Best principal there will ever be
If you want to read an excellent book about stalwart soldiers for Christ, written by a principled (no pun intended), committed, and passionate Christian, and if you want to be "spurred on toward love and good deeds" by the examples of these amazing and courageous believers, read Trial and Triumph! In his writing, Mr. Hannula makes Augustine, Ambrose, Polycarp, and all the others come alive--just as he makes history exciting and real for the students he teaches in his history classes. Do yourself a favor and read his book.

very unique book
I would recommend this for adults and older children. Most Protestants put so much focus on the Bible that they don't learn much about anything that happened in the Church after the book of Acts. This book will help fill in the gaps.

Brush up on church history
This is a great way to learn church history through fascinating biographical sketches. It's a children's book, and I have read it aloud to my six- and eight-year-olds, but I enjoyed it for my own reading first. It will make you appreciate your religious freedom in a new way, and inspire you to live a courageous Christian life.

Third Grade All Saints Elementary
- The children were drawn in by the thrilling and suspensful stories, and the richness of the language. The book is an excellent primer for moral discussion, and has wonderful applications for Creative Writing and Language Arts.

Very nice
I liked this book. Five good stories for kids. I liked the first and third the best.

Even better than Scary Stories to tell in the Dark!
The stories in this book are creative and fascinating. My kids (ages 7, 10 and 13) listened spellbound and repeatedly begged for "just one more" story. The stories are scary without being gory or terrifying. The characters are interesting and just believable enough to keep your interest. Highly recommended!

Sensible training in horsemanship
John Richard Young is one of the finest minds and spirits dedicated to training our companions on the planet( he trained dogs as well as horses). The revised edition of his Training of the (Western) Horse is the single book needed by the neophyte who comes to horsemanship and equitation with an intelligent desire to make the horse a partner in pleasure and comeptitive sports alike. I wish the University of Oklahoma Press would bring out a new edition, and also gather his articles written for various horse publications into a third volume for the compleat JRY. His death was a loss to the equestrian community, but this book with its broad understanding of history and the varied styles of riding and uses of horses over the centuries is without a peer in the specialized literature of the Horse World, and remains as his monument.

Comments from N.M.
I have read the book by Mr. Young and I have tried his theories and I have found them very helpful on not just my horse but on many other horses as well. I own a very spirited Arabian and were it not for this book I would have given up on him. I am always quoting from this book when I try to teach others why they are having problems with their horse. It is an excellent book to have as a reference guide and highly recommend that novice horsepeople, judges in horse competitions and even experienced riders read this book. I have read horse magazines as well as other books by different authors and JRY's book is the standard by which I measure them by. I come from a place where the methods are somewhat harsh and crude but I always thought there was a better way. Thank God the local Library had a copy and that there was a man named John Richard Young. I now own a copy of my own.

For a taste of the truly unique Elric! is unsurpassed.
This RPG has proved brilliant and entertaining for both novice role-player and experienced, for both those familiar with Moorecock's work and those who are not. I'll be the first to admit that the release of 3rd edition D&D has distracted me from this ingenious work of dark fantasy but before 3rd edition came out this system was the only one out of the many I have played in my 12 years of gaming to hold my attention (there are plenty of new rules that cropped up in 3rd edition that look familiar to ones in this book). The system of incresing abilities and skills is much better than the much acclaimed 3rd edition D&D. This game is also a much more "realistic" RPG than anything that TSR or Palladium ever put out. The fact that characters do not gain levels but instead increase their various skill and ablities by practicing them is a BIG step towards working realism in RPGs. There are none of the class restrictions found in other RPGs in this game. You can do what you learn how to do. And for those of us tired of explaining why our worlds are not controlled by the blatantly more powerful elven and dwarven races, this games' human-only content is quite refreshing. There is of course the non-human race known as the Melniboneans but they are little more (functionally speaking) than an eldritch and sorcerous race of decadent humans. My only complaints are that the book is paperback and that more people don't realize it's brilliance. Combat is extremely well laid out with an unsurpassed balance of realism, utility, and entertainment. Even if you do not plan to run the campaign this book is FULL of great ideas applicable to any RPG from personal character quirk lists to a great and novel system of allegiance to the forces of law and chaos. Just beware of those brutal critical hit tables! oof! Feel free to e-mail for general correspondence concerning elric!.

