zany literary fun
Oulipo is great! This book is just so full of STUFF. What they did was just spend a lot of time thinking of wild ways to inspire & direct writing, & what we're left with is this labyrinth of experimrents. For me, the one of the greatest things gleaned from Oulipo is just the general sense that therec are sooo many more conceptual & logistical systems out there that you haven't even touched upon yet but that are waiting.

The Book of Ways
If you ever come across Arthur Brand's little article on the Oulipo, cherish it. I read it back in the late 80s, in an anthology somewhere, and I've never been able to find it since. It whet my appetite for these crazy masters of restricted composition, who spend their time devising totally new ways to write. This isn't a book for the "poetry of everyday life" set, or writing workshop clones. It's a book, as Brand said, for "mad scientists, mathematicians, monster-makers and angels." It's a writer's encylopedia, stuffed with ideas, strategies, graphs, games, machines, etc for making poetry and fiction.

Please read this review.
Before reading this book, I didn't know anything about Oulipo....do you? If not, here's the gist: Oulipo are a bunch of slightly crazy people who want to find new and fun ways to write stuff. So, they create all these interesting and zany techniques to generate their writing...to me, it seems similar to how modern composers generate notes and rhythms using tone rows and stuff like that. This book is a "compendium" of these techniques, Oulipo authors, their works, etc. I think it's great. I'd recommend it to writers who want to try something new (as opposed to just writing "from the heart", or whatever) and I'd also recommend it to people who like modern, formalist type stuff. Have fun.

Did you take your Multivitamin today?
With life moving at a record pace, you are doing well if you remember to drink your eight glasses of water a day. While water is undeniably essential to your well being, it is amazing how many of us forget to drink those extra glasses of water that could make all the difference. Remembering to take a multivitamin is another one of those daily things you almost have to write on your calendar to remember along with: "Exercise Today or Else!"

As I sit here chewing a Country Life Adult's Multivitamin, I wonder if I am getting all the essential Vitamins and Minerals in one supplement. Would it not be ideal if all you had to take each day was one chewable and delicious pill and that was it. Well, life is just not that simple, unfortunately. Each multivitamin is formulated differently and to find one that is Vegetarian and Hypoallergenic was a real plus.

Now, if you just picked up a bottle of multivitamins and you didn't know that taking over 8,000 I.U. of vitamin A per day was not advisable for pregnant women, you might want to read this book. If you are dealing with skin problems, you might want to take 10,000 IU and that would be fine. For Vitamin A to be toxic, you would have to take 100,000 IU daily for a period of months and you would not want to take such a high dose unless under a doctor's supervision.

There is a handy chart where you can Troubleshoot for Disorders. If you have Insomnia, you might want to consider Calcium and Melatonin (Read the book by Ray Sahelian first if you take prescription medications).

Most of us have taken Antibiotics. Did you know that this could cause a deficiency in B2, Biotin, Folic Acid, Niacin, C, D, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Zinc?

What this book will do for you is give you the basic information you need to make informed decisions about your health. You will know which supplement to take and how much you should take. This book is written by a practicing certified nutrition specialist. Shari Lieberman is a CNS with a MA in Nutrition, Food Science and Dietetics.

The Contents Include:

The Case For Supplementation
The Vitamins: Vitamin A, D, E, K, B Complex, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pyridoxine, Cobalamin, Folic Acid, Pantothenic Acid, Biotin, Choline, Inositol, PABA, Vitamin C.
The Minerals: Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Selenium, Iodine, Potassiuma dn Boron.
Beyond Vitamins and Minerals: Coenzyme Q10, Essential Fatty Acids., Flavonoids, Garlic, Glutathione and N-Acetylcysteine, L-Carnitine, Melatonin and DHEA.
Appendixes and Notes: Summary of Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients, Drug-Induced Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies, Worksheet, Daily Supplement Schedule and Reference Abstracts for Vitamins, Minerals and Other Nutrients.

