Intellectual Piece of Mind
It is a given that people take design for granted. So it is not surprising that many people have adapted to the rich multimedia interfaces they encounter each day. What is surprising however, is that the design community is only now just reacting to this shift and is struggling to cannonize "E-Design". It would seem that the design world is no different from any other sitting monarch reluctant to budge. If you are diving into 'E-Design', then you no doubt have noticed that the traditional design community fears you. This book was written with you in mind. It is the manifesto to the revolution. This collection of wonderful essays comes straight from the cutting edge thinkers in desgin today--some of them professors, who delight in throwing out references to critical theorists such as Foucault and Derrida. This book is long overdue and I am delighted to have found it as it helps to define the importance of E-Design in the future of design. Natalie Zee's writes, "Digital designers are at the forefront of the industry, those that are helping to define the dicipline, and those that are creating all the innovative interactive experiences...They are Design Technologists."
For all those traditional designers who don't take E-Design seriously, please read this book. As Charles Traub puts it in his essay, "The advent of the computer did not create the technical tangle of multimedia, but rather manifests a pre-existing need in our culture for a more democratic, universal, and diverse way to communicate."

Comments by experts in the field
"Thanks for writing such an interesting and inspiring book", Professor Scott Burns, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who is the Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, handling all of the papers on structural optimization.

"From another viewpoint on topology optimization we also recommend the most stimulating book, Evolutionary Structural Optimization", Professor Ernest Hinton, University College of Swansea, U.K., who is the co-author of a recent book entitled 'Homogenization and Structural Topology Optimization'.

"This book is a most interesting and innovative addtion to the literature on structural mechanics. It will find a place in all design office libraries where structural efficiency is being studied to improve the component, whether it be a machine part, a structural member of an aircraft or any other system where stress, weight and cost are important. This is a pioneering book, well worth reading by the serious student or practitioner in the field of structural mechanics", Professor John Meek, University of Queensland, Australia, who is the author of a book entitled 'Computer Methods in Structural Analysis'.

excellent compilation, although spencer r crew and james e sims' article 'locating authenticity: fragments of a dialogue' can be repetitive, it makes excellent points in the section 'some locations of authenticity'.

A Prototype for Museum Catalogues
FACING EDEN: 100 Years of Landscape Art in the Bay Area was created to accompany the 1995 museum exhibition of the same name at the de Young Memeorial Museum in San Francisco. The fact that it retains popularity as a Book is a testimony of how fine the actual catalogue is. Beautifully illustrated and written, the idiosyncrasies of the Bay Area topography are first addressed with photographs and maps and drawings dating back to the 1890s. Then these seeds of ideas are followed through the great painters of the Bay Area and for many readers this will be the first exposure to the unique quality of composition, light, and stance that identifies some very major painters with a Regionalism that competes soundly with the Hudson River School! Here are the works of Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Diebenkorn, Andy Goldsworth, Stephen deStaebler, and David Park along side less well known painters such as Gordon Cook, Jess, and Michael Gregory. But the catalogue and exhibition are careful to include the three dimensional works of Bob Arneson,, Tony Cragg and Richard Shaw while introducing less well known works by such fine painters as Christopher Brown, Robert Bechtle, and Richard Estes. The book is divided into seven sections, each accompanied by a fine essay by some very fine art historians. And just as the book begins with factual photographs of the area that inspired the art, it ends with a beautifully rich section on art photographs of the 'interpreting' the lovely facts of nature. Highly recommended reading and looking.

A look at the business of movies and how it can all go wrong
When we sit in a darkened theater, watching pictures flicker and come to life before our eyes, we often forget that the movies are made with one primary purpose in mind, and contrary to popular belief, it's not to entertain us. Film studios are in the business of making money and lots of it, through careful financial and creative planning. They choose the concepts they think we will most like to see, they hire the directors and actors whose work they think we will find most appealing, and then they put a film together for a price they think they can recoup or, even better, make a profit from. Sometimes however, things go wrong. Final Cut tells the story of the making of Heavens Gate, infamous as one of the greatest financial debacles in film history, from an insiders point of view. It shows what can happen to the best laid plans of mice an men and gives a glimpse of a back office Hollywood we rarely see or hear about. Not only is the reader able to discern why the film was so unsuccessful, but how such a movie could even come to be made. Though now a bit dated, this remains a must-read for anyone with an intrest in the process of big-budget film making

Insights into his intentions and philosophy
Charles Strong's career as a Bay Area artist spans four decades and many different mediums. Fire And Flux is an impressive catalog of his achievements using a visual approach to explore his works. Insights into his intentions and philosophy are included but the meat of the book lies in these presentations of his art.
