Wonderful Collection of His Poetry
Oxford University Press has done it again! This book is an absolutely wonderful compilation of Gerard Manley Hopkins' poetry, letters, and prose. With all of his poems (including fragments of poems), as well as letters and spiritual writings related to his conversion and his joining of the Jesuit order, this book not only gives the reader a wonderful selection of his work, but also an interesting insight into the life of Fr. Gerard Manley Hopkins. I would recommend this master of sprung verse to all.

The Great Shadow: Arthur Conan Doyle, Brigadier Gerard and Napoleon
Published in Hardcover by Calabash Press (1997)
Author: Clifford S. Goldfarb
Amazon base price: $33.00
Average review score:

A unique, informative, original, & engaging literary study.
Fans of Conan Doyle's adventure fiction now have an important reference to consult when considering his works and settings: a survey of the Napoleonic era which influenced Doyle to create the character of one Brigadier Gerard, whose adventures ran after Holmes had been killed off in 1893. This study considers all his Napoleonic works, analyzing methods and plots alike.

Hard Bop Piano: Jazz Compositions of the 50s and 60s
Published in Paperback by Gerard & Sarzin Pub Co (1999)
Authors: Charley Gerard, Evan Sarzen, and Evan Sarzin
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

Wonderful transcriptions of exotic tunes
Hard Bop Piano is a unique and extremely valuable collection of rarely played and largely under-appreciated tunes by some of the finest jazz pianists of the 50s and 60s. The authors present a number of pieces by the likes of Randy Weston, Herbie Nichols and Andrew Hill, each of whom carved out an utterly distinctive and instantly recognizable style for himself during the heyday of hard bop. Weston and Nichols, in particular, were extremely fine composers, each with a flair for off-kilter rhythms and unexpected, charming melodies; and the inclusion of their work alone would make this an essential addition to any jazz lover's library. The transcriptions are unusually good, and often include not only the basic melody and harmony of each tune, but also elements of their original recorded arrangements. This book would make a wonderful gift for any jazz pianist, regardless of their level of expertise.

Helvetian Apocalypse
Dr. Marsh and his collaborator have shown that a good physician can also be a good writer. His style of writing makes for easy reading and the intrecasies of the plot would tax even the most experienced mountineer! The plot also reveals the author's expertise in dealing with complex medical problems. The authors have also mirrored a very civilized life style and old world social graces which is gradually disappearing. Nice book to take away on vacation. Well done. Will watch the best seller lists.

A Book that is truly THE benchmark
This book - the 1633 revision of the 1597 "classic" - is truly THE benchmark for any herbal to follow. With almost 3000 listings and about 2700 illustrations, it is far closer to "complete" than any work I have yet seen under 1 cover! It lists under botanical, Latin, folk and English names. Obviously a life's work. A pleasure to behold, all 10 pounds of it!

Heterogeneous Catalysis in Organic Chemistry
Published in Hardcover by Academic Press (15 July, 1999)
Authors: Gerard V. Smith and Ferenc Notheisz
Amazon base price: $99.95

Heterogeneous Hydrogenation Made Accesible
For the advanced organic chemistry researcher who is entering the wonderful world of heterogeneous catalysis in general - and heterogeneous hydrogenation in particular - there is no single resource such as this to guide him. Working in the field of heterogeneous hydrogenation myself, I had felt that a modern, up-to-date, readable text was long overdue. Heterogeneous Catalysis in Organic Chemistry has all of these attributes and much much more. It will help you o brave chemist to safely navigate the enormous and often useless primary literature and reach what you were looking for. Be that experimental details for a particular transformation, current developments in the scope of the field, understanding of the underlying theory. I strongly reccomend all organic synthesis research departments obtain a copy. It will be invaluable for the whole range of staff, from the first year inexperienced graduate student nervously exploring the field, to the research group leader who wants to update his knowledge and understanding, painlesly, accurately and quickly.

History of the Surrealist Movement
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (2002)
Author: Gerard Durozoi
Amazon base price: $95.00
Average review score:

Astonishing and thorough history of Surrealism
This book is awesome. I've purchased histories of Surrealism before--all of which are now desperately out-dated and out of print besides...including the great Abrams book on Dada and Surrealism. This book beats them all. For one, it covers not just the Surrealists in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s, but examines the spread of the movement to the US, Africa, Japan, India, and South America during the 1940s-1960s. For two, it deals with all media: painting, sculpture, poetry, philosophy, fiction, film, etc. For three, it features biographies of all the major stars, and also of all the minor players in their orbits. For four, it includes 1000 illustrations--many of them documentary and never published before this book was originally released in the French edition, as well as many many color plates scattered throughout the text. A beautiful production, and a terrific text by Durozoi, who was linked to the Surrealists in the 1950s and 1960s by virtue of his involvement with philosophy.

Honey, I'm Home! Sitcoms: Selling the American Dream
Published in Paperback by St. Martin's Press (1993)
Author: Gerard Jones
Amazon base price: $10.47
List price: $14.95 (that's 30% off!)
Average review score:

This book is well-written, witty, informative, provocative..
...and pretty thorough! The book examines American ideas of family & gender by examining television's portrayal of the American family through the decades. While the analysis is consistantly sharp, intelligent, and revealing, the writing is always clear, frequently funny, and occassionally evokes nostalgia.

You will be surprised at the degree to which-- and the manner in which-- changes in the TV's sitcom families reflect changes in American culture and values. Do you think Hollywood would have even conceived of 'The Brady Bunch'-- an instant family created by the marriage of two previously married individuals-- back in Ozzy & Harriet's 1950's? What can you say about a decade in which George Jefferson, Archie Bunker, and JJ from 'Good Times' were central characters in the weekly line-up?

The author does an excellent job of presenting the parallel changes taking place in society and on TV over the past few decades. This book is a fascinating piece of cultural commentary in which the author uses seemingly innocuous television shows to construct a picture of American values in much the same way that an archaeologist constructs an image of a society by making inferences from the artifacts it has left behind.

Average review score:

Brilliant and sensitive.
Norman White is the world expert on Gerard Manley Hopkins, and his new book on Hopkins in Ireland gives a clear and stunningly sad picture of the last years of Hopkins' life. As usual, White's prose is clear and nuanced. We are all lucky to have White as a lover/critic of the sublime Gerard Manley Hopkins.
