You're A Sissy If You Don't Read This Book
Another fellow managed to cover all the eloquent intellectualities, but the simple truth is that this here book is a good look at a great man. Abbey is legendary, indeed, and that's a good thing, for the stuff he defended deserves a hero and the folks he poked mercilessly with his sharp stick wit (just about about all of us, but especially money-grubbing land-rapers and the lackadaisical dogs who can't bother to oppose them) deserved the poking. Buy this book, then let it collect dust until you've read through Abbey's words to discover him for yourself.

Remembering Ed; Fact and Fantasy
Wonderful collection of essays on the general theme of who Edward Abbey was. Some of the writers include Wendell Berry, Ed's friend Jack Loeffler, Gary "Jafey Rider" Snyder, Dave Petersen and Terry Tempest Williams. From this partial list of contributors, it's obvious that this is a book full of personal observances about one of the west's most hated and best loved figures. Since his death in 1989, the legend of Ed Abbey has perhaps grown beyond manageability. The essays collected here simultaneously feed that legend, while speaking of the actual person behind the lore. This juxtaposition creates an interesting tension throughout the book, as those who knew the man grapple with the public vs. the private Abbey. Abbey himself is also called to task to reveal a bit of himself through a couple of interviews. In hopes that the issue may never be solved and that the world will continue to discuss Abbey, here is what Ed had to say about himself, taken from the Poetry Center Interview: "The real Edward Abbey -- whoever the hell that is -- is a real shy, timid fellow, but the character I create in my journalism is perhaps a person I would like to be: bold, brash, daring...I guess some people mistake the creation for the author, but that's their problem." Resist Much, Obey Little is essential reading for those who knew Ed, as well as for those who are just discovering him.

En-thralling
I knew Rhonda as Ron and if anyone can succeed, she can. I have had the chance to talk with Rhonda and she is a sweet and beautiful person. The book is well written and you can almost feel the struggles Ron was going through. I was unable to put the book down. Good luck and "God Bless You".

The inside story about gender change.
This book is a must for all those interested in gender change operations. The personal story is classic for the trials and tribulations of individuals suffering with this problem. It is a story of personal victory told in a sensitive and warm style that all can relate to. I personally met Rhonda on a plane and saw her in transition. She is an attractive new person with charm and wit! I loved her story.

I am Going be a Robot Builder When I Grow Up
I built the robotic hand all by myself without help. It has red and blue pieces. The robotic hand grabs some things, but not everything. It worked better with rubber bands, which I added to my kit. It is really cool.

Robot Ideas Galore
As a parent of a child whose imagination runs wild with ideas of building and designing moving gadgets this item was very much appreciated. Motors and wires and very well layed out instructions will intrigue anyone with a mind and love for robots. You don,t have to be a child to enjoy the ideas that are set forth here. Hooray !! Thumbs up to the developers of this product.

Delightful reading, makes me want to get out on the rock.
I normally find "how to" books dull. Not this time. I feel like I've been climbing with someone form the old school. It's not often you can gain true experience from reading a book.

Fun to read book with great information!
This book will give you the basics of what you need to know to begin rock climbing, or to help you move on from top roping to lead climbing. But, unlike the other "how to" books out there on rock climbing, it is written in a breezy, entertaining style that will hold your interest like a good novel. You won't feel like you're reading a "how to" book at all. It even makes you laugh! I recommend it highly.

A must read every flight instructor
Mr. Brown, a Master CFI and columnist in the National Association of Flight Instructors (NAFI) explores flight instruction *as a business*. Viewed another way, The Savvy Flight Instructor picks up where the FAA's Fundamentals of Instruction left off.

In addition to discussing how to successfully build a career out of flight instruction, Mr Brown presents a marketing plan: how to position yourself, where to find prospective students (and how to advertise), determining how serious they are, closing "the deal" and maintaining "customer satisfaction."

Having worked with over 25 different instructors in the last five years, I found the customer satisfaction (and projecting professionalism) sections are wonderful. These should be required reading because too often we forget that students *are customers* - they need to feel important, should have their expectations set accurately, can be recurring customers, AND are the best form of advertising. We're not competing amongst each other as much as we are against other ways to use disposable income (e.g., a $6000 jjet-ski).

Finally, Mr Brown offers specific suggestions for flight schools. Some of these are no-brainers like "keep the airplanes well-maintained," but there are some more subtle ideas like incorporate a formal ground school (often overlooked), set expectations on how students will be billed (instructors are prone to not bill for time; this also encourages more efficient planning) and incentives for instructors to minimize burnout.

This is a great reference for the career instructor as well as the CFI building time for his or her airline job.

The Guide to Making Money in the Flight Training Business.
As a Flight Instructor, you probably can't wait to do something else. Maybe night freight in a Baron. Maybe right seat in a Beech 1900. But have you ever stopped to consider, in your rush to leave Instructing, that you might be missing a huge opportunity not only to improve your piloting skills, but to improve yourself on a personal level and to MAKE MORE MONEY?

Are you hanging up on customers who call your school without getting a name and number? Are you sitting there waiting for the customer to come to you? Are you sick and tired of staring out the window on days with low ceilings, moaning about what a tough life the CFI lives? Are you fed up with driving an 81 econobox with 240,000 miles on it? Are you sick of eating Ramen noodles for dinner and with sharing an apartment with 3 other guys who are just as poor as you are?

You can MAKE MORE MONEY in Flight Instructing. The reason you are poor and not flying enough is because your piloting skills alone are just a foundation for your instructing career; now you need to be open to learning about how you can make sure those skills are earning what they are really worth, which I guarantee you is more than $24 a flight hour. If you don't believe me, find the December 1998 issue of Flight Training Magazine and read page 6 very carefully; it's time you opened your eyes and learned about selling, about business, about supply and demand, and about how you can play a part in making the job of the CFI into the Profession we all say it should be. Then, buy this book and start learning.

