Facing Fearful Odds: The Siege of Wake Island

The book is better than the movie
I found this book from a HISTORY TV channel story featuring the author. As a baby-boomer I saw the movie WAKE ISLAND several times, but didn't realize it was made before any of the actual participants had returned from the POW camps. There is more Hollywood fiction in the movie than historical fact. But that's show business. The author covers in great detail the actions by major commands, individuals and everybody in-between. Considering how badly Wake was prepared to defend itself, the Marines did a great job for two weeks holding off superior forces. If only there had been more construction effort put into beach defense and airplane protection before Dec 7th. The Japanese underestimated the resistance in their first landing attempt. I was also surprised how close US forces came to rescuing the defenders, but were called off at the last moment. This a great book for Marine fans of WWII.

Great Account of heroics!
This book is an instant classic! I enjoyed reading this massive book cover to cover. The title "facing fearful odds" is an apt title. The quick change from peace to war trapped these brave men on an island that would become a symbol for the war in the pacific. The book reads well, and tells the tales of the civilians who stayed behind to defend Wake. The fact that they were so close to relief, and held out for so long is a testament to the warrior spirit. A must read!!!!

The Definitive Work
Since my father was a .50 captain on the island and I was with the 5th Marines in VN, I have read every work out on Wake Island. This author not only interviewed survivors but did massive research work tying in the Japanese situation and strategy with the situation on Wake Island and the strategies and reactions of Washington and Pearl Harbor, where Wake Island received its orders. He covers the air, naval, artillery and infantry actions and the personalities and historical disagreements of the participants. He speculates on alternative possibilities thoughtfully. I doubt, with the participants dying off so quickly now, that this book will ever be topped as the definitive work on the battle for wake island and he does a good job on the captivity time as well.

Simply outta this world! WOW!
I just finished A Tangled Web and I feel dumbfounded at the judicial system. I read this mostly during my lunch breaks at work and found it most difficult to quit reading after my hour. I just had to finish it today!

Mr. Lions paints an awesome picture with his words and I could see every person, place and thing he described. He took me into a world of S&M that I dare not go; a lifestyle I dare not try.

It's difficult to believe that the law can be so narrow minded---and I worked in court, too! Why are so many innocent people found guilty of crimes? This in itself is an unspeakable crime. The attorneys who adequately do their jobs, allegedly doing their research and background checks on the details of the crime--quit believing the "Cry Wolf" stories!

The prosecutor in this case, Lydia Foster, didn't work with her detective, Vinnie Leone. She, as Prosecutor, chose to ignore all his warnings that Oleg was innocent. WAKE UP!

It's time we take a stand as Mr. Lions did and not be so quick to judge others but find out the facts.

Greg, I can't wait for your next book! You are outta this world!

Exquisite Torture
My beau read "A Tangled Web" to me, a chapter each night, as a bedtime story - a delightfully decadent way to be drawn into Mr. Lions' world of the NYC S&M subculture. It was agonizing to wait for each subsequent installment as we delved deeper and deeper into Oleg, Emily, and Lucien's love triangle.
Gregory Lions has certainly done his homework and knows his subject matter intimately. His ability to craft believable characters in engaging situations is evident. I'm anxiously awaiting his next offering. I can't wait to see where next he'll take me!
This novel is not for the faint of heart. The exploration of dominant/submissive relationships is a real eye-opener. A great beach read...if you can wait 'til summer. I surely couldn't!

A book I got tangled up in!
I am not used to reviewing books with such graphic detail, but in this case I must say that this detail is what captivated me from the start. It is intriguing to even the most any adult despite the sexual content. What impressed me the most was Mr. Lion's ability to portray not only the seedy side of life in great detail but a real and very explicit story line as well. Beyond fantasy is reality and the author is so talented as he brings to life the many faces behind the story line. The emotions and behaviour of sexual deviation yet completely portrays the characters of real life and the actions, emotions, consequences, and true to life behaviour of the false accused right down to the driving power of the self evolved and vengeful.

I can't wait to see what Mr. Lion's has in store for us in future books. I could put 'A Tangled Web' down and shared it with friends.

However this book is not for the shy, faint of heart or prudish.

A Touching Reminder Of A Day That United All Of America....
Where were YOU on the morning of September 11th, 2001? I was at work when Howard Stern reported that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Having been born and raised in The Bronx before moving to Rochester, N.Y., my workday immediately ended as I focused my full attention on Howard's show; He became my only link to the city I loved and would always call home. Later on came the TV reports and the images that will never leave my mind, but for those first few hours, I sat listening in shock as the man who makes me laugh every workday became my only connection to family, friends, and loved ones who were suddenly living in a war-zone.