The first section explains why you need vitamin and mineral supplement to protect yourself against disease and to reach the highest levels of mental and physical well-being. It then explains how you can design your own personalized nutrient plan based on your specific health problems and nutritional needs.

Then, each of the following chapters discusses a particular vitamin, mineral or supplement. The authors provide a scientifically documented Optimum Daily Intake (ODI) to follow which is generally well above the government's Recommended Daily Intake (RDI).

There are sample worksheets and supplement checklists to help you in corporate healthful supplements into your busy lifestyle.

Nice Basic Book about Nutritional Supplements.

Definitive reference, concise information, great organizatio
I discovered this book many years ago when I was getting serious about vitamins and improving my health. I bought and read a number of vitamin books at the time, but this is the only book I use frequently. With the aid of this book, I made a personal perscription program for myself and my husband focusing on our needs, age, etc. The vitamins were ordered on sale from puritanspride and an inventory spreadsheet manages my inventory. As I focused on various areas of need, I noticed the visible improvements and have tweaked my program over the years. One of my bigger fears with vitamins was taking too many or taking ineffective vitamins. This has been a winner for me. Without this book, I could never have gotten this system in place. Of course, vitamins don't replace medical help sometimes, but they help keep us healthier than we might be otherwise.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in vitamins. I have sent copies to my friends and relatives. It is my absolute favorite.

This books tells you what each vitamin / mineral does for you, the recommended dosage and the optimum daily allowance. This is a collection of clear well-organized information that is an excellent reference book.

Excellent Guide for Supplements!
I have been looking for a reference to vitamins, minerals and other substances purported to be healthful for various reasons, THIS IS IT. Basically the approach is "prevention is worth a pound of cure". When things get serious, modern medicine is usually your best option, but along the way, maintain a health life style and give your body what it needs, not to excess. Studies are references with scientific background. I was concerned about taking too much of any one vitamin or mineral that was included in my multivitamin. With this book, I learned that with the IU content of most multivitamins on the market this is very unlikely.

The Adventures of Mabel
I remember reading this book over and over again as a child. I remember the tablature in the book, for the song that Mabel whistled to call the animals, and I remember playing the notes on the piano, so that I could memorize the tune in my head. I whistled that tune to every animal that I encountered for years, waiting for the magical response! I still remember the tune in my head today, and I have taught it to my daughter, hoping to find a copy of the book for her to read! I very nearly named my daughter after Mabel, because my memories of her are so vivid and wonderful!

Wonderful Book
I remember reading this book when I was nine. When I became a mother, this was THE book that stood out in my memory as a must have for my daughter. She is only a few months old, and already I am getting her a copy to hopefully pass down to her children some day. It is amazing how, decades later, I still remember the delight I got from reading these stories. I believe that any child that reads them can't help but end up make believing that they have these wonderful adventures, just like Mabel. These stories will delight a child's imagination and remain in their memory for years to come!

The Adventures of Mabel
This story was read to me in 2nd grade, and I thought it was the most beautiful and magical book I had ever read. It opens up a child's imagination, and makes you think you yourself are Mabel, having the wonderful adventures she does. It has been an EXTREMELY long time since I read this book, but I remember every detail vividly, as I will probably always do. I recommend this story to everyone, people of all ages. I will forever cherish the memories of this book in my heart.

Did we really buy one of these?
Did folks buy this stuff? They sure did, by the millions according to Harry and Stall. Some of these products would really be hard to parody, the Chai Ceramic Pet that grows vegetation, the Turbi Twist, a hair towel with an elastic loop (with the predictable AS SEEN ON TV on the box) the Copper Tongue Scraper, PROVEN EFFECTIVE was the bold statement on its packaging but it really does look just like a piece of bent metal! Each product has a spread with photos, copy and several colored panels (more on these later) containing background material and other trivia. I liked the Product panels best with their Description, Availability, Claimed Innovation, Upside and the Downside, just read the Downside to each product and really get the truth.

