Who knows musicals better?
There are few better ways of understanding a show than by reading the words of the critics who review it. Hits or flops, big names or no names, this is an extremely comprehensive book of a dizzying number of shows, with excerpts from the critics' opening night reviews. Steven Suskin makes some cuts here and there, and offers his own thoughts about the shows, but the critics are the stars of this book, and shine they do. There are some wonderful reviews of hits and flops alike, and the totality of reviews help paint a unique and irresistible picture of the shows and Broadway itself.

Calling all musical lovers!
You're in a restaurant. The wine is good, the food is better and the laughter is loud. All of the sudden, someone stops and yells "ONE LINE! A song, played on a solo saxaphone . . ." and you shout out "That's from "Miss Saigon!'"

If the above situation seems familiar, then "More Opening Nights on Broadway : A Critical Quotebook ofthe Musical Theatre from 1965 Through 1981" is for you! A book for those of us who love theatre with a passion, especially the mistakes! You can not have a library of musicals/theater literature without this book.

So your cat won't play with you and the only things on TV are "The Psychic Friends Hotline" and "Alligators: the way they love today?" Curl up in a big overstuffed chair and read about your favorite musical. Guaranteed to lift your spirits. You'll relish every fact, every mistake, every juicy tidbit. Then you'll call up your best friend and say "Hey, did you know what happened on the set of "My Fair Lady?'"

Don't think! Impulse buy! You won't regret it.

Musical lovers catnip!
If you love musicals, you can spend hours poring over this collection of reviews for the Broadway musicals that followed in the wake of OKLAHOMA. Hits and flops, all are here -- with some great insights and theatre diah provided by Suskin. For serious research or just plain fun reading, this is one of the most rewarding books ever published on the subject. (And the sequel is equally worthwhile!)

One of the Best Books on the History of Broadway Musicals
I bought "Opening Night on Broadway" when it was first published. I found it to be much more than a written recorded history of the Broadway Musical. It is a time capsule that captures the feeling of the periods when these shows first opened. The reader can almost feel what it was like to be there in 1956 at the opening of "My Fair Lady". Mr. Suskin gives useful biographical information about some of the theater's biggest stars. As someone involved in the business end of the theatre, I also enjoyed finding out whether or not a show was a financial success or failure. My only criticism is, I wish the book was laid out chronologically, not alphabetically. That way readers could get a better perspective of what else was running when "Guys and Dolls", or "Kiss Me Kate" or even "Donnybrook opened" All in all though, I found "Opening Night.." to be the hit of the season

Planning, Design and Analysis of Tailing Dams

Yes, it is in print and available!
............The planning and design of tailings impoundments has become a multidisciplinary enterprise that extends beyond the traditional application of geotechnical knowledge. This book is the first unified and systematic approach to the subject, bridging the various technical disciplines involved in the planning, design and reclamation of tailings dams. It describes the differences between tailings embankments and classical water retention dams from a geotechnical standpoint and outlines the application related fields to tailings dam design. Planning, Design and Analysis of Tailings Dams was written for geotechnical engineers, mining and metallurgical engineers, and regulatory personnel who have a fundamental knowledge of the principals of soil mechanics and water dam design. Steven G. Vick is a geotechnical engineer specializing in tailings disposal. Throughout his consulting career, Mr. Vick has explored the interface between theory and empiricism in tailings disposal. His research and technical publications formed the general outline for this book. After over 50 disposal projects, Mr. Vick is still intrigued by the complexity of the field. This book is a MUST in the engineering library.

Excelent
I'm writting from PerĂº, where I knew Mr. Vick and his works about tailings disposal. He's recognized in my country like an expert in this speciality. I'd like to take an Issue of this book. Tell m e about how much is it and how can I to buy it.

suskin does it again!
for fans of the broadway musical, steven suskin's books are indispensable. this time around he manages to explore the full bodies of work of some 36 broadway composers, as well as the work of various "lesser" lights. if you are any kind of fan beyond the most basic, there will be few reference books on the subject you will turn to more often. mine is beside my cd player, as i constantly am cross-referencing. if i can have a complaint, its that the book is too short -- but im sure thats the fault of suskin's publisher, who cant be making a fortune on this book as is.

btw, highly recommended: suskin's bi-weekly review of new recording....

for fans of show music, this is a MUST HAVE.

A most valuable reference tool
Anyone interested in Broadway lore must own at least three books, all by Steven Suskin. The first is which covers 1943-1964 and the sequel, which deals with 1965-81. These are compilations of what the major New York music critics had to say about the openings of every important show on or just Off-Broadway plus the author's comments about each. These books are very readable and an invaluable document of American musical history. Now Mr. Suskin has given us an equally valuable reference tool, but this is more to be used than to be read for enjoyment.

The third edition of his (Oxford University Press, 2000) is an encyclopedia of facts about the composers of the shows dealt with in the other volumes. The organization is like this. After several introductory pages, we are given facts about the composers of the early years from Jerome Kern to Harold Rome, new composers of the 40s and 50s, and those of the 60s and beyond. Having dealt with what Suskin considers (mostly rightly) to be the major composers, he then devotes the fourth part of the volume to "Notable scores by other composers": "Irene," "Shuffle Along," "Hair," and so on up to "Parade."