Excellent
Apart from its lackluster art, this greatly original dark fantasy rpg will blow you away. The rules and the setting are easily some of the best in the business. If you play RPGs and are tired of the cliche Tolkienesque fare, this is a must buy!

Appendix
Possibly excessive exuberance aside, I still stand by my last review and am curious about the experience others have had with this game. Email me at my new address, Kaecyy@MochaMail.com, if you like. Blood and souls, baby!

History from newspapers
Buyers beware!!! This book is huge... Amazon should give its dimensions, but I am guessing more than a foot long and 3/4 foot wide. Great reading about history -- if you have strong arms and a sturdy table.

a great motivator for any IT person out there
After buying the book I was a little scaptic about this book keeping me intrested but rather than being too technical and 'professional' the book is more like a drama with alot of winners and losers. It was a great inspiring experience-reading stories like the ones about bill gates, steve jobs and his body 'woz'.The book floats along the evolution of the computer industry, the IBM empire, the Microsoft phenomenen throght the stories of the people who made it and those who couldn't stay in the top.A must read for every person who has some computer background who wants to know how it all started and also for the not-yet computer fan who just wants a good read.

Tales Well-Told
These really are "stories" rather than commentaries. A born storyteller, Young presents what he calls "inspiring tales of the entrepreneurs and inventors who revolutionized modern business." They include the "pioneers and pirates" who developed the prototype for the first commercial computers as well as Thomas J. Watson, Jr., William Shockley, Jack Kilby, Jay Forrester, Edwin De Castro, Douglas Engelbart, Bob Noyce, Andy Grove, & Gordon Moore, Edward Roberts, Steve Jobs & Steve Wozniak, Don Estridge, Lew Eggbrecht, Bill Gates & Paul Allen, Tom Carter, Bill McGowan, Craig McCaw, Bob Taylor, Steve Case, and Marc Andreesen.

Perhaps at least a few of these names are unfamiliar to you. That is one of the great benefits of this book: It introduces a "cast" of literally hundreds of different "characters", most of them probably unfamiliar to most readers. I was fascinated to learn how important their "roles" were...how significant the impact of their work has proven to be.

For whom will this book be of greatest interest? Probably for those such as I who enjoy a story well-told, who have a keen interest in knowing more about various "entrepreneurs and inventors who revolutionized modern business", and who appreciate having what amounts to a frame-of-reference within which to understand current and future developments. Also, Young's book will suggest additional readings such as full-length biographies of the major "characters" in the "tales" he has told so well.

Perfect for the Aspiring Filmaker!
From the point of a young high school aged aspiring filmaker- this book is a total success! It is perfect for any girl looking for fun on a rainy day or a film career in her future. Its full of creative, colorful, and informative pages that are bound to inspire any young Girl Director!!

Fun and Informative
Andrea does a great job of simplifiying the world of film making. A+!

What every Girl (and boy) needs!
FILLED with information and presented in a fun and entertaining book. Great interviews and profiles on women directors. The most interesting part to me is how much women were involved in the early days of film. As a filmmaker myself, I appreciate the "how to" details which are presented in an easy to understand manner. Great descriptions of all the basics of how to make your first film - or your second film. Photos and illustrations will help the kids enjoy it....

Almost without flaws
A very powerful, true-to-life book about the world teenagers live in. This is such a good read. It's insightful, thought-provoking, humorous, grim, and well-written. One book for adolescents that should definitely not be overlooked. I'm glad I discovered it when I was still in my teens.

Pleased Princess
Princess Ashley is an amazing book. I chose to read this book because I thought it would be an easy book to relate to, and it is. This book follows a young girl who moves to a new place and begins highscool. She becomes into the popular group with Ashley. My favorite charater is Chelsea because she is just a normal girl trying to fit in. I think that the best part of Princess Ashley was when Chelsea and her boyfriend, Pod, dress up as hippies and go to a party. I would reccomend this book to any tennager because you can really relate.