9-11: Emergency Relief is a benefit book that is filled with true stories from September 11th. They range from touching, to infuriating, to thought-provoking, and the list of creators reads like a who's who of Indy Comics: James Kochalka, Will Eisner, Tony Millionaire, Harvey Pekar, Tom Hart, Joyce Brabner, Ted Rall, and literally DOZENS of others. Besides being entertaining, and raising money for the Red Cross, the book fulfills another important purpose: It stands as a reminder of a day we must NEVER forget. God Bless America!

Amazing, dense and horrifying
Easily the best of the comics industry's myriad responses to the tragedy of September 11th, this book gets down into the nitty-gritty of human experiences and reactions to tragedy. No superheroes. No larger-than-life expostulation. Just real people - talented artists - telling amazing stories. Higlights include Gregory Benton's "Treasure," an untitled Hutch Owen story by Tom Hart that manages to toe the fine line between rage and sentiment and "Citadel Of The Night" by K. Thor Jensen and Chris Knowle. Honestly, though, the book is so full of great material that nobody should be without it.

Every community library in the country should acquire a copy
After the September 11th terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, some 50 graphic novelists and cartoonist ranging from such legendary names as Will Eisner and Harvey Pekar, to newer talents such as Frank Cho and James Kochalka, came together in a very special project as a way of expressing their grief, patriotism, and support of the American people in the face of naked, lethal, ideologically driven aggression. The result is 9-11: Emergency Relief, a powerful graphic novel. The proceeds will go to benefit the American Red Cross. Simply put, every school and every community library in the country should acquire a copy of 9-11: Emergency Relief for the edification of their students and their patrons.

A Classic Romance
Bitterleaf is one of the best romance books ever written. I read this book over 10 years ago and found myself re-reading it over and over again. The pages became worn and the book cover was tattered. Unfortunately, I lost this book and have never found it again. I highly recommend it to readers who value a clever plot and great DIALOGUE about adults (not 18-year old girls) who truly explore together the meaning of love and their own lives. The sexually explicit scenes are well written and erotic enough to keep you turning page after page until you get to the end. I guarantee that once you read the last page, you'll want to read it again!

Simply unforgetable!
This book stands the test of time. About 12 years ago, I read it several times over and over again and loved it more with every read. I would love to read it over and again several times more. I loved it so much that I recommended it and loaned it to friends and acquaintances... and that's where I made my mistake. I loaned it out so many times that I lost track of who had it and I never got it back. It's the best romance book I've ever read and I really hope that I can get my hands on a brand new reprint. As soon as you've finished reading it you'll feel like rereading it all over again.

Wonderful!
One of the best books I've read-smart, sensitive and sexy, with honest situations and characters, and truly affecting situations. I'm desperate for a sequel!

A wonderful book.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It's very well written, and while reading it, I wished it'd go on forever. Frye was a remarkable actor, and deserved a better fate. So sad his life and career was cut short. (Shouldn't someone film this story ?.) I highly recommend the book, not just to Horror fans.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST BIOGRAPHY
I have been a HUGE fan of Univrsal Horror since I was a small child. I am more a fan of Dwight Frye. He has for a long time been considered the more neglected actor of Universal Horror, after I have read all the books that contain facts about him, seen all the card sets of him,and seen all the the movies, I think he has earned his way into being considered one of the big name actors. This great biography tells all about this great man and his now famous carear.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!
I TELL YA, IVE BEEN TO HOLLYWOOD MANY A TIME AND STOOD IN THE SPOT WHERE HE DIED AND HONESTLY, IT GIVES YOU A WEIRD FEELING. MAYBE THATS BECAUSE HE HAD SUCH AN IMPACT ON PERFECT STRANGERS LIKE ME. I AM SO GLAD THIS BOOK CAME OUT SO I COULD LEARN MORE ABOUT ULTRA-COOL DWIGHT!

Earthquake at Dawn
Published in Paperback by Gulliver Books Paperbacks (01 September, 2003)
Author: Kristiana Gregory
Amazon base price: $5.95
Average review score:

Earthquake at Dawn
Kristiana Gregory really brings out Edith Irvine as a devoted photographer. Even in the midst of all the turmoil, she snaps 60 photos, possibly more! In this true-to-life novel, the famous San Francisco earthquake takes place, however, the quake is not the worst that happens! The fire that the quake created was. It lasted three days and killed an estimated five to ten thousand people. The mayor exploded dynamite to try to get rid of the fire, but the dynamite only created more. This novel also illustrates the annoying floor length dresses that the ladies of 1906 had to wear and the automobiles of Daisy's time. In some books earthquakes are made up just for entertainment. Not this one! This earthquake was real. The first shock was on April 18, 1906 and was recorded at 5:12:05 a.m. and it lasted for 45 seconds. There were 27 earthquakes that were actually recorded that day. Mary Exa Atkins Campbell told the earthquake's story.

