The Ruined Tower
Nerval was the Mother of All Bohemians, a romantic eccentric who set the stage for latter-day zanies from Arthur Rimbaud to John Wieners. His most famous stunt was parading through Paris with a lobster, explaining to his friends: "He does not bark, and he knows the secrets of the deep." With the beautiful, dense, enigmatic poems in 'The Chimeras' he virtually invented literary Modernism, while 'Aurelia' is one of the most touching accounts of schizophrenia ever written (the book is worth it for these two pieces alone, along with the proto-Proustian 'Sylvie'). Nerval's tragic disintegration, ending in suicide in 1855, seems to mark the point where Romanticism turned from fantasy and Nature to madness and derangement, a pattern that still plays out in our culture in a hundred different ways. Sieburth's a little intrusive with the prefaces and footnotes--he seems anxious you might not 'get' Nerval without his help. The sections are also arranged thematically instead of chronologically, which makes it hard to trace his development as a writer. But the notes include plenty of useful biographical information, and for the money it's easily the best selection of Nerval's writings in English. A great intro to a fascinating writer.

An excellent phantasmagoric collection!
I came upon this volume by chance, after it won a translation prize from PEN, but was glad I did. Nerval seems to take up a curious position in literary history, and though is something of an eccentric, he was loved by later writers (Proust) and by artists (Joseph Cornell). The stories are strange and fantastic, travel narratives which are more journeys of the mind than actual travels. Anyone with an interest in the surreal, or in the fabular fictions of Calvino or Borges, will find these stories a delight. The stories raise questions about identity, sanity and madness, and linguisticly are truly alluring.

Also included are a number of poems and letters, which combined with the prose pieces present a great picture of the author's whole work. It seems like the best place to start for anyone who has not read Nerval before, but I'm sure that dedicated enthusiasts will find new pleasure in the excellent translation and the lucid editorial expositions that Richard Sieburth provides throughout the text.

Published in Paperback by IEEE (1996)
Author: Gerard Blair
Amazon base price: $29.99
Average review score:

very well written essential business management information
This book is a very well written guide to the essentials of business management. No techno-babble, no haughty wordiness. Direct, succinct, and funny at times. Nice book for those of us who have too much of this type of stuff to read.

A USEFUL and EASY book (though not "a la page")
This book doesn't have nice illustration or fancy pictures, but covers all the major aspects of managing, without boasting or waffling. It's very well written, so I would define it a "VERY USEFUL" book.

Straight Ahead Jazz Fakebook

The Only source for these tunes
Of all the fake books out there (including a well known set of under-the-counter ones owned by all jazz musicians), this is the *only* one that has all, or even most, of the tune found here. You've got tunes by Jackie McClean, Hal Galper, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson... you get the idea. If you know who these players are... you need this book.

Any real jazz musicians will dig this
This book is the jazz musicians dream, nice tunes presented in easy to look at format. None of that junk you get with those other fakebooks, this is the best ever. Anybody who includes Hank Mobley in a fakebook gets my vote.

A classical book.
This book is a classical. It's important you'll buy for your library.

Difficult, but it's best !
This is not an easy book. The mathematics are very rigorous, but everything is well defined, and it is self-contained. However, it pays to read this short book. If you want to understand the foundations of the modern economic analysis, this the place to look

Two Tablets a Day: God's Prescription for Happiness

A beacon in life
Aren't we all searching for a beacon in life. Well, I have found one in this inspiring and uplifting book. Buy it and read it.

Lively stories and examples
"Van der Zee considers each of the Ten Words in a separate chapter, giving [...] a brief summary of its interpretations within Calvinist, Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Lutheran faith communities over the centuries. The discussion is far from exegetical. Although Van der Zee is clearly a gifted Scripture scholar, he has chosen here to address his audience - I would say a secularized audience - in down-to-earth colloquial language and with lively stories and examples. The chatty style helps to make the Tablets speak." Paul Matthew St. Pierre, in THE BRITISH COLUMBIAN CATHOLIC

Great history and biography of the early Velvets
This is a fantastic book! It covers alot of the early formative years, and is worth getting just for that.

I do think that it starts to lose its depth when it comes to the later years, their last two studio albums (which are highly under-rated in comparison to the first two experimental albums). But what this book covers concerning the formation and first two albums is an excellent piece of rock n roll history! Highly Recommended!

Intelligent & entertaining approach
An intelligent and entertaining approach to one of the most influential (read: they didn't sell a lot of records in their heyday)rock bands ever. Great pix too. The Velvets epitomized a time when artists didn't feel narrowly compelled to practise any ONE discipline, but rather people were less afraid to combine ideas, cross genres and disciplines. The spirit of the time, to me, suggests Possibility. Yes, Warhol et al. could drift into pretention, but that's the price (and it's really not such a costly one) you pay for being daring. You may go too far sometimes, and by today's (stupid?) standards, perhaps some of the VU "happenings" might appear contrived. But I don't think so! Altogether, VU rules. Way ahead of their time, and before it too. And beside it.

Buy this book, but more importantly, buy into the Underground.