Then comes a feature or two, which to students of the American musical like myself, are almost worth the price of the book alone. There is a year by year listing of all the major Broadway productions from 1904-1998, a list of all people who collaborated on the shows (George Abbott, Guy Bolton, etc.), an index of song titles, and finally an index of show titles. Talk about user friendly!

Turning back to the main section and taking Gershwin as an example, Suskin gives us in chronological order facts about each of the shows from 1916 to a 1951 production that used Gershwin's music. For each, he lists all the published songs, indicates which were dropped by opening night, and gives some general comments about the show itself. Then he ends with an evaluation of Gershwin's Broadway output in general.

Concise, accurate (as far as I can see), beautifully organized. A real Grabbit.

very good information. and good for research.
Hi I bouhgt Southwestern Indian Jewelry and it arrived with no plastic wrap and the jacket was damaged. Please let me know how to go about exchanging it for another in perfect condition. I am a collector and condition is important. Thank You, Joe Garcia.

The one book on American Indian jewelery you must own.
As a collector of Indian art, jewelery, pottery and rugs, I had the wonderful good fortune to know and consider the Hopi Master jeweler Charles Loloma my friend.

Finding a book on American Indian jewelery was almost impossible to come by until this great book by Dexter came out in 1992. The artists, their work in magnificent color will move anyone to want to own some of this jewelry.

From it's beginings late in the 19th century jewelery was the Indian method of carrying their wealth around in the form of necklaces, braclets etc, Indian jewery was mainly of two schools. Most prominent was the Navajo and the other Zuni.

Then in the mid 1960's came a Hopi indian Charles Loloma. He was the Picasso that was going to revolutionize American Indian jewelery and he did. This book is a testament to Charlie's followers who now produce jewlery that is both modern and magnificant. Buy the book then go out to an Indian Art shop anywhere in CA, AZ, NM or even NJ and you will not be able to resist owning someting.

Exquisite Postmodern Critique of Celebrity-hood
This is an excellent, accessible collection of well-written essays on the intersection of sport, celebrity, and culture. In particular, the essays on "Gretzky Nation," "Global Hingis," and Michael Jordan were thought-provoking and did more than just glamourise the world of celebrity athletes. Highly recommended to anyone interested in seeing the cultural relavance of sporting figures in everyday global culture.

Brilliant!
Great book. Complete, and thought provoking. I especially enjoyed the chapter on "Global Hingis"!

Great book---it really describes Steven's life well, including lots of little details, which makes it fun to read! Not like a textbook at all...at times I found myself just sitting and reading the book instead of using it as planned to help me write a report on Steven Spielberg. Again, a great book this is, defintely get it! Go Steven Spielberg!

Hooray for Virginia Meachum!
In the past few years millions have marveled at the genius of Steven Spielberg. At least this many people should run out to their nearest book emporium and purchase Virginia Meachum's biography of the man behind the man behind the man. From his humble upbringing to his Hollywood triumphs, Spielberg's life is wonderfully and insightfully reveiewed by Meachum. A must-read.

Perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas
Superman Radio Scripts presents original radio scripts from the 1940s radio series Adventures Of Superman, gathering scripts never before available and pairing them with sixteen pieces of classic cartoon art. It's the scripts themselves which are the highlight here: perfect for Superman collectors or fans of old radio dramas.

Excellent Work of Yesteryear
I have been a fan of Superman for many years, but I have always
particularly enjoyed the Golden Age. This book has the radio script from Superman's best radio play to my knowledge entitled "Superman VS Atom Man". Since I also own the radio show on tape, I can read along as I enjoy the story. There are also some wonderful old pictures that accompany the story. All I can say is that I would enjoy seeing more of these radio scripts in print. The book says "volume 1", so I hope that means more volumes may be coming out. If you want a script of this wonderful radio story, you won't be disappointed. And, overall, the price is right!

Great education tool
This edition of the screenplay to "Traffic" is great for a number of reasons. One of which is that they have kept the edition in its shooting draft format, instead of doctoring it to match the version that ended up in the movie theaters. So some scenes are not arranged in the chronology that they appear in the finished film, which is a good insight into the filmmakers' process in putting the film together in the editing room. Another reason is the actual physical formatting of the text, which they have left alone in the standard script format with the courier new font. The conversation between the writer and the director in the introduction of the book reveals how the project originated and their reaction to critics' responses to the film. My only minor complaint is the fact that they did not publish the earlier draft of the screenplay; they have omitted the scenes that did not make it into the shooting draft. For educational purposes it would have been better had they included the omitted scenes, and simply note that they were taken out of the shooting draft (preferably with some explanation as to why they did so, but mere inclusion would have sufficed).

Over all this is a great edition but I would wait to get the early draft which will inevitably become available on the Internet in the months to come.

Very realistic!
The movie looked more like a docudrama or a special report than a fictitious thriller. Traffic is very realistic. Soderbergh, the cast and the film crew did an excellent job. To have the shooting script is another advantage and for film aficionados and film students this screenplay is a "Must" in their collection and valuable resource material. Another powerful thriller that I've recently come across and I very much recommend as the scenes come alive from the written page with one scene after the other like in a movie, is the very realistic and edgy thriller THE CONSULTANT by Alec Donzi.