Very Realistic
This is one of only a few books about high school kids that I really related to when I was in high school myself. The characters are so real and multidimensional. You see how shallow and immature golden girl Ashley really is, yet you also realize she has problems that make you just a little more sympathetic, and you're even drawn by her seeming worldiness and sophistication just enough to understand narrator Chelsea's admiration for her. Didn't we all wish at one time or another that we could be part of the In Crowd? Chelsea herself is a wonderfully realistic teenager, and her character is extremely well developed as we follow her through high school. Her relationship with her mother is very true to life, and progresses believably as Chelsea matures. And Pod is probably the most loveable, interesting high school boy I've ever come across in young adult fiction. This is one of those books that I've saved since I was a teenager and re-read once a year or so. This book in particular is a real blast from my past as it was published when I was in high school and makes references to things that were big then (Molly Ringwald, Sheila E singing "The Glamourous Life"). Though those things may make it a bit dated, the storyline and characters are sure to appeal to young adults today.

Even Slayers Make Mistakes
This trade paperback presents a serial story that originally appeared in issues 21 through 25 of the BTVS comics. Officially it occurs at the end of the third season, but is more of a bridge into season four, presenting Buffy as a new freshman in college, desperately trying to balance the pressures of real scholastic work with her night job - slaying. When an old, scary legend of 'Mad Jack' comes back to life, Buffy over-reacts and kills the first suspect demon without a thorough investigation. The result is a major crisis when it turns out that Mad Jack was just the guardian over something much worse.

Originally released during the Roman conquest of Carthage, Ky-Laag is major badness. He was only brought under control at that time by the wiles of Vraka, another demon, who led a cult called 'The Blood of Carthage.' Several thousand years later Buffy has let the rabbit out of the hate, and Vraka heads for Sunnydale to try to stop Ky-Laag and, in his spare time, kill the offending slayer. Buffy feels the same way about Vraka, but, if they don't work something out, they will be dead and the rest of us will be worshipping Ky-Laag.

One of the other key story arcs is Willow's need for emancipation from a Xander who still treats her like a childhood sidekick. As a young woman with significant magical and intellectual skills this has become more than a little irritating. In a series of flashbacks we see the developing relationship between the two as children. One in which Xander often took the lead. The other piece of history is a series of pieces about Vraka and reason for his bad feelings towards Spike. It should be no surprise that these do not paint the vampire with a chip in his head in a very good light.

One has to think of 'The Blood of Carthage' as more than a trade paperback rehashing the contents of a series of comic books. The story itself is larger than its media, and the trade paperback or graphic novel suits it best. Part of this is due to the efforts of Christopher Golden as writer, and the rest is due to editor Scott Allie's decision to deviate from the story telling style in the previous comic series - 'Bad Blood.' This is not intended to be a criticism of Andi Watson's rambling nine-issue series. Instead, Allie decided it was time for a change of pace and then turned to Golden, a proven Buffy novelist, to implement the idea.

Golden's story line is structured much like a novel, with a focused major story arc and rising levels of complexity and intensity. To break up the pacing a bit we are treated with flashbacks to Willow's childhood with Xander and Spike's first encounter with Vraka. Another thing that makes this series special is the carefully managed creative artwork. While Cliff Richards is the artist for the main story, Chynna Clugston-Major and the team of Paul Lee and Brian Horton each get one of the flashback series. This is cleverly orchestrated to provide different moods and contexts. The art really is excellent, and a separate article on what went into it is included in this volume.

If you have been wondering which trade paperback to buy first, this should be high on your list.

Xander and Willow flashbacks. . .a great trade!
I think this trade has issues 21-25 of the series, I can't be sure but the info I got is from the Dark Horse comics website. The issues aren't sectioned in the trade (the blood of carthage), they run together to form a really good story with rather good artwork. We even get to see Xander and Willow as kids! Its a good stand alone trade, I really recommend it. Spike and Dru make an appearance and Giles makes scones! The coolest thing about the trade is the Xander/Willow storyline because it really examines their relationship and who is the sidekick (or not). Christopher Golden is a great Buffy writer, I suggest you pick this one up.

