FINALLY, Someone who can teach public speaking!
As a college instructor of oral communication for ten years, I complained bitterly about the poor selection of books for beginning students--until now. This is the single best book of its kind on the market, bar none. In all my years, I've never had students brag on a book like this one: easy to read, well-organized, thoughtful, practical, visually attractive, and substantive. My best compliment is that I can teach three times the material in half the time just by using this text--and people understand it! I can't brag enough on the author's work. This is phenomenal. ANYONE who wants to master the basics of public speaking should read this cover to cover. The principles and techniques Mr. Gregory describes are effective, powerful, and described in a simple way. BRAVO! I'll recommend this to everyone.

VERY GOOD!
I'm a student at a local college here in Jersey City. I found this book very easy to read but doesn't defeat the purpose to inform. I really wish I can have him as my teacher.

THANKS HAMILTON!

There's no excuse not to buy this book!
I agree with Bill Murray (in the Editorial Reviews section) that not enough people will read this book. It is priced moderately enough that there should be no excuse for any collector not to buy one. As one who collects both coins and banknotes, I find very often too much emphasis is given to coins; very little to banknotes. Fortunately, the book does not omit banknotes. (Just a prejudice of mine!).

Numismatic Book of the Year
My name is Lee Martin and I am the founder of the Numismatic Literary Guild. I have been privileged to review many books and usually they are most satisfactory, however few are regarded by me as N.L.G. Book of the Year material. This book, in my view, merits that thought. It is for everyone in numismatics and is even a "must have" for those who may become heirs, but lack the know-how of what to do next. Senior citizens, like myself, will be especially happy with the interesting stories of estates, etc. I had intended to just scan the book but it was so interesting I stayed with it until I had read it all. EVERYONE should own it if coins are involved in their activities. I highly recommend this book and wish to congratulate all involved in its production.

Must Reading for every collector!!
A wealth of sound and practical information, written in a clear and concise manner. Leroy Van Allen, numismatic author

Couldn't put it down
I just read this book over the weekend. I should say I read this book on Saturday. I could not put it down. This is the second Jill Gregory book I have read. The first was Never Love A Cowboy. I liked both books but this one really caught and kept my interest. It had all of the elements, Love/Hate relationship, romance, intrigue, suspense. I didn't want it to end. The only thing I would have liked to have seen differently is if they would have elaborated on the other characters in the book.

Very Entertaining
I loved this book. I have loved all of Jill Gregory's books and this was no exception. I thought the chemistry between all the characters was well written. There was alot of humor, suspense and sentiment. It was the perfect length, I could not put it down until it was done. The relationship between Caitlin and Wade was excellent and very romantic. It made me want to be a part of the story. All in all it was a great rea

Excellent cowboy romance
In the 1880s, Philadelphia debutante Caitlin Summers travels to Hope, Wyoming, hometown of her recently deceased father Reese to claim her inheritance. Nearly broke, the desperate Caitlin plans to sell her dad's beloved Cloud Ranch that means almost nothing to the Easterner. The ranch foreman, Wade Barclay worshipped Reese, who took him and his two siblings into his home and heart when their parents died in 1867 and raised the trio. In homage to his mentor, Wade will insure Reese's wishes are fulfilled even if it means forcing Caitlin to remain at the ranch for one year as stated in the will.

Reese believes Caitlin is a spoiled brat who deserted her father and his love. Caitlin thinks Reese is a barbarian, but is jealous of the love her father showered on Reese and his two siblings. Neither one expected to feel attraction, passion, and love for the other.

Jill Gregory and entertaining western romances are synonymous after novels like ALWAYS YOU and NEVER LOVE A COWBOY. Her latest Americana thriller, ROUGH WRANGLER, TENDER KISSES, is a tender late nineteenth century tale that pulls at the reader's heart because of the angst of the lead characters and the support of the strong secondary cast. Ms. Gregory stays with her theme that only love can break a heart and only love can mend it.

