Breathless
Each and every page I turn, I feel a sudden death,
for every time I read a phrase or line, Chambers steals away a breath.
His expertise and brilliance is amoung the best upon the shelf...reading his book it seems that you are receiving a private acting lesson in reality from Mr. Stevens himself.

Making of Star Trek Deep Space Nine

Comprehensive, entertaining
A monster of a book, like a phone book and worth it. It illustrates and comments extensively on the progressive designs of the station, the evolution of the crew, the preparation of the story and the SFX. Every little detail, enhanced with B&W and colour photos, excerpts from draft and final scripts -- this is more than piddly interviews with the cast and a few exposĂȘ arguments. This covers DS9 from start to..well, not finish, but it's one heck of a start, and well worth it to pick it up if you're a DS9 fan. It's extremely fun.

This book will deepen your understanding of brewing.
This book is a wonderful update to what was covered by Jean DeClerk in the 1940's. What was emperically known at that time is more scientifically explained in this book which brings your brewing knowledge to a whole new level of understanding. The 'science' gets heavy in some parts, but if you really want to know, this is a fine book.

Dietrich: the Lord of Discipline
Having read Maria Riva's book on her mother along with Dietrich's own autobiography, I didn't really expect any new revelations from this book -- but I couldn't have been more wrong! Mr. Bach is to be congratulated on his fascinating and respectable work honoring Miss Dietrich and her life. What a remarkable performer and a remarkable human being. We could sure use a few more like her in today's world. This is a must read for fans of the Lady and the Legend!!

Clear distinction of styles with great photos
This book is hard to find in libraries but is an excellent resource. Excellent photographs of bowls and clear description of styles and meaning makes the book invaluable. We use it in our class.

The Motion Picture Image: From Film to Digital

An essential, "reader friendly", comprehensive reference.
The Motion Picture Image: From Film To Digital is a comprehensive survey of the principles of motion picture imaging. Written in a narrative form, the topics covered include an overview of traditional film process, film to video transfer, film formats, high-definition television, film scanners and recorders, and digital cinema. While these aspects are largely explored from the director of photography's perspective, The Motion Picture Image: From Film To Digital is also a very, practical, useful resource for producers and filmmakers interested in the technical aspects of the moving image. The Motion Picture Image: From Film To Digital is a highly recommended, essential addition to any personal, film school, or professional reference collection.

Follow the Money!
This book will help anyone who desires to learn how their box office ticket dollars are spent. The authors take you step by step through a standard profit participation agreement. I feel the authors are not as aggressive as they should be hollywood's unethical "creative accounting". The distributors and the audit firms would like artists to believe that the lack of knowledge is why many artist are "cheated" out of their net profits or as Eddie Murphy stated "monkey profits". All net profit participants should read this before they listen to their lawyers and auditors. Many auditors and attorneys are willing participants in the "net profit scam"!

This is the first of an ongoing series of art catalogs
Each 128 pp edition of "Paintings" catalogs, in full color, work of the 50 winners of a rigorous competition for mid-career and emerging painters held in one of six regions of the US and juried by curators from major art museums (Guggenheim, National Gallery, etc.) museum-quality stock and reproduction; exciting new talent; almost no artspeak. Collectors and gallery directors report using these books as valuable resources for finding new talent. Great coffee table books for everyone!

Like potato chips, it's hard to be satisfied with with just one. This first, 1993, volume features artists from New England. Subsequent volumes feature artists from Mid-Atlantic, Southern, Midwestern, Western and Pacific Coast states; and then start again in the Northeast. Differences and similarities of artists around the country are fascinating to follow.

As of December, 1997, at least two competitions will have been held in each region of the country. For a list of volume numbers by region, e-mail your request to us.

Newsletters Now: From Classic to New Wave

As Good As A Newsletter Gets
Newsletters are no longer recognizable as the inexpensively printed corporate mutations between form letter and newspaper that were mailed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Nowadays, with no holds barred newsletter layouts, "MIX Matters" appears in notepad style, "The National Design Museum" publishes in book size, and "Rewards" has the full-color look of food and travel magazines. But image, paper and text should still balance into a distinctively classical, post modern or new wave format that is comfortably short, economical and print-efficient with the hallmark specialized news bits and identifiable logo.

Steven Heller also says that good newsletters are the creations of graphic designers in the post World War II tradition of Lester Beall, Brownjohn, Chermayeff & Geismar, and Paul Rand. Emphasizing that point, the author has the many striking examples in NEWSLETTERS NOW indexed in the closing pages by art designer and director, client, design firm, illustrator, and photographer. My favorite newsletter example is in fact "Alternatives," a two-color tabloid for which the full-time designer creates a different design with each issue.

The samples are good illustrations of what you can learn from Thomas Bivins and William E. Ryan's HOW TO PRODUCE CREATIVE PUBLICATIONS and Allen Hurlburt's THE GRID. They also work well with Chuck Green's THE DESKTOP PUBLISHER'S IDEA BOOK and Rita and Roberta Street's CREATIVE NEWSLETTERS & ANNUAL REPORTS. And it also is interesting to compare them with THE BEST OF NEWSPAPER DESIGN and Harold Darling's FROM MOTHER GOOSE TO DR SEUSS: CHILDREN'S BOOK COVERS 1860-1960.

Great for New Kids on the Block!!
I thought this was a great book. It is perfect for preparing the seasoned actor right down to the beginning college student! It dispells alot of assumptions and myths about all aspects of the audition process. If you are serious about being the cream of the cream and going to the top in the stage industry....this book is a requirement, not an option!!!!
