Anyone who is fortunate enough to live with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi will appreciate this book. The love the author has for her Corgis shines through in both the writing and the wonderful drawings. I'm so pleased that it is coming back into print.

What a wonderful book! I bought it as a gift, but had it sent to me so I could see it first. Big mistake! I was physically unable to part with it, and had to order another copy to send to my friend, who is lucky enough to live with a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Sally. If you love corgis, you'll love this book!

This was my all time favorite book when I was a child. I went on line, hoping to at least find a used copy for a friend's baby... and am thrilled to find that it is still in print! It's a great children's story, full of wonderful characters, with great illustrations. Very charming. I loved it as a child, and am glad to get to replace my old copy with a new one for my son.

I have this book, and I do say, it's worth getting the hardcover copy! The pictures are so cute, and the storyline is so original. This is one of my very favorite books of all time!

Unlike the Hollywood film Bat 21, Whitcomb's book provides in-depth coverage of entire rescue effort of Bat 21, from the pilots who flew the rescue sorties to the staff and intelligence officers who planned the operation behind the scenes to the Navy Seal team who worked the effort from the ground. Anyone interested in why the SAR mission expanded so greatly during the Vietnam War and why rescues are so critical to the morale and welfare of the air services must read this book. A tour de force!

This was a well written and researched account which told the true story behind the numerous missions to rescue Bat-21 Bravo and other fliers downed during subsequent missions during April 1972. Firstly I must say I was amazed to read of the neglect shown in the passage of information and/or Intelligence between the American Air Force and Army. How this could come about or allow to continue amazes me considering it had some bearing on the lives of American soldiers and airmen and also on the prosecution of the war.

I was unaware of the full details of the rescue of Lt. Col. Hambleton and the role and involvement of Navy SEALS and Sth Vietmanese troops. I had only seen the movie 'Bat 21' before and figured that it portrayed the 'true' story - how wrong can you be.

I think the authors attempt to answer a number of questions in relation to the 'worth' of one man during the 1972 Easter Offensive is well done but I would recommend that readers should take the opportunity to read 'Trial by Fire' by Dale Andrade which offers a detailed and excellent account of America's last Vietnam battle and which could also place this episode in perspective.

'The Rescue of Bat 21' is a good, quick book (164 pages) to read, the narrative flows along and the story never gets bogged down. If you want to read about man's un-selfish devotion to duty and his fellow man during a terrible war this is the book to read. Well done to the author and well done to those men who played a part in this story, especially those who did not return.

The lone survivor (Bat 21 Bravo) of a six-man crewed American warplane shot down by a surface-to-air missile parachutes near the DMZ and seeks cover to await recovery. Heavy clouds obscure visibility, but other than that the search and rescue aircraft crews have no reason to believe that this won't be anything but a moderately easy pickup.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Jay Crowe commanding an Air Force rescue helicopter drops through the clouds heading for the survivor when enemy fire comes up from all directions. The dashboard begins to disintegrate. Crowe and his copilot struggle to control the helicopter and clear the area. The crew is amazed at the scene below. North Vietnamese Army trucks, tanks, guns, and soldiers are everywhere. Bat 21 is trapped between two enemy divisions barreling across the borders in a full offensive to conquer South Vietnam. Still, the rescue attempt goes on.

As the author of "Coast Guard Action in Vietnam," I am pleased to read, not only a darn good true book about the Vietnam War, but, one that brings out the fact that Coast Guardsmen were active in that long engagement. Flying combat search and rescue was only one of their numerous missions. For example, LORAN, the electronic navigation system used to keep Bat 21 pinpointed and to place ordnance on enemy positions, was installed in the theater and manned by the Coast Guard.

Do yourself a favor, get both "Bat 21" by William C. Anderson and "The Rescue of Bat 21" by Darrel D. Whitcomb. Read them in tandem. Read "Bat 21" first. It puts you with the survivor on the ground evading capture for twelve days. Then read Whitcomb's book. It pulls back the camera to take into view the entire panorama of situation, equipment, and people, that went into this remarkable rescue exploit.

When you start the reading make sure you have a block of uninterrupted time because you may not want to stop until--the end.

I do not often read westerns, however I thought I would give a book like Brules, touted to be more literature than genre, a try. I'm sorry I did.

Brules is too long, too wordy, and unnecessarily racist. Yes, the white men and the indians didn't love each other. We know that. But having that driven home without redemption for over 400 of the 500 pages is nauseating at best. Brules himself is mostly without redemption. There is little to love in a man who views his woman as a beautiful piece of flesh and shoots and kills people to get whatever he needs. Yes, I'm sure there were lots of cowboys like that out there, but do we really want to spend a whole 500 and some pages in the company of one?