Sink Your Teeth Into This One....
So...Your waiting your turn to get on the family computer,or your watching the Oscar's (hoping this will be the year they give a nod to sci-fi/horror films,)and they're having one of those musical numbers, or worse...your cable's gone out and you have to watch Star Trek IV with commercials....what to do? Pull out your copy of "The Sci-Fi Channel Trivia Book" and have some fun!
It claims it is the Ultimate Triva Challenge, and for Sci-Fi/Horror Buffs IT IS! There are 1,000 questions to challenge you and your friends. Test your knowledge on Movies, Television, and even Comic Books. The questions are divided into those three main topics, plus a fourth called "Wormhole" which has a little bit of everything. There are point values for each question ranging from 10-50 pts. and each pt. value has about 50 questions in each. Even some the 10 pointers are quite challenging. From Movies 10 pts: What football star was the other head in the 1972 Ray Milland film "The Thing With Two Heads?" From Television 50 pts: Name the Outer Limits episode where a couple is pursued by tumbleweeds controlled by an alien intelligence. In the book you do get to pick from multiple choice answers and the actual answers are in the back (NO PEAKING). There's a bonus section in the back also, a survey of Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers on their favorit books, authors, etc.
What I really enjoyed about it is the wide variety of questions, if there's one subject your not great at, you'll get em on the next! Also you can play alone or with as many people as you want. This would make a great stocking stuffer for the sci-fi fan in your life (or for yourself).
"May the force be with you" Laurie

Not So Trivial Pursuit
The SciFi Channel has done it! They've challenged our minds and memories with simply oodles and oodles of great trivia questions. Separated into four categories (movie, television, comics and wormhole - a miscellaneous hodgepodge of questions) these questions get progressively more difficult as you move along through the chapters. The questions go from 10pts to 40pts and believe me, the 40pt questions will cause all but the most die-hard fan of the genre to run away screaming!

The only complaint I have is that looking up the answers in the back of the book is sometimes tricky since the questions are numbered 1-50 in EACH point range instead of a flat 1-200 in each category.

Another great aspect of this book, besides its potential for a great evenings fun with other sci-fi fans is the fact that it includes recommended reading lists and the lists of favorite books and movies of members of the SFFWA. Recommendation lists like this give fans a chance to cross into genres that they might never have entered without a little nudge.

A definite must-have for fans and collectors of sci-fi and it makes a great companion book to the cd-rom of the same name.

This book is cool!!!!!!!
This book is relly cool! I got a lot of the answers right on the trivia.

Seasons of Decision : A Practical Guide to Making Life's Financial and Legal Decisions
Published in Paperback by Estate Planning Press (01 June, 2000)
Author: Gregory J. Englund
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

"User-Friendly financial/legal handbook for real life"
Written in direct, conversational language, this guide helps readers from the least to most knowledgable (in fields of law and finance) plan how to manage their resources from college through retirement and beyond. A cast of prototypes shares common "real-life" scenarios: first job, first marriage, first home, starting a family, divorce, retirement, estate planning, to show how the average citizen might build and protect savings throughout these stages of life. A helpful list of websites referring to insurance, investing, social security and more is included in an Appendix at the end. A straightforward read and most handy reference for all the seasons of your life.

Excellent book
I was inspired to get a copy of Seasons of Decision after reading Susan K. O'Brien's intriguing article, "Passion without Planning Is a Myth" (go to Jobfind.com and click on Career Connections). This is not a book that has all the answers - nor does it aspire to. What this little gem does is raise the legal and financial questions that are ever-changing as we progress through the life cycle. It cleverly points us in the direction of where to look for appropriate answers. As O'Brien says, "This book is really about strategic thinking." I found it to be that and much much more.

