the greatest poetry ever written
Gerard Manley Hopkins is the greatest English poet to ever put pen to paper, bar none. Yes, even better than Shakespeare. Every student of English lit should read Hopkins. Hopkins writes from a profound love and awe of God and the beauty of His creations, but also from a deep despair resulting from chronic depression. His mastery of classical English combined with his magic use of sounds and word inventions is sheer genius. Read him.

unique creativity
This is a huge catalog for an exhibition that documented the work of 32 artists spanning the 20th century, and which was presented in 6 museums in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Forth Worth, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Rochester, N.Y.; and New York City.
Self-taught artists gained tremendous interest in the 1990's, with many curators starting to include pieces into their collections and exhibit schedules.
"Outsider art", as this is also known as, also contributes to the multiculturism of America, as so many of its creators are from diverse backgrounds.

The earliest artist profiled, who lived from 1836 to 1908, is Henry Church, Jr., whose "Self-Portrait with Five Muses" is so wonderful. Among the others are Scottish-born John Kane (1860-1934) with his solemn figuratives, Edgar Alexander McKillop (1879-1950) with his whimsical sculptures in black walnut wood, the great Russian-born Morris Hirshfield (1872-1946) with his unusual female figures and lionine cats, the immensely popular Grandma Moses (1860-1961), the incredible wood carvings of Elijah Pierce (1892-1984), intricate mixed media on paper from Mexican-born Martin Ramirez (1895-1963), whose "Untitled" frontispiece for this book is terrific, the mystical mixed media work of Sister Gertrude Morgan (1900-1980), and the youngest artist included is Ken Grimes (b. 1947) who works with white lettering/designs on a black background.

Perhaps my favorites are Horace Pippin (1888-1946), who is surely one of the greatest of African-American artists, and Joseph Yoakum (1890-1972) with his graceful, delicate drawings.
Each artist represented has an extensive biography, with examples of their work. This is a weighty volume with glossy pages and 140 full-color plates. As the inside cover states: "This is a significant appraisal of the contribution self-taught artists have made to American culture and life".

Classic Book for Serious Readers
This book is a classic in its field. No matter if you are a student of semiotics, architecture in general or church architecture, this is a must read. The causal reader should have some sense of what the discipline of semiotics encompasses prior to reading this book. The best book for the subject matter presented.

Excellent for a newcomer and an expert in the field!
Gerard Vallee has produced a volume which will be equally useful to one being introduced to Chris- tianity during its formative years and for those who have been involved in this study for many years. A glossary and excellent indices are a bonus. The rehabilitation of "hertics" is excit- ing as are the author's insights on conversion and inculturation. The book is intended for col- lege and university undergraduates but will have many other uses in discussion groups and in an RCIA programme, for example. Its excellent and precise English will stretch the vocabulary of readers, something to be hoped for at any and every educational level in which it will be used. It might also be used by gifted secondary school students unhappy with the "pap" that is presented in too many high school church history classes. As one who has taught this subject in several settings, I recommend it unreservedly. Catherine Berry Stidsen, Ph.D., R.T.C.

The cultivated and decadent lifestyle of Sicilian nobility
Sicilian Twilight: The Last Leopards is a coffee table history book showcasing the cultivated and decadent lifestyle of Sicilian nobility who were absolute lords of their domain down to the waning years of the 18th century. Gerard Gefen's meticulous research and narrative skills provide an informative, insightful, engaging test which is superbly enhanced and documented by the photography of Jean-Bernard Naudin. Among the 275 illustrations (with 182 being in full color), there are period documents and 19th century photographs, as well as new photos of gardens, palaces, jewels, table settings, and other luxury items typical of the daily life of Sicilian nobility. Sicilian Twilight is very highly recommended reading and would make an excellent "Memorial Fund" acquisition for both academic and community library collections.

A great account of US glider forces in WW II.
Mr. Devlin's "Silent Wings" is a great account of the US Army's glider forces during World War Two. It is well researched and well written. It contains a lot of historical information about the early days of the Army's glider training program and the problems of designing and building combat gliders in the United States.

The book contains detailed information about the many airborne and glider operations during the war. Of special interest is the descriptions of operations in Burma and the Phillipines. Mr. Devlin has skillfull included many first hand accounts into his book. The accounts give insight into the problems and luck that accompany the airborne soldier into battle. The book contains many photographs and specifications on the various glider designs used by the US Army. Although not as detailed as "History of the World's Glider Forces" by Alan Wood "Silent Wings" it is solidly researched and easy to read.

Well written and researched, "Silent Wings" rates and airborne "Hoo-ah!!"

Good, yet very twisted.... o.O
I don't have much to say, so unlike my other reviews, this will be relatively short, but.... this is a good, yet very twisted book.

Snorlax has one of the biggest appeties in all of Pokémon-dom, so how does he satisfy such a hunger? Well, when you're surrounded by Oddish (looks like a raddish) and Tangela (oodles o' noodles), I guess you'll have to make do....

Cannibalism amoung Pokémon.... weird...

How's Snorlax to get himself out of this predicament? I guess you'll have to find out yourself, because I'm sure as not going to tell you! So :P