Sincerely,

Jeff Packer, CFII

Great resource for research
I have used this book several times for a quick reference, more thorough reviews and as a bibliographic source. It has been invaluable in all respects. In most cases it was the only reference I could find on discinplinary history or aspects of that history.

For readers of history, for people interested in the Earth
I am the editor of the book and just want to put in a good word so people might know what to expect from it. First, it is two volumes, long and richly detailed -- so it's worth the price. The authors --all 140-- are very well informed on their various geosciences but also on their histories. How was the geological column unravelled and where did those names come from? How have storms or northern lights or ocean currents been understood in different times and places? How did our expansion into space affect our understanding of the Earth? All of these stories and many more are told in these volumes in ways that both inform and challenge. These stories are also authoritative reflections of the "state of the art" in history of Earth Science. So if you are a student or a professional historian of science, these volumes provide a basis for further research. There is a "Guide to Resources for Research in the History of Geosciences". An alphabetical index includes over 2000 people who have contributed to geoscience, including their full names and birth-death dates in most cases.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who would like to know more about "Sciences of the Earth" or about this field in history.

Shape of the Liturgy
Published in Paperback by Seabury Pr (1984)
Authors: Dom Gregory Dix and Gregory Dix
Amazon base price: $25.95
Average review score:

*The* Classic of Liturgical Studies
Most Liturgical scholars own a copy of Dix's 'Shape of the Liturgy.' The reason is that Dix is perhaps the most thorough and erudite liturgical scholar of the 20th century. 'Shape' is a classic that has fundamentally shaped most Protestant and Catholic denominations. To the person not familiar with 'liturgy,' it means 'work of the people,' and is the way in which Christians have traditionally worshipped. It is a common worship, in which the worship of various separate churches is similar, but varies by time of year, and with the local culture.

Dix starts with an introduction to the Liturgy; then he moves on to the performance of the Liturgy. Then he begins his historical quest, in which he attempts to find the roots of the liturgy in the Biblical documents, moving into the pre-Nicene time period. It was in the very early pre-Nicene times that the Eucharist came to consist of a four-action shape: offering, thanksgiving, fraction, and communion. He discusses the Eucharistic prayer, the local traditions, the meaning and theology of the Eucharist, consecration theology, sanctification of time, and the ceremonial. He then discusses the completion of the shape, and the use of variable prayers. Then he covers the medieval liturgy, the Reformation liturgies (with particular attention to Anglican issues), and a call for renewal.

Overall, Dix's work is monumental. Sometimes, it is a bit too monumental. The work is 764 pages long. Much of what he says could be condensed into probably 200 pages effectively. However, his attention to detail is marvelous: he has read every Church father writing 2-3 times! Dix is partly responsible for the rediscovery of Liturgy in most mainline Churches, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church to the United Methodist Church. His research into early liturgies has demonstrated the Jewish nature of many Christian liturgies. I highly recommend this book. However, a little patience is needed to get through the entire book.

A Classic on Liturgy returns
"Everything old is new again" seems to have impacted the Christian Church in the 21st Century. With the "rediscovery" of the richness and depth of the ancient forms of worship, the reprint of this classic on liturgy is very welcomed.

Dom Gregory Dix, an Anglican scholar, began a short presentation of the shape of liturgy that by his own admission became an expansive examination of how the Church has worshipped over the centuries. The research is outstanding and the general usefulness of the book is amazing considering the length to which the author has gone to verify his conclusions.

This outstanding work is a key for those theologians, pastors and priests seriously interested in the worship of the church through the ages. A serious layman can obtain much from the book as well.

Socrates : Ironist and Moral Philosopher
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (1991)
Author: Gregory Vlastos
Amazon base price: $26.00
Average review score:

vlastos rides again
This is a superb book on the philosophy of Socrates. You may not agree with Vlastos point by point; but if you disagree, you will have to work out your objections very carefully. One minor quibble: Vlastos seems to determined to defend whatever Socrates does and however he argues. This sometimes leads to (what looks very much like) special pleading. But the book is a masterpiece of readable, analytic philosophy.

A classic whether you agree with Vlastos' views or not
A deeply profound scholarly work that is both well-written and a pleasure to read is hard to find, but Vlastos achieves this in this wonderful book. Although i do not agree with some of Vlastos' points concerning Plato, i must acknowledge the fact that most, if not all, of my ideas on Plato were either improved or disproved by either agreeing or disagreeing with Vlastos' interpretation of Plato. This book is one of the best ways for any reader of the Plato to be initiated into the various interpretations of his thought. The various theses raised by most scholarly works on Plato today can be traced to have developed either in agreement or in disagreement to this book. Some ideas that you will find in this work are: -a theory on how to chronologically arrange the Platonic corpus -an influential approach to understanding the reasons behind and the limits of the Socratic method -a theory on how to separate Plato's thought from Socrates' thought

Hurray for Christian Fiction!
Hurray for Christian fiction that walks along the edge of reality! With an easy style, Eileen Gregory has spun a tale of great drama; weaving elements of shame and guilt and being set free!

Soul Cry
Soul Cry is a deeply moving story about one woman's plight to discover her own identity. She already has a strong faith when she finds herself in a series of "cliff hanging" calamities that threaten to destroy not only her faith, but her life as well.

The author has done her homework with regard to the circumstances that present themselves in the lives of her well developed characters. She successfully moves her reader, with her characters, into and out of tragic, but plausable, gripping situations.

I would recommend this book to anyone, but especially to young people in their late teens and early twenties.

The book has the potential to change lives with it's message, and it is also a good "mystery" type read.
