Photographic powerhouse!
A very considered study of the men and machines that made the Mustang a household name. The beautifully presented book is basically 20 biographies of Mustang Aces and illustrates their combat careers with fantastic archive pictures and a great biography by Stephen Grey. The concept is then bound together by John Dibbs' amazing color photography of authentically painted surviving P-51's of those Aces. This volume would be truely appreciated by historians and aviation buffs alike but also makes a great coffee table piece as it's visually stunning - a great gift.

A must have for serious MIC users
A very well done book. It has many examples, with ample screen shots, of useful techniques.

I have used MIC for almost 2 years now, I'm an active participant in the MIC newsgroup, but even I learned a lot of new techniques from this book.

Tait and Sagman show how to use a very powerful tool, MIC, and make it deliver in very practical ways; with a short learning curve to boot!

With MIC, this book, and a little time invested, anyone can turn out professional caliber work for the web that will rival almost anything the other image programs can produce - all at a lower investment in money and time.

The Origins of Major War (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs)
Published in Hardcover by Cornell Univ Pr (2000)
Authors: Dale C. Copeland and Stephen M. Walt
Amazon base price: $52.50
Average review score:

A Significant Addition To Understanding the Causes of War
Dale Copeland's work represents a huge step forward in understanding why major wars occur. The debates over the origins of war have focused on whether or not the system is bipolar or multipolar, on the role of alliances in drawing states into war, on states trying to dominate the system, and other variables as well. Copeland has finally put all these differing views together into one coherent theory, adding a major causal mechanism: States' views of future power trends. States are most likely to start a major when when they see themselves in decline in relation to another state. They initiate a war to protect themselves from that growing states' threat to them in the near future. This theory explain why alliance do not really drag states into war, and why the number of poles is important, but not the determining factor. Bipolarity is more seen as more likely to lead to war, since a state must be willing to take on the entire system to succeed in a multipolar system, whereas it need only defeat one adversary in a bipolar world. Copeland backs up his theory with copious historical evidence, which seems to fit his theory. Furthermore, he breaks new ground in his empirical explanations. Historians will no doubt be intrigued by his contention that Germany deliberatly initiated the hostilities in World War One to defeat the rising Russian menace. He explains the Second World War in similiar terms. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he looks at pre-modern historical cases as well, dating back to Ancient Greece through the Napoleanic era. Finally, this book is very readable. Academic writing tends to be cluttered with jargon and in generally is very difficult to read. This book is not. Copeland writes with an easy style that is a pleasure to read. This is one of the few academic books that can be read by people in the field, and by those who are just interested in the question Copeland tries to answer. Highly recommended for everyone!

Excellent Introduction to the Field of Psychology
I had this book as a textbook for my intro to psych class. It is a well written text. Unlike most textbooks, it is not dry or boring. This book uses examples for it's concepts, such as Tiger Wood's golf game and Alice in Wonderland. It also has diagrams, definitions, graphs, tables, and mini-experiments to back up and sum up the text. In short, it is set up well for any type of learner. The text covers many areas of psychology, including the history, the brain, sense and perception, consciousness, learning, emotion, and disorders. I would definitely recommend it for a class or an ambitious solo reader.

Exquisite pictures and text
Anyone interested in the history of Japan by a Western writer should be familiar with the works of Cambridge educated Stephen Turnbull. Having read four of his books on Japanese history I can testify to the clarity and detail he puts into his writing. This book is no exception. The book is about the daimyo, the elite of the samurai who in turn were the elite of the military. So what Turnbull does is give a detailed account of the creme de la creme of the samurai class. Although the book can be a bit tedious for the novice Japanese historian it is complimented by wonderful illustrations, colorful plates by James Field and photographs of exquisite beauty. There is much to see in this book if the details of the military structure get too complicated. It helps to have a basic understanding of the historical periods dicussed, but not essential as Turnbull makes the information easy to understand. He covers two periods, the Sengoku Period(think feudal Japan) and the Edo Period which was the three centuries of peace that followed. The foundation was created for the daimyo during the age of war and carried over into the folowing period that was by contrast almost marked by the total absence of war. The code of conduct and honour of a samuarai, or bushido, is discussed as well as the various relationships to all parts of society. Turnball makes a correlation to the present and shows how allegiance to a group, in this case modern industry, and a leader are part of self- sacrifice for the good of the country. The plates, drawings, photographs and woodcuts are fascinating and spellbinding material for students of Japnese history. While teaching a class I used some of the plates to compliment the subject and found that students were totally captivated by the often graphic nature of the violent war scenes. One plate in particular was inspired by the fabulous film by Kurosawa entitled Ran, where the defeated warlords family commits suicide in a blazing castle. This is an excellent source book for anyone interested in the hisory of Japan, samurai or more specifically, the daimyo. Recommended for teachers and students alike, this book is worth seeking out if this subject interests you, there are few if any better authorites in this field.