The six basic chapters are Kitchen Marvels, Fashion and Beauty, Fabulous Fitness, Entertainment Breakthroughs, Home Improvement Miracles, and finally Get Rich Quick, between these chapters are some interesting features, pages 122 and 123 cover the rise of the home shopping channels where you will be amazed to find that QVC have studio tours (yours for only [x ammount of dollars]). Ron Popiel, the founder of Ronco, has four pages explaining the background to the infomercial techniques he uses to shift the goods. Incidentally the Ronco story is covered in 'But, Wait! There's More!' by Timothy Samuelson, lots of product photos, vintage ads and packaging and a fairly accurate history of the Popiel family. Ever wonder what happened to yesterday's celebrities, check out pages 74 to 79 to see the Top 100 infomercial-land stars from Allen (Debbie) to Zappa (Dweezel) you'll be surprised who's listed, well, perhaps not. 'As Seen On TV' is a fascinating and fun book covering a subject that most of us would hardly think twice about.

But, wait! There is more! DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL! Buy this book and get absolutely FREE hundreds of words that only come out in daylight! The book's designer (unfortunately) decided to use pink panels, on many of the product pages, with text in light blue. Big mistake, because it is very hard to read in a normal domestic lighting environment and the type used for the headlines on these panels is hard to read even in daylight!

Hey good lookin', we'll be back to pick ya up later!
If you recognize this catch phrase from the Mr. Microphone ad, you'll love this book. Indeed any child of the '70s or '80s can appreciate the nostalgia and humor of the infomercial era, which is vividly and humorously captured in "As Seen on TV". It's all here, from Abtronic to Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute. If you have any doubt about whether your money would be well spent on this gem, then to paraphrase Ron Popeil: "Just forget it and GET IT!"

If you read this review in the next ten minutes...
This book read itself!

I bought this trip to entertain myself for a long drive home from Wisconsin to Florda. (Don't worry- I was the passanger, not the driver. Gusee I should've used the word 'ride' but I'm too lazy to backspace!)

I think the ultimate compliment to a book is when your constantly interupting other people around you to read the next wonderful thing you've read. I lost my voice from this book.

There's not too much to tell in this review. You've simply got to read it for yourself. It is so much more than just a list of goofy things sold via infomercials and TV ads. We get interviews, product history, trivia and much, much more.

We also get the lowdown on what was legit and what wasn't.

So the next time your using the flow-bee and screw up so badly your running to the store for some GLH (if you don't know what that sentence just meant, buy the book)... think of this book. It'll help ya.

And if you're just looking for some easy entertaing reading... this is it folks!

Computer Color Graphics: Understanding Today's Visual Communication

Provides in-depth focus on computer color graphics
This treatise on modern visual communication provides an important in-depth focus on computer color graphics as they're applied to ads, brochures, and color presentations. From using the Web and developing materials for web publication to working with designers and understanding the commercial printing process, Computer Color Graphics is packed with ideas and insights into color graphics as a whole.

A great overview of today's technology!
This book will be more than just a textbook for the students in my class, I expect it to be a constant reference source. Without getting overly technical Harry waldman is able to explain the concepts behind today's image and page development applications and processes. Adjunct Professor, Carnegie-Mellon University

Color Graphics for Web Page Design
This is not a childrens' book, and I'm not 12. If I were to teach a course on 'Color Graphics for Web Page Design' I would probably use this book as a text. I wish I had read it before taking a course in Adobe Photoshop, where it is all too easy to get bogged down in programming detail.

Computer Color Graphics takes some essential matters like screen vs. paper, CYMK vs.RGB, vector vs. raster graphics and explains them clearly with good insight and good examples.

What the book is leading the reader towards is the design of web pages. Very sensibly there is a discussion of the ten or so major graphics and publishing programs.

