly it is about a boy and a girl that are going out. They go to see the firewors because it is the forth of July. When the fire works are over they go across the river in there canoe. Then the auther starts to talk about the girl being dead. That is the part that got me cunfussed the most. So it is basically about a boy that is in love with a girl but the girl dies.
