My Favorite Book
Horriable Harry in Room 2B is my favorite book. Not only is it a book that i have grown up with, it is also an interesting and enjoyable book to just sit down and read. From the funny stiches he gets himself involved into, and the "double revenge" that he puts upon Sidney, this book has always made me giggle. If you arn't sure if an older kid would like it, let me tell you this, im 16 and Horriable Harry in Room 2B is DEFINTALY my FAVORITE book!

Horrible Harry in Room 2B
I think this book is cool. This is the best book I ever read. It is the best book I have ever read because Harry is very realistic. And Harry likes cookies and so do I. And Harry is horrible but he is still very cool. ~Gaby~

Review from Class 2C!
I'm wrting about Horrible Harry in Room 2B. Horrible Harry is very horrible because he plays tricks on girls and he even made Sidney say "I like girls" or he was going to tickle him. My favorite chapter was Horrible Harry and the Stub People and Halloween. In his costume he slithers. Can you guess what he is? I really liked Horrible Harry in Room 2B. I thought that Horrible Harry was too horrible. I would tell a lot of people to read Horrible Harry in Room 2B. I liked the book a lot! Would you want to read Horrible Harry in Room 2B?

Must have for Mercedes Lackey fans
A friend of mine loaned me this book when they heard that I love Misty Lackey's books. "Stolen Silver" is the story of how the Karsite Alberich was found by his companion.
All of the stories were wonderfully thought provoking and surprisingly deep for a sub-genre that has seen alot of fluff.

A sci-fi/horse lover's dream book!
I could not put this book down. Highly, highly reccomended for horse lovers(though not all the stories are suitable for children).

It's hard to find horse stories with a sci-fi/fantasy twist, and there are some good ones here. Four hooves up(haha)!

Two hooves up, WAY up!
A MUST-HAVE for horse lovers! When I first picked it up, I thought, oh geez, more girly horse-stuff....WRONG! Never have I read such great horse fiction! Most of the authors are actually knowledgeable about horses, which is definitely a plus! Some stories are even better than the Black Stallion. Most reccomended stories: "The Most Magical Thing About Rachel"(the author should do a full-length novel of this one!), "When Lightning Strikes", and "Riding the Nightmare"(altho' the ending is a tad cheesy:-).

Great Book
Swords and scorcery and roman legions all mixed up in one! This is definitely one hard to put down book!

Five Stars is Not Enough
Harry Turtledove has said that his life was shaped and molded by reading "Lest Darkness Fall" by L. Sprague De Camp. To my mind this first series by the master of alternate history is a time travel book based loosely upon that previous classic. Elements of one of Caesar's legions are transported forward in time to the Byzantine Empire. Only it's not the Byzantine Empire, it's the Videssos Empire in another universe where magic works. Aside from that, it's the Byzantine Empire written by a Byzantine historian. Aside from just surviving, the hero must prevent his new homeland from being overrun by barbarians "Lest Darkness Fall". For this reason I consider this the best time travel series to a fictitious universe ever written, as well as the best series about a Roman Legion. It is a must read for anyone interested in the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, or time travel.

One of the many things which make this series interesting is that the heroes are from Caesar's Rome. Rome is young energetic vibrant and, most of all, expanding at this time. They are transported to the Byzantine/Videssos Empire while it is in a period of decline. (If it were the real Byzantine Empire, it would be the final decline, but we can still hope for a revival of the Videssos Empire.) The decadence brought by a thousand years of Empire is sharply contrasted with the vibrant patriotism of our heroes who remain unknowing that this is the destiny of their empire too.

This isn't just a military book where the legion moves from battle to battle. This is a much more realistic and complete world where the hero is thrust into the middle of court politics, and has to fight to overcome the shear inertia of the Empire's slide towards collapse. The hero spends more time facing corruption, political intrigue, distrustful monarchs, intolerant monks, and tax collectors than he does facing mounted cavalry units.