That said, Brules is fairly well written, and Harry Combs did manage to create one character I really cared about--the young man we meet at the beginning of the book and to whom Brules tells his story, Steven Cartwright. I hear Combs wrote a whole book about him, The Legend of the Painted Horse, and perhaps I will go give that a try.

All told, Brules is probably a good read for Western readers. I think the rest of us, however, will find it a bit nauseating.

This is one of the best books that I have read about the old west. The detail that Mr. Combs puts into this book is just awsome. After you read this book you will want to go and saddle a horse, strap on you .38 Smith & Wesson, put your model 66 Winchester in its sheath and have your own adventures. If you like Louis L'amour's books then you will love Brules. He is the man that we all wish we could have been, in the time of history when survival of the fittest was the way of the land. This was a hard time that demanded hard men to tame the "wild west". What they got in Brules was one of the harderst and most dangerous men(when rialed) they could have imagined. Brules is one of the men that legends are made of. This IS the best western book that I have read and I highly recommend this book to any person who is fascinated about the time and people.

THIS BOOK BY HARRY COMBS IS FABULOUS. THE DETAILS OF THE AREA ARE SUPERB. AS WE LIVE VERY CLOSE BY AND HAVE BEEN TO THIS SPOT MANY TIMES, WE ARE VERY PLEASED WITH HIS PRECISE DETAIL. THE STORY IS SO EASY TO FOLLOW AND CAPTIVATING, WE COULD NOT WAIT TO OBTAIN THE NEXT 2 BOOKS. MANY OF OUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS IN NORWOOD HAVE ORDERED THIS ON OUR RECOMMENDATION. This is one exceptional and extraordinary book that I have ever read in the ever-eventful approach to climacteric college application essays. I have examined through 35 or so similar self-help related books with a "magnifier and a fine-tooth-comb," and all have particularly failed in comparison to Harry Bauld's work of art. Bauld's book is the quintessential of this topic. His book unquestionably stood out from all the other books (like an illuminated Eiffel Tower in a dark Parisian night). Bauld's book is that vital "compass" bewildered high school students ache for in order to get across that catastrophic hurdle of applying to colleges. Bauld teaches (with intense & witty humor) the reader to concretely compose for themselves (in an invigorating and upstanding technique-form) an essay that upholds the applicant's chances in getting into "The Dream" University, rather than have it end up in the "round file." Bauld's meticulous methods are fair and justified. He distinctly illustrates his accounts on the How, What, When, Where & Why, as well as the bloopers most writers have mistakenly included in their essays. One revelation that should catch an ordinary John or Jane Doe's eye is that Harry Bauld has been behind the admissions scene at Ivy League Schools (Brown and Columbia). In essence, he is not of the countless, clueless or ignorant high school college counselors that often misinform and misdirect students on the applicants' approaches to the "Field of Dreams." Bauld takes you to the Ballpark and coaches you through the entire game: from the initial thought process, to brainstorming of ideas, to the roughdraft stages of writing and to the finale of editing. He narrates on the "McGwirean-homerun-hitting-essays" as well as those critically "how-to-strike-out-essays." He includes inconceivable and exemplary essays that "got in," and model essays that "got tossed." Moreover, this book not only serves the solo purpose for high school students applying to colleges, but for college students applying to higher elite institutions as well. I am a living testimony to this. I had extreme difficulty drafting a convincing essay to Stanford University. After exercising the guerilla tactics by Bauld, I got accepted! Last but not least, this is one book that teaches you to write better. Indeed, Bauld's book is the super-octane gasoline any lost applicant needs to drive from Point A to Point B in the college application essay process. I give this book five stars and two thumbs up (way up)! Harry Bauld's winning book will lead you through the minefield! Remember: a winner picks a winner.

This is a superbly-written guide to writing college application essays; one would be wise to apply the advice this book offers to everything one writes. I highly recommend this witty and informative guide to anyone going through the college application process.

I've read several books on the college application process and it is clear that the essay plays a major role in determining whether or not an applicant is accepted. Mr. Bauld has written an entertaining, informative and very easy-to-read book that is also thankfully short. No long-winded, self-congratulatory filler here! It gets right to the point and is generous with excellent examples. In fact, this book is a great resource not only for those prepping to write a college application essay, but it contains great advice for writers in general. This book is well worth its reasonable price for the ideas, motivation and examples it provides. Now I need to get a clue from Mr. Bauld and keep this short and to the point. Bye.

