Words from a satisfied customer:
Dear Gerard I love your poems! They inspire me and touch me deeply. I read a few, then a few more till I nearly read them all at one shot. "When I go Sailing" is a poem for my husband. He has a small sailboat he puts in the lake and I know he feels as you expressed in your poem. My favorite is "Dreams and Sandcastles", but I also love "My Woman" and "Bison (Ode to the American Buffalo)". I will put them with my other treasured books. > Many can write, but to write and touch and change one for just an instant, that is the TRUE gift. You have touched my soul.

Blurb from Richard Hell
"It cannot be said too often and it's never said enough that the mass news-media have low-to-no standards of accuracy, whether in relatively minor or peripheral areas of their reporting where their interests may not be obviously at stake (except in that it's in their interest not to go to the expense of bothering to check facts, and to conceal this) or in the larger matters where their prejudices are more apparent. And, as the media leaders know, since almost all news becomes "old" the moment it's broadcast, most victims of their misrepresentations are at a disadvantage not only because of a power mismatch, but because a protester looks like a fool to be challenging yesterday's papers. But the consequences of the media's irresponsibility and maliciousness are real to their victims. Guy Debord finally had to react. A rare and nice touch is where he mentions that he actually has no higher opinion of the consumers of the media than he does of the disseminators of it. Heh heh.

The tract is full of these sudden sharp insights into Debord. It's great as well for its evocation of the whole intense time and place (Paris art/life radicalism, 1957-84)."

Funny!
I just finished reading this book the other day, and I think it's very cute and funny! Diglett is having a birthday party and four of it's friends have come to celebrate. However, there's one problem: Diglett's cave is so dark that no one can see anything! However, Diglett continues to have his party even though his friends can't see. I think it's cute to guess what Diglett and his family look like. We get to see the inside of the cave twice: once when the candles on Diglett's cake are lit, and another time when the toy plane that Diglett got for his birthday breaks a hole in the roof of his cave and lets light in. I think this a very cute book because kids can use their imaginations to envision what the members of Diglett's family look like.

Very nformative and interesting.
This book is very deceptive in its simplicity. It explains how errors can and do occur. The theme is 'if you know what can go wrong, you can do something about it'. Filled with examples of how simple (and not so simple) mistakes can happen and the sometimes tragic consequences. Excellent reading for managers, engineers and anyone interested in understanding and reducing errors- including the typo in the one line summary.

Sherlockians Rejoice
Sherlock Holmes pastiches have become rife in the years since "The 7% Solution", and they, like the works of Doyle himself, vary widely. Now comes a new twist in an adventure featuring Dr. James Mortimer, the man who left his cane behind in "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It is one of the best, precisely because it does NOT feature the master himself. Set in a richly detailed Victorian London, it gets both the feel of the times and the feel of the genre precisely right while providing a stunning mystery/adventure. One's only question is why this "mystery" is being published before the author's "Aldgate Mystery" (due August) to which it purports, at least, to be the sequel? At any road, READ THIS! (Unless, of course, you don't like Sherlockiana, in which case, why are you even here? -at this site, not on earth)

Did Napoleon have a data network? (yes he did..!)
Most of us would consider the emergence of large-scale communication networks to be a twentieth-century phenomenon. The first true nationwide data networks, however, were being built almost two hundred years ago. At the turn of the 18th century, well before the electromagnetic telegraph was invented, many countries in Europe already had fully operational data communications systems, with alltogether close to one thousand network stations. This book documents the many attempts throughout history to develop effective means for long distance communications. The oldest attempts date back to millenia before Christ, and include an ingenious uses of homing pigeons, mirrors, flags, torches, and beacons. The book then shows how Claude Chappe, a French clergyman, started the information revolution in 1794, with the design and construction of the first true telegraph network in France. Included is also the first complete English translation of a remarkable document on the design of optical telegraphs that was written in 1796 by the Swedish nobleman Abraham Niclas Edelcrantz, the builder of the Swedish optical telegraph network.

A treasure!
A VERY interesting and informative book. The selections are given in Old Irish on one side of the page with the translation given on the opposite side, which is helpful when comparing the languages. It is filled with monks' prayers and songs as well as Early Irish legends and myths. A treasure for anyone interested in the langauge and culture of the early Irish!