I don't want to repeat the excellent review about the warfare in this series written by Robert, 12 MAR 99, under "The Misplaced Legion" (Videssos Cycle, Book 1). I would like to add though, that this is not a series about a general. This is not a David Drake/S.M. Sterling series about Belisarius. As Robert points out, the hero of this series stands in the middle of the battles, and seldom knows more of what's going on than immediately to his left and right. The battles themselves are mostly standup fights where two sides hack at each other. This is really much more realistic though. Most battles, especially in the Roman era, were fought this way. Even though nowadays it seems like every book we read is about Belisarius, brilliant generals with innovative battlefield ideas come along only once in a thousand years or so. Most battles are fought without them.

"The Misplaced Legion" (Videssos Cycle, Book 1) is followed by "An Emperor for the Legion" (The Videssos Cycle Book, 2), "The Legion of Videssos" (Videssos Cycle, Book 3), and "Swords of the Legion" (Videssos Cycle, Book 4). There are two prequel series about Videssos. The first is the Tale of Krispos series, beginning with "Krispos Rising." This is actually a two book story, which is excellent, and a third follow on novel which is very good. The other prequel, The Time of Troubles series, begins with "The Stolen Throne". This series is entertaining, but not really as good as the first two series.

Although there are ten other books about Videssos, there can never be enough. And there are only four books about the Misplaced Legion. There needs to be a sequel series not another prequel. Perhaps "Legion of Videssos: Next Generation" where Marcus's son, born and raised in Videssos, can become Emperor, with Dad and his Legion helping out of course. This could lead to a new golden age for Videssos, and maybe even . . .

Third book in series just as good as the first two.
The summary says is al

Great guidance to combine everything you know about W2K
I got my MCSE and MCSA - thanks to book. But, don't expect to get a step-by-step and comprehensive evaluation about each topic of W2K issue, such as DNS, AD, PROXY, VPN, ISA, etc. It assumes that you already have a broad knowledge and high proficiency about W2K.
It'll guide you how to manage and combine all of the information you already have about W2K; analyze problem, how to prevent it and finally design a good system.

It's a great book anyway.

The Only Book You Need!
Great resource, well written and informative. Covers all aspects completely! Highly recommend.

Excellent! This one should do the job....
For something that calls itself an "All-in-One" guide, I was pretty impress in the amount of information the authors of this book managed to compress in its pages.... I was similarly impress in the breadth of coverage (and format) that it was presented, from encyclopedia-type references to actual case studies -- I've certainly appreciated every detail.

The Mugger: An 87th Precinct Novel
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Audio Books (1996)
Authors: Ed McBain and Harry Crane
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

The Mugger is out there, preying on women in the night!
He uses the darkness of the city night as his cloak. He watches with a deep sense of patience. He silently, quickly steps up to the women, assaulting them violently. It is their money he is after...For he goes by the name of Clifford, and he is the Mugger. His method is always the same. After snatching his victim's purse, he bows from the waist and politely says "Clifford thanks you Madam." With several cases of muggings apperently commited by the same man, the detecives of the 87th Precinct go full tilt in bringing this man to justice. Detecives Hal Willis and Roger Hallivand head the case with what they have. Hal Willis is short in size, but don't let that fool you. He is a master of judo and knows how to use it. Roger Hallivand is a bull of a man, easily clearing the six foot mark. He speaks with his fists instead of words. Together, these two detecives use all they have to try to crack this case. Finally, a very attractive girl is found murdered, in which all evidence of the murder points toward the Mugger. The dead girl happened to be related to a friend of Bert Kling, who is a cop working in the 87th Precinct. Although he isn't a detecive, but instead a patrolman, Kling is weary. However, he is still convinced to seek out the killer by the victim's sister. He reluctantly agrees, and starts his own investigation. However, because he isn't a detecive and cannot offically investigate the crime without stepping on toes, Kling runs into trouble alng the way...Will the crafty Mugger ever be caught? Will Kling solve the murder? Will Kling ever be promoted to detecive? A very short and satisfying read. A true thriller. The second book in the acclaimed 87th Precinct series will keep you on edge. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

A GREAT READ!!!!!
This is only the second McBain book I have read. It is very , very good. I am going to try to find them to read in order. Have a long way to go I know. The Mugger is about Bert Kling, who is a partolman. He is searching for a mugger named Clifford. He is doing this in his off duty time. Then a young girl Kling has met is killed, was it by the mugger or not????? The ending is great is all I will say about that. The book is fairly short, easy to read and will hold you attention. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good mystery.