Bill the Galactic Hero is the epitome and parody of every sci-fi book. He's the ultimate hero and the total loser. You have to love the sci-fi genre to appreciate Bill. Sure it's corny, and some of the jokes are rather low brow, but it's not meant to wring your brain in comprehension. It's a book that you can sit and read without shifting your brain out of first gear.(No offense intended, Mr. Harrison.) Lots of fun.

It's comforting to know this title is still in print - I've lost copy after copy to friends over the past 30 years. "Bill" was one of the first SF books I read as a kid and having just re-read it in middle age, it's as fresh and funny and clever as ever. And I understand more of the jokes, too. Definitely the first book I would save from a burning building.

Forget the series written (much later) with a co author, they are labored and derivative. This book proves that some originals are too good to ever be repeated. While it's overly tempting to read this solely as a "reply" to Heinlein's Starship Troopers (which in part it certainly is), it manages to skewer almost every cliche and convention of vintage SF. Even Asimov's Foundation Series, represented by the planet covering imperial capital gets a gentle tweak, as a question possibly never considered by Asimov himself is examined, to wit: in a planet sized city, who takes out the garbage? Still bitingly fresh and irreverent, it's harder today to understand the impact this book had when published 30-odd years ago, before it occurred to anyone that SF could be funny. But read it as an original and a trailblazer. It's a gem.

This is a book I've read and re-read and re-read numerous times. I enjoyed this book very much. So much so that I took the "handle" Stainless Steel Rat on the first BBS I was on (1984) and some "hacker" buddies still call me "Rat" to this day...

I recommend this book to any and all sci-fi readers. The later books weren't always as good as this trilogy - this should be the starting point for any future "Rats."

In short: GET THIS BOOK!

To enter the world of the Stainless Steel Rat remains one of the greatest delights of my reading experience when I was a teen, and I am so grateful to my father for having recommended these books to me. I would now like to pass the recommendation on to the world. If you're a fan of exceptionallly exciting, creative, and hilarious science fiction, you can't lose with the Rat. I've hardly ever been able to read a book twice, because I remember everything that happened and it's too boring to consider. Well, The Stainless Steel Rat stands in the company of a handful of exceptional books through the years that have merited repeated readings. I've read the first volume of stories four times over the years and I've been thinking as of late that I might read it again.

Someone in a previous review wondered where the movie is. I've wondered the same thing for years. Well, Slippery Jim fans will be happy to learn that a movie is in the works as I type.

It is a pleasant surprise when you find a book that makes you try to guess what will happen next, you are always wrong, and you prefer it that way. Jim is one of the most brilliant, principled, vibrant characters you will find. It is obvious that Mr. Harrison spent a long time working on the plot. One of the weaknesses of Sci-Fi is the lack of originality in many of the stories. These stories are all creative masterpieces. I think every writer of the science fiction, adventure, or mystery should read this book to see how it can be done.

The translators and publisher are Spanish. There is much vocabulary from Spain, just as the English version has much British vocabulary. I really enjoy learning about regional vocabulary differences, whether in English or Spanish, so this was a big plus.

A friend claims the American editions have been Americanized, although I don't know if it's true. (The American editions still have many British words, but do use some American words, like "sweater" instead of "jumper".) It's funny how the Brits understand us from seeing our movies/television, but we don't understand their vocab or accent as well. It's great to be exposed to different forms of languages we already know.

The translation seems very good, but some things seem wrong, such as "?QUE TE TENGO DICHO?" on the second page of text. I think this should be "?QUE TE HE DICHO?" Maybe this is a form with which I'm not familiar, because I can't imagine a native speaker and translator would make such a gringo ("guiri" en Espana) mistake.

Ahora Harry Potter se encuentra en segundo año de la escuela de Magos. Este es un libro que una vez lo comienzes a leer no podras parar como si realmente tuviera un hechizo. Ya he comenzado a leer el Prisionero de Azkaban que es el tercero de la serie y espero ansiosa que el cuarto libro salga en español. Definitivamente la narrativa es increible,la forma en que JK Rowling describe a los personajes es impresionante. Te los puedes inmaginar tal y como son y a la misma vez te transportas a la camara secreta con Harry. Es una serie de libros completamente fascinante, tanto para adultos como para niños.

It DIDNT have a mistake; saying QUE TE TENGO DICHO es right. In fact, im pretty sure what you said was right too. But anyway, anyone who hasn't read this should, but read the SORCERER'S STONE first, because it's really best to read them in order.