This is a book that can be read profitably many times

A Good Book! (HA,HA)
This book is a great book. You can't tell who the bad guy is at all! The story really twists and you may start to think that Chris is the bad guy. Chris is a boy who looks for the treasure that a pirate was supposed to dump into the water. The 3 investigators go on a trip to Skelleton island to shoot a picture, but really to discover the secret of a ghost that is haunting Bob Andrews dad movie crew. When they come during a storm a guy takes and strands the 3 investigators on an island. That is were they meet Chris! There are quite a few suspicious people that I suspected. This is one of the best books out of the series(in my opinion). This book may look stupid but it is a great book. And beware you will be staying up all night reading this book!

Ghosts, Pirates, and Treasure--Oh Boy!
In this adventure, the Three Investigators venture far away from Rocky Beach, California--3000 miles away to a haunted island on the east coast where Pete's father is working to restore an old thrill park for a movie he is working on. Having met with stolen equipment and the appearance of a ghost, the boys are sent for to figure out who is trying to keep the movie company away from Skeleton Island. The boys meet with danger and duplicity at every turn, it seems, getting themselves into even more trouble than usual--several times by their own doing. ...

There aren't really any plot twists or surprises in this story. What seems to me to be the biggest clue to the whole mystery flops out at you like a dead fish right in the middle of the book, and you have to wait until the end to see Jupiter finally seize upon it. Overall, though, it is still a pretty good story. It's hard to go wrong when you are writing about pirates, ghosts, and treasure. My childhood obsession with the secret headquarters at the Salvage Yard obviously continues because I certainly missed it in this book. The boys seemed to be somewhat out of their element here, and it shows. Of course, nothing can stop them from solving a mystery once they are on the case.

It's one of the best books I've read!
The book is about three investagators that are taping a movie, but well they are taping they acutually experience the tragic story that happend 10 years ago! Trust me you would love this story! Well I'm not finished with the book yet so I don't know the rest but it's really good so far! That's my review!

Sylvie and Bruno
Published in Digital by Amazon Press ()
Authors: Lewis Carroll and Harry Furniss
Amazon base price: $2.99
Average review score:

Remarkable
The book IS inconsistent. Unlike the brilliant Alice books, there are places where what Carroll is trying to do just doesn't work. But this book is written on a GIGANTIC scale. Carroll tries to take the basis of Alice, and expand it into something of real profundity - something that covers an entire moral and ethical universe. And much of the time, he actually *succeeds* at such an impossible task. There are scenes that are hysterically funny, and scenes that will make you weep. The book is VERY touching, and gives a strong and unforgettable message on the totality, wonder and all-conquering nature of all-conquering love. Sylvie, the fairy-child, is Love Itself, embodied. Despite its spottiness, this book is very, very impressive, and you will want to read it more than once, just to re-experience the good stuff, which is very, very good.

"For I think it is Love. For I feel it is Love. For I'm sure it is nothing but Love!"

Indeed. And Amen.

A long neglected master piece
It cannot be separated from the second part "Sylvie and Bruno Concluded".
In this set of two novels, Lewis Carroll appears as what we rarely know about him. He is the prophet of modern literature. He constantly passes from real life to fairyland, from reality to imagination, from realism to moral depth. Many lines are entertwined in this tale. the story of Bruno and Sylvie, two delightful young fairy children. The story of Lady Muriel and her love for and from Arthur. The story of Arthur Forester, MD, and his dedication to healing as far as far can be, even if it includes his own death in this dedication. Many other lines, I said. The line of Bruno and Sylvie's father, the deposed King who becomes the King of Fairyland. The line of the Professor and the Other Professor, and this drastic vision of both responsible and irresponsible science. The line of pure poetry constantly scattered among the pages. The line of so many children's tales in the form of tales or nursery rhymes and other Mother Goose productions. No one can come to the end of this richness and to a complete enumeration of all the stories and intricacies that are woven into this fascinating novel. A masterpiece that has mostly remained unknown or unrecognized.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

Sylvie and Bruno Is Totally Worth The Read
There is *nothing* disappointing about Sylvie and Bruno. It is not anything like Alice.. it surpasses Alice in every way.
This book is filled with a goodness that just can't help itself... and while it can be silly at times, and crazy at others, in the end it brings me to tears, every time. It is noble and honest and the characters steal your heart...
Not all of life is suffering... and this book is about that. I would really encourage you to pick it up. The first few chapters are a little crazy as you get used to this half-reality half-fantasy style... but it pulls you in so quickly, and will really blow you away.
An absolutely wonderful book!

