World Fire: The Culture of Fire on Earth
Published in Hardcover by Pubs Overstock (1995)

Average review score:
seminal overview of the anthroprogenic use of fire by man.
This book caused me to think of the totality of the sciences blindly lurching forward to stuydy the effects of 40,000 years of unrestrained fire use while that use changes.

A must-have in France
On a recent trip to Paris, my father-in-law brought along the dictionary part of this book. A bit excessive, I had thought. However, we used it in just about every restaurant we visited - French, Moroccan, Vietnamese, you name it. It defines every imaginable food and preparation type. The English to French translation is not quite as complete, but it doesn't diminish the book's value. Well worth the money and the trouble carrying it (at least the dictionary section). I'm buying this one and the Italian one for myself.
World Hypotheses a Study in Evidence
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (1970)
Amazon base price: $21.95
Average review score:
A sophisticated but very readable primer in epistemology.
At the core of most any deep inquiry, one finds epistemology, questions about how one knows and what one can know. Pepper deeply penetrates the mysteries of epistemology. Having taken an undergraduate degree in philosophy, I can certify that he has successfully distilled the essence of such a degree in 348 very readable pages. If you don't have time to read Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hegel, and William James (all of whom I highly recommend), read World Hypotheses. Pepper lucidly communicates the basic world view of these and many other important philosophers.

A Refreshing Change
Academic anthologies of world literature often cater to the professoriate in English departments who only have a passing knowledge of non-western literature. As a result, many collections of world literature are, in fact, collections of European literary classics, thereby allowing professors to simply walk through lower division classes without having to do much work. _A World of Literature_, however, places non-Western literature at the core of the collection, allowing teachers and students to really challenge themselves in the enjoyment of global perspectives. The works selected for inclusion are generally canonical within their cultural contexts and are made comprehensible by the fine introductions.

A Must Read.
Unlike most other college textbooks, Spiegel's book treats the student of IR with respect and dignity. If it weren't for this work, my international relations coursework would have been a complete waste of time. Let's get Spiegel out there training his fellow colleagues on how to teach IR with passion and deep insight. Should be required reading in universities across the country and, indeed, the world.

More Light Reading at Its Best
This is a collection of 16 stories drawn from American Heritage magazine. The writing is crisp and descriptive. The authors are all top-rate and include the likes of Stephen Ambrose, Martin Blumenson, John Lukacs, and Stephen Sears himself, to mention a few. The stories describe some of the key moments in the war, spanning all theaters and all mediums. Informative and penetrating, each story is easily read in one sitting, even if you're a slow reader like me, which makes it an excellent book for casual reading.

web of mind
a beautifully designed and arranged collection of articles that expose the intelligent and creative uses of psychoactive chemicals.
While the "spiritual purists" may balk at the contention that chemicals seriously open up levels of consciousness and awareness, one comes away with deeper appreciation of various traditional methods of enlightenment (with and without chemicals).
This work effectively counteracts the anti-drug propaganda that has shamefully denigrated certainly respectable uses of treasured substances.
Zig Zag Zen does the universe proud.

This book is about Ice Ages, from the Pre-Cambrian to the present. Although some of the text is outdated, such things as the Atlantic conveyer current not yet having been theorized when this text was published, I wouldn't be surprised if it is still regarded as a valuable instruction tool.
Brian John should be commended for having compiled an easily read, yet encyclopedic, text of all relevant aspects of this area of science as of 1979. The photgraphs, although in black and white format, excellently depict the concepts being discussed. Some are classics.
The book's remarks about the dissolution of the latest Quaternary ice sheets remain timely in light of the current controversy over the status of the West Antarctic Ice sheet and its ice shelves. Equally of great value are the discussions and photos concerning the formation of such post-glacial features as outwash plains, (sandur), eskers, kames, and roche moutonees.
I highly recommend this book to any student of glaciology or Ice Ages. Indeed, I do not believe a library on such matters without this book is complete.