All the Right Questions
Here's just what I needed - a comprehenseive, accessible resource to help me navigate the financial and legal questions surrounding the major life changes we all face - financing education, marriage/divorce, starting a business, providing for grandchildren and many more. Seasons of Decision avoids technical jargon and mind-numbing detail. If you want to know what questions you need to ask, and how to get help answering them, the information is here at your fingertips. It will make you feel comfortable that you aren't missing something big and important - and you can use those sections you need when you need them. The book is written in easy to understand, lay terms; my first read took just over two hours, cover to cover. It's a good resource for talking with my son who is buying his first house, or my financial planner who is helping me invest for retirement.

A challenge and an opportunity. . .
. . .for any and all members of the clergy -- regardless of their denominational affiliation.

Over the last quarter-century or so, it seems like one cannot pick up a newspaper without reading about yet another scandal by yet another member of the clergy. I firmly believe that if upon ordination/licensing, etc., the new clergyman would read this book and take it to heart, much trouble could be avoided.

Gregory the Great did not seek to become the Bishop of Rome. He did not want the post, nor did he feel himself worthy for the honor. This book was written partly as an apology as to why he did not wish for the honor -- and partly as an instruction manual as to how the clergy should behave, and how they should counsel and treat those who are in sin and/or who come to him for guidance.

Although, due to human sinfulness, the Church no longer speaks with a united voice, Christians of all backgrounds and faiths would benefit from this book. I cannot recommend this volume highly enough.

THE Classic Manual for all Ministers' Souls
Until the 20th Century, it was custormary for all newly elected bishops to receive a copy of this book, not merely as a manual of care for their flock, but as a challenge to maintain their own integrity of soul, their first love, in the pressures and temptations of ministry and its attendant power. The sad trend of financial, sexual, and other scandals that have rocked every denomination in the last 20 years could be reversed by returning to the "ancient wisdom" of requiring all ministers to read and re-read this wonderful book. Maybe you have a pastor, priest, or other spiritual leader in your life who could use a little encouragement and wisdom about "taking the plank" out of his/her own eye while they help their flock attend to the "specks"? You won't regret the price or time spent on this classic.

A scholarly translation of an excellent work.
CAUTION ALL CLERGY:

This book will make you completely aware of your own inadequacies! It will also inspire you, and demonstrate your need to rely on Jesus Christ, the Great High Priest for your strength.

I read this book in seminary -- not as a class resource or as an academic exercise, but in chapel as a spiritual discipline. It made a profound impact on my life, and has, I hope, made me a better priest.

I highly recommend it to members of the clergy or to lay leaders of any denomination.

An Excellent Children's Book
This book has become a mainstay in my children's library. I read this book to them over and over again. My 3 daughters never tire of it. The way the tale is written allows the reader to inflect his/her own creativity in delivering the story to an entranced child's ears. You can choose to sing parts of the tale, you can inflect tonality and create the dialect as you see fit, as well. Along with the wonderful, unique artwork, this book will become a classic children's tale for generations to come!

What a marvelous book!
My children sat spellbound as we read this book. We loved this story for the original plot, the strange dialect (not too heavily used), and the unusual art work.

This was a good book about a little girl and a mermaid.
I am a fifth grade student at North Hills Traditional Academy. And,yes, I like this book. I like this book because the pictures are pretty. I like this book because the words are beautiful. I like this book because it tells a sweet story. This book is for people who are caring.

very good one
simple and understandable language. was extremely helpful in my course.

The simplest book on TCP/IP
There is no doubt that apart from Douglas Comer's three-volume set, this is the best book to learn TCP/IP. Behrouz has simply created magic, with his usual liberal use of diagrams and tables to explain complex topics with ease.

I would strongly recommend this book for those who want to learn TCP/IP at a conceptual level in addition to Comer. However, if you want to go to the internals, this may not be the right book for you.