Tasha Tudor Cookbook
This is a fascinating lady and I have tried some of the recipes. All have been well liked by everyone who has eaten them. I would recommend this book as well as any other for adults and children alike. Her videos take you to another time and place - try them.

Will be a family heirloom cookbook.......
Do not let the whimsical dainty painting on the books cover make you think this is a book for children. It is in fact a book that adults will love. Especially those who love homesteading, simply living, family and friends.

Not only are the recipes wonderful but the author has included a dialogue on what makes the recipe one she likes but she also has done wonderful water colour paintings to accompany the recipes.

And the recipes are varied from Appetizers and Salads, to Soups, breads and muffins, Main dishes to desserts and beverages. It is a cookbook that will become a family heirloom.

Cooking, Memories and amazing Artwork.
Corgi Cottage, the memories, the recipes. All Tasha Tudor fans will want to add this book to their collection. Cookbook collectors must embellish their shelf with this book. Old recipes, simple delights and wholesome goodness jump from the pages of Tasha's beautifully designed cookbook. You'll feel the warmth of her kitchen and enjoy her easy cooking lessons. Once you try her mashed potato recipe, you'll never do it any other way. Tasha's Lemon Jelly soothes the most unsettled tummy. Curl up with this book, learn a bit of history and art appreciation, then off to the kitchen for hours of culinary delight!

Enjoyable reading for non-native and native English speakers
SO far, so good! My students enjoy these "proverbs" and lively discussion ensues. Some of the example scenarios using the expressions aren't that great - sometimes a bit elevated for intermediate ESL sudents. So just make up your own...

Smart Way for Studying Proverbs
This book is really cool. I am very pleased indeed to recommend it for those studying proverbs. The author of this book, Mr. Harry Collis, is so smart. He presented a very good number of common English proverbs in a genius way of learning. It is to learn and have fun in the same time. He really wants his readers to sit down, relax, read, learn, and laugh!!!

He, first, had had his book illustrated with vary funny cartoons, which make the readers zealous to read and read. Secondly, the readers, then, will read a dialogue and within each dialogue they will learn and comprehend a proverb in the same time. Namely, both the proverb and its meaning are clearly explained inside the dialogue, not to mention, they are bolded.

I am sure that those whose mother language is not English will find studying proverbs as well as idioms is much easer than learning English vocabularies.

(...)

fun,fun reading!
It's a good book to learn both English language and English way of thinking.

And with beautiful illustration by Mario Risso.

All We Need of Hell

good book
what can i say about it that isn't said below, i just wanted to add my four stars

Crews lite
The perfect book for beginners. If you've never read a Harry Crews novel before, read this first. At under 200 pgs. it is a quick read but no less taut, brutal, incisive and humorous as his earlier works. At 1st morose and tragic then oddly funny until at the last almost spiritually uplifting. I love this book. If you do as well, take the plunge into hardcore Crews and try A Feast of Snakes. After that, you will be hooked.

Harry Crews Best Novel: Tragically Out of Print
I read All We Need of Hell about 10 years ago. Borrowed the copy from my local library. I rarely re-read novels at all. I not only re-read it, but I checked it out again and read it a second time, immediately after the first time. Then, I tracked down a used trade-paperback in good condition and paid a significant sum of money for it. Read THAT copy. Shelved it and took it down and did a FOURTH reading. This has the most interesting mix of characters and a protagonist who lives for order and discipline, finds his life spinning out of control anyway. It's a great read which--and I hope this doesn't insult Harry--cries out to be filmed.