Excellent Procedural from '56
This entry in the 87th series spotlights Bert Kling before his promotion to detective. A mugger wearing cheap sunglasses has been targeting women in the precinct. When the sister of a friend is found murdered with all clues pointing to the mugger, Kling investigates and gets embroiled in the hunt for the purse snatcher. Noticeably absent in this novel is Steve Carella, who is usually McBain's focal point.

Mr. Levine's Simple Truth
Philip Levine writes in the title poem of this collection:

"Some things/you know all your life. They are so simple and true/they must be said without elegance, meter and rhyme,/they must be laid on the table beside the salt shaker,/the glass of water, the absence of light gathering/ in the shadows of picture frames, they must be/ naked and alone, they must stand for themselves."

These lines capture many of the themes of this Pulitzer-prize winning book. The poems in this collection are deceptively simple, "naked and alone". They generally involve an incident or person, recollected by the poet from his past. The incident is recounted in bare unrhymed lines, without hyperbole or judgment. We are encouraged to see the incident, as we see the still life reproduced on the cover of the volume and to let it "stand for itself". The poems are elegaic in tone and the effect of the memory is generally one of deep sadness.

Many of the poems have a deliberately pictorial quality, as reflected in their titles, that remind one of a photo or of a painting in a museum. In many cases, the reader is tempted to conceive in the mind's eye a painting to accompany the poem. This is true, particularly, as the book progresses into its final section with its descriptions of the poet's mother ("My Mother with Purse, the Summer they Murdered the Spanish Poet"), father ("My Father with Cigarette Twelve Years before the Nazis could Break his Heart"), and others ("Edward Lieberman, Entrepreneur, four years after the Burnings on Okinawa") One of the poems of the collection is title simply "Photography". Ironically, this poem is less pictorial than many others. It relates a sad incident from the poet's childhood involving his Aunt, and others, and focuses on the ravages of time and memory.

The poems also focus on the role imagination plays in constituting our reality. The first poem of the collection "On the Meeting of Garcia Lorca and Hart Crane" relates a meeting between these two romantic 20th Century poets and alludes to Crane's apparent suicide in jumping from a ship bound from Vera Cruz to New York. Crane's tragic but romantic death is juxtaposed with the vision coming "to an ordinary man staring/ at a filthy river" as he contemplates not only Crane and Lorca but his son falling to his death "from/the roof of a building he works on." With a voice of irony, the poet asks us to "bless the imagination. It gives/ us the myths we live by. Let's bless/ the visionary power of the human-- the only animal that's got it--"

These poems have a multi-layered simplicity realized through an understated voice of sadness and illuminated by imagination.

He writes plain, about things plain, and is plain fabulous!
Philip Levine once vowed to be the voice of the poor, the simple, those without voice--a vow he has not broken in his sixty-plus years of writing poetry. In 1995, Levine was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his collection of poems, "the Simple Truth". That prize would mean less to him than the knowledge that thousands of people have found enjoyment and comfort from reading his poems--that from his work, they came to better understand our common vulnerabilty to the state of being human. Levine's poems are an echo of the emotions trapped in the reader's heart; they are a friendly voice giving substance to what has been lived, but not spoken. Levine's title poem "The Simple Truth" invites the reader to recognize and celebrate the stark beauty of simple things. Each poem in this collection builds on the other to introduce the reader to the poet, who in turn introduces readers to perfect poetic expression, so personal that they will stop and say "Yes!! That IS how it is!" Anyone who cannot relate to or reconginze themself in at least half of the poems in this fine book, have not read it. That's "the simple truth."

Beautiful book
Levine's poetry often moves me. In my opinion, this is his best book. His poems strike me as being very honest; they make me accept the complicated mess of joys and disappointments that it means to be human. The title poem, "The Simple Truth," explains exactly what I mean (and in a better way than I'm doing here). Please read this book.