An excellent historical fiction book
I really enjoyed the book Earthquake at Dawn. It's about the 1906 San Fransisco earthquake/fire that happened at dawn (hence the name Earthquake at Dawn). Even though it is historical fiction, it had a lot of true things that made it incredibly believable. Kristina Gregory definitely made the story good by adding some subplots that kept your interest. The subplots were real things too, like Edith and Daisy getting separated from their father, and Molly dying of lack of healthcare. This was a really good, captivating book which I think many people will cherish for years to come.

A book I couldn't put down
This was an excellent book. I choose to read it for my summer book reports that I have to do and most of the time I dread reading the books but not this. I also usually have no trouble putting books down but I couldn't put this one down. The book is about Edith and her assisant Daisy who are going to Europe but stop in San Francisco and they get stuck there because of an earthquake. They meet a lot of people and have some adventures while trying to find Edith's father

Good book of 3DS4 !!!
I start learning 3DS4 using this book and I found it very easy to understand. Anybody who want to learn 3DS should buy it.

Great book for all skill levels
This book is outstanding to learn and to enhance one's knowledge of 3DS4. It is fun to read, and is really quite a page-turner! It is structured so that it holds your attention - i.e. it doesn't linger for 50 pages on one topic and mention another in passing.

It starts with the basics and moves logically to advanced topics, all while using easy-to-follow tutorials. The CDROM comes with some nice textures that are good for making your own scenes.

Plus, in an appendix, it reviews most of the popular IPAS plugins for 3D Studio R4. This reference is useful to determine what software to spend your money on.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE learning 3ds4!

The 3D Studio r4 book
This is the best book of 3D Studio r4, in a couple of weeks you can learn almost everithing, starting with modeling, texturing, animating and scripting.

the BEST parenting book out there!!!
This book is my parenting BIBLE!! I can't say enough good things about it--each and every chapter is INVALUABLE. I am so glad I found something that can help me figure out how to handle my kids at every bend in the road, in virtually every situation. It advocates attachment parenting and loving-guidance discipline, and also gives you a plethora of techniques and tells exactly when and how to use them (i.e. "everyday discipline" vs. bigger, more stubborn issues). He clarified the reality that family life is not just a mundane distraction--a family should have goals, a vision of where they are going in life, etc. He talks extensively about how all family members must have a solid rapport between them for discipline to be effective, for love to be felt, etc. He clarifies the question of spanking from both a spiritual and a scientific perspective. He goes into detail about how to handle the various stages of childhood, from loving the infant to "taming" the toddler to handling the teenager--gracefully. He outlines how to foster virtues, morals, a love for religion and a love for Jesus in your children; he tells how to make your family into the "domestic church" Pope John Paul calls it to be. I wouldn't even waste time with any other parenting or discipline book--this one more than covers all your questions and worries. I refer to it at least once a week, and it gives me the guidance I need to be an effective yet loving parent to my kids. It wil literally change your outlook on family life; it will give you new hope and make parenting a truly gratifying experience. The title couldn't be more appropriate--now I really have the information I need to raise "perfect" kids! If you REALLY unconditionally love your children and want them to be the best they can be, you will be thrilled to have this book!

Should be required reading for every parent
Whether you're Catholic or not, if you are a parent you will benefit tremendously from this book. I'm a Catholic parent and I'm really thankful that someone took the time and trouble to organize the vast plethora of parenting techniques out there so that it is easy to see their place within the structure of a Catholic parenting paradigm. The author is very knowledgeable of both scripture and church doctrine and explains their relevance to raising children. The step by step techniques for dealing with the various stages of a person's maturation are excellent. He also has little quizzes that you can use to help elucidate the areas where your parent-child relationship may need help. He has a superb treatise on why spanking is not a suitable discipline technique. I can't say enough about the excellent blend of philosophy, practical application and religion that the author has put together in this book. He is an organizational genius. Read this book!

So faithful and practical!
This book is great! I love the way it integrates authentic Church teaching with really practical parenting advice. I only got it two weeks ago, and the techniques are already making a huge differences in my childrens' behavior. I really look to it on those days when I'm not sure what to do to keep things on track. I only wish I knew about it sooner! I know what I'm giving as gifts to my mother's support group. Thanks for this great resource.

WOW!!
Out of the several dozen new books which I read in the course of a year, there are always two or three which make me sit back and reconsider everything that I have learned before. Thus far this year the only book that has done this for me has been Dr. Gregory Neal's incredible volume: "Grace Upon Grace."