The best book on TCP/IP that I have come across.
I consider myself very fortunate to be one of the first few to have a copy of this book (draft copy that is sold at DeAnza College Bookshop). I fully recommend this book as it starts from the basics and covers all aspects of TCP/IP. I understand that the published version of this book will cover a few additional topics. I am really looking forward to reading this book. An essential book for everyone interested in TCP/IP. Also an EXCELLENT reference book.

clever la crime story ala chinatown
dunne writes well in this page turner about the cross currents among the movers and shakers in los angeles. cops, priests, businessmen and murder are all blended together in this excellent read.

much better than the movie.

A brilliant novel.
"True Confessions" wraps a first-rate murder mystery inside a complex family drama that transpires within the genteel power of the Catholic Church. The story is made memorable (and frequently hilarious) by John Gregory Dunne's chuckle-a-page expositions of Irish Catholic foibles. Lt. Tom Spellacy of the LAPD, a semi-corrupt but competent detective, jousts with his partner, his superiors in the department, and his brother, the Rt. Rev. Msr. Desmond Spellacy, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Dunne is to Irish Catholics as Philip Roth is to Eastern European Jews, and "True Confessions" is Dunne's "Goodbye Columbus"--a must-read.

Two brothers' lives affected by grisly L.A. Murder in 30's
The Spellacy Brothers: Tom, a copy and Des, a priest, find their lives and pasts entertwining amid the investigation of a grisly murder of "The Virgin Tramp." This book, based, in part on the infamous, never-solved, Black Dahlia murder in 1947 L.A., explores the byzantine and corrupt world of both the L.A. Police force and the Catholic church hierarchy. An outstanding mystery story, period piece and a true joy for anyone who knows and loves L.A. This book is also one of my spouses favorites and has been read by both of us many times. Unlike the general populace, we also loved and understood the movie which was superbly cast and shot.

An astute perspective on the life of a Union cavalryman
George Armstrong Custer's fabled Fifth Regiment fought with great distinction throughout the American civil war and suffered the third highest total of men killed in the entire Union Calvary. James Henry Avery, a 24 year old farmer from Hopkins, Michigan was on of Custer's feared "Wolverines". He eloquently described his personal war-time experiences in journals and postwar reminiscences, providing uniquely detailed descriptions of Civil War cavalry movements, and presents the only known account addressing the escape of elements of the Fifth Michigan Cavalry on the first day of the Battle of Trevilian Station. Other battles described include Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Yellow Tavern, Haws Shop, Tom's Brook, Cedar Creek, and Trevilian Station. Under Custer's Command: The Civil War Journal Of James Henry Avery provides an astute perspective on the life of a Union cavalryman in the Civil War and is a "must" for all Civil War buffs and civil war studies reference collections.

One from the Heart
As editor Eric J. Wittenberg expands his library of Custer-related works, they continue to improve on the already growing collection of first-person accounts of the "Boy General's" Michigan Cavalry. As the preeminent biographer of Brevet Brigadier General James Kidd, Wittenberg provides readers with a sense of "being there," and inescapable feeling that they are sharing a fireside chat with a living, breathing veteran of our own Civil War.

"Under Custer's Command" is sure to please any readers of his previous collections of James Kidd. The latest book, a well-preserved and edited anthology of the personal journals of Sergeant James Henry Avery, an enlisted man who served with Custer during his formative years, continues Wittenberg's efforts to detail the wartime activities of the Michigan 6th Cavalry. One of the most successful mounted commands during the war, the "Wolverine's" received far less acclaim and few of the accolades enjoyed by cavalry units led by men such as Jeb Stuart and Stonewall Jackson.

"Under Custer's Command" is a rare jewel among surviving first-person accounts. The language is frank, yet simple: the work of a man interested less in impressing than in preserving his personal observations of history. Avery's journals offer an invaluable glimpse into the mind and soul of a man fighting for his country, his values, and his family. This wonderful book is a fantastic addition to any serious Civil War Custer library.

The best memoir by an enlisted man I have seen yet....
This book is the best memoir by an enlisted cavalryman I have ever seen, and I read a lot of Civil War books. At the end of the book, I felt like I had just finished a long conversation with Avery. Buy this book and enjoy it.