Well-researched and written
Kudos to Dr. Diane Plotkin for her thorough research into the lives of the women featured in this book. Her attention to detail helps transport us to the various camps where we experience dehumanization and deprivation. Through it all, however, it is interesting to see the various ways these women nurtured and tried to protect one another. This is a "must-read" book because it clearly illustrates the general differences in the ways men and women coped with, and adapted to, life in the concentration camps.

moving journey through the torment of courageous women
It was hard to put this book down once I started it. Although the women portrayed faced a living hell all around them, the authors elicit the courage and determination each women had to continue the daily existence in the camps. And that is what is so powerful; the daily horrors which become the backdrop for extermination are also part of the reason that each was able to define for herself a path through death.

An achingly disturbing, but important, read.
This book was a difficult endeavor, as one never wants to face the potential raw ugliness of mankind. However, the voices of these women are invaluable in helping the world to remember a time which must never be forgotten.

As a young woman (34 years old) and a mother of three (which qualifies me as a caregiver, I guess), my heart went out to these brave women, struggling to impart some small measure of kindness or at least relief of suffering to their fellow prisoners. Women and children are seemingly the most vulnerable when society engages in chaos, but the women caregivers chronicled in this book were apparently among the most intrepid of all. I believe they gathered strength from the acts of focusing on giving aid to others in the most desperate of circumstances. Anyone who is interested in what the human spirit can endure, and indeed, overcome, should read this book.

One-stop gateway to the telecom world, but don't stop here.
I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation. I read Mr Green's book to get a broader understanding of the telecom world, of which network intrusion detection occupies a small but highly visible part. This immense book (774 pages of text, plus URLs, acronyms, and a glossary) addressed nearly every topic I had encountered reading communications magazines, speaking with the telecom industry, and researching the Web. While no single book can provide the depth needed for truly understand a specific technology, Mr Green's work provided the foundation for future research. For example, after getting the context for SS7, I may now buy "Signalling System #7, 3rd Edition" by Travis Russell. I didn't give the book five stars, as I was not completely comfortable absorbing the material. This is the sort of book that requires you to read the whole book twice in order to appreciate the early chapters. References to technologies like ATM or frame relay in the first half of the book make much more sense after reading chapters dedicated to those issues. If Mr Green had given me slightly more to grasp while reading the early material, or had perhaps organized the book with the telecom novice in mind, I may have given five stars. Nevertheless, if you're looking for one-stop shopping for telecommunications, I highly recommend this book. Don't be fooled by the "business" classification on the dust jacket -- this book is a technical volume, with protocol headers and other details included. Great work Mr Green!

Technical and Readable
The Irwin Handbook of telecommunications is both technical and readable. It is an excellent text for telecommunication students, managers, and vendors. The field of telecommunications is rapidly evolving. In the future ,jobs and fortunes will be won and lost by those who apply winning technologies. Consider this book a score card. You cannt tell the players without a scorecard.

The best book on telecommunications I have ever read.
I read this book about a year or so ago, and I have been looking for it since then. It is the best book on telecommunications I have ever read. It goes into great depth of Switching, SS7, VMBs, PBXs, Centrex, ISDN, etc. Definitely a good buy.

Nlp: Neuro Linguistic Programming the New Art and Science of Getting What You Want

To the Point and Right On Target
A well written and straight forward book on NLP. As I looked through the available books on NLP this was the one that seemed to provide an informative and readable explanation of the subject. I agree with the comments of other reviewers who indicate that many of the other publications on the subject seem to take off into a different universe where beads, candles, and sandals are customary regalia.

I highly recommend Adler's book as a helpful primer on the subject.

NLP without tears
very readable and ideal introduction for skeptics like me

The making of a classic
It's not surprising that this has become a non-negotiable NLP text for people who want to get something out of the subject without donning sandals and letting their hair grow scruffy. He has kept NLPspeak to a bare minimum (no sign of 'elegant') and has not been slow to deviate from the party line to appeal more to real 'OK' business people. I gather it's in umpteen languages so seems to appeal very widely for such a potentially heavy subject. Also refreshing, he spares British readers 'Robbins' rhetoric' and goes straight for the grey matter and long-term change in the reader. An ideal all round introduction before moving on to his other books for trainers, managers, golfers and NLP practitioners (NLP in 21 Days). I see NLP: New Art etc is endorsed by John Seymour, another respected trainer/writer whose own 'Introduction to NLP' set the standards before Alder's more recent books broke into a wider business audience. A classic so worth investing in.