I bought it on the suggestion of a friend, and I quickly found why she loved it so. Dr. Neal's simple, straightforward approach to complex theology is a breath of fresh air. He is largely unconcerned with trying to impress his readers with a vast vocabulary of difficult words, but rather focuses on explaining the field of Sacramental Theology in ways which make the subject come alive for the average Christian reader. Rare is the book which can do this, and Grace Upon Grace does it better than most.

For the simple beauty of the written word, Dr. Neal's book should be commended. For an excellent, theologically and Biblically sound study on the nature of Baptism, Communion, and the other Means of Grace, this book cannot be beat. If you're a Methodist, you MUST read this book. If you're any kind of catholic Christian, this book will help you greatly. Even if you're from the non-Sacramental tradition, you'll learn a LOT about why you think the way you do from reading this book.

Challenging
Dr. Neal's book covers the narrow branch of Christian studies known as Sacramental Theology from a protestant/catholic perspective. Any Methodist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, or Presbyterian will really love this book, and if you're a preacher in any of these denominations this book is a must-buy. Baptists and other non-sacramental Christians, however, will probably be challeneged by this book. Buy it only if you are ready and willing to have your preconceptions blown and your mind changed. I'm an American Baptist preacher and I'm still dealing with the BIG changes in thinking that Dr. Neal has challenged me to make. I'm not sure I agree with everything he has written, but I was amazed at how MUCH I found I simply could not refute.

Most theologians can't write a reasonable sentence to save their life, but Dr. Neal is a wonderful exception to this unfortnate truth. On the readability scale "Grace Upon Grace" ranks very high -- it is one of the best-written theological texts I've ever read, and should be fully understandable to the average Christian. In his preface Dr. Neal tells us that he wrote this book pretty much for the common man and woman; and he succeeded. He writes a great deal like he preaches, which is obvious when one listens to his audio sermons website. His stories, biblical interpretations, and theological discussions will all "preach," and in this way this book is useful to active preachers who are looking for new ways of communicating the concepts of Grace and the ordinances.

However, be warned: this book is not "lite devotional reading." If you're looking for simple ideas or concepts, look elsewhere. If you don't mind having your mind expanded, buy "Grace Upon Grace."

Brilliant
Prior to reading this book I had never given much thought to how I believed Grace to function in my life or in the lives or Christians. Neither had I ever connected the rituals of Baptism and the Lord's Supper with the idea of receiving God's Grace. This shouldn't be surprising, since I come from a Christian-tradition that Dr. Neal would call "Ordinance" in approach. However, after going on a Walk to Emmaus and experincing the love of Christ Jesus in Christans of many different denominations, and after hearing about the term "Means of Grace," I just had too find out more.

How shocked was I to discover that, after 30 years in the ministry, there was a whole field of Biblical Theology that I hadn't even noticed before! Dr. Neal's book, Grace Upon Grace, opened up this area of Biblical Study and Theology to me in a way that was both compelling and immediately agreeable. I wasn't sure what I was going to find when I began reading, and I must admit to never having read or known much about what Methodist, Anglicans, and Catholics believe about the Ordinances, but the discovery was well worth the time and effort. I was shocked to find a deep Biblical basis for Dr. Neal's Sacramental approach, and the more I read the more I found I which I could accept.

This book is DEEP, Biblical Theology for the pastor and the teacher and the curious Christian. If you're ready to have your understandings changed regarding how Grace functions and is received in the Chritian life, read this book.

Excellent
The only reason I can't give this book five stars is that the deus ex machina ending was disappointing. Perhaps the communications from beings that live in stars and the existence of a hidden ship that just happens to be awaiting the arrival of our hero wouldn't have seemed so left-field if I had known that this was the third book of a series when I began it. I presume that these are plot elements left over from the first two books. Isn't there some way to let the reader know that before he begins reading?

At any rate, I plan to go back and read the prior books before forging ahead. It looks like I still have a lot of great reading ahead of me!

Bottom of The Ten Best SF Books Ever!
Great Sky River's Genre involves Humanity's last group of survivalist set out against droids. If you ever seen The Matrix this book is for you! Benford gives a :-( description of the survivalists such as: they didn't know what a year meant and that it was basicly irrelevant for their situation.

Great Sky River is Probaly somwhere 7-10 on Best SF books that I have read.

Try reading Asimov's books; Greg Bear; DAvid Brin.

Hardcore SF the way its meant to be
I've got a list of books that I consider the best in the genre. Great Sky River is definitely one of those. The plot is complex and involving, the characters real and thought-provoking, the science totally mind-numbing. If you like Brin and Niven, then find a copy of this one. You won't regret it!