A bloody good read
The only problem with this excellent graphic novel is that it isn't a full length book. A plot so complex and characters so rich they deserve 300 pages. Christopher Golden never disappoints.

The art work is exciting and colorful. I think the actors are well drawn. Their voices are true.

Set in the fourth season, Buffy is at college. The pressures weigh heavy on her slayer duties. When she kills the wrong demon all Hell breaks loose which forces deadly enemies to work together. I recommend this to all Buffy fans

Everything in one story!
This is a coming-of-age story of a young man who is lost in the idealism of the early 60's, and having lived the era, I feel the pathos of this character, as well as the humor in the life he leads. The protagonist Walter Marshall,is nineteen years old, innocent,a devoted Catholic with a reverence for his struggling mom, a deep patriotism, and a lingering insecurity about his place in the world. The book is laced with great, laugh-out-loud humor. The characters are rich and believable. And the book has a very surprising ending. And believe it or not, some of us really were that innocent back in those days! This was a nostalgic look back for me. But this book is an enjoyable way to transport yourself to the uncertainties of this era if you weren't around to experience them. Get it, and enjoy!

a great novel
I had to read this novel for my Us History class, and I'm not the most interested reader when I have to force something upon me to read. My teacher gave us a choice of about 30 books and as I read the brief synopsises of the books she said that this book had humor, love story, and about a man who was just learning about himself in the early 60's. My teacher seemed to enjoy it and so I said what they hey! I read the book and it just took me with this poor young 19 year old kid who was not sure what he's doing but he was doing it quite fast and was just trying to please everyoen in the process. Just to see was transpired it was so interesting and I couldn't put it down. The funniest parts I thought were when he was in confession with the priests. I really recommend this book to anyone! I'm reading another one of his books because I was so impressed but his style of writing I had to read more! I'm reading "In The Night Season" so far so good! This is just one of the many books I've read this past year that I chose that have been so good. I just feel I'm on some type of streak! Hah!

Bausch's best gets better
This novel mixes an innocent protagonist, an older and socially-inept girlfriend, organized crime, radio personalities, and "love at first sight" to become one of the funniest books I've ever read. In the tradition of his story, "Aren't You Happy For Me?" Bausch really throws the reader a curveball.

The hero wants to grow up to be President. In the meantime, he's taking radio broadcast classes at the local community college while trying to make time with an attractive German student. The hero's girlfriend is a wealthy girl, slightly older than him, overbearing and obtuse and totally insensitive. When Our Hero's school gets into trouble with the local loan shark, he steps in to save the day. This novel was my introduction to Bausch and still my favorite of his long fiction. Read it.

A good book on an intriguing woman
I was glad to see that this book was about Tituba and her life instead of just about the Salem Witch Trials. She had a life before and after that tragedy, and the author has made that life one that kept me interested until the end. I probably didn't need all the references to penises, but I did enjoy reading about a life so different from mine. I liked Tituba very much as presented by this author. I think Americans need to read more international literature for the exposure to other cultures, and this book is a good place to start. Even though she was from Barbardos, Tituba is a woman, and I share that bond with her. I liked the way she doubted, but never completely lost faith in her fellow human beings. I've been to Salem, and what the author says is true: Tituba as a real person has really been forgotten. This book reveals her, finally.

Voodoo statred the Salem Witch hunt!!
It wasn't a European Witch that started the Witch-hunts in Salem; in fact it was a young Barbados Voodoo Practitioner. And although Tituba was no Voodoo Queen such as Marie Laveau, Tituba's life was just as interesting. This is a good read.

Fanatastic book!
I bought this book years ago at in the gift shop of The Witch Museum in Salem, MA. Never got around to reading it until now...I can't believe I waited so long! I've only started reading it, but the first 5 chapters alone have been superb. Highly recommended!
